MyYoutube app was running fine playing hd videos. Today however, it won't run them as it just keeps trying to buffer, even aftermore than three minutes. Normal videos are ok though. My brother gave me a Buffalo router with wireless n. I had previously had a Belkin wireless g router. Web browsing is now noticeably faster but this Youtube problem arised. Are there any settings I need to adjust? My laptop and girlfriend's ipad seem to work fine.
I don't think it is your router. I as well as others have the same issue. I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus transformer and have the same problem on both devices. I have also tried playing the same video on my desktop and it play just fine. So my conclusion is that it is the new youtube app. I actually don't care for the new 3d look that Google decided to give us. I prefer performance any day over eye candy. I am not sure if anyone else noticed but all videos uploaded by machinima causes youtube to FC, but the same video play just fine on my desktop. I think the new youtube app really suck. I have reported this issue to Google, but it probably will not get fixed until they release ICS.
Rebooting my router seems to help the problem for a little while.

I just got a thrve the other day, and i also have direct tvs nfl sunday ticket. I dowmloaded the app and logged in. I was tethering wirelessly with my htc sensation. the stream quality was horrible and very choppy. I thought i could hard wire it to my phone thinking it would increase signal strength.it did not, and The thrive didnt recognize it. then i got home and used my wifi and same result choppy lagy video. os there an app or update that im missing that will fix it?
Hey guys,
My Nexus4 is currently getting shipped to me and one of the main features I was planning to use is Miracast. According to many other members, there was a new update for the ptv300 that fixed the wireless display issue when connected to the N4. For the people that have a working set up, does full 1080p video stream perfectly (i.e. no lag) to the HDTV via Miracast? Also, is the sound routed to the tv too? Are there any delays in terms of the sound? I want to be able to watch youtube videos + netflix on my hdtv without any lag.
Thanks, and any help is appreciated.

The latest firmware is 2.2.2 (not official and just beta testing) and it is working with my Nexus 4. The video and audio can "mirror" to TV through PTV3000 box. I do not feel much lag and it is acceptable. Netgear will continue to develop the firmware and will release official firmware early in 2013.
Works great, if you have a good WiFi connection and not much interference. I used it at home it was smooth and acceptable. Not quite as fast as my fiances iPad on Apple tv, but defiantly a step in the right direction. However it was horrible when I tried it at work, the WiFi doesn't have much of a backbone and failed to preform at all if I tried to changed the devices orientation at home it was almost instant but at work it too 7-12 seconds for it to catch up and it was super grainy.
not having issues with any other app (hulu, netflix, etc) works just fine... youtube buffers every 15-20 seconds... Connected via ethernet (microusb to usb ethernet adapter)..
Anyone else having this issue?
I'm having the same issue. But on Wifi.
Doesn't happen all the time. I know I have more than more bandwidth available .
I have this exact issue and it is driving me nuts. Youtube plays fine over my separate Chromecast that is connected to the same TV. All other apps do not buffer. I am connected via WIFI.
I find this happens eventually with mine as well. A reboot fixes it...and it eventually comes back. Same with Vevo and a few other video apps.
I'm also seeing something like this, but with mine, the app doesn't seem like it's buffering. I don't get the spinning circle. The videos stop and start.

Leanback.
My workaround is to just use the chromecast support to watch YouTube videos.
I've also switched to the unleashed kernel to see if that solves the problem

Lean Back being used here as well. A reboot seems to clear it up for a while, but it comes back.
I have the same issue on wifi. It happens with the following apps, haystack tv, pluto tv, youtube and vevo. Netflix and plex work fine. I know its not a bandwidth issue. I'm using AC router and the youtube app on my tv works fine. I hope this is fixed as it is very frustrating.

Have you tried Sideload in the traditional YouTube app and using it instead?

I have not, but after posting, I tested casting via the respective apps and they work fine. Not buffering whatsoever.

Yeah, chromecasting works fine, but sometimes I don't want to cast, but want to just use the remote / built in interface.
Also, when I have guests over they just want to use the remote, but are plagued with constant buffering / pausing.
I'm having the same buffering/freezing problems. I've looked to see if there's a quality setting that can be changed to easily remedy the 1080 problems but can't find it, if there even is a setting for this.

Same problem here. It's super annoying. To the point that I'd just as soon watch it on my phone. My connection is only 3mbps. I don't want to watch things in high Def!
Same problem here. The lack of Google support on the nexus player is ridiculous. I mean come on, they own YouTube and it doesn't even work on a device they created. Its a joke.
Same issue too. Tried with both the Youtube (leanback) app and with casting.
Video starts to buffer at some point and I can't do anything to prevent that.
Has anyone got this figured out? Bandwidth isn't my constraint. I'm half tempted to contact Google and tell them I'm sending back their hockey puck and they can shove it up their ass.
Very frustrating .
Is there no website or link that people can report bugs on the player? I mean how long has it been out already and they are yet to resolve so many issues and also the lack of new apps is pretty surprising. I have a hard time to believe that there has only been 20 people/companies to release a app for the player.
And if there all those TV manufactures going to support NP, wouldn't you think they(Google) would be hauling a$# to get the OS stable and up and running?

Updated YouTube app yesterday... Still buffering.
This is insane. I love Android TV. I truly believe that the idea of it is perfect. Chromecast, games, control with a standard remote or smartphone. The execution is seriously lacking though. Why does it seem like Google cares so little about it's TV platforms? Getting Youtube to work as well on Android TV as it does on my phone or tablet does not seem like a significant task. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there is an underlying hardware issue with these devices (I know there are a lot of complaints on the Plex forums about HD videos freezing), but some communication would be nice. I have reached out to Google support and they were very responsive, but the overall response was "we are looking into it" and that was months ago. Not very encouraging . . .
Bought mine on the Prime deal recently at very good price and all seems ok except iplayer runs for about 8 mins then just stops and returns to shield home screen. I have tried unistalling update which is as far as you can go and then updating and makes no difference, I have even sideloaded the standard android app which just stops but not to home screen.
So far it seems to be just this app as I have Amazon video running with no problems as well as Kodi and spmc .
My Fire tv runs iplayer with no problems.
Anyone else in Uk have this problem or anyone any suggestions please.
how long has it been happening for? if it's only been for a day or so, I'd be inclined to suspect that the problem is with the iplayer service, rather than with the app, and it will sort itself out.
I tend to access iplayer through the kodi add-on rather than the app, but the times I have used the app it's worked fine. however, I have very occasionally encountered the same problem you're having over the years, going back to the iplayer add-on for xbmc on the original xbox. it seems to just be a thing that happens sometimes, possibly when lots of people are trying to use it at the same time.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, seems strange it works prefectly on Fire tv yet even the sideloaded unofficial just freezes at about the same running time ( I have uninstalled that version now as it is no better)
I will contact Nvidia direct as they only seem to reply to praise on twitter.
Anoying as everything else seems ok.
strange. have you tried going into settings>apps, scrolling along to the iplayer app, force closing it, clearing cache and data, then let it reinstall any updates that you removed?

yes tried all that and more thats why I posted to see if was just me that was having trouble.
well, I have encountered that problem, but it's only ever been temporary. have you tried the iplayer add-on for kodi/spmc? I think there's a version of it available in the basic kodi add-on repository.
also is it happening with both wired and wireless network connections, or only wireless?

yes I can use kodi/spmc but I would like the working app and as yours is ok it must be something on my system.
It may be wifi as I only use that but everything else runs fine and it seems to be approx 8 to 9 mins then crashes.
Again thanks for suggestions and I will update if I resolve the issue.
wifi seems the likely cause, if everything else is working well. I shall try it myself with my ethernet cable disconnected and see if I have the same problem.
it's possible that iplayer is buffering inconsistently because it's connected through wifi, and it's being too quick to decide that the stream has failed.
I think it's also defaulting to the highest bitrate stream. maybe try going into the iplayer settings and changing the video settings, so it's not trying to stream in full hd.
and just in general, I recommend having a wired connection whenever possible. the less wireless traffic in your house, the better everything works. ethernet cables for static devices, save your wifi for phones and tablets etc.
Contacted customer care and they went through the obvious which I double checked then they came back with....
"Thank you for the update with the requested details, further to isolate the issue if you have remote paired while accessing BBC iplayer then could you please first un-pair the remote and then run BBC iplayer for sometime and check."
To my surprise I unpaired remote and used standard game controller and...................... it works.
I have just asked them why this resolves the issue, I'll post when updated.
lol, fair enough

Did you get a response about why the remote issues resolves the problem?
I ask as my parents are using the iPlayer app which since the last update and are facing this issue. Are you saying that using TV remotes with CEC enabled is causing this issue?
They have had the issue on two different types of TV (Panasonic and Samsung).
Hi all, hope somebody can help as I'm going crazy with this issue. I bought my first nvidia shield 3 weeks ago after months of considering if I should buy one.
I've been having buffering problems from day one.
I've done a factory reset 3 times, I've watched every YouTube video about how to fix buffering I could find.
I've change the cache setting, tweeked player settings, streaming quality, all, suggestions from YouTube videos but nothing works.
I even upgraded my Internet soeed to fibre extra, shield is connect via ethernet and speed is around 68 down. (with vpn on).
I'm using ExpressVPN (location closest to me).
I've also paid for a real debrid subscription and links are showing on add ons.
I'm having buffering on kodi, bee tv, cinema HD, I have other apps but haven't used them yet but I would guess the problem would still persist.
Have newest version ok kodi leia, everything updated so don't know what to do.
Starting to regret buying the shield, I'd bought a MECOOL km9 and didn't have issues with buffering but I sent it back because I wanted a shield.
Now, wishing I had stuck with the km9
Any assistance would greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Have you tried anything local? As in, a movie on a USB plugged directly into the Shield?
Just trying to see if your stuttering is a hardware issue, of if your VPN is having problems.

Thanks for reply.
I don't have anything downloaded on any USB as I don't download movies, I just stream them.
I've been trying to watch hannibal (TV series) and managed one episode but had to pause it every 20 mins or so to let it buffer.
Then just to test something else, I'm trying to play The Mask, i clicked on the to pirate bay torrent option (real debrid) and after about 10 mins it downloaded bit movie hasn't started. It's now on the kodi list of movies with the mask highlighted and at the top right corner of screen, it keeps flashing something, like when kodi is looking for another source.
I don't have any problems watching YouTube videos, can't say about other stuff as Netflix, but just remember now that at the moment I have amazon prime (just for this month and never used it)
I'm going to use it to see if it works fine.
Thanks for any help.
Well, amazon Prime is working flawlessly. Playing John Wick 2 and picture is great and no buffering.
The shield is behaving fine, as in, it seems to be funny so don't know if it could be a hardware issue.
I've Google a lot and apparently, lots of people have problems with buffering on the Shield.
Just done a test (switched off vpn) and played something on kodi and the buffer/progress bar really progressed quickly and a lot more than before.
I guess it's the vpn then. I'm with ExpressVPN, going to do some research and perhaps try a different vpn.
Sounds like you are on the right path. I have 3 Shield TVs for playing local movies (collection of 1400 movies) via KODI as well as streaming HULU, Netflix, DirecTV now services. I can say I have not had issues with any of these that were related to the Shield.
I would encourage you to check your main Modem/router or gateway (whatever kind of hardware you have). I have internet service through AT&T and their gateway is a piece of crap (IMO), but I find that if I reboot it 1x/month, everything works fine.
Just out of curiosity, why do you feel the need for a VPN?

SOLVED: It was ExpressVPN. I'm using nord now and it's working great. Also saw some posts of people having same problems with ExpressVPN on the Shield. Spread the word.

I agree that Nord provides a very fast VPN. I had buffering issues and received this response:
"Please try switching the connection protocol between UDP and NordLynx. It can be changed in the NordVPN application settings.
"Within NordVPN application open the settings menu > VPN Protocol > OpenVPN (UDP) / NordLynx.
"Afterwards, please try connecting to these newest and closest US servers and check whether the buffering persists..."
Nord support provided (5) servers that met this criteria and while I still encounter buffering, this has helped a lot.
Mostly, VPN doesn't solve any problem when streaming online youtube video, even though you get higher 60mbps. Instead, you'd better try watching or streaming online youtube video with lower resolution, instead of 1080p or 4K 2160p. If you insist on 4K or even 8K, you'd better download ultra hd 4k video. Online streaming high-resolution video is usually accompanied with constant buffering or freezing.
