I think I may have fried my Incredible - Droid Incredible General

I think I may have fried my Incredible last night. I was flashing or backing up my phone last night, I don't remember really, and fell asleep with it in CWM. I woke up some time later to find my phone in my bed in CWM and it was scorching hot. I took the battery cover off and took the battery out and went back to sleep.
About ten minutes ago when I woke up (yea I'm lazy lol) I tried to boot into CWM, nothing. I tried to turn it on normally, nothing. I plugged it into the charger and all I got was a blinking red light.
Anyone know if the battery is just fried or if the whole phone is fried? If it's just the battery I have an extra one at my other house about 90 minutes away (which I'll be going to in a few hours).

Hey I'm kind of a noob myself. Never had this problem, but which part was the hottest? You might be able to put in a new battery. Maybe you can order a new one like the extended battery

I don't remember, I had taken ambien lol I remember I had stretched out, felt it in my bed and it was hot, saw it was in CWM, then took the battery out and passed back out. IIRC the battery was pretty damn hot. I had this happen with my OG droid but it was only scorching hot for a few minutes and it was fine after, possibly because the case was aluminum and acted as a heatsink.

The red blinking light indicates that there is not enough battery power to boot up the phone. Leave it on the charger for about 20-60 minutes, and if it doesn't boot up then you may need a new battery-

Thanks, I'll give that a try.
Edit; that fixed it! Any idea why it would get so hot in cwm?

What all are you doing on CWM and how many hours. Brightness is also a factor.
I'm glad you saved your Incredible, though lol.

I'm not sure, like the user above pointed out it likely depended on what you were doing. If it was something that involved constant CPU usage then that would cause the battery to heat up since it'd be draining more power than if it were idle.
I really don't know the workings of CWM well enough to give you a good answer

Thats the odd thing, I wasn't doing anything it was sitting there idle while I was sleeping. I have no idea how many hours it was on (could have been 30 minutes or it could have been four hours).

Just a guess, it's probably because there's no power management going on, so everything's going 100% and loading down the battery.

CWM seems to drain batteries even while charging, and causes my phone to heat up a lot. I don't know the cause, only that it happens.

N1 gets really warm when charging....................

well when i first got my phone i only charged it when the battery light was red and hollow. And at times i would put it under my pillow due to the alarm being so loud, didnt want to wake up my son.
But the past few days when i charge it and put it under my pillow it gets really warm, it never did this before, any reason why?
AFAIK all phones do, as well as any battery you charge (MP3 players, laptops, etc).
yea I agree, I think that is something most smartphones do, my mytouch did it... so did the g1
Thats because it charges at 1000mA via AC.
Don't charge it under your pillow! definitely not good for it.
Today I charged for an hour my n1 over usb.
It was really hot.
Then I go to home, and when I arrived, it was again really hot, and battery life is over.
So I reboot and now is ok, but is very very strange...
yeah they get hot, i have the battery life widget and also shows the battery temperature, when it was charging it peaked to 110 degrees lol
I came from a mytouch 3g, didnt have it long, i love Android, i guess i change the alert to something more calm. But before i charged it under my pillow and it never got hot. Maybe its a wear and tear thing
Any device to which you're pumping power into, or using power, generates heat. That's how it works. The only difference between the devices is how much it draws; the more it draws, the hotter it gets.
Yep. Don't charge under your pillow. It needs air or it will get super hot. Not a good thing.
Man...I thought my N1 was going to burst into flames today. 114.5 degrees...not sure if it would have gone any higher.
I was in the car using an AC/DC adapter. Had my navigation going along with my music. The glass on the phone got hot to the touch! I unplugged it right away.
How high of a temp can this phone endure without damage? If it were to overheat, would it just freeze up and shutdown?
Anyway...what's really weird is that the phone was plugged in when battery life was at 80...when before I unplugged...it was at 79. Huh?
warm nexus!
i charged my nexus tru the usb a few days ago, yes it got warm like always but when it was fully charged. it stayed warm even when it was unplugged from the usb. i know that was kinda odd and it drained the battery, it was at 76% just after 30mins. so i reboot and everything went back to normal. what the hell?! i think its a bug. what i do now just to be safe is i reboot the nexus after every charge and check if it stays warm...

[Q] DEfy battery swelling

just happened yesterday,
felt my defy very hot in my pocket and turned it off. after a while, turned it on, and it was ok. the only thing i noticed was that the battery was draining very fast. i thought that this can be fixed by calibrating the battery, so i drained it till it is on 1%. turned it off and charge it. it reached 100% in over 2 hours but when i tried to turn it on, it wouldnt. so i unplug it from the wall and removed the battert. thats when i noticed that it is swollen and couldn't hold any charge.
anybody has this similar experience? is this hardware or ROM related. using ICS CM9 03/05. defy is 1yr and 3 months old.
sounds VERY BAD! lithium ion batteries explode violently and then catch fire. get rid of it immediately, bury it if you have to.
This happened to an older Nokia I had. The battery is dead and it's very risky to keep forcing it by charging. Get rid of it, better safe than sorry.
Trimis de pe Defy CM9
i did got rid of it. the question now is how did it happen if defy has overcharge protection? or is it just that i got a bad battery
I think you got a bad battery, it's not acceptable to get in that state after only 15 months. You should be in that 2-year warranty period, the battery should be changed on that basis. Give it a try, it might work.
My Nokia had over 4 years when the battery got fat and died .
Trimis de pe Defy CM9
Same problem
I had a Defy and its been about a month since i last used it and i found it just a min ago and the battrey had swelled up from the top and bottom now i have put it in a bag as the guys on here said better safe than sorry.
Swelling and/or overheating while charging can only mean you have a big problem with the battery, also if the battery feels malleable, there is something very very wrong...
Make sure that the battery doesn't leak fluids and avoid contact with water at any cost.
Also... recycle the battery and not throw it in the garbage so the chemicals will be dealt with properly.

yes it happened to my defy.i tried many methods but nothing worked. my phone was bricked .so there nothing for me to do. so in order to flash i needed the battery. (back 2 froyo) my defy was 3 years old . it showed nothing till this battery thing showed up.so i went to ebay bought a battery for 6.76 dollars and flashed it back to froyo. now it is running fine on cm 11. i suggest you do the same.

Nexus 4 Overheated??

I went to bed with my nexus 4 charging under my pillow for about 3 hours. This is how I usually store my phone when I sleep because I don't have a night stand and haven't had any other problems with my other devices. Anyways, I woke up and it was realllly hot. First thing I noticed was that it had stopped charging as the charging indicator was not on and this has been happening for a while now. I tried awaking it and it wouldn't do anything. I tried again and it got stuck at the Google logo. I then shut it off and tried booting it into recovery mode with TWRP and from there powered it off from there I rebooted the system. I then powered it on as normally and it worked.
I'm thinking all that work was just a way for time to pass and let the device cool itself.

plugged in(generates heat) under a pillow(heat insulation).. not a wise idea, actually a very dumb idea. sounds like your battery overheated, i dont think tbe cpu would overheat before the battery. battery overheats at 60C, cpu overheats at 100C.

if i leave my phone charging on the couch cusions, it gets warmer than letting it charge while on my table, because the couch cusion insulates better, keeping the heat from escaping from below the phone. if i cover the phone from both sided with insulation, im sure that it would eventually overheat the battery. plus right now its warmer, outside and in my home, so it warms up faster and cools down slower.
Charging under your pillow and sleeping on your head on that same pillow isn't really a good idea.1st it isn't recommended because its harmful to your health since your phone transmits radio waves. Did you rest your head on the same pillow? I agree, the pillow trapped heat of the phone.

Moto X frozen

Welp had my phone for less than 24 hours and its basically dead. A little backstory, I had the phone down to 4% battery and decided to try the turbo charger out. I had it plugged in for about 20 minutes and came back to a pretty hot phone that was frozen. I unplugged it and it was at 50%. I plugged it into a normal charger and went to sleep. When I woke up the phone was off and still somewhat warm. Since then it turns on fine but freezes after being on for about 5 minutes. Any idea what is going on? I am pretty disappointed; but on the other hand sounds like I got the first lemon.
Looks like a faulty device, better return it and have a peace of mind.
Oh man, that sucks! I have noticed the phone gets extremely warm when charging ...
I guess you are going to have to get on the horn with Motorola support and see what they say. If they can't solve it hopefully they can get you a replacement rather quickly!
Keep us posted!
MOTO X PURE EDITION!
The heat concerns me on these phones. I've got an LG G2. I kept it on kitkat due to their lousy Lollipop upgrade that basically ruined my phone. It charges faster than any phone I've had, does not get hot and has the same size battery. I don't understand why the phone has to get so hot when charging. I hope they don't start having exploding batteries or other hardware failures like the OP is having.
Yeah I used my normal charger because I didn't trust keeping it plugged in over night. After about 10 restarts the phone started back up and was "optimizing apps". Now it's working but does get hot still. After a few talks with moto support I can confidentiality say they are worthless.

I definitely noticed the heat the first time I charged it. I pulled it off the charger this morning and it didn't feel warm at all. Not sure what the deal is.
I had a Nexus 6 for a while and any of these quick charge phones get warm when they are being charged. The quick chargers pump a lot more current into the battery than a standard charger. Electronics can take a lot of heat before they fail.
Has it frozen up on you again? I was going to recommend a factory reset, but I would definitely call Moto and see if they can get you a replacement sent out.
The phone will definitely get hot when charging at times. That's just a byproduct of charging, especially at 25 watts. Nothing to worry about too much, but it should have some smart circuitry that cuts off after a certain temperature or time is reached.

Mine did the same thing! Out of the box everything worked great - for like an hour. After that it's been non stop freezing up and the screen staying off with random vibrations.
I tried factory reset and going into recovery and wiping the cache. Nothing helped.
I had to call Motorola and they refunded my money and emailed a return label to ship it back. I'm going to have to order a new one.

Won't turn on, no lights, but warms up when plugged in.

As the title says, Phone won't turn on. There are no led lights at all. It does get warm after being plugged in for a little. I had jrkruse's hybrid_bra1 stock safetynet samsungpay...... rom on it. It was rooted. Very minimal processes running. I actually had basically everything stopped and greenify on. Phone was around 40% battery. I plugged it into charger, took my dog outside, showered real fast, washed a few dishes, then came back in to room within 15 minutes to my phone being dead and hot. It's never got this hot before even while rooted and plugged in with this rom on it. I have never had it get that hot. Was just formatted the day before and really bare but, that is what happened.
A couple battery apps I had put the batteries remaining life capacity at around 60%. It held a charge poorly. Even for 60% capacity it felt weak, considering how little I did on it lately. I am thinking the battery may have took a crap but unsure because it warms up when it is plugged in. I plan on getting a battery soon since they are inexpensive and replace it to try it out.
Just wondering if anyone here has any experience with this and can offer any advice.
Thank you in advance.
(I looked for a min or two for similar posts but didn't find much. Will gladly take down if someone can point me the way)
You say your battery was already outworn, It may have died. I think you should try with a new battery, Or take it to a technician who can test the phone's hardware to see if there is anything else broken
i've only had one similar case with an s3, which would turn of at random % of battery. But when plugged turned on. I replaced the battery and it worked fine then

funny story....
The mic in my Nubia Red Magic broke and I sent that back to hong kong for repairs like 20 days ago. Before the Red Magic, I used this galaxy s7 edge my friend gave me. I gave it back when I got the Red Magic and told him to sell it or something. Not much later, decided to buy it back off of him for $200 to give to my mother. She loved it. I had the gs7 edge with me exploring prepaid provider options for my mom when the Red Magic mic broke. So then I decided to borrow the edge from her till my phone got back and few days later I break this one too..
I feel naked without a phone for so long haha

I have the same rom, with charging issues. I don't think its the rom causing it. The s7e are getting old and the batteries are taking a toll with the age. My phone will charge up to 81 at night and stay there. I get better results with wireless charging so i just top my phone off during the day with my wireless charger. There is a code to reset the battery's internal memory, if i find the link on how to do it I will post here for you.

Thanks for reply and alright let me know if you find out. My phone had no problem charging to 100% Its just the 100% on the status bar wasnt 100% of the 3600 capacity from wear. My friend's also does the same thing as yours except his he cant charge more than like 24% haha. He just uses it as a plugged in music player in car.... I am getting battery in the mail tomorrow and will see what I can do.

A little late, sorry. lol.
Thanks for suggestion, however, I may have worded my statement incorrectly. I meant to say that My phone would charge to 100% and the status bar displayed it as 100% but, the health and total capacity of the battery in mah was not the maximum 3600 or so due to simple wear and tare. It isn't apparent within any stock android feature however, battery monitoring apps like accubattery gather statistics after several charging sessions and estimate the current mah capacity. Mine was much lower than the default oem stated value of 3600. So my battery could be charged 100% but the 100% is really only 2400 mah lol. It was obvious either way by noticing that after my time using it and the previous owner's bad charging over night habits, that the battery was gradually needing charged more often lol..
I did read about the calibration method before when I was first looking into the battery issues. It seems it is more often done after a new battery is installed.
I screwed up a new battery install at the last second. I had to stop due the tiniest little round metal piece coming off from a very light swipe of my plastic spudger.
It was a very small wire connector piece. Unbelievably irritating. I didn't even finish because I doubt it would work properly. I beleive it is for the rf cable or something not sure. The red one on the left bottom side of the logicboard/motherboard whatever. There are three of them.
I took it apart and put it together a couple times prior to this and in a hurry it popped off and I couldnt find it. I couldnt find out the exact part name online so I could buy one and solder it back on. I did find a site/ supplier that has a plethora of them though. They are tiny coaxial connectors/pins. I didn't look through them all but there are 6,000 some listed under coaxial connectors (RF). https://www.digikey.com/products/en/connectors-interconnects/coaxial-connectors-rf/437?k=coaxial pin
I haven't gotten around to asking samsung or the digikeys support if they could help me find out which it is. They have different sizes and frequency ratings or speeds and such. The phone is packed away until I manage to figure out which pin to buy or if I pull 80$ or so out of my behind and buy a whole new motherboard logic board haha.
