Maybe I'm just being a little paranoid, but I notice that the blue notification light on my xperia play isn't a solid color. It's a very fast (almost unnoticeable) flashing blue that just makes me worry the light is having some problems... although it's been working fine. The green light is solid, why would the blue flash?

No, bluetooth is not on.
From what I gather its a notification of msg or status update from a chat or facebook

well the blue light is on to tell me that it's a new text message... but my question is why does it flash, and not stay a solid blue? Does everyone else with a xperia play flash blue, or stay solid?
It flashes for me. The only time I know that the light shines solid blue is when it's in fastboot mode. It shines solid red when it has low battery, orange while it charges, and green when it's connected to the computer, both in Flash mode and normally.

Snap, do get the lights flashing as well.
Orange for text messages, green for email, purple for twitter etc. Never seen a flashing blue light as of yet though.

From my reading it seems Windows Phone 7 doesn't have any support for LED notifications. This adds to the already huge population of iPhone users that are used to not having it either. It really surprises me that these platforms choose to leave this feature out, because to me it's invaluable. I use it throughout the day to see if I need to turn my phone on after returning to my desk (at home or work), and not having it requires manual checks to see if I've missed anything. Why should I have to bother with that? So I'm curious if other Android users find it just as valuable, and if you're just as dumbfounded why these other platforms don't have it.
I love it, but hate how it always stays lit when charging on my nightstand.
Can't live without it for notifications. Wish it was multi colored like the Droid as well.

+1 here the wimax leds are pretty cool. Also we get the short end of the stick compared to the blackberry leds. They have stock 7 color leds.

I completely agree. The LEDs on Blackberrys are amazing. I cannot fathom why these other manufacturers don't put more effort into LED notifications.
Led notifications are great, I liked the wimax notifier but it force closed a lot on me so I uninstalled it.

Yeah, nothing's is as good as a BlackBerry but what the EVO has isn't bad, definitely better than nothing. It's just with two major consumer-oriented platforms leaving it out (inexplicably), I hope Android manufacturers don't eventually do away with it.
This is a feature I have always liked on all of my phones.

Yeah but that always freaks me out, thinking its going to burn my screen out. I know it probably won't, but I freak out.
Also why would one need an LED light on a tablet?

Why wouldn't you want useful things?
Out of curiosity, which tablets do have notification LEDs? I've tried searching but it's come up vague.
i've yet to see any tablet with an LED.
It's not needed as much on a tablet as on the phone with missed calls and texts.
NoLED should suffice just fine. And NoLED combats burn-in by having an option to move the notification around so it's never using the same pixel for long.
ive had noled on all s1 and s2 and s3 and i have never had any problems with it and now they have themes!!

I mean I wouldn't mind an LED light at all, but I see more of a use for it on a phone (unread text, missed call) than a tablet. I always have new emails so I don't know what it would really notify me of.

NoLED is really only for OLED screens, on an IPS it will run your battery bone dry in double time
Notification lights for things like Gmail, Facebook, Twitter
My HP Touchpad has an LED...
Idea, is it not possible to make a costum ROM with a function, "use screen as notification LED"?
I do not mind that there is no LED. I have a U20I thats runs so slow, that any replacement for android gaming is good for me .
My current tablet has capacitive keys and I use backlight notifications, so not having BLN will take a little getting used to.

NoLED has an option to not turn the screen on when the proximity sensor is "close", so you can just keep the tablet face down when it's not on the charger.

You don't need a custom ROM. NoLED will do what you want.
I'm on my second N4. The first I didn't have long...stolen... but I remember how non existent the LED notifications were and that the volume just wasn't high enough for in car voice navigation. The rest of the phone was fab so I figured I had a faulty LED light and accepted the poor sound volume. Alas I didn't refer to this website because if I had have done so, having read the same complaints in many postings, I'm not sure I would have re-ordered. On the basis my new N4 would at least have a working LED I re-ordered and you guessed it....the same issues are present. Yes, I can install Light Flow but that is still a fix for a problem that I should not have to fix. Secondly the LED is so poor anyway that it may as well not be on the phone. The wife's iPhone 5 LED is positively like an aircraft strobe light by comparison. The N4 sound also is still not loud enough. Many people overcoming these issues by installing apps is a sign that LG need to address them properly either via a software update or on the next phone. One last whinge....even with Light Flow, I still don't get notification of emails. These two issues for me, LED & low sound, really let down what otherwise is a first class phone. Now I'm wiser if I need to replace again, I'm afraid it won't be a N4.
The iPhone 5 or any iPhone for that matter does not have a led notification light.
It does have a option to use the camera's led flash as a notification light though. Which is what you are seeing. And its not the same thing.
You might want to check out the thread on LightFlow in the apps forum, the Feb for the app hangs out there. LightFlow works perfect for me, though I don't use it for email notifications.

Forgive me if this has already been found but the Moto X has a notification light. Everywhere I've read including critic reviews said the moto x only has its active notification system.
I stumbled upon this with my defective moto maker xt1053. Somehow it came with a corrupt system from factory that even rsd lite couldn't fix. Anyway, I have a replacement on the way but I've had no way to turn it off. This morning I was playing around with it and plugged it in via USB to my computer. Battery graphic popped up as it would anytime you plug in with the phone powered down. The phone then showed 0% and to my surprise, a bright green led light long-blinks through the speaker grill!
My question now is... Is there anyway to enable the light under normal circumstances? I love active notifications, but if my phone is face up, I'd like to know if I have a text, etc with out picking up the phone.

You don't have to pick up the phone to see active notifications. They will pulse (just like an led) until dismissed.

That's pretty awesome. I would love to be able to activate that. Nice find!
That's pretty sick if it's not a hoax. Looks like an alien phone ?
I just tried the framework changes from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43281267&postcount=8
It did not work.
I tried disabling/enabling "active display", but it didn't help.
I'm surprised this hasn't been found before and hacked to work as an ordinary led notification light.
Sent from my Moto X cell phone telephone...
If I didn't have a busted phone I would never have known. On android central someone else mentioned that the light will turn on when plugged in without enough battery to activate the led screen. Has anyone tried the notification light widget from Motorola? Supposedly that gets the moto g light to turn on. If that doesn't work then perhaps it is a kernel setting? I would love to play around to get this working but until my replacement arrives I'm stuck. The picture I took was dumb luck. I kept plugging it in until I could snap a picture fast enough with my nexus 5 to catch it. It looks really cool coming through that grill... Even if it is only green. Its more of a bar than just a single light but perhaps thats an effect of the metallic grill.

As far as i know, It's directly wired to the battery system and does not interact with the OS... So no apk or firmware mod is going to have access to control it.

I love active notifications, but would still like using this for some things. It looks pretty awesome when lit as far as your pic shows.
Hard to believe it isn't controlled by the OS.
Yes someone found this early on in the Motos realease. It was eventually concluded that it is not in any part of the system framework so any kind of software changes wouldn't be able to enable it. It is independently attached to the batteries circuit.

Seriously... What an opportunity wasted... Especially since they put it in such a neat spot. To place an LED there in that spot in such a clever way and then never have it do anything with the OS seems like such a waste.

anyone opened it up yet to see if there is an alt/ place to solder the light to? or am i just crazy....
EDIT: i've seen a few phones i've opened up have extra contact points for random little things but hey its entirely possible
You could do that but definitely not worth shorting out your $500 phone accidentally IMO
From the user manual:
Low Battery LED:
This LED lights up when you plug in your
charger and the smartphone’s battery level is too low to
power on the display. It means that your smartphone is
charging and will be ready to use shortly.

When I try change Notification LED Color, The primary color "Green" and "Blue" do not seem to work. But when I move the slider down, I get RED, Pink, Yellow and Cyan.
Using Elemental-X 1.02 Kernel and tried with Chroma, Noobuilds and PureNexus. Could anyone confirm this?
After checking with various LED Notification apps, I guess color codes needs to be updated for n6p.
I use Lightflow (stock, unrooted) and all the colours work fine.

Try the blue that's 2 below the orange in light flow. That one works fine for me, but the orange like you said shows as yellow.
Can confirm this problem too. I'm using Light Flow and the LED white color is not even truly 'white', which really bothers me. The lack of colors has made me change all Gmail, Messages and Missed calls to white (I use green for fully charged, blue for charging & red for low battery). Other than that, everything works fine in my opinion.
