[Q] Quirks when using Market on Nook Touch - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the Google Market running on the Nook Touch. It works, but there are a few quirks:
When browsing the market, some application categories operate perfectly fine, but various others do not allow you to scroll the screen. For example, while browsing All applications, you can scroll through the list and install applications perfectly fine. But when going to a certain category, for example, productivity apps, you may not be able to scroll the list. This may also happen when selecting free, paid, or recent apps. Some tabbed categories scroll fine and others do not.
Also, on some application descriptions in the market, no information is displayed. The application can still be installed just fine.
I was wondering if there are similar problems using the Market on other devices that did not originally have it, i.e. Nook Color. If so, does anyone have a solution or insight what might be causing this?

I don't see the descriptions for some apps either. Use the AppBrain app (which provides a much better user interface) to solve the description problem. Also the lists seem to scroll fine for me.
I do have a different issue. When pressing the search button in Market, the stock Nook search takes over and I can't search the Android Market or AppBrain. This happens for several other apps (e.g., Dolphin Browser). I saw others have mentioned the same problem. Any solution?

I haven't tried AppBrain yet, but I have the same search problem with the Market. The screen blanks and searching is impossible, just as it is w/the mod's default browser (Opera mini however, is the bee's knees and works great).
One more quirk or glitch I'd like to add is that my serial number for the Nook Touch shows up as "00000000000000." I don't want to restore and re-root, is there maybe a workaround for this?
EDIT: The serial number now shows, but the "Owner" and "Account" information show as "Unavailable."

The search problem has been solved: trace this post. No need to do AppBrain, chomp, etc any more. I also use Opera mini as my default browser.

I posted in that thread, too. Since then I've reinstalled the ROM I have my user information back, but the serial number disappeared again, and my registration shows as complete.
So, I'm back to square one with two peculiar problems:
1) How to get my serial # to show
2) How to get my Shop to work (clicking on it directly just flashes me back to the screen I was at previously). Thanks to the updated vending.apk, I can at least shop now through the search feature, but that's still limiting.

Thought I'd report back with what I did to fix the problem of the serial number. I ended up resetting the Nook Touch from within the B&N menu option, and then I had to do the button factory reset as well (hold down power button, then two bottom page buttons for five seconds, release).
After that I re-registered, reloaded TouchNooter rom, and somehow everything cured itself. Except Shop. Still can't shop, but other kinks are getting worked out at least.

After rooting with TouchNooter I couldn't search either so I tried replacing the vending.apk as in the link and also updating all the GAPPS (used CyanogenMod 7 from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version#Google_Apps) and now the Market is broken :-( Must be missing something!

Thanks for this: I had the same serial number issue, and then I did the in-nook menu wipe and reinstall with the factory reset, and now everything works more than perfectly! The nook part of the device works just the same as before [including the '6 pages per flash swipe], but I can use the android part if I want to IRC on e-Ink or browse the internet and such [which is what I bought it for really]. Great times, and the input problems [with portrait mode and typing it's kinda ew] aren't much of a problem, since it's mainly just reading.
I do wish it had a bluetooth output thing so I cold use a keyboard to type on it: then it would be more than perfect, but as is it's pretty great anyways. Maybe I should buy one of those micro-USB to USB things ...

Never had these problems before myself, but all I can suggest is clearing the market cache, and if that doesn't work, reflashing gapps.

Cannot connect to Chrome-to-Phone no matter what/FCes on certain YouTube app videos

Hey guys,
No matter what, I get the "Unable to Connect" error when trying to connect to my Gmail on Chrome-to-Phone. I've uninstalled, reinstalled etc but nothing. Other Google apps seem to work fine I think.
I'm already connected to this account in this app on my Droid X, so I know it should work. Same goes for my Nook Color previously, worked fine. Why wouldn't it work on this?
Also, in the YouTube tablet app, some videos I try to watch, the second it hits the video screen and the little loading circle starts spinning, the app freezes and then force closes. More than 50% of the videos seem to work, but some (namely certain ones I click from the widget that are featured, which is weird) freeze up right away and FC on me. Any answers to this one yet?
Thanks.
I definitely get the youtube force closes. No idea whats causing it.
Well I bet that one's pretty common.
But does anyone know how to make Chrome to Phone work? This is killing me!
I have the same chrome to phone problem on my Tab and Thunderbolt. Its really annoying because I use it all of the time.
np with Chrome2Phone here - it's just a little slow sometimes.
Try: Force Stop, Clear Cache for the app & restart.
You seeing any message in your logs? (adb logcat)

Nope, tried clearing/uninstalling...nothing works, just get unable to connect.
EDIT: I did a logcat on my PC while trying to connect to Chrome to Phone, and the section that contains tons of mentions of Chrome to Phone is freakin over 14,000 characters long, much too long to paste in here. How do I know what to look for in there??? (A hell of a lot of activity happens instantly).
Google has some arbitrary limit of number of devices that you can connect to your chrome to phone account. If you use a different Google account, you should be fine. If you unregister one of your devices, you should be fine.
The problem comes from us crack-flashers that forget to unregister before flashing a new ROM. If you have a nandroid backup of a ROM where you are still registered, restore it and unregister, then restore back to whatever you were using before. I've even gotten it to work on my tablet by unregistering on my phone and then restoring a backup to regain the registration on my phone.
I've also heard that the old registrations expire after a while. I can't verify that, though.

You'll see something that looks like a stack-trace.
It has to be fast - your phone does a lot without you knowing about it
Your best bet is to: adb logcat > capture.txt
Run through the app.
Open & explore.
You'll find a group of lines that look something like:
Code:
D/ContactsSyncAdapter( 517): at com.google.wireless.gdata2.client.GDataServiceClient.convertHttpExceptionForWrites(GDataServiceClient.java:466)
The specific content will vary depending on what apps is crashing.
Feel free to IM me the log and I'll help point out the error.

Ok so the too many devices thing is it. I think 2 is the limit. I am linked through my Droid X and was linked to my Nook Color. The problem is that I factory restored (reflashed stock Nook firmware) the Nook to sell it and no longer have access to Chrome to Phone on that device (I assumed it would disconnect the link for me?). It has stock firmware, so no Android apps or anything. Yet the only way I can get it to connect on my Tab is to disconnect on my Droid X app. I don't want to disconnect on there obviously.
How can I disconnect what it thinks is still a link to my Nook Color without actually even having it on the device?? I want to have it link to my DX and my Tab- this will work but I don't see any outside way to unlink it from my Nook? Grr
Basically now, my Tab is connected fine but now the same issue is with my DX, so I still need to figure this out.
Also, in my opinions, this limit of two is not great because what if you really have a legit third device and want to link? There is no quick way to switch between devices if there is a third, and nobody really wants to have two Google accounts just for this. Kinda stupid IMO.
I have had this issue for awhile on my Samsung Captivate and now my Galaxy tab. If there is a limit, I need to figure out how to remove the old ones. Does any one know how to remove devices? I do not currently have it connected on any devices so I should be able to have it running no problem but I get the same message as the OP when I try.

Um OK, so I bit the bullet, took the Nook out, reflashed CM7, logged into Google, downloaded Chrome to Phone...all so I can do what I thought would work and log in to Chrome to Phone and then disconnect again so that the device would now longer be linked. I did that, and now I cannot connect on any of my three devices.
Are you serious?? How are people supposed to deal with this? There is no device management for the account/app anywhere. Can someone please help me make this work? I don't know what to do at this point..
I even tried connecting CTP on the Nook to my other Google account to see if it would really unlink my original account, but I still can't login with the original account on any device!! Oh my freakin God

2 problems with touchwiz

Ok, first off I like most of the new tw features and haven't had any major problems. I have 2 minor annoyances tho. First, the stock browser keeps loading mobile websites even tho I did the about: debug thing I tried clearing the data and factory reset. This will help for a little while but next time I open the browser it is loading mobile sites again. Dolphin and opera work fine.
Second problem is with market app. When I first open the app next to all the categories should be a ">" icon you can click to go into that category. Like Free Apps >, Paid Apps > etc. but mine doesn't have the > next to every category. Only certain ones. I cannot click on the categories without the >. Its the same with movies and books. Once again tried erasing app data and cleared my account and reentered it to no avail. Not sure if my settings are screwy or if it's re doing this.
for the first one just use the modded framework so it sticks to User Agent of a desktop. second one not sure :<
The second problem doesn't have anything to do with Touchwiz. I have the same problem with Xoom (Android 3.2). Google updated the European Market to have Featured Tablet Apps and this messed things up.
after doing the update haptic feedback does not work in stock android keyboard and I have issues with wallpapers some times only half of it shows
Number 2 seems to be a market issue, It's doing it pour moi aussi.
I think that's googles fault & the reason is becos some apps are not available in your area or are not optimized for tablet but you can sideload them.

Can't search Market and Opera / Stock Browser FCs

Rooted my NST today( just got one ) and am on 1.1.2 firmware, everything seems to be working ok except I can't search the market. I can install apps from the market just fine, but when I search it just shows a blank list like it didn't find any matches ( although I know there are matches )
Also, opera mini and the stock browser both FC after opening before it renders the first web page.
Any fixes for these out there?

In another post the search issue was confirmed as being an issue with the Google Play from Google Market upgrades( even though we use the market.apk ) ... Using the SearchMarket app on the Play Store allows you to search as a work around.
Uninstalling Opera Mini and installing Opera Mobile fixed the browser crashing issue.
It's been about 16 hours since I rooted or so

Sorry, it wasn't a post, got a private message from eded333 containing the following pertaining to search in market functionality...
Well, a similar issue happened on early stages of the way we installed google apps, probably market needs an update to work correctly as Googleplay or the new 1.1.2 update has broken search functionality again, when I have time, I'll look into it.
In the mean time, install from the market webpage on the pc Searchmarket (https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...JjaG1hcmtldCJd) select your NST when it asks you, which will maybe appear just as phone, connect the NST to your wifi, and open market, wait a minute or two, and the app will install.
This app will work as a substitute to the search functionality on the market while its broken.

Google Now not working - Cannot click on search results

So I received my Nexus 7 on Monday and have consistently been having issues with Google Now. Basically, I cannot click on any of the search results. After rebooting the device, I can click the results and open in Chrome, maybe 3-4 times. After that 4th time, Google Now search results simply do not work (until I reboot the device).
I can see that the blue result is highlighted when I tap it, but Chrome does not open the link. I can +1 the results, and open links that don't open Chrome (for instance, the "did you mean..." will work, inside the Now application).
It is infuriating to not be able to use this core feature. I have even tried resetting the device (twice!). I am a US Customer, although I found in some searches that people outside of the US were having some issues.
I seem to have such an isolated problem that I cannot find anyone on the internet with the same issue. Is it just me? Is there something I am missing? Keep in mind, it works sometimes - so I don't believe it is setup incorrectly. Could the problem be with Chrome? I have cleared data on that application (in addition to resetting the device) but no luck.

I have the same problem, if I search in Chrome the links always work but sometimes when I search in Now they don't. Its intermittent and its working fine at the moment. It is very annoying. I thought it might be a symptom of the touch screen not working as has been reported elsewhere.
haven't looked this up yet, but would pushing the old apk from the 84D build restore all the features (pre-apple patent update)???
seems watered down on 4.1.1.

I've done some more troubleshooting and found out it is something wrong with my main Google account. I added my "back-up" google account to the nexus. I just turned off all sync options for it, but in Google Now I set the "back-up" as the account to use. Everything works fine every time! As soon as I switch to my main google account the problem comes right back.
I contacted google support this morning and they are going to look into my account to see if there is any corrupt data causing search issues.
Sadly, I already deleted all my web history thinking that something in there was the cause - it was not.
I will keep you posted.

Your observation about the PlayStore has been made by digixmax recently. I don't have a solution for that one. I still get a lot of (sometimes useless) apps on a search. You can use a computer to access the Store and have the app sent to your device.
I can confirm that both the Amazon App Store and the Kindle app are broken. You can still read local content with the Kindle app.
You can also get apps from direct-download sources and side load them.

It's remotely possible someone may tinker with the apps but unlikely. You might as well remove the Amazon App Store. If you have local .mobile content the Kindle app could still be useful.
Edit: Could you try something with Search Market? I did a search on "Kindle" and got 250 hits today. Use the menu "button" to access Settings and see if your app filter is too restrictive. I have mine set for all apps, but that does tend to give a lot of junk after the initial near hits. Maybe that's why people are getting so few hits?

Yes. When you start Search Market you get a keyboard and a blank search field. The menu button does nothing there. Directly to the left of the search field is a "button" that takes you to a more typical Market screen where, among other things you can look at "My Apps" for your NST. It's on this screen that the menu button wiil bring up Settings.
I don't know that I ever changed the restrictions on what kinds of apps to display but it occurred to me recently that this might be the issue you and others have been seeing. It's worth a shot, anyway.

When I do this, what I get (at the screen bottom) are "Search", "Downloads", and "Help", but no "Settings".
I am using the SearchMarket version you attached to your post here, so perhaps this behavior disparity has to do with my NST running on 1.2.1 as opposed to 1.1.2?

I have always run FW 1.21.
This whole thing just gets curiouser. I went back for a closer look and that "button" I mentioned actually calls the Market app (AFAICS) and it's there that I get a "settings" option along with the others you mention. There is a filter in the settings for what kinds of apps to display but I don't know to what extent the apps interact (if at all), and in any case, changing the filter setting seemed to have no effect. I still got many, many results from a search using Search Market.
So I went back to the original GApps post to see if the package had been updated since I did my install. Certainly the file name is the same and the size seems to be the same. There is some talk there about changing the way you sign into the Market, etc., but it's not clear to me when that changed and I rooted my NST with NookManager so long ago (or so it seems to me) that I just can't remember. I do still have the original zip of the Gapps Attack file, FWIW.
My "Market" app is 4.03 MB on the NST but there's no obvious version number anywhere I can see. However replacing that one seems risky since the whole sign-in thing with Google is so tricky.
I'm stumped. As clunky as the Search Market app is, it has been useful to me because it only displays apps that have the potential to run under Android 2.1. I went through many, many apps when I was looking for a sound recording app that would work well and create mp3 files. Using Search Market shortened what was already a tedious process.
