You have the good one then, you should have no trouble rooting the phone. Now if once rooted you ever want to go back to stock with S=ON you'll need to be very very careful that you dont try to go back to original firmware before reinstalling the original radio. You'll end up with something that cant be changed then.
Sorry fir the noob question but what is s on and s off

If you see S-ON in your bootloader that means radio security is on. S-OFF, which you would see after you have rooted the phone, means radio security is turned off and bootloader is unlocked.

I suggest taking your time and reading stickies in development forum, to familiarize yourself with the terms frequently used and to understand what is being talked about. It might be a much better way to learn that what you're doing.

There should be a sticky at the top of each sub-forum saying just that.

Agreed. Things are far more complex than they were in the early days. It would be a long road. Rooting is the easy part

I disagree. It took an act of Congress to get root and install a new ROM just 8 months ago. ****'s cake now.
Well I went through a little time being nervous too but I read and read and just did it. Never asked 1 question. Still rarely do. I'm just saying if this is how the journey is starting it's gonna be long.

So there aren't 2 different boards for these phones? 32a-32b?

Doesn't matter for achieving root. That doesn't come into play until your flashing recovery/ROM/kernel.

Well it's mainly because most of the root procedures include flashing a new recovery/ROM. The idea of rooting in itself isn't device specific. It's simply adding the su binaries to the ROM.
I don't know what Hboot is and i don't know if i have 32a or 32b. I have like 250 mb of memory I think, I read somewhere that 32b has 192? I dunno.
My baseband is 62.50SJ.20.17u_2.22.28.25
Kernel 2.6.32.9-g93b855e
build number 3.56.531.1.cl300801 release keys
How do I know if i have the correct USB drivers installed?:
You NEED to put your phone on USB Debugging mode
You NEED to install make sure the Android drivers for your phone are installed
Make sure you DO NOT mount your SD card.
If you still can't get something to run, try doing it in recovery mode.
I know I can mount my sd card when I use usb, but does that mean the usb drivers are installed?
Do u have sdk installed on your PC?
Sent from my Dream/Sapphire using XDA Premium App
I have SDK installed on my pc, but I don't know how to use it.
Well I used that oneclick root and it worked. niiice, although when I go to emulator and type SU nothing happens, but when the program did the root test, it said it was rooted. so I don'tk now
I am not sure on even how to get into any mode after phone is shut off. I want to try installing some roms, but obviously I need radio and spl to install. I don't know how to do that with the MT3G
When u open terminal u get
$
When u type su u should get a new line with
#
Does this happen?
Read the stickies at the top of this general section. U will find all the info u can handle on fastboot, adb, sdk and so on

Yes i got SU I had to restart the phone to get it to engage.
I just traded some one an HD7 for this MyTouch 4G.... Yayyy, back to Android ! Well, they already have it rooted and everything, but I like to start from scratch when I am modding my phones. I am coming from a Cliq so I'm not familiar with HTC. How should I go about unrooting the phone? And where should I start in the forum while trying to get familiar with modding this phone?
If it's already rooted, why unroot it? I would just make sure the latest recovery is installed, wipe it, and flash whatever ROM you want.
I'd you are looking to mod it... then you want to keep it rooted.
Its a good thing. You can even run the stock rom and make backups of all your apps and settings.
Root is good!

+1....As Rockstarar said, the pd15img makes you go back to being unrooted. The pd15img is the stock OS image and the thread will on that will explain how to flash it.
After that I'd say check out the "Guide to permaroot" thread, that will explain the process in getting rooted permanently. Next you should check out the thread for clockworkmod Recovery 3.0.0.6, thats a version that enables us to flash both 2.2 and 2.3 base roms. Alot of ppl miss that thread and end up using the wrong recovery to flash roms and as a result they get boot loops.
After that you're good to go! Got alot of options in the development section to choose from, so pick ur poison
I remember when I jus started this thing I had no clue where to start so that should give you a nice guideline on how to get going
Thanks!! I can't wait to get started =P.
Good luck!
I know this is probably the wrong section but I figured this is where I would get the best answer. I rooted and got s-off using grankins guide. Recently I got a factory replacement and turned the s-on to send it in but like a dummy I forgot to put the radio back to stock. I tried using the same guide to try to get s back off but it wont work. Any ideas?

Why does it matter if the radio is back to stock they don't check it.i sent in a phone fully rooted and they didn't care or notice

I think you are stuck if you didn't revert back to stock radio before unrooting. Look at this post.
yup, should have done som emore reading b4 getting s=on. It needed to be stock in order to get root again..

If I remember correctly you can't. You need to be fully rooted meaning s-off. Basically s-off means radio sercurity off, among other things turned off. If you try to flash anything through clocklworkmod recovery without s-off,either nothing will happen or your phone will be bricked an you will have to buy a complete new phone. Best thing to do is fully root(s-off). If you need help rooting your phone, send me a pm,an ill help you out.

You're right that you must be rooted to flash in recovery, but you do not flash radios in recovery. They are flashed in the bootloader, and I'm not sure root access is required to flash a PD15IMG.zip file in the bootloader. I'm leaning towards root not being required, but I don't know for sure. Might as well go ahead and try it. The worst that could happen is you get the "access denied" message and the installation aborts.
I was thinking that about the radio, I just flashed my first one. After having my phone rooted for 6months. Only reason why I said root the phone. Is to make sure he has full control over the phone. An it takes some risks out, some but not all.

Yea, I was about to say you don't use cwm to flash a new radio but you got it. : P lol

Radios can be flashed in bootloader - otherwise stock firmware updates wouldn't be able to upgrade radios - but they most probably need to be signed to be flashed by S-ON bootloader. In that case, the answer to the OP would be "no".
Does anyone know for sure if I can flash the gingerbread update pd15img.zip even though I'm rooted by gfree with the eng hboot?
I can't get the unroot method to work, that's why i'm asking.

You can't flash a PD15IMG.zip RUU in recovery. It's only flashable in the bootloader.
Please don't post advice if you don't know what you're talking about.

Either way, neither of you have answered the question, so I don't care. You could've kept that comment to yourself and so could he cause he obviously doesn't know a thing about what I'm talking about.
To others who view this, please don't post unless you know the answer. Thanks.

It wasn't a random "comment". XDA is a database like all forums, so even if you already knew the answer yourself, it's important to correct misinformation for anyone who may come across this thread in the future.
Not cool of you to get mad at him when he's just trying to help you.
That kind of an attitude will just deter people away from even wanting to help you out.
Just sayin'.
To answer your OP, why not use the Froyo PD15IMG.zip? Are you trying to unroot your phone?
Using the GB PD15IMG.zip probably wouldn't be the best idea even if it worked. Because if it worked then you're stuck at GB which can't be rooted ATM.

Then why not just flash the update? There's like 3 flashable versions out there in the developmental section.
I flashed it last night, not that great. Don't know how you could choose that over Virtual Unity's Sense 3.0, but I guess to each their own.

I have the 'bad' chip and I'm trying to lose root just in case something happens, I also want the update cause froyo was glitchy and I'm starting to have tiny but irritating issues with unity, like wifi calling and my home screen disappearing.
