hey,
i have a tytn that doesn't have any orange customisation (for the first time i almost wish it did!).
for some reason my umts/gprs connection seems to hang. it looks like it's still connected but it isn't. sometimes it's just a case of resetting the connection in comm manager and at it's work i have to soft reset!
anyone else suffer this? if so, how did you fix it?
cheers
I'd say everyone suffers from it. The reason it's not reported/discussed/solved is because most people don't require constant data connectivity and therefore never discover the problem.
I just posted about this problem yesterday:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297002
So far it seems to be a problem related to WM itself since it affects different devices.
thanks for the response, but maybe I should make myself clearer.
i've had an spv m500 and m600 and never experienced this.
when I say it hang I don't mean after a significant amount of time. this happens about every 10 minutes! as you can imagine this is incredibly frustrating!
Does it do this if you select gsm only rather than auto?
may be a silly question, but how do I change it?

Start>Settings>Personal>Phone Icon>Band Tab and here you can choose GSM and certain bands only instead of auto.
Mike
if you find this does help, then you might want to look at
http://commmgrpro.com/_wsn/page3.html
which is a little app which will switch from band to band from your today screen.
thanks marisa! a neat little app!
anyway, it seems to not hang on gsm. is 3G unstable? or is it my device?
Lots and lots of people seem to have one kind of problem or another with 3G.
I personally think that these devices have problems with switching from one to the other as signals become stronger & weaker, and that's when connections get dropped etc.
I discovered this when trying to use MSN messenger to give me a kind of push email on hotmail. It worked, but only while logged in to messenger, and when the connection dropped, so did the log in!
So, now I'm always connected by gsm, and when I really want to download something quickly etc etc, I switch over to 3g and then back again.
A bit tedious, but at least I know that when I think I'm connected I am!
good answer! it's kinda what i'm thinking now! hell, if the thing is in my pocket should I really care that the d/l speed is whack! like you said I think in future i'll gsm when my device is not in my hands and 3G when i'm browsing!
thanks a lot for the heads up on that app and your advice!
No probs, I've solved most of my issues through this forum, now on the Hermes, and before on the XDA IIi. You'll find it does wonders for your battery life too!
I have installed and uninstalled a number of firmware/mod combinations on my xv6800 in hopes to get the GPS working. I don't believe that's going to happen (saddly, I feel like there's a conspiracy out there to trick peeps like me into spending weeks on this problem without any positive outcome) so I'm currently focusing on what DOES work with this device.
One thing that's flakey is the wifi. At home I'm running WEP128. It connects sometimes, others it will not. When it does not automatically connect but sees it, it asks for the key each time. What's the deal with that? Entering my long a$$ key each time has made me memorize it, but it's still a serious PITA. I don't have the same issue at most other places - still using WEP128. Doesn't appear to have any issues connecting to open APs. Does have issues connecting to a friend's AP, i that it doesn't even SEE it as available any more, after the initial 3-4 connects.
Thoughts on why this could be happening? Not having the GPS makes me very angry, but then to not have reliable wifi practially makes the device pointless, as I have another phone, my own PED and an actual good camera... and a laptop.
thanks for any helpful thoughts.
Chris
Chris,
I'm assuming from your post that the "XV" indicates you have a Verizon Phone? If so you might look at this link pertaining to GPS

I'm not sure what to tell you about the WiFi. Mine works fine...

I have the verizon Titan and just use mac filtering on my wireless router. The encryption slows it down to much for me and basically need the same encryption scheme on both sides to get it to work properly. I don't do anything that it needs to be encrypted and the mac filtering keeps the neighbors out as well.

Wow, of all the tuts and instructions I've tried and read, that one has never crossed my screen - and I have tried at least 4-5 different ones. The phone's already unlocked and has a custom rom on it. I didn't get an impression either way if this method will reset the device/settings/files/etc in it again. I guess I could try it out. Thanks.
I'm getting to the point of just wanting to pay someone to get teh GPS working on it.
The Wifi issue is just weird and flakey. No rhyme or reason I can see.

I think of doing that often... but well... I don't have a but. WEP is hackable, but feels secure enough , considering I have a bunch of secure APs in my neighborhood... some obscurity helps as well.
I know that sometimes if I restart my AP (linksys wrt54g) the xv6800 will just find it and connect on it's own.

There is absolutely no reason why gps should not work on your device. In fact in this forum we really don't even discuss it too much anymore because it's really just an understood thing to be working. If you are on verizon use the latest alltel radio 3.42.xx I can't remember exactly, load dcd's 3.2.6 or 3.3.4 and start from there. Wifi on these roms have power saving features make sure if you are using wifi that you have strength up to full. Also, all the moguls that I have had, DO NOT COUNT ON THEM AUTOMATICALLY FINDING ACCESS POINTS, simply go to start->settings->connections "view all available access points" and select the one you want to use. I have heard cases of gps having trouble locking if wifi is on so make sure the switch is off and vise versa. Do the verizon qpst and registry settings change. On verizon you should have a lock within 30 seconds everytime if you are within the continental US. Good luck and take your time.

I have 3.42.something new within the last two months. My first attempt was with the DCD. Nada.
As for finding available access points, at my friend's place, it just shows it listed as unavailable. At home, it will SEE it and even attempt to connect, but often fails, except for those random times when it will connect.

Hm... will it maintain the lock with the wifi turned back on afterward? The whole point is to be able to use gmaps with the GPS. I can install other s/w that has it's own maps as well, bypassing the need for the wifi, but for starters, getting GPS working first is important.
It's a verizon phone, but I don't have service turned on yet. I'm not going to switch my number over until I'm happy with how it's set up. I do not intend on using a data plan - too expensive, so wifi when in range and other gps s/w when I'm not will be used.
Thanks for the words of encouragement. I have taken some serious time with this. The nice thing is that I don't have to rush, so I've tried MANY different things from the forums and even the PPCgeeks IRC channel. If I practice any more patience, I'll be sleeping.

That phonenews article was VERY helpful in getting me started, but:
It is ancient. Those old roms have problem. Use the newest DCD roms and radios found here. (thanks DCD and everyone)
ALSO, on the GPS.
If you EVER, EVER, installed the new Verizon MR1 upgrade, the GPS is locked. No worky no more..... But, simply find the older Verizon rom, it can be found. Downgrade to it and run it. Then go straight to the DCD rom/radio.

I did try the MR1 upgrade based aGPS hack, but I then realized that aGPS only matters if you've got a working GPS at all. Anyway, I then downgraded again and started over from scratch. I got my phone in September and did my series of hacks/upgrades/unlocks over the course of two weeks or nightly tries and retries. It's nice to hear someone say it WILL work, but Murphy's Law is working overtime with me on this one.
It is my understanding that if you don't have internet access than gps will not just not work on mogul. The gps one chip I believe is strictly an AGPS chip and cannot lock without using agps. However I guess some people have done it and use it, although even if you get it to work the lock will take forever. The mogul really needs that emphemeris data from the north american gps servers to function correctly. I didn't realize these were your terms.

I've never seen it written anywhere that one would be required to have a data connection with the service provider to get a GPS lock. Seems ridiculous to me. If I wanted to pay for a data connection, then why the heck not just pay for the VZ Navigator access??
I've never seen aGPS as a requirement either. If all the tuts were about aGPS, I'd see that having that data connection was important. Boy, I sure could use a definitive on this. If I KNOW for fact that GPS just doesn't work without a data connection, I'd have to suck it up and get an external bluetooth GPS device if I care enough. I have believed however all along that the whole point was to access GPS hardware without incurring data charges.
thanks,
Chris

Also, not trying to undermind you, but why did you aquire the mogul if you weren't planning on using internet access? I mean you loose live search, google maps, pic and video messaging, skyfire, ie, youtube, and pretty much everything that makes a mogul a mogul. If you bought it for the soul purpose of using as a gps device you definitely bought the wrong device.

TOTALLY reasonable question.
I will use the phone when I have it set how I like it.
I got it so I could have a reasonably convenient way to freely check my email and surf when in wifi range without needing to lug my laptop around with me. I got a good price on it, much cheaper than an actual laptop.
Nice sized screen for when I want to actually watch a ripped movie or TV show and the option to install other software on a whim to have with me is just great. I got a ppc that can be a phone essentially. I'm not a phone person, too cheap to pay for a text plan, but wifi is key. The ability to open this phone up for GPS use was a major factor in picking it from lots of research before diving in.
Hi folks'
I am sorry if I have put this where it doesn't belong but it is valuable info all the same.
Name: T-Mobile Internet
APN: general.tmobile.uk
now most of the posts I have read advise to leave the rest of the fields blank but..
Username: User
Password: tm
With these fields left blank my data dropped always after only a couple of minutes...but now it flies almost like being on wi-fi.
I hope this helps.
Thanks and sorry if I have offended anyone.
Has one else tried this as yet, I have tired a few different APN settings for T-Mobile UK but still receive the data drops.
Im going to try this one now.
Well, I't does seem stable at the minute, only have GPRS signal at the moment and seems quite speedy, Ill see how I get on when I travel home later and it switches from mast to mast, that when I usually get the data drops.
I just use the settings off the T-Mobile support page for the Desire (which include the username and password in the first post), never had any problems.
Just make sure you set up the seperate APN's for internet and MMS
Data Drop continues!!
Unfortunately, the APN settings failed to work as per all the other APN settings I have tried.
Data still fails to work for any set time. Anyone have any updates apart from APN's that would be great?
I know there is another thread on this subject so I will expect this thread to be closed or moved at somepoint.
T-Mobile UK APN
Hi Trojan 550,
Why be so hasty in expecting the thread to be removed just cos it doesn't work for you. It works fine for me and obviously fine for chrisjasper.
You say there is another thread ......well thats obviously done you no good either, do you think it may be you that is the problem.
Dont be selfish in your expectations of having this removed lets give others a chance first and get their feedback. I am not saying it is perfect but why give it up just because YOU say so.
Maybe in your haste you make mistakes. Have another try.
I dont wish to sound rude but come on mate be fair eh.
Thank you for reading.
Im just aware that duplicate threads get removed by the mods, It wasn't the fact that the fix doesn't work.
Trojan550
I must apologise I took you completely the wrong way. I do now realise what you are saying. Thank goodness you replied with such dignity, you are obviously a better man than me.
I can let you know however that my connection is still solid with the APN's as specified in my first post.
I wish you the very best in resolving yours.
Maybe you could point me to this other thread as I havn't seen it myself.
Once again I am sorry.
Scirroco
Came across this thread just as I was about to go back to an RMNet build which all appear to have SOD and camera problems for me.
I changed the settings to the first post but no joy, I then changed the APN back to general.t-mobile.uk, set user name to "user" (all lower case) and password to "tm" removed all other settings including server which was set to one letter (not sure why or what it was), and so far so good.
Before making theses changes I would suffer constant discos, but this seems to be working for now (fingers crossed).
I am using chucky Light OCT, Radio 2.15.50.14 Rom is BiffMod HD2 1.2 (which includes Hastarin R8.2).
Just as another question, are you guys roaming on orange, do you think this might throw another spanner in the works for PPP?
Well connections were better today, but still not constant, have just tried the libhtc_wrapper.so from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824413 and option 2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838583, not sure if I made the changes in the right place as I have root/etc and system/etc, later only has the changes. So far it seems much faster and connection is constant. Will update again tomorrow...
I have changed radio back to 2.12 from 2.15 and this seems so much more stable though still getting drops but much better than when i was on 2.15 might be a coincidence who knows.
Im using 'user' and 'tm' for the APN settings also.
I wish it would just be a simple fix its doing my head in
Let us know how you get on MACPAD?
Hi fellow Brits
The Hastarin options.smd 1 and 2 don't work for me, but the when I set it back to blank and us the libhtc_ril_wrapper V0.3 for now works pretty much all the time. If I do get a disconnect it reconnects fairly quickly. Will try V0.4 and see how that goes.....
[Q] I keep getting: - "Data Connectivity Problem - The server failed to communicate"
"Data Connectivity Problem - The server failed to communicate. Please try again later"
I keep getting this message when I try to connect to some websites.
How can I overcome this situation please??
I have searched this and other forums but not found the answer.
I have tried resetting - power offs - etc, etc but this message keeps appearing and I remain totally unable to get onto some sites that I need to spend a lot of time on.
I am in UK on o2 network but use wifi most of the time.
Help please.
I have also now tried sim cards from Tesco Network and Vodafone Network but still get the same result.
Please help me if you can
What rom are you using? The JMG rom for example has wifi connectivity issues. Or are you having trouble using cellular network?
Not sure what ROM I am using (i am unsure of how to find this out) and yes I still get same issue when using cellular network.
The problem is your browser is not compatible with your webserver. I had this problem back in blackberry days. Download dolphin or opera to see if a different browser fixes your issue.

I suggest for you to search around for a APN setting that suits your network provider. Sometimes it may be caused by that.
Wrong apn settings would keep you from even connecting to your cellular network. You wouldn't be able to get any message.
Same here
I've had my tab for only a few weeks, and have had a very shaky wifi connection because of the same error you get.
With the wifi I can logon no problems, but I continue to get the error you mentioned. The stock browser is essentially useless with this, so I tried many others. Dolphin HD, Opera Mini & Mobile, Miren, and Firefox beta were mostly better, but still not really useable. The best I found (even though I think some of the others are better browsers) is Skyfire. It doesn't seem to suffer the wifi issues to the same extent as any of the other browsers.
The wifi issue seems very strange, and I think it is more my ageing Netgear router. It doesn't work well close up when I get a full strong signal, but is acceptable (not good) when I am in the next room or even outside. The only thing that really worked was switching back to b from g, but I didn't stay with that for more than a couple of days because of the speed difference.
I have also flashed to Rotohammer's latest ROM JMI (unfortunately with the same issue, and no GPS).
I will continute to try various things I find around this forum, but as you say, no one seems to have an answer.

Well I have had a "slight" success in that I installed Mozilla Firefox and it allows me to sign into the "offending" websites/forums etc.
It is slow but at least it is doing the job!!
Any other suggestions would be most welcome.
You are not alone in this frustrating issue. I have a T-Mobile Tab and I constantly have data issue when on the celluar network. I constantly have to reset the data by turning off and on airplane mode or holding the power button to reset the data and as a last ditch effort, I just switch it to GSM only *Shudders* Wifi works flawlessy. Data on the other hand is shaky at best. I will try another browser other than stock today. Honestly I suspect the issue to be APN related because it's definitely not the SIM card related, as i've changed that several times. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Rangercaptain - I found this reference also, but could not figure out where this server might be. Logically there is only my tab, router, adsl modem, and my internet service provider (Telstra). I could only think that the 'tomcat' server could only be within Telstra, but also thought that if this was the issue there would be many more people complaining about this isue.
Can you throw any more light on which direction I should look to follow this through? I am also puzzeled about where I might change things to make my browser 'compatable'.
Thanks very much for your interest and help.
I am still looking. The server in the reference would be the sever that hosts the website you want. I will check back here later when I know more.
Thanks - I think you are right. My only problem is that the problem occurs on manywebsites, and even on Market and other internet accessing apps. While this could still be right, I don't see why many more people wouldn't be having the same issue.
It also puzzles me that changing the modem from g to b decreased the error significantly, as does moving further away from the router when it is in g mode.
Very confusing.
Hi All,
Since I got my DEFY I have WiFi problems. This issue only exists when WiFI has WPA/WPA2 PSK authorisation.
It is going like this: I connect over the wifi. Then connection works fine, I am able to browse www, check the emails etc, and after few seconds, minutes the connection stops working but still exist. I try to reconnect several times. Defy shows that is connected but nothing works fine. Internet apps or Market gives a message like the time is up, connection lost. I have to forget the conection in settings or reset device to get it working properly, but not for long.
And the thing is that there is only ONE ROM that works fine with WiFi on my DEFY. This is Cyanogenmod-7.1.0-RC1. Other ROMs have same issues. Doesn't mater if it is Cyanogen mod 7.1 stable or any MIUI or MS2Ginger. I tried almost all roms but nothing helped. So I had to go back to CM7.1.0-RC1.
Do you know what should I do to make WiFi working fine on other roms?
greetings,
Gregory
p.s.
Please, just don't tell me that I should change authorisation on WiFi router. This is not a solution for me, because I use WiFi in a lot different places.
Same problem
Hi,
I have the same problem with my Defy since a few months, no solutions!
I have the *EXACT* same issue. Was about to roll back to stock and send it in for repair, glad I found your post! I'll install the ROM you suggested and keep hoping this gets fixed

I think that's a different problem than we're having. It is finding the network just fine (and connecting) in our case. It's just that internet connectivity refuses to work after a few minutes, forcing us to disconnect-reconnect to get it working again

maybe changing the regulatory domain channels from 11 to 14 could help. this option is hidden by default, you have to enable it: change the value of 'ro.debuggable' from 0 to 1 in /system/bootmenu/config/default.prop, save and reboot. after that, the regulatory domain setting will be shown in settings/wireless/wifi/advanced. simply change it to 14 channels.

maybe changing the regulatory domain channels from 11 to 14 could help. this option is hidden by default, you have to enable it: change the value of 'ro.debuggable' from 0 to 1 in /system/bootmenu/config/default.prop, save and reboot. after that, the regulatory domain setting will be shown in settings/wireless/wifi/advanced. simply change it to 14 channels.

Thank you for the suggestion! Just tried this, didn't resolve the issue sadly
I'm looking into rolling back to a stock Froyo rom but the information is scattered all over the place, I'm having a hard time figuring out if it's possible, and if so, how ;/
Anyone have any more ideas? ;/

OK, maybe I just passed the signpost but... do you still have the problem if you set your "select network" setting to 3G only?
I ask because (and it may be different on my phone as I am USA, stock ROM with wifi calling) if you go into the INFO menu > phone information > set preferred network type, mine toggles between three radio preferences: "GSM only" (when wifi is active), "GSM auto (prl)" and -- if I set for 3G Only, "WCDMA only".
I have noticed that when "select network" setting is at automatic (or 2G only) it often has trouble transitioning from cell to wifi. And, when wifi is an issue, I find that "GSM auto (prl)" has been selected (which on my USA phone prevents wifi connection). However, it seems to have no issue whatsoever transitioning from "WCDMA only" (3G only) to "GSM only", which on my phone then allows wifi connection. Again, this is a wifi calling phone so may be different.
Yep, same here BUT ! I get root browser, found my build.prop and change wifi chanells first time for 14 and it didnt help so i try other and my wifi works in 100% with 13 chanells. Try it
This is a widely know problem, many people are affected more or less. I'm also having nerve-blowing times with wifi sucking all over... Stock Froyo (and now Cyanogen 7.2) seems to be a bit more stable, sometimes everything is fine for a few hours, all downloads go lightning fast - and then suddenly things are screwed up. I tried a lot of MIUI releases as I like it most. MIUI seemed the most problematic so far. I don't know what is the cause, new stock Motorola Gingerbread ROM versions also have this issue (except one I think - look it up in the forum).
Agree, bothering with the router is not a solution. My Nokia E51, my EeePC, my girlfriend's Omnia and Lifebook - all work perfectly with all the four routers we use frequently. Not a single glitch - everything is stable and nice, except Defy.
I don't think is a hardware problem with certain devices, it seems more to do with the way Defy handles wireless connections.
Anyway, it's frustrating but CM7.2 and CEE Froyo gives a bit better experience than others.

No, problem still persists. Sometimes it works flawlessly for hours. Then... suddenly screwed :S In some cases a "switch wifi on/off" workout can help but not always.

Same. Thanks for your response.
I've rolled back to 2.2 and no Wifi issues so far. I'll just stay on this stock ROM.

Which Froyo version do you use? A few times this wifi-bug occured also under Froyo. I'm thinking about going back myself, as Froyo is the only acceptable release to record hiccups-free videos
