so please forgive me if this is a dumb question but....
i seen the new 2.3.4 has USB host (best idea ever) and i wondering if 3.1 will have the usb host as well. also, i understand how hard and time consuming custom roms are, but what are the hurdling blocks to getting 3.1 to our devices? source? and by no means am i bashing anyone, thanks to everyone on this site i have a bad a$$ phone.
I know USB host was on Honeycomb 3.0, but I don't know if it was officially or what.. either way, USB host is possible to get on 3.1. And to your second question, it's the source. Google hasn't released the sources and we have no cousin device with Honeycomb, so we have to rely on running from all we get from the SDK. It's surprising how far they have come with it without sources, to be honest.

Hello everyone,
I have, as I think you have as well, watched Google I/O with large interest. One announcement was that Android now will be able to act as a USB-host, connecting everything from memory sticks to keyboards and mice.
This is really something I would like and use a lot, but do you people think that our Tattoo can handle this? First of all there is the hardware, is our phones' chips sufficient? And last, I haven't heard of any talk if it requires Android 3.1 or not,( but since I am not good in programming (yet)) do you think it possible for Tattoo?

I think it was implanted in 2.3.4 but not sure if its in the Cyanogenmod or any other ROM.Maybe it requires a newer kernel.
Hey all,
I am not a dev, I just dabble. Anyone try extracting any of the apks from the 3.1 sdk or Xoom? I am not sure if the USB connectivity is modular like that, but that could be useful until Acer gets off its a**.
I know dc13 bricked after trying to flash the Xoom rom, but is what I ask even feasible?
This is not a bump, but I think this is a valid topic. Anyone get any real good looks at the apks included with 3.1 on the xoom or in the sdk? I don't own one anymore so I can't check it and I currently do not have access to my computers to try the sdk.
How easy is it to root a Xoom? is it as easy as it was for us? if that is the case, I could probably go to a best buy, root it, and then do a system dump to my dropbox...logoff and leave >_>
I don't know if it is that easy to root, but I really appreciate the reply and willingness.
No one I know owns a tablet apart from iPad or ipad2. I am actually the first of my friends to have an Android tablet and around school, all I see are apple products. The good thing is that the best buy is like 5 minutes from my university, so it's no hassle going in. Plus the staff there is nice, so they won't mind =P
Theres a real easy one click root available for the xoom. I've got mine rooted and overclocked to 1.6 ghz along with having the sdcard slot working and usb hosting enabled.
Update Alert...

Endgadget report today that Acer will release Android 3.1 next month
So my advice is stop tinkering with OS and wait for the update.
This has not been answered yet as far as I searched the fora:
Is the 10.1V USB Host enabled? I wonder that there are USB adapters as accessoires. What would they be for if not for connecting the GT 10.1v as host?
Any information on this?
You would need the S30 to USB adaptor that will be releasing alongside the 10.1 and 8.9. There is no official confirmation yet that it will work with the 10.1v, but I'm pretty confident that it will.
You will also need Honeycomb 3.1, which enables USB host support. No release date for 3.1 on the 10.1v has been given, though pretty much everyone does expect 3.1 to come to the 10.1v somehow.
Allright, thanks. I supposed that it wouldn't work with 3.0. I do sincerely hope that the 10.1v will not be forgotten when releasing 3.1.
Ok guys i have noticed one thing since the jelly-bean boot came thundering down apon us and we made the break within hours to get jelly b running for the thankf of dev's alike as randomblame and waydownsouth.
Have we stopped checking or official though? did a search and seems there may be offical jelly bean for us.!!!........
be it that we may have to wait until the next big android update is due to get it from our update-unreliable Acer lol.
just dont understand why the site says the a500 is only available in india......err im in london bought close by retail mofo.

Of their different tablets (100, 200, 700.. etc) only the 500 series is available in India. Not you can only buy it in India. Those are the only ones you can buy in India.
and good find. WDS is doing excellent work, and at worst, this would only drastically speed up his efforts.

i would say its pretty likely as the a500 is one of the acer flagship tablets :victory:
Will USB devices still be supported in JB (and future releases)? The number of tablets with USB ports is decreasing.

They should be. The new thing is USB OTG. That pretty means with the right adapter( Micro USB to full size USB) you can still do USB host( mice keyboards, thumb drives etc). On phones I think this is a good idea, but on tablets I think its a bad idea. The full saize port was one of the reasons I bought the A500.
i would think, so android supposed to be adding more and more applicable usb drivers to accept more usb "add-ons" it wouldnt make sense to start removing one of the best features of android, like Drewmungus says they will problably just change the format on new tabs for OTG, which in my opinion is bull****, i already have a full size to micro usb cable lol

Well, let's see... my Nexus 7 has a USB port. Jelly Bean came with the Nexus 7... so, I'd say... yes?
nice, I was thinking acer would just abandon it like many other companies that released newer upgraded versions
now I guess the only question is how long will it take to actually get the update...
I wasn't aware that the nexus 7 had a usb port on it, but I'm glad to hear it.
nexus 7 has a mini usb port (the same exact port used to connect the a500 to your comp) not a full size usb port if thats what you are referring too
Probably because a fullsize USB connector is almost as thick as an N7...

Is the micro usb port a hub or just a charging port on the nexus sorry for ot. Also are there any other jb a500 roms on the web anywhere besides wds's?
It's a full-on USB port, that also charges. AFAIK, you can use standard USB devices with a dongle adapter, and you can also plug in a USB hub, too.
Thats interesting to know thanks I may have to get one after all
One of the biggest things I'm waiting for is for someone to utilize USB 3.0. I knew it was a long stretch for Samsung to include USB 3.0, but they are probably the closest to doing so.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/15/samsung-10nm-64gb-emmc-mobile-flash-memory/
So do you guys see USB 3.0 on the SGS5? Or is the technology not cheap enough to integrate it anytime soon? Anyone have any articles to share?
