Thinking of getting a 3.5 external drive and filling it full of films.
When it comes to playing them, plugging the external into the transformer via USB then running the HDMI into TV
Anyone else tried this yet, or will i only be able to view films on the transformer screen

I have played films through hdmi connection to a TV. The only 'problem' was that you get the output on both the transformer screen and the TV screen, which can be a bit distracting.
I have also connected a usb drive OK.
I haven't connected a usb drive and played films over hdmi from it (because all my films are format that doesn't work on transformer), but see no reason why that wouldn't work, given that each component part of the activity works.

So you can have films on a hard drive in a format that's not readable by the transformer
What format is that then so i can try and avoid it

NTFS (I think), EXFat and mac formats aren't supported.
Use Fat32 with MP4 Videos
It won't play AC3 or DTS audio files natively. Some players have the codecs like Vplayer but they do not seem to have hardware acceleration for the video. I am still waiting for a player that plays 720p MKV files with AC3 or DTS properly. Right now the best way I found was to use VLC Direct to stream transcoded content from the PC and let the PC do the conversion on-the-fly.
Also I noticed that videos judder when audio is present but do not judder when no audio is decoded. The only thing I have seen smooth audio and video playback from is streaming videos through something like Megaviewer for some reason.
Also HDMI output does not work on Panasonic plasma TV's from 2010 onwards for some reason.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. The films were of various video codecs inside an avi wrapper. Transformer can't open avi files (actually, maybe it can now but it couldn't when I tried this).
It is formatted as ntfs.
If you're playing 1080p video via the HDMI out on the TF, the TF screen goes blank due to the resolution not being supported on the internal LCD. That may be helpful if you feel that having both screens on is a bit distracting. Hopefully at some point Asus or a third party dev will figure out a way to manually turn off the TF display while connected to HDMI.

It's the Windows Mobile forums . I still release Themes for Spb Mobile Shell on there but I have moved over to Android now as Windows Mobile is dead.
Yes I finally got a TF a few weeks ago as my laptop died on me and this (with the docking keyboard) was perfect for my needs. Totally loving it too

I have a 56" Samsung DLP HDTV HL56A650.
I know the TV has wiselink but I am pretty sure not wiselink+.
I have hooked my phone into the wiselink usb slot and successfully viewed pictures and music that is stored on the phone. As far as I can tell right now, it will not play .mkv videos, but does support x264.
I also can't seem to find out how to hook my TV up to the Ethernet which leads me to believe I don't have the + with my wiselink.
Anyone else have a Samsung TV that they can do this on?
Maybe wrong forum? This is not a TV help forum.
Yeah, wiselink has nothing to do with the phone... it just uses the SD card as mass storage.
Wireless DLNA is what the SGS is all about..
i believe Kies has video convertor for the .mkv files
I have a Samsung LN46A950. I have it plugged into my network via ethernet, and when I start the DLNA server on my Vibrant it shows up as a server on my TV. I'm able to view pictures and the Avatar trailer this way, but I can't play video. Apparently my TV doesn't support the correct CODEC to play Vibrant's video files.
It's a non-issue for me since I have an HTPC connected to my home theater that can obviously handle any format. I still kinda wish my TV could play the files, though, just because it'd be cool.
Thanks dex. Thats the kinda resoonse I was lookin for. I dont particularly need help with my tv, was just interested in seeing if anyone else has had success with playing videos from their vibrant to their samsung tv.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
like the Vibrant?
Thanks,
ive used screen share through dlna it uses wifi and a dlna compliant tv. works great.
It doesn't do video out through the headphone jack like the Vibrant does. You can buy a micro USB-video out but I haven't tried it. Saw it here:

TV Out
I tried to find out if our myTouch 4G could do TV out and have gotten nowhere. I'm tempted to try out the link and order the device as I don't have a DLNA television yet.
I read on a different thread that it doesn't have the hardware to do video out. I believe this because there's no setting for it like on the Raphel.
DLNA (UPNP) is clearly "the future". But much like bluetooth it will probably be several years before it is commonplace. I bet you get 3 new phones before you get a new TV.
FWIW, I did try the DLNA to a PS3 and it does work very well.
I just hooked it up with the USB cable to a BlueRay player that has a USB input. With some fiddling around, it brought up the pictures but not the video. That might be due to the format of the video. I will try converting one to another format and see if it works for video also.
The BlueRay player is 2009 vintage, so newer ones might handle the 3gp format.
Please post questions in the Q&A section.

Please keep us updated if that cable works. I myself would like to know if this works.
PS3
I use my PS3 to watch movies from my phone
I have an Acer Iconia A500 tablet and want to use it to keep my daughter busy on road trips and such... I want to plug a small DVD player in via the HDMI cable and have the aduio/video come out onto the tablet but I dont know where to start with this... Any help??
I'm pretty sure the HDMI port on the tablet only works as an HDMI out. You'd be better off downloading the movies and put them in the tablet's memory or getting Netflix and use wifi tethering on your phone for data.
If you know a bit about custom kernels/modules you could also try adding ISO support (via USB)... I'm pretty sure there are some players around that handle MPEG2PS (but probably not CSS). Best option: run your DVDs through handbrake and be done with it (see also this thread).
After a few weeks of extensive Mojo use, just figured I'd throw in a few tips/tricks:
1. Do not unplug the controller bluetooth dongle from the USB 3.0 slot. It sucks (for now) but anywhere else and you will experience some serious lag. It was a bummer as I am using a 7-port USB 3.0 hub with it...and I have to have that hub plugged into the USB 2.0 port. Yes, I tried plugging the dongle into the hub while it was plugged into the USB 3.0 port. It still lags. That dongle needs to be alone in the USB 3.0 port for reliable controller use. Hopefully KitKat resolves this. I would really like to use my 2.0TB USB 3.0 HD to it's full potential!
2. I updated the console first, and then applied the root. Everything worked fine, except I still could not see things in the Play Store. Apparently the Play Store updated before I rooted the machine. I had to go into Settings->Apps and uninstall the current Play Store and revert back to the shipping Play Store. Then I could see everything. Just a heads up if this happens to anyone.
3. There are issues reading exFAT and writing NTFS with android. There are work arounds as well, but do you need them? I have a 2TB drive with just a whole lot of "stuff", and nothing I have ever exceeds the FAT32 4GB filesize limitation. You may be different, but if not it is really easy to format a very large HD (up to 2TB as far as I am aware) to FAT32 and have read/write access right off the bat. I used this to format a 2.0TB Seagate USB 3.0 drive:
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm
Works great.
4. Everything I use with this device has its own power. The seven port USB 3.0 dongle (Pluggable Peripherals) has its own power supply as well as the Seagate drive. I find everything solidly reliable when they are not sucking anything out of the Mojo.
5. Every device needs a reboot sometimes...Android devices as well. I do not necessarily like the "always on" idea, but that is how it was manufactured so what can you do. You can reach behind it and yank the power plug to reboot (bad idea...it'll wear out!) or you can use Quick Boot (search the Play Store) which works perfectly for rebooting the console.
If i remember more I will post them. The Mojo is a darn fine device with a lot of potential (and power) and I have been really driving it lately. I have not experienced any slow down even with the most demanding games and emulators.

So you are not looking at FullHD MKV movies with DTS or higher, because 4GB max is very small.
If you want to see FullHD MKV movies 10+ Mbps with DTS or higher then 10GB or more is a must, it's really a pity you can't see and hear the beauty
of Full HD movies with DTS and a bitrate of 10+ Mbps or more.
A movie buff won't go for 4GB or lower.

I didn't really get into this console for HD MKV movie rips. I did it for the complete collections of roms and isos (game systems) and as a music player basically. I am personally interested in emulation performance, and the Tegra 4 in this excels at it. PSX and N64 play flawlessly, even with various filters enabled. I was extremely impressed with the emulation performance across the board. I'll play actual Blurays (or even my HDDVD's...remember those?) for my HD movie fix.
Thanks for the Quick Boot recommendation. That is a handy one to have.

No problem, yep it is quite handy. I have also been using "Clean Master" which does a great job clearing out cache and such. Just be careful with the "advanced mode" on this, which can delete things you wouldn't want it to Otherwise, the standard mode is keeping my Mojo nice and clean
Has anyone ever managed to get an external dvd drive working on an Android Yoga Book? I would have thought hooking it up with an OTG connector and a Y cable also going into a power bank to give the drive some juice would work. Would be great to hear if anyone has got it to work.

I was try. DVD drive was recognized but cd accelerated and stops, accelerated and stops... I think energy is too low...
Android Verizon works (With Drawbacks) Windows Verizon should work with a powered hub

Yes, for the android version most portable DVD drives that have AV mode will work.
however, there are some serious drawbacks.
1. you need a powered OTG hub as every drive I've tried, even the low powered portable ones need too much power, it often looks like its working but will have issues spinning or turn off randomly. there may be lower powered ones now but I havent found one with low enough draw not to need a powered hub.
2. its not great for movies. it only works with DVDs that are not encrypted (a lot of low budget or independent DVDs are unencrypted) or data discs with your own video files on them. (if you try to play an encrypted video it will either error out or will play the video but it will look scrambled and will blank out a lot.)
3. even if you do find an unencrypted DVD its not really straightforward to play. without a proper DVD software for android you need an app that at least will play the DVD files (MX player worked for me, I suspect VLC would work as well) the DVD basically opens like a data disk with a bunch of oddly named files, you just have to dig through and find the largest file and that's usually the main video.
as far as I can find there do not seem to be any video players for android that can decrypt a DVD (regular DVD players have built in decryption and PCs use software so its not something you generally think about until it doesn't work)
all this being said, for anyone with the windows version ignore everything above and you will probably be ok with a powered USB hub and some DVD software.
**Edit, I cant change the title now but I typed Verizon instead of Version by mistake. Sorry about that***
