Posting for my friend...it's his X not mine.
He was rooted with z4 on froyo, then unrooted and did OTA to Gingerbread...but now he realizes theres no root for Gingerbread so he wants to go back to Froyo. How can he do this?
Thanks!

sorry but what is "prerooted gingerbread"???
Getting back to froyo and installing pre-rooted GB
Pre-Rooted Gingerbread - Means that it's already rooted when you install it. It's like having Z4root already installed when you get your phone from verizon.
Check out these links.
Link 1 makes a linux CD that you can use to SBF back to Froyo in about 10 minutes. This is a very easy method to get back to froyo. If you can burn an iso file to a CD then you can do this method.
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/d...-solution-your-windows-rsd-lite-problems.html
Then you can use z4root and install pre-rooted GB using the 2 flash method at link 2. Make sure that you use Droid 2 bootstrapper and not Droid X bootstrapper to install the rooted GB.
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/05/28/download-official-droidx-gingerbread-4-5-596-for-rooted-users/
Follow the instructions closely for ensured success.
This can all be done in about 30 to 45 minutes depending on your computer skills.
Nice post.
Just curious. Once the SBF is done, activation finished and Backup Assistant restores phone book from online....one can leave Froyo after z4root and call it done? (rooted Froyo)

Once you get back to froyo, you can download the droid 2 bootstrapper from the market. It will cost you another couple bucks but there are known issues with droid x bootstrapper and GB.

Yes you can but verizon will try to update it for you at least once, but from what I hear that will fail because of root and it won't try again.

Kov compiled that form the Droid 2 bootstrap so you don't have to pay for a second bootstrap.
And as far as the update being pushed to you...
I'm not sure if being rooted will be enough.
Use titanium backup to freeze a system app. Like that CityID app.
Accept the update...and it will fail.
And not ask again.

Well worth it. Otherwise, it will be on this and other websites by the end of the day. P3droid rocks. I've been messing around with it, and everything seems super smooth.
jideay, I got it from their website. Did you do method 2 (part 1 and 2)? If so I'm confused if I have to hit both downloads at the same time or do part one, then part 2. Do we need bootstrap or bootstrap2. I have both. Want this on my phone but a little confused.

This is what I did.... Download part 1 and part 2 then use droid2 bootstrap then install part 1 AND part 2 before you exit bootstrap and it should work fine
Did you have to do a "wipe" of any kind in recovery before installing? Also did you do a nandroid backup first before even downloading 596?

nope no wipe or nandroid.... all I did was install the who files, very easy install :-D
Okay, so I go into tbh app, find 2 part download, hit download 1 first or do I have tohit both at the same time.; It says "these need to be loaded at same time". Not sure what they mean by that. Then droid2 bootstrap, hit bootstrap recovery, then reboot recovery and then install zip from sd. Is that correct. Will tbh app download automatically to zip od sd? Reason i ask is I tried a coustom rom about 2 months ago, thought I did evewrything correctly, but coulsn't find darkslide rom on sd. Wound up having to sbf. Prefer not to go through that again.

2 things.
1. Someone told you what he did and it worked. Do that.
2. Why didn't you download the rom you couldn't find onto your pc and move to SD in recovery to where you could find it?
I'm in the process of downloading these files (1 THEN 2 because you can't download two at the same time) and we'll see how this goes.
Thejron, I was waiting for clarification on the tbh apparently, which you just provided. Thank you. I did load roms from computer, as I did the tbh 596 root. Why I couldn't find it on bootstrap recovery I have no idea. My screw up. It was there in astro. Sorry about offtraking on post.

That is exactly what I was looking for, I also did method 2. Everything seems to be running great.
In case anyone was wondering I'm using an unactivated droid X (rooted, stock .340), with wifi. I used my computer to download the files and copied them to my sdcard. I did a factory wipe, cache wipe and delvik (I think thats how you spell it.)wipe from clockwork using the droid2 bootstrap(not the droidx bootstrap). Installed the two .zip files in order and rebooted it came up fine.
Thanks - had it running now a couple of hours, may be psychosomatic, but it seems faster than .595.
yeah, i like it - transition was easy, i did had to re install a few things but over all very easy coming from .595 using the tbh app. very nice.

If you want Root on GB
Linux CD method
For those of you that are not very up on linux, the link below guides you into making a linux CD that you can insert into your windows laptop and contains all the programs you need to sbf your droid x back to froyo. You can then root it and upgrade to GB rooted using the 2 file method. It's almost idiot proof and the instructions are pretty good. If you can burn an ISO file onto a cd or usb drive and get your computer to boot from it then you should be able to sbf in about 10 minutes.

I have a droid x that is rooted and has the hack so I can wirelessly tether. I used the voodoo ota root keeper to try and keep my root. When I try to install the update it fails. I also have clockworkmod recovery installed. Any suggestions?

If you do take it there is quite a hassle getting it back to be rootable but if you must? You will need the latest version of rsdlite the desired sbf .602 or .605 which will revert it back to stock then you can take the OTA. My guess is somewhere along the way you froze or uninstalled some of the preinstalled bloatware? Which can cause the update to fail this was my case at least I sbfed to. 602 then took 2 OTA'S to .621 unfortunatley I regreted it you may want to look around at method to freeze updater instead your rooted try a different rom or 2 before making the decision

RootzWiki is the best place to find roms.
You can make complete backups in ClockworkMod Recovery of your entire rom. I would use MyBackup Root to backup things like individual apps, data, SMS, etc.

I also had the same failure, it was due to my having removed some of the bloatware. I loaded the 605 SBF file and rooted this installed al the root programs i would need along with voodoo ota and made a root backup, ran all my programs and did the update, all went ell and I was able to renew root with voodoo ota keeper. so far i have had no problems and am on the 621 update and fully rooted. Titanium backup works fine and I have been able to remove the bloatware.
Hope this helps and i am not too late.
From what every been saying, don't upgrade to 621. Just flash a custom rom right now since you are rooted and you can sbf back to 602 or 605 as needed.
I have 2 Droid X and both running CM7 and its awesome. I tried MIUI and Gummy but couldn't get into it.
4.5.621 install failure
Greetings. This looks like the right thread for this issue, but if not, please redirect me.
Some background:
DroidX
Android version 2.3.3
System version 4.5.605.MB810.en.US
currently rooted
Being a laggard, I did not accept the 621 update when first offered through OTA. My 4.5.605 DroidX was rooted and I'd read that I'd have to either unroot or "hide" root in some manner. It seemed like a bit of trouble and I had other life issues at the time.
After things cleared, I contacted VZ and they pushed the upgrade again. After "unrooting", I accepted the OTA upgrade, but each installation attempt failed after a successful download. No other diagnostics, just "the update failed". I tried this multiple times after reboots, battery removal, cache clearing and such. I then did a factory reset and tried again - still the same sequence, successful download, install now, update failed.
So I called VZ and Moto. They suggested accepting the update while attached to a solid WiFi. All the same tricks were turned as with the OTA (another factory reset, clear cache, remove/replace battery) only these attempts used the WiFi (excellent signal). Same failure.
Moto then suggested I ship in the unit and for $110 they would handle it. Right.
So I found Blur_Version.4.5.621.MB810.Verizon.en.US.zip, downloaded it to the SD card and attempted to install using the recovery mode menu. This also fails but at least offers up the message: assert failed apply_patch ("system/app/AccountAndSyncSettings, apk", "-" then some odd number letter sequences followed by "error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip status 7.
I've since rerooted just out of curiosity to see if that would still work.
All this to fix the irritating bug of the phone powering back on by itself.
Any hints or advice?
Thanks.
-Joe
Sending your device in is not necessary at all.
It seems that you have removed one of the systems stock apps. Replace any apps that you may have removed and attempt to take the update again.
Or, you can SBF back to 602 and take the OTA update to .621. Just be sure to back up everything that you need (not including app data).

missteps
Bloatware was renamed but I've been pretty careful not to delete anything... even kept a list of what was renamed and to what. All that has been rolled back but clearly something was missed. The only thing that threw me a curve was the symlink on the Madden Football app, but even that now looks pre-modified.
I take it that changes to ACLs would also glitch the update, but what about file timestamps? How pristine do these stock apps have to be?
I'll check them again since there's little to lose in doing so. If I can't find a discrepancy, the sbf to 602 will be the next step.
Ironically, the reason for embarking on the bloat removal at the outset was to cure the auto-power on bug, which is now supposedly fixed in 621.
But it's all about the learning.
Thanks again.

Download RSD Lite, i think the latest revision is 5.7. then download the 621 sbf, any necessary drivers, and it also helps to have the fastboot/adb package as well (even though fastboot is useless for us, still something good to have).
backup anything you need backed up or do a nandroid. reboot to bootloader. connect device to computer. start up RSD Lite. click show device. click the button that lets you browse for files. select 621 sbf. click start. sit back and let it do its thing and you'll be back up and running in no time

621 isn't all bad. It's easy enough to root it now with an apk called Framaroot and you will then have all the latest security updates from Motorola. If you do go with 621 you are then"stuck" there as it is not possible to go back to any earlier versions. Most of the most recently updated Roms work fine with it.

Ok i speak mo better engrish:
You have root great.
You are on firmware version .605.
You are probably going to get an update prompt. Hold off on doint it.
Go to market or whats know now as "google play store".
Type in search for two things:
Voodoo ota root keeper
Droid2 bootstraper
These are aplications.
The first one allows you to keep your root, when making an upgrade to the most recent firmware. If you dont you will loose root. It seems now there is an easier way to do this , but if you use the root keeprr you wont have to.
Download ota rootkeeper, then do the " keep root make backup" or what ever it says. Im sure youll figure it out .
Next search for " droid2 bootstrap recovery" DO NOT use the one that says for droid x. It will bork your phone.
Then judt hit enable bootrap. Do not hit go to recovery first.
Any quesyions ask or do a search here.
Just a question....why did you go with the a droid x ? Lol

Hey there FreakBoy, Just got around to doing all of this...Droid2 Recovery Bootstrap is not free...but I got it anyway...I only get 2 options "Bootstrap Recovery" and "Reboot Recovery"...don't get an option to "ENABLE"
On the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, there is no "keep root make backup" option. Only options I get are "Delete su backup" and "Temp. Un-root (keeps backup)"
The DX actually isn't mine...it used to be. I upgraded to LG Revolution (which I'm starting to hate cause I can't get it rooted again.) But the DX is now my roommate's and she likes it. I liked it too but needed more.
Ok np.
First hit bootstrap recovery.
You should then be prompted "tecovery succesfull" or something.
The other option "reboot into recovery"
Is another option to directly reboot into recovery from the phone while in os.
Thats great so now after you hit
"Bootstrap recovery" and are gtg,
Get into recovery and make a back up
Pronto! Lol.
Make sure battery is at least 60%.
Woot!
Now you can upload zipfiles via recovery.such as the free tether hack, which i guesse is irrelevant now since the fed said big red cant block tethering anymore.
And afa rootkeeper theres nothing todo but make sure all the boxxes are checked under "status"
There should be like 5 options they should all be checked you may habe to check the last one yourself.
The other two boxes beneath it you mentioned leave those alone.
Lmk how it goes!
Oh and welcome to the bs world of lg, where the moto is: stick it to the consumer as much possible.
This is the last lg phone i EVER by.
edit: the one thing I forgot to mention, ota root keeper ONLY works for an OTA (Over The Air) update. SBF will not work with the the voodoo ap.What I mean is you won't be able to keep root if you sbf to update, you'll have to manualy/oneclick install root again.
and HONESTLY IMO the ONLY reason to update to 621 is that I have heard it has a fix if your wifi is borked. Not 100% sure on this.
SO basically once you have done everything properly, and did what i said you should be gtg to do the ota if you feel the need.

Why is the Droid X Bootstrap app bad?
SmokinHawtVegasChic said:

To make the backup...just reboot into recovery and do the "Backup and Restore"? There is no backup only option.
Ok the backup is done like this:
First you need to boot into recovery.
You can do this by power an vol up or just hit the reboot recovery from bootstrap.
The phone will shut off and reboot to recovery. You need to have the phone shut off to do the powr/vol.up thing fyi.
Hold the power first then vol. Up key together. Hold them both together.
Now,
You should be at a green screen .
Use the vol but to scroll the power button for "enter".
Scroll down to backup recovery
Enter
You should see something like "create back up?" Or something.
I cant remember but i believe it will force you to scroll down to "yes" in between a bunch of "no's".
It will ask are you sure....i think...lol
Anyways its pretty basic, i wont judge you on your smokin hawt looks and will assume you got this far so youre smart enough to figure out what im saying.
So basically scroll to back up and hit yes until it does the backup.
Phone will reboot into download mode and reboot again back to the os.
Voila! You now 'ave ze back up!
Hope it works out for ya!

Hit me up in the REVO forum. I'll help get your revo rooted and Rom'd. Then you can try out one of my themes.

There really is no best ROM
It's whatever is best for you, but I do recommend trying Vortex Liberated (VXL).

Sorry for throwing a dead horse of a question out there but I'm kind of on a time crunch. I have my old DX running 2.3.3, (4.5.605), rooted, but no roms and Droid Bootstrap 2 Recovery is installed.
I need to return this phone back to full stock. I have a close friend who's going through some hard times and needs a phone. I'd like to give her a reliable phone that just works. Not concerned about rooting later on, just want to get it back to stock and allow the OTA's to push through.
I appreciate the help.

there is no need to allow ota to push, thats just adding a step
just flash the sbf version you want phone to be on
charge phone, install rsd lite, down load dx sbf, boot phone to bootloader, start rsdlite, select sbf, start
or use ezsbf for dx

I appreciate all advice. Thanks again.
Follow up question. If I'm just looking to unroot and bring back to stock, should I SBF using (Android 2.3.3 System Version 4.5.605 (VRZ_MB810_4.5.605_1FF_01)?
I followed your link SD, to the list of SBF files, and I'm guessing since I never took any OTA's since GB, this is the correct file to SBF.
Thanks again, just waiting for the battery to charge up.
if you flash sbf
phone will be unrooted, and stock, just backup any apps, texts, call logs, contacts..
that you want to save,
because you will need to wipe data, in android recovery
if system version 2.3.4/4.5.621 was never on phone you can flash
any DX sbf 1.13.604 through 4.5.605
and you can flash 4.5.621 if you want, it just changes the bootloader, so you can not use other SBFs
Lmk if you need 2.3.2 , have that and the old tbh tether hack zip .
Edit: looks like i also have 2.2.2 sbf as well.
