[Q] Gingerbread (EF02) Sensor Calibration - Epic 4G General

My G Sensor has always been screwy and used to be able to at least get it working moderately well in most applications other than Skymap. However the calibration is messed up again and the old method of using a terminal emulator to do
su
/system/bin/sensorcalibrutil_yamaha
isn't working as it is no longer there since I upgraded to the leaked Gingerbread (EF02) build. The config file that used to be located at /data/system/ms3c_yamaha.cfg also doesn't appear to be there anymore.
Any idea what happened to these and how to try to fix the sensors now? The sensor calibration from the settings menu doesn't fix the calibration for me at all.

Put the phone face down during calibration from the settings menu.

Or flash the ef02 plus kernel from the dev forum.... it accidently fixed my rotation lag

I've tried that but it doesn't fix anything. Only way I've fixed this in the past was to remove the .cfg file and run the calibration which created a new one with good values. All was good with that method until a firmware update but I was able to fix it again with the same method. However now with the Gingerbread update I can't use those methods anymore it seems.
Perhaps I'll try the EF02 Plus rom tomorrow but I'm at work with no ODIN ability right now. However this isn't really rotation lag, this is sensors are really off... every bubble level app I try won't level. Sensor readout always shows the up/down pitch between 150 to 175 degrees, never goes to 0 or anything outside those values no matter how I calibrate it.

No no no.... its a kernel named ef02 plus..... you can flash it right through clockworkmod....

Ahhh had just seen the rom when I looked earlier. Trying the kernal but no luck on any improvement with the sensor. Doh

I found that flashing the Alpha EE03 rEVOlution Remix Theme fixed my screen orientation lag... Plus it's an awesome theme, so far.
Works fine with EF02, the only thing that really doesn't work is the glass lock screen. Other than that, it's all good.

Strange "Froyo" Quirks... Already!

Installed the "official" update that was hosted on Google's servers, which worked like a charm... but...
The camera won't boot up? The phone doesn't seem to be running any faster thus far, even after moving all possible applications to the SD card. Also, the gallery shows no images.
When I hold down the camera button, or select the camera application, the phone vibrates once (to tell you the camera's booting up), the screen turns black, vibrates three times quickly, and flashes the force close screen instantaneously and returns to the home screen.
Hmmm....
I almost forgot to add: I still have the Touchwiz default issue, that is, the OS prompting me to set a default every so often when I hit the home button. I think I might have to wipe the phone.
I had similar problems so I wiped and did a clean install with Odin and now it works great!

weatherbug elite widget
i like the weatherbug elite app and widget, and for some reason the widget will not appear at all, since i updated.
I am in the process of backing up my stuff to do a factory reset to see if that solves the problem. I was waiting until this update was released before rooting. Is there an OCLF for this update?
i would suggest odining back to DI18 then odining http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209 see if this fixes your problems, i have 0 bugs with DK28.
After the factory reset, everything is working okay. I noticed that some of the prompts have strange translations, particularly when accessing the Firmware Updater under the Camera's setting menu: "It will occur additional fee. Will you continue?" The functionality is debatable at this point considering it runs into an error upon updating. Hm.
I will try Odin some other time when I have a few hours to brush up on flashing. I am not very familiar with hacking mobile phones in general, so I want to be better acquainted with the process before I dive into it. But a lag fix and bloatware delete are certainly in this phone's future!
Browser is really buggy for me. It takes up 70MB of RAM on start up and has the terrible checker boards effect.
GPS works perfectly for me on DK17 and 28.
However, it may be that I restored my data partition from a backup I made from DK17. I'll try running a factory reset and we'll see what happens.
I've noticed that when using on screen keyboard for a quick seach online, the on screen keyboard will not go away when pressing the back button sometimes. Anyone else?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I've still had some issues with the back button being unresponsive, perhaps to a lesser extent since Froyo, but I have gotten so used to it I can hardly acknowledge the problem based on recollection of testing the phone.
However, I noticed the Quadrant scores are very disappointing in both my own test and in user comments. I can't wait to root and lagfix this thing.
In addition, the physical keyboard still drops letters at random. It seems to have gotten worse since the update.

I did the exact same thing, but flashed my old DG27 to get my initial GPS fix in maps, then ODINed the new one.

You mean root and artificially increase your Quadrant scores for bragging rights? There is no lag fix on the epic. The only "lag fix" is a "game Quadrant scores" fix.

I got this crazy error when charged to full. I'll reset my battery in recovery and see if i get this crazy error again.

Anyone try the mediahub? It says an urgent update needs downloaded from the market before using it.... but when you click ok... it can't find the update in the market. Hmmm?
Also... .GPS is dead for me too.... even tried Odin'ing back to DI18 and then DK28.... but that method failed a miserable death.... still hoping for a newer release soon... this one is still BUGGY!

I've got the same error with MediaHub. Looking for a Froyo apk now.
GPS is working fine for me - I had a 100% stock 2.1 that I did update.zip to Froyo. I hadn't even installed any apps or even loaded up my Google account. Literally bought the phone, waited for provision, then updated to Froyo.
What version of Media Hub are you running? Mine is working fine.

Gps issue, won't face me in the right direction

I am running dk28 and haven't had any issues with gps that seem t be all over the forums. When I updated to the new google maps my gps isn't as accuruate as it was ( still pretty close but not as close) and basically when I turn left, it turns right, I go right, it goes left and its a bit annoying.
I uninstalled the update and it still was messed up. Tried re installing and still a no go. Anyone else had this problem? Or does anyone know what I can do to fix it, preferably without flashing back to 2.1 through odin and all that mess?

Have you tried to calibrate the magnetometer? Download Compass from Market and Menu > Calibrate?

I was recently having problems with the compass and Navigation going the wrong way. Intrerestingly enough I calibrated the accelromater and it fixed the issue. The phone no longer thinks South it North. I used the calibration method through the Connectbot below. In Froyo there is setting to calibrate it right through the GUI.

pay attention to the bump at bottom on back.

HELP!My Epic rotation is messed up and nothing fixes it

I had rotation lag on my Syndicate 1.1 rom,so i applied yamaha rotation lag.
Now my epic's rotation is messed up,when i open my settings, contacts(or any app that rotates) it turns to landscape mode!
I Odined and repartitioned 3 times, applied yamaha rotation fix few times, regular rotation calibration and reset NVRAM and nothing works.
Any suggestions? Is there a "hard rotation reset" or something like that?
My girlfriend threw the phone few times but that was about a month ago,and i just started having this problem yesterday so i doubt that has anything to do with it.
Edit:
And when i do "Horizontal calibration" the ball is not in the middle of the target like it should be but all the way at the bottom and it stays there even after calibration.
Im thinking about checking "Phone Bootloader Update" or "Flash Lock"(whatever that is) in Odin because nothing else seems to work.
Update:Fixed(hopefuly it lasts) it by Odining to DK28,mods can delete this.
Update2:Rotation lag is back,oh well i reather have lag than my rotation be messed up.
Go to syndicate frozen 1.2 and then try the yamaha thing
Out could be a bug our something

Yours is easy, backup and flash another rom that has the calibration then restore backup.
I know that Syndicate 1.1 got it and 99 percent of all roms do,or try to calibrate upside down-just put your phone upside down underneath a table and do regular calibration in settings menu.
If those two dont work let me know.
well i used to run syndicate 1.01 updated every time they did all the way to 1.2, every time ive had to re-calibrate with terminal. also i did try it with my phone upside down with the part i needed to click hanging of the edge of the table, still slow to rotate. any other ideas? thanks for all the help i really do appreciate it!

This what i did and beleave me this is the only way:
1 Odin to DK28 and check Nvram clear and repartition
2 Calibrate the phone in settings
3 Odin to DK28 like u did first time
4 Calibrate the phone using yamaha
5 Calibrate using settings upside down
6 Flash EC05 and calibrate using yamaha and settings
7 Flash your rom and do upside down method, but dont use yamaha because u might mess up your phone.
Yeah it seams that Odining to DK28 fixes alot of problems that EC05 and other odins cant fix, dont know why but dk28 fixed a few issues that was unfixebale otherwise like my boit samsung logo dissapering.
wow thats alot for just a few seconds of rotation time. haha so what i di is just turn of auto rotate and i just slide the keyboard out when i want it sideway. i was hoping for something simple in the terminal. thanks for your help though man. maybe when they actually release gengerbread we will find a way for it to work

[Q] Gingerbread Horizontal Calibration

So I used to run /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha as root to get a more precise horizontal calibration (the option in setting seemed to do nothing). However after upgrading to GB it seems like this executable has been removed and the option is settings still didn't seem to solve my issue. Is there another alternative on a stock GB rom? Maybe they renamed the app?
Download GPS Status from the Market. When you open the app, go to settings. There is an option to calibrate compass. Worked great from mine. Mine is spot on now.
Is there really no longer a built-in calibration app in system settings? Mine worked fine although the phone had to be upside-down like many other people's while using it.

No the built-in Settings -> Display -> Horizontal Calibration still exists. My statement was that it never really worked for me and still doesn't. The only reliable way I had to calibrate was by running the aforementioned yamaha application while running as root.
I've tried the upside down trick and I still get jitters. For instance Words with Friends randomly shakes the tiles, even if my phone is sitting on a table. It's not so bad w/ GB as it was when I got the phone originally but I was able to solve it under Froyo with the yamaha tool and don't seem to have that option in GB :-(

Yeah, I used to use /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha as well, and it worked very well for increasing the speed/sensitivity of rotation, but seems to be gone in CM7 (Which is built upon AOSP GB 2.3.5). I brought it up in another topic & one of the devs (I forget who) said that there is no known fix right now.
I'll try offtohavasu's tip, but I'm not gonna hold my breath! I've used it before with no success, but I haven't tried it with CM7 yet. Cross your fingers that this is the fix we need!
EDIT: no luck. I tried both the "Compass calibration" (which I didn't expect would do anything for rotation speed/sensitivity, but I tried anyway) and "Calibrate Pitch and Roll," and neither one had any impact.
not working for me either.
My rotation lag is terrible as well, and the upside down / display calibration option has not fixed it. I thought it was just me as this popped up on the last two GB leaks for me. I would love to be able to rotate my phone properly again.
Hate to tease but if I had a computer I could probably whip up a possible fix if I had my computer:/
Sent from my Samsung Legen-wait for it-dary! 4g
This certainly seems to be somewhat hardware related (as in, variations in production quality). I had issues back on Eclair or one of the first froyo leaks, including the bacwards compass that initially lead me to the upside-down calibration discovery, but my rotation speed has been fine since sometime around the release of EC05.
But how long of a delay do we each define as lag? When I had issues, I actually had to shake the phone to get the rotation to register... now, it still hesitates for about a second, but I see that at as a check to make sure it was an actual rotation instead of an incidental, momentary tilt of the phone - I would be annoyed if my screen rotated every time the motion sensor detected the slightest movement
Edit: a full second is an exaggeration, I'm seeing more like half a second of hesitation... Just trying to remain accurate
2nd edit - damn swypos, lol

I tried over 20 ROMs in 2 weeks to solve a Serious Problem with Screen

I have a serious problem.
I have HTC Evo 4G, My screen is getting dim (NOT BLANK), I cant see screen in bright sun, It's really dark.
But this happen only Sense based ROMs, but this doesn't happen with Cyanogen or MIUI.
I have tried many sense-based ROMS ( Infected, Runny, MikG, ICS,...etc).
With every Rom, I flashed it many times, sometimes with wipe everything. I though it's hardware problem why this doesn't happen with ASOP ROM. (I don't like Cyanogen, or MIUI... LOL), Also, I tried every setting related to brightness But the problem still.
I've read every thread, article about similar problem, but useless.
For additional info about my problem: after starting up my phone, Every thing is OK, but after screen off for first time the screen getting so dark.
(Only one workaround I found, Just set "Screen always on") I'm going to kill my Evo.
Please Help me, I'm getting Crazy.
Okay this may be a dumb question, but are you sure that you don't have it set for "automatic" brightness?

Yes I'm sure the automatic brightness is off.
and the brightness is so high.
What kernel are you using with the sense ROMs? Have you restored any apps after flashing the ROMs? Sounds like either an incompatible kernel, or a restored app limiting brightness to save battery, although it could be hardware related(LCD or a sensor) but since you said AOSP works fine it sounds like a software issue over a hardware issue.

thank you. I'll try that kernal, I'll inform you the progress.
I'm not sure it will help but your downloads may have had a bad kernel or been slightly corrupt so flashing a fresh kernel may help out but it may not more than likely it wont but its the simplest fix you can try make sure to check the md5 sum on the download to verify your download is intact if you do it from your phone es fileexplorer has and option when you longpress the zip and select properties to calculate the md5 and then save it to a txt file, the txt will save in the same location as the zip

Have you possibly tried installing a stock rom for the phone? see if the problem still persists once you are on a stock rooted rom...at that point you can see if it is your brightness sensor/hw issue or user/rom error.
I've heard of this before. Im gonna say its a hardware issue.
Just for curiosity's sake, what happens when you adjust the screen brightness slider? Does it get even dimmer if you slide it to a lower setting, or is the dimness consistent regardless of where you have the brightness slider?

The dimness consistent, I mean it seem that brightness doesn't effect, and there is no change whether brightness 0% or 100%.
With a stock RUU, and still having brightness issues.. time to replace the cell. I have had this problem only one where screen filter app somehow got re-installed and enabled but other than that..replace your unit.
The only thing is it works on aosp but not sense if it was hardware failure it wouldn't work regardless
You mentioned that you SOMETIMES wipe everything when flashing new ROMS. I would definitely wipe everything clean every time when flashing a ROM to positively rule out that you don't have any left over garbage from a previous ROM. Just my two cents.
I'd say try wiping everything including your SD card do a fresh format and repartition the SD.
X2 on the wipe everything. Do NOT install any kernels when u flash the ROM. See if it works first, if it does then do a FULL nandroid, then flash a kernel.
