Has anyone ever managed to get an external dvd drive working on an Android Yoga Book? I would have thought hooking it up with an OTG connector and a Y cable also going into a power bank to give the drive some juice would work. Would be great to hear if anyone has got it to work.

I was try. DVD drive was recognized but cd accelerated and stops, accelerated and stops... I think energy is too low...
Android Verizon works (With Drawbacks) Windows Verizon should work with a powered hub

Yes, for the android version most portable DVD drives that have AV mode will work.
however, there are some serious drawbacks.
1. you need a powered OTG hub as every drive I've tried, even the low powered portable ones need too much power, it often looks like its working but will have issues spinning or turn off randomly. there may be lower powered ones now but I havent found one with low enough draw not to need a powered hub.
2. its not great for movies. it only works with DVDs that are not encrypted (a lot of low budget or independent DVDs are unencrypted) or data discs with your own video files on them. (if you try to play an encrypted video it will either error out or will play the video but it will look scrambled and will blank out a lot.)
3. even if you do find an unencrypted DVD its not really straightforward to play. without a proper DVD software for android you need an app that at least will play the DVD files (MX player worked for me, I suspect VLC would work as well) the DVD basically opens like a data disk with a bunch of oddly named files, you just have to dig through and find the largest file and that's usually the main video.
as far as I can find there do not seem to be any video players for android that can decrypt a DVD (regular DVD players have built in decryption and PCs use software so its not something you generally think about until it doesn't work)
all this being said, for anyone with the windows version ignore everything above and you will probably be ok with a powered USB hub and some DVD software.
**Edit, I cant change the title now but I typed Verizon instead of Version by mistake. Sorry about that***

I just tried something that seems like it should be simple, but I've had no luck with it whatsoever. I plugged a USB-DVD drive into the transformer dock, and hoped to find the ability to play an actual physical DVD. I don't see anything in the default software that appears to support this, nor do (apparently) any of the media players that I've installed.
I searched the market for "DVD", and found lots of software for converting DVDs to MK4 and various other formats, but nothing that appears to play a DVD directly.
Is there a way to play DVDs via an attached drive on the transformer?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Youd need drivers to support an external optical drive and an application that would be able to read that format. Currently there isnt anything because, until recently, there wasnt anything on android that had a true USB host.
I wouldnt expect it to happen any time soon either. I dont see the demand being very high as there are only two tablets with a full USB and nothing with a built in drive.
Bummer. I think you're right, though - it looks like I'm a bit ahead of things with this attempt. It should be possible, maybe even easy, to run a USB DVD drive on Android, but it will require an application that knows how to talk to the USB interface. And since the USB Host interface was just introduced with Android v3.1, it isn't likely that these applications will exist at this point.

Is it possible to have videos played directly (in Divx or any other compatible format) from a USB thumb drive connected to the GT10.1 via the addon USB accessory?
Thanks

thumbs up for this question! Would like to know this, too!
The answer to your question is no... not directly. The only way to do it is to connect your tab to a computer, copy the file over, disconnect the tab, and play it from the local hard drive on the tab.
When I copied movies over, it took an .mp4 file and converted it to wmv on the tab.
I also noticed that when your tab is plugged into the computer, you can't do anything on the tab. If you do, it disconnects the tab from the computer.
Hope this helps.
After doing a bit more research, here's an update:
It looks like Samsung makes a usb adapter. I can't post links, but google "Galaxy Tab Adapter (USB)"
Yes, once the USB adapter is available you will be able to use thumb drives, portable hard drives, etc, to play movies, music...
Will you be able to transfer files back to the Thumb Drive once the USB adapter is available? Or will it only be able to download?
I assume we have no idea when Samsung will make said adapter available.

It is (said to be ) usb host. I have used usb host before. literally it is 100% a usb drive. you can upload, download, read, edit, play, delete, any file that is attached to it.
And you can connect a mouse or keyboard too. Just think of it as a usb slot. If the adaptor is legitimate usb host then it should perform every of the above.
I'm also waiting too.
a usb drive should function the same way it does on your computer. you will be able to play files that are on it, copy files from it and load files onto it. it will act just like sd cards do now in android.
the adapter is available for order now, but I believe it's listed as "back order"
Has anyone else noticed that due to the design of the tab, if you have a usb drive plugged in and are using headphones, you won't be able to prop it up? They're on opposite sides, so one plug would always be blocked!
I decided this wasn't the biggest deal for me, but it's definitely an annoying design decision.
Hey guys, I'm sorry to bring this back up again almost 4 months later, but has anyone tried to use an external cd/dvd drive with the usb adapter? I'm wondering I could play a movie from the external cd/dvd drive and have it play on the tabet. Thanks.

I haven't done it, but I think you would need an external power source to power the dvd drive. The USB does not supply enough power for that. Also, I think the USB hub for the Tab can only read FAT32 formatted drives, so I don't think it has the software to read directly from DVD, but I don't know.
Just play the from the USB device. How can this be a portable device if it has everything dangling from it...For that get a thin notebook.
It depends... USB can only provide about 500mA of current tops but with that tablet it probably even less, so your HDD would need external power supply.
Also, out of box, Galaxy Tab support only FAT32 as file system. So, you would need drivers/modules to support anything else.
I am using pershoot kernel with NTFS module, so I tested 16Gbyte jump drive formatted with NTFS. I was being able to mount it and read from it no problem. So, I see no problem to mount and read from HDD (granted you have to have external power supply for it).
If you are talking about CD/DVD drive then you would need driver/module for that and I did not see it available.
After a few weeks of extensive Mojo use, just figured I'd throw in a few tips/tricks:
1. Do not unplug the controller bluetooth dongle from the USB 3.0 slot. It sucks (for now) but anywhere else and you will experience some serious lag. It was a bummer as I am using a 7-port USB 3.0 hub with it...and I have to have that hub plugged into the USB 2.0 port. Yes, I tried plugging the dongle into the hub while it was plugged into the USB 3.0 port. It still lags. That dongle needs to be alone in the USB 3.0 port for reliable controller use. Hopefully KitKat resolves this. I would really like to use my 2.0TB USB 3.0 HD to it's full potential!
2. I updated the console first, and then applied the root. Everything worked fine, except I still could not see things in the Play Store. Apparently the Play Store updated before I rooted the machine. I had to go into Settings->Apps and uninstall the current Play Store and revert back to the shipping Play Store. Then I could see everything. Just a heads up if this happens to anyone.
3. There are issues reading exFAT and writing NTFS with android. There are work arounds as well, but do you need them? I have a 2TB drive with just a whole lot of "stuff", and nothing I have ever exceeds the FAT32 4GB filesize limitation. You may be different, but if not it is really easy to format a very large HD (up to 2TB as far as I am aware) to FAT32 and have read/write access right off the bat. I used this to format a 2.0TB Seagate USB 3.0 drive:
http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm
Works great.
4. Everything I use with this device has its own power. The seven port USB 3.0 dongle (Pluggable Peripherals) has its own power supply as well as the Seagate drive. I find everything solidly reliable when they are not sucking anything out of the Mojo.
5. Every device needs a reboot sometimes...Android devices as well. I do not necessarily like the "always on" idea, but that is how it was manufactured so what can you do. You can reach behind it and yank the power plug to reboot (bad idea...it'll wear out!) or you can use Quick Boot (search the Play Store) which works perfectly for rebooting the console.
If i remember more I will post them. The Mojo is a darn fine device with a lot of potential (and power) and I have been really driving it lately. I have not experienced any slow down even with the most demanding games and emulators.

So you are not looking at FullHD MKV movies with DTS or higher, because 4GB max is very small.
If you want to see FullHD MKV movies 10+ Mbps with DTS or higher then 10GB or more is a must, it's really a pity you can't see and hear the beauty
of Full HD movies with DTS and a bitrate of 10+ Mbps or more.
A movie buff won't go for 4GB or lower.

I didn't really get into this console for HD MKV movie rips. I did it for the complete collections of roms and isos (game systems) and as a music player basically. I am personally interested in emulation performance, and the Tegra 4 in this excels at it. PSX and N64 play flawlessly, even with various filters enabled. I was extremely impressed with the emulation performance across the board. I'll play actual Blurays (or even my HDDVD's...remember those?) for my HD movie fix.
Thanks for the Quick Boot recommendation. That is a handy one to have.

No problem, yep it is quite handy. I have also been using "Clean Master" which does a great job clearing out cache and such. Just be careful with the "advanced mode" on this, which can delete things you wouldn't want it to Otherwise, the standard mode is keeping my Mojo nice and clean
I have seen elsewhere on the net that the Samsung SE-218BB external USB DVD drive has android compatibility, as well as the newer model SE-218CB. I'm wondering if it will also be compatible with the Fire TV as it is android based.
I just got my FTV and have ClockWork Mod custom recovery 6.0.5.1.4a and latest rooted custom ROM (51.1.4.0_514006420 updated) on it. The general plan was to use this to completely replace my current HTPC setup. If I were able to play DVD's using XBMC that would be perfect. Has anyone tried this? Does the android port of XBMC still have the DVD support in it even, or has it been removed?
It's not a huge loss if it does not work, but it would be nice to have it do everything instead of still needing a traditional DVD player.
They are available at a local retailer for only 29.99, so I may just pick one up and try it out. If it doesn't work, I can just return it I guess. I will report my findings later.

My guess is that if you plug it into the AFTV, and mount it, you should have no problem accessing it. As for XMBC playing them, i don't see why not as long as the DVD gets mounted. Too bad you didn't ask a week ago, I had an LG drive just like that here, I could of tried it out.
Any updates on that? I am additionally interested in playing media from an external blueray player ...
Thanks,
Jens

I have similar need as well. I own a generic USB DVD player. It would be great if I can plug it into Fire TV to play CD or DVD.
External DVD Drive possibility
Code:
Any luck connecting an external DVD or BluRay drive to Amazon FireTv?
Instead of new comers squandering around looking for solutions to set up the nexus player for gaming and media streaming. Lets simplify things a bit to see what accessories to get and what software to use to get our nexus player to its maximum capability.
Lollirock 1.5 rom (OTG micro usb cable and a usb mouse or keyboard are required during first bootup. It will not detect nexus remote during first bootup)
Stick mount pro(Play Store) Make sure it's the pro version or else it won't work!-
- A must have for external storage. This app enables storage drives to mount into a specific location using symbolic link option which isn't included in the free version. By default, it will mount storage devices under sdcard/usb folder instead of usb:// mount location (apps like emulators or xbmc that uses file explore do not search to this location usb://)
- I have tested it on xbmc, my boy, fpse, and ppsspp.
Known issue: external storage formatted under ntfs will not mount properly. Files will not show up under mount folder.
I'm currently using exFAT format and it seem to work fine so far.
For those who uses stock Nexus Player rom, you have to download stick mount pro from a third party site since the license won't transfer(I'm assuming that you paid for it)
Sixaxis controller(Play Store)
- Can pair up to 2 controllers for two players games. There's also a setting to set dual shock 3 or 4 to run as native android controller, so you don't have to deal with mapping everything manually.
My suggestion
Accessories : Rii 8 wireless touchpad keyboard(Amazon) mini keypad with track pad and qwerty keyboard.
Logitech keyboard k700
Ps4 controller
Inateck card reading+Hub(Amazon) -
- It very important to choose the right otg micro usb cable because it can effect read/write speed for external storage drives, including low power consumption drives such as usb flash drives and sd cards. This hub can run with or without a secondary power source.
I thought something like a flash drive with a low power consumption didn't require a decent otg cable, but it does. I was testing a psp rom off my usb storage with a much simpler micro usb otg cable and the frame rate wasn't that great also the loading time. Transfer files were also very slow. So keep that in mind, make sure to get a decent micro usb otg hub or card reader. At least get one that you can supply power to from an outlet.
For those who are looking to run Amazon prime video, download Kodi (xbmc) and Amazon prime video add-on zip.
-Amazon instant video app is crappy on android to begin with compare to IOS version which has a more user friendly UI similar to Netflix. Kodi improves that with cover arts and tv-friendly user interface.

Have you used sixaxis before? I'm just wondering., so I can help you figure out the issue.
I have but I think the problem is I didn't see a Bluetooth address when I set it up on the Nexus player maybe I have to fix the zoom setting in the overscan setting on my Nexus player to see it
