Splashtop HD is on the market, says that it is optimized for tablets Anyone have any experience with it or know what the real difference is from regular splashtop?

Oh here it is....I already posted in the Xoom section where a dupe thread is. LOL!!!
Great program but changes the resolution of the host computer. QUITE annoying.
Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks for the info!
Compared to normal Splashtop, does it have any noticeable performance increases that you recognize?
you can change the resolution in the settings to match what your pc is already set to so it does not change the resolution on conection
The difference from Splashtop hd, and regular Splashtop, seems to be that in Splashtop hd, there is an option to have native resolution. The option are listed as 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 720, Best fit to this device, and Native of the computer. Compared to in regular Splashtop, which only has 800 x 600, and 1024 x 768. Also in Splashtop hd. In settings, there is a option to enable dual core.
I hope this helps.

looks like it might be worth it then, thanks for clarifying that the market page says nothing as to the difference between the regular and hd one.
Good deal, thanks!
Here's hoping the native res option gets added to the existing Splashtop version too...
Does the HD version allow for connecting via a Google account, as was recently enabled in the server component?
FYI, here's some links:

Do tell....because I have been in the settings for both my TF AND my iMac and no such setting exists.
There it is.....hidden NOT IN THE SETTINGS but in the "arrow" beside the computer name.
Two finger scrolling is awful though.
Does splash HD run on different wireles network?
Hey, I've just purchased my 32gb asus transformer 2 weeks ago and love it. I was interested in purchasing the new splash hd app from the android market and was wondering could i still connect to my computer from an outside network as i spend the majority of my day at college or in the library. I know you can do it on the splashtop iphone app through google account. Is the same feature available on the new splash hd android app??
this ability was recently added on the ios version of the app, but it's not available for android yet for god knows what reason. so much better than any other option but i can only use it locally.....kind of a bummer.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I went ahead and bought it. Would recommend it for other transformer users. The overall speed and performance is definitely better.
Seems faster then the regular splashtop while I am tethering from my phone to my laptop at home, then compared to using splashtop from off of my home network.

I bought it, tested and returned. The regular one fits my needs so far, tho the native res is nice.
Through some simple port forwarding you can do it outside the local network

Would you mind explaining how? I found a page on splashtop that explained it, but it did not work. Maybe I'm doing it incorectly, but if you've connected from an outside network with your transformer please share

Here is the homepage for the box
http://androidtvbox.us/
I originally ran across this on ebay and after a little bit of googling found the home page. I ordered one yesterday and hopefully will have it by Friday since it shipped from the Orlando area and I'm in Lauderdale. Anyways I emailed the company last night around 11pm and within 5 minutes I got a reply, then shot some emails back and forth a bit today. It seems like they are shooting for the mass market but so far have only appealed to the power users so based off feedback so far they have switched gears(that's basically a quote from the email I got today) Also I was hoping there would be a thread about one of these boxes but cannot seem to find one here which is a bit surprising. So I will be posting a review this weekend for you guys to take a look at. I figure it has to be better than this damn Revue box I have running x86 lol.
-----UPDATE-----
I had a chance to play with it a bit Froday evening. Upon first boot it prompted me to update it and everything seemed to go through without a hitch. But after it rebooted it, it prompted me again and then froze. I eventually pulled the plug, grabbed the image from the website and updated it with that and since then it's been rock solid.
Now to the good stuff. The remote it comes with does not have good range at all. My couch is maybe 8 feet away and I felt it to be very unresponsive but to be honest the remote is pointless once you just add a 2.4ghz mouse to the equation. I spent two hours messing aroudn with the damn remote until I remebered I could just use a wireless mouse. After that everything was much easier. I added both my gmail accounts with ease, browsed the store and downloaded my apps. I even installed the latest xbmc(neon) nightly from my SMB share. Video playback with the default player works perfect even over wireless, just lacks subtitle support. For now as long as its less then 720p xbmc can handle it just fine with sub support.
I will post more once I get a chance to play with it more, but for $88 this box blows my google tv away.
For anyone interested, it is $88

To everyone...as as Android user for several years now, and a fan of anything user friendly enough to make nice with my network, while allowing me to tinker and expand, thus far...this thing works! And it works well. First let me tell you what I have...its the G Box I, and it looks like the only differences between the Gbox II are the case size, and additional ports: Here are the specs:
Mali400 Quad Core 3D GPU
Rockchip Cortex A8 CPU
1GB RAM
4GB* Storage
USB Storage Extendable (Flash Drives/HDD)
SD Storage Extendable (Up to 32GB!)
802.11g Wifi
HDMI Out
Audio/Video Out
Y/Pb/Pr Out (G-Box II)
2x USB 2.0 Ports (G-Box I)
4x USB 2.0 Ports (G-Box II)
First of all, It is 4.1... it is Jelly Bean! They did create a custom interface overlay, but you still have access to all the apps, settings, etc...and full google play store access. They include a media center app that can easily see my home network and plays every codec Ive thrown at it. I have a couple of Archos tablets, so Im used to great videoplayers since thats what Archos hangs their hat on. MX player does a good job but their picture quality suffers. I'm using this right now on a 50" LG Plasma...and Im getting full 1080p output. I also have a the MK802 mini PC with the Allwinner 10 chip. The MK802 works fine but it had initial problems with wireless network connectivity. No issues here...it found my network right away and so far has been rock solid. Also, so far, this thing is fast. I believe the Rockchip processor it uses is running at 1.2ghz...so far its smooth. Transitions seem smooth and video streaming is excellent. I loaded the IMDB app and payed several HD trailers... no issues...no stuttering...no frame rate drops....smooth. Like I mentioned before...it recognized my DLNA and Upnp devices like a champ. I use Twonky, and every display in my house is connected to the server... it recognized all of my shares, no issues. These mini pc devices (Gbox. MK802) are replacing all of my stand alone streamers. I have a Sony SMP N100 or one display and a Sony Bluray player that also supports DLNA on the other. I run XBMC on my server ( which is the best!)...but these devices can do everything they can do (except my server) and more. Basically youre running an android tablet on your TV, with all the access and flexibility that comes with it. Browsing works great...and it DOES play flash! Unlike my Motorola RAZR! When it updated to ICS, I lost flash...! Now I have to use the Puffin browser on it to get flash. Dolphin HD is my preferred browser, and Ill have it on the Gbox soon...
Now I am NOT getting paid to write all of this, nor am I connected with the company. I'm your average android user who wants a device to work well, talk to my windows base network, and allow for good connectivity flexibility.(not a closed proprietary ecosystem like Apple!) Im not new to the game. Before XBMC, I used my Popcorn hour for everything, and before that experimented with Window Media Player PC's, integrating my Xbox and PS3. Hell...I still have my original modded Xbox, with the original Xbox media player ( where it all started) Ive had this thing for less than a week, and my MK802 for a little over that...but Ill tell you this...its working well...very well so far!
I can confirm flash worked for me using the default browser. Still playing around so a review will come later.

Yes...I installed Plex and played around with it a while. It worked. I didnt keep it because I already use Twonky and XBMC. Once XBMC for Android is ready for primetime I'll be good. It does what Plex does and much more.
Mine came in this morning. Been playing with it for a couple of hours now. The screen is OK, but not as good as my New iPad, but that is to be expected. I did have it crash on me after installing Netflix and signing into it. I do like the fact that it is already registered to your Amazon account out of the box. I only had to connect to WiFi. Turning off adds is done on amazon.com under manage Kindle, which I did. the interface is VERY sparse. I was able to grab cisco Anyconnect VPN, but haven't tested it yet with my MiFi (I'm already at work). The initial setup and download really drags the tablet almost to a halt. But after that it's back to normal speeds. All in all, I still want a custom ROM of JB on here. I have Skype installed but haven't call anyone yet. Also, the speakers ARE AWESOME. I work in IT and all the guys loved the sound coming from this puppy! Streamed Downton Abbey without hiccups or buffering. Quite nice. No buyers remorse yet.
Cool! Can you side load app and install a different launcher like you could with the last fire?

So, I'm an owner of an original fire, got it as a Christmas present from my wife last year. I sold it a few weeks ago planning on getting the N7, but waited for the amazon presser about the new line.
After watching the live blog and all that, figured I'd give the KF another shot, and if I didn't like it, I'd return it and get the N7. After playing with this new KF for the past few hours, it's awesome, so much better than the original, for what I use it for. I like the new email client, the screen is fantastic, it's snappy and feels very cohesive and not so much an interface stuck on top of an andriod OS, even though it is.
So far, I'm impressed.
Yeah I just got mine as well and played around with it for about 10 minutes. So far the screen is gorgeous and the software isn't as laggy as the preview models that were shown in the videos. And the default web browser search engine for me was already set to Google. I'll post up more impressions in a bit.
Don't forget to update to 7.1.5. The sound on this device is freaking awesome...
Got mine today too...initial experiences:
- Side-loaded OnLive 1.2 and it works flawlessly
- Side-loaded Zinio reader from the Zinio.com site, but it FC several times...not usable. Emailed Zinio support
- Really want Rdio somehow, but haven't found the APK. Amazon Store says its not compatible.
- Fully MP3 library totally accessible and interface nice
- Amazon Prime Video works wonderfully but the series interface isn't so great...would like an easier way to tell were I left off on my Sons of Anarchy catch-up.
- Hulu Plus works but playback is janky--just isn't smooth or integrated
- I personally find the overall interface skinned nicely, but clumsy to navigate....coming from Gingerbread, Jelly Bean and iOS.

Interesting quote from a reviewer
This is a Wi-Fi-only device that Amazon has packed with dual antennas, support for MIMO and reception in both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands in an attempt to speed up the connection. Despite that, I found Web browsing to be noticeably slower than on the Nexus 7 -- so in my experience, at least, that hardware addition is for naught.
The device is missing some prominent hardware features that its competitors have, such as GPS. The Kindle Fire HD's processor is far from leading-edge: a 1.2Ghz dual-core OMAP 4460 Texas Instruments processor, compared to the more powerful quad-core Tegra 3 processor that powers the Nexus 7. After several hours of use, I found the tablet seemed to suffer occasional lags when opening apps and on occasion when using apps. Restarting the device solved the problem, but then the lags eventually reappeared.
The middling-level hardware isn't as surprising as you might expect, because the Kindle Fire HD hasn't really been designed to be an all-purpose tablet -- despite Amazon's claims to the contrary. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos summed up the purpose of the Kindle Fire HD succinctly during the product announcement when he said, "The Kindle Fire is a service."

Hehe, I may do that too. That's why somehow I have a Motorola Xoom, iPad 2, iPad 3, Kindle Original, Nook Touch, Galaxy Note, Motorola Razr Maxx, and Galaxy Nexus.
The Fire HD appealed to be because I wanted more or less a dedicated reading device that also does other stuff. The antiglare screen looks pretty good so far and that was a plus for me. Now, if I can only get it to run Zinio stable, then I'll have pretty much achieved my goal.
I can deal with the text layout of Business Week from Amazon on the Fire, but for my other two magazines--Outside and National Geographic--I really want the full color magazine experience since its so much about the photography. Zinio's resolution is just so much higher than the same magazine pages via the Amazon Kindle app. I think Zinio uses vector for the layout where it appears Amazon is rasterized.

16gb vs 8gb for $199, much better sound, apparently better screen, hdmi, possibly better build quality. and maybe a better camera.
versus gps and Tegra 3.(not sure if Tegra 3 is usefully better other than Tegra-only games).
I like them both but I really want the better sound and hdmi, and hacking would eliminate one of the main advantages of the Nexus 7 which is the larger app selection.
I got mine today. Too locked down for my tastes but a root in the near future will take care of that. I like that I can "borrow" books from Amazon and watch whatever prime videos that are in Amazon's catalog. Micro hdmi works great, screen looks fantastic, the speakers sound pretty good and I can fit the 7" in a cargo pocket. Overall, I think it's a good buy for $199.

At my netbook the fonts are foggy and hard to read...
No there isn't. The only other way is if u used another screen. Like on one of my laptops I have good enough res to use the apps but not good enough for other features. But I hooked it up to my tv with a vga cord (or a hdmi if ur notebook has one) then where u change the res u can make it only show image on the second screen (the tv) then u can chang the res as high as ur tv will allow. U can then get andromouse app on ur android and download the server on ur pc then u can sit back on the couch and use ur pc on the big screen

Supposedly the regedit method no longer works in the RTM or retail versions.
I have an old HP Mini that I installed Windows 8 on and it's max resolution was 1024x576. What I did, was I found a modified Samsung Intel GMA 950 driver and installed it on my netbook, it now gave me two additional resolutions... 1024x768 and one that was even higher. Certain things don't look all that great, but it's simple enough to switch back to 1024x576 when I'm in desktop mode where I spend most of my time. Regardless of which resolution or driver I'm using, it doesn't effect speed for me.
I was going to just stick with Windows 7 on the netbook, but Windows 8 boots up and runs so much nicer on the netbook that it's given it new life.

That is a hard code. Those little netbooks were so cheap for a reason. You can still run Windows 8 on them and use the desktop, which actually is a good idea because Win8 uses less resources and is faster on older hardware. I run it on a Lenovo X61 and basic operation is as good as my Lenovo Twist.

I've seen a lot of threads about using your tablet as an extended desktop or second monitor, however most of these are achieved over wifi and therefore I imagine are quite laggy.
I'm not that bothered about having it wireless, as I'm going to have my tablet next to my laptop anyway, I'm looking for something that connects through the usb port or micro hdmi so I can extend my laptop desktop to my nexus to utilise the touch display for things like photoshop editing, without having the lag that comes with wifi.
Anyone know of any solutions to this?
Oh also the max supported display res by the laptop is 1920x1080.... does that mean the desktop will look rubbish on the nexus screen?
Cheers.

Having it connect through usb is very unlikely. HDMI is impossible. Your best bet would be to use Splashtop or a similar wireless program. Splashtop is pretty damn close to real time (from what I've experienced). It also depends on the resolution you set it to stream. 720 might be better for what you're trying to do.

Cheers.

I agree with the gentleman above. Splashtop is extremely good at streaming a desktop. I have yet to try something like extended desktop with it but I can vouch that you can really even watch things such as netflix (not that you would for any reason, but things that require a good amount of bandwidth) without much trouble. I'm always impressed. Let me know if you're able to fix up an extended monitor situation with it.

I've had luck telling windows to "expand" even though there isn't an actual monitor. Then set the resolution of that "monitor" - connect through Splashtop - and switch to that monitor. I've had luck playing games, movies, and using desktop applications quite well using that method.

Ooh, I'll have to try that out. Now I just need to get the manual VPN splashtop trick to work and I'll be in bliss.

I've used idisplay , Wi-Fi and USB and works great in both modes. Strangely better in Wi-Fi mode. Regards

Yep, gonna necro a thread.
Anyone else had luck with this? I tried iDisplay and it continuosly crashed. I worked with support for weeks trying to get it resolved. Of course, they only answered me once every few days.
I think some of the problem might have something to do with the ridiculous resolution of our 10s.
Any other tried-and-true suggestions besides iDisplay? I used to use ScreenSlider, but that appears to be gone.
Cast Moto X screen to Chromecast!
Change build.prop line ro.product.device to hammerhead then save and reboot.
Easy!
I posted here in Android Development because those with unrooted phones can't do this...plus, it's just a downright cool tweak.

Thanks, very easy ?

As mentioned prior, I was able to hack my build.prop, to convince Chromecast that my phone is a Nexus 5... After a reboot, the CastScreen option populated and just started working.
Initial thoughts... While it is still in beta, I figured with all the hype casting would be pretty polished by now.
Not so much.
The Chromecast struggles to produce video, and seems to heavily compress (or take a long time) to render anything. Photos do fairly well, but streaming video from phone to TV is totally useless.. I also recognized early on that the Chromecast doesn't seem to support 5g wireless, which would likely help a great deal with throughput.
I have seen a few YouTube videos showing better casting results, but using true Nexus gear. To be fair, there's a chance the Moto X isn't officially supported yet because Google may want to push all of this heavy lifting through our GPU.
Oh well, always fun trying new things.

One last thing...I encourage others to post their experiences here

I discovered this build.prop edit on my own yesterday and tested it out. I noticed the heavy compression at first but things smooth out after a few moments. Quality seemed to be fairly good from what I could see. I'm I've got an 802.11ac router really close to my tv that my phone was connected to on 5ghz (though my chromecast was connected on 2.4ghz n). So maybe that had something to do with it. Playing sonic dash showed smooth clean graphics, but the latency was just a tad too slow to rely on the TV as a screen and the phone as a controller.
Watching MLB.TV quality definitely suffered a little and wasn't quite as smooth. Perhaps that was because I was streaming so there was data going back and forth to the router.
Also, note there is another post on XDA with an app someone threw together to enable mirroring on any device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/har...experimental-enable-mirroring-device-t2812193
I would guess this performance will be on par with casting a tab from Chrome on your PC. I know that experience sucks.

I do this wired from a desktop and it works extremely well - video, audio, whatever. I haven't tried the phone yet... but I'd check your network.

Wired I don't have as much of a problem but wireless I do. Then again there are many factors but all network related. Chromecast in relation to the router, wireless devices currently using the bandwidth on the router etc...
Since most people are not hardwired to their network I think its a valid post to talk about wireless tab casting especially since you will be casting with your phone wirelessly.
I'll try this on my moto x today. I'm casting to Chromecast from my nexus 7 and it works good. Not a lot of latency , buffering or anything. Quick and all, so I'll compare it with this hack on the moto x..

This works on my Moto X pretty well. Latency is higher than my girlfriends S4, but it still works.

This version is great for people who rooted with pie root on version 4.4.2 since you can't modify your build.prop.
when I tried to use with my XT1058 with CM11, google play caught ... does anyone know how to solve?
I enabled the first and third option
cast screen workin in moto x2013 trick
first open hot spot from any other android mobile . after that connect moto x wifi with that hotspot mobile after that you will easily uese miracast in moto x 2013... screen mirroring
.
You don't need to do this anymore. The Chromecast app now supports mirroring from any device via a button in the app.
