Does micro sd card show when connected to PC?? - Acer Iconia A500

Hello All
I've posted the question on the Acer Tablet Forum as well and thought might be useful to get some answerse here as well.
Can anyone access the micro sd card when the Acer is connected to the PC- I can't, only the Acer device storage shows.
Is it meant to show?
Tablet is not Rooted.
Thanks

Acer reply should be official support this funtion after v3.1.
But no detail release date.

Nope, it does not show-up in PC or in Mac. And as netspring said, it will be supported in HC 3.1.

If you are rooted, you can use a terminal (command line) app to MOUNT the micro card somewhere on the internal storage. Then you can copy files from the PC to the micro, but you can not see them on the PC side. Also, in my limited testing, if you transfer files from the PC to this "mount point" it creates 2 copies, 1 on the micro card and one in the internal mem. It is very odd behavior, and I think its issues like that, that prevented out of the box support until all the issues were resolved.

I'm using File expert, a free root explorer; first you copy the necessary files to your internal storage, then on your tablet copy them to mounted SD.

Sorry for my bad english.
HC 3.1 don't support this function.
Future should be support this function (May be HC 3.2).
No detail release date yet.

Thanks for responses all!
Was hoping HC3.1 would support this- ah well will have to wait!
I guess I'll keep copying to internal storage then to mico sd!
Cheers!

I use Droid Explorer on my pc, it gives access to the entire file system. It requires adb, and usb debugging on the tab, and may require root (not sure, maybe someone who is stock can test). But, I have access to all of my files, and the interface is nice.

Until a later release fixes the problem - Go old school, put the card into a usb card reader and connect to pc, connect A500 and move files back and forth to your heart's content.

Strange this.
I had an Archos 101, ran A2.2 and you could see both the internal sd and the external sd from a computer (mounted like any other removable drive).
Now, on the A500 with A3.0, and soon A3.1, we lose that function. What a moronic decision!

FYI, on the Asus TF, you can see the MicroSD as a subdirectory when connected to a PC/Mac. I guess like the SD card support itself, it is an "unofficial" solution, so there's no reason why Acer couldn't offer something similar.
Regards,
Dave

Another FYI, there is an app for NC called NookColorUMS that runs under Gingerbread and lets you mount any SD partition to make it visible to your PC. I'll try and see tonight if it loads/runs on A500's Honeycomb. Perhaps a 3.0 port exists, or could be made.

Does 3.1 fix this.....and other bugs as well??

Best solution for now - a microsd card reader is very very cheap - hook reader into PC, copy files to SD, put SD back in tab. Sure, bit of a pain - but better then the extra wait of having to copy large files twice (once to internal storage once to microsd).

I had wondered that myself and had hoped that HC 3.1 would allow this...guess we have to wait for 3.2 for that.
I keep getting the feeling that HC is "nearly there" but needs those few final tweaks to push it over the finish line. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't bother me personally and I'm an Android guy through and through, but I can see why Apple is so popular with some people.

And, yes, I know that Apple products don't even have the option of a micro sd card in the first place!

It's ok, we all start somewhere right?
Load up astro hit home then up and your usb storage device is whatever is in usb_storage. Remember to give it a few secs to detect it and prepare the drive.
Your SD card (internal) is sdcard and your microsd is external_sd.
GL.
Hope this helps.

Excellent! Thanks.
Is it possible to access the micro SD card through a computer? When exploring the acer drive after plugging it in you can see all the stuff on the internal memory but can't get to the external_sdcard folder.
at the moment i dont think this is possible but give it a few days and it might be a possibility.

You can purchase (I think it was a whole $1.50) an app called WiFi File Explorer. It sets your tablet with its own IP address from whatever source you are using for WiFi. Then you access your SD Card by entering in the IP address line in your browser. The app will give you the exact address line to enter into your browser.
Its like a virtual FTS server actually. Works like a charm. If you are worried about security, you can require a password.
Accessing external sd and usb drives
It is possible to access the SD and USB drives using a file manager such as Astro or Estrongs. The drives can be found in the main directory under subdirectory /mnt.
Hope this helps. I had the same problem at first.

According to Acer, that isn't possible right now. Not that I'm inclined to believe them, but the manual is pretty thorough and I decided to go through every page and it clearly states "Transferring files from a microSD card to your PC.
Remove the card from the tablet and use a card reader or USB adapter to access the card as an external storage device."
I'm REALLY hoping they address this in an update. I thought it was a Honeycomb limitation due to the Xoom but Asus has addressed it by looping it as a folder in the internal storage so I mean, Acer and Xoom should be able to do that as well. Unless there are unforeseen problems with doing that? /shrug.
USB and a camera
Thanks for starting this thread! I'm also a newb and I have Astro and ES installed (now).
I am trying to read images from my camera (Nikon D3). When I attach the USB and turn on the camera the A500 says scanning for media. But none shows up in the photo browser (I'm sure I need a better viewer and suggestions are welcome!). When using ES or Astro and navigating to the usb_storage directory it shows as empty.
For background, the D3 holds 2 CF cards with the 2nd typically used as overflow and both are 8GB. Each card normally just has a DCIM directory with photos in one or more directories below that.
Once I connected up the A500, on one of the cards 2 additional directories were created (the one without any images currently) called .android_secure and LOST.DIR. I can't see any of these directories on the A500 or any of the images (all .jpg). I plugged into my laptop for this info.
I am trying not to have to carry my laptop anymore so any suggestions, ideas or research resources would be appreciated.
I've run into a HUGE issue. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this.
The files on my USB flash drives begins to get erased/deleted if it is still connected to the tablet when the device is activated from hibernation mode. I don't know if the file explorer apps are causing this bug. I've used Linda File Manager and Astro and 3 different USB drives to test this. I've even restored my tablet to factory settings.
Hello,
I have also problems navigating the usb drive. As mentioned above I found the dir but it shows (Directory empty).Im using a 8gb transcend flash drive. On 128mb flash drive there is no problem viewing and accesing the files.Any other have the same problem or solution?
I change the file system from NTFS to FAT32 and it works now(such a stupid user Ive become)

You can enable USB Debugging, get the proper drivers installed, and use Droid Explorer, that is what I do.

Thanks for that information - yesterday I downloaded the drivers that were supposed to help with this but I still do not see the external from the pc.
What is droid explorer that you mention?
Thanks

Droid Explorer.
From what I've read, this is a honeycomb issue I've tried everything and can't see my external sd card on my pc. I've tried multiple programs that claim to work, but haven't found any yet.
I can't install droidexplorer on my computer, if errors out because of 64bit. I made the changes in the registry that are suggested with no luck.

I know that this is probably covered in another thread but, since it was mentioned in my resolution, I am curious the benefit to rooting?
Is it worth it for an average user?
Seeing external SD card
bweave - I am repeating what I have said in the "lost files from my sd card" thread, but here goes. I use the old fashioned method of mounting my sd card in a r/w card gizmo (I use a cheapo Wal**** Targus card reader writer) I attach this to my desktop via usb and then can see the card as a mass storage unit in Win 7. I can then delete files or add music/pictures/movies and when done I put the card back in my a500 where I can then see and display the files perfectly. I do realise that this is not the most tech savvy way of doing it but it works and touch wood I have never lost or corrupted a single file. In the other forum thread several people were continually losing files from the sd card. Now if you are talking about external usb hard drives and not just the sd card then I can recommend the app "USB Mount All v1.3" from the Marketplace with this you can see and mount/unmount all external sources - cards, thumb drives and hard drives. Hope my two penneth worth might be of assistance.
Sorry bweave forgot to mention if you use USB Mount All you will need to be rooted

I'd rtaher go and buy a microsd reader for my computer then root the tablet.. $4.05 with zero risk of bricking anything.

[Q] Kernel does not support usb storage

I just got my Iconia today and I used the gingerbreak root method and confirmed I had root and then installed CWM recovery via the Acer Recovery Installer but when I boot to recovery and try to run a backup I get the following message:
Kernel does not support usb storage
I am also not able to mount the sd card in either recovery or when the OS is running.
I don't see any other information about this problem. What have I missed?

I have the same problem, anyone know a solution.
My Iconia not read any USB pendrive or keyboard or mouse connected.
Please help!!!!
It does or at least it seem to if you look in the mnt dir you see directory for both external card and usb storage. It is just that the system does not but up any notices of have a card or usb storage unless you look in those directory or system storage setting.
Common problem, plenty of posts about it on here.
CWM is fussy about which SD cards it will work with. Either try formatting your card from the tablet or an Android phone, or try another card.
Smaller cards seem to work best.
Yes, FloatingFatMan rights. I do have problem with external sdcard with CWM before, try to update ROM. Just give it a clean fat32 format. Reboot the system until you are able to access external sdcard and back again to the cwm.
put the card before power on...
or the usb drive before power on...
CWM does not like you change sdcard when it's running
once the device is started on CWM , do not remove sdcard or else.

My SDCard (4Gb) is always in slot and in Android OS with File Manager HD i see it and i can use it normally.
Only in CWM i have this error, and i have problems with USB external storage: USB pendrives, mouse or keyboard connected to Iconia not work.
The Pendrive's led is on but not work in system, all USB pen drive(1Gb, 2Gb or 32Gb) i test are formatted in FAT32 and after Update to 3.1 Stock not work again.
I go to a shop with Iconia to test in it and my Pendrives work correctly in these devices with 3.0.1 HC.
I use a lot of different File Manager (Root Explorer, File Manager HD, Astro) with same result, if i go in /mnt/usb_storage i dont see anything.
Any solution?
My iconia is damaged or it's a software problem????

[Q] No sd on 3.2 ?

Hello it seems i'm the only one, didn't found a thread about that problem: since my 3.2 update the new sd function appears on my pc but the sd appears completly empty, well there is no file, but I can see the % completion.
PS: yes 3.2 brought appzoom & sd access via usb
But it took away ROOT Custom recovery,ad-hoc support, the ability to use Netflix. And who knows what else.
Soon acer will be coming to our homes to uninstall apps they do not approve of.Not to mention sensor what content we can see on the net.
But awesome on the SD card being available. Well almost under windows.

I believe that would be you. With 3.2 you can now access both internal and external SD card from your PC, whereas with 3.1 you could only access your internal SD card.
I've noticed the SD card is accessable through windows, but it doesn't appear to hot-mount properly. I have to put the card in, reboot the tablet, and then it works.
I'm really not impressed with Acer right now.

[Q] Write (download) to internal storage?

Total noob here. I did the CM 10.1 and gapps (the proper version). All -seems- to work well except it doesn't appear that I can download anything to the internal storage even though there's about 800MB available (according to the Settings).
Example 1: I installed the DropBox app and it tells me I have to use an external SD card. Doesn't seem to be any way around this.
Example 2: I installed an eBook reader named "UB" and, when I ask for it to download the user guide (the link to it appears within the app in my bookshelf), the app advises that I don't have an external SD card (which is true).
I'm wondering if this sort of mod (Android overwriting the stock B&N Nook Color software) means that I can't use the internal storage. Is this normal? If so, I can live with that as a microSD card is cheap and has much more space. I'm just an inquiring mind that wants to know.
If there's some sort of setting that I've missed—remember, this is my first Android device—I'd appreciate a pointer.
By the way, it appears as though the old method of side-loading my non-drm'd epubs isn't available. Is there an app for this? IOW: How would I turn on filesharing or have the device mount when plugged into my Mac or access a shared folder -on- my Mac? (I can enable SMB on my Mac if necessary.) I imagine I can use a microSD and simply use ana adapter to get it mounted on my Mac if all else fails.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Tried the first suggestion in A16 (adding that one line of code) but, after a power-off / remove card / power-on, UB and Dropbox complain about not having a card.
Frankly, as long as the apps I install go to the internal storage (and they do), I don't mind leaving the SD card in place. An extra 16GB is a good thing.
Next up is finding an app that restores the original "mount as external HD when plugging in to Mac with USB cable" feature that was present in the original NC software.
Thanks,
Barry
