I'm in Canada, and I have no idea if OTA 2.2 is out for me yet, and people are telling me cyanogen wont have his 2.2 ready for a while because of the source.
I'd like to go back to stock. I've flashed cyan, a differen't kernel and haven't done anything to my radio, and I did a recovery image. If I follow the stock guide in the DEV section it doesn't let me do any OTAs. I think it might be because I kept RA recovery, but I don't know how to get rid of that. I searched and found the stock recovery ZIP but it was corrupted.
Also, if I do go to stock to get 2.2, will it give me all 512mb ram?

I can say if you follow the stock guide in the DEV section (including flashing the recovery.zip, which is included), you will get an OTA. I did, which is the older update ERE27.
is it possible to switch to another custom recovery after I already got clockworks?
I tried unrevoked but its stuck in the reboot (I believe its trying to root my aria again)
not sure what youre trying to do.... i believe Clockwork is the only Recovery for rooted phones. if you want to flash a custom ROM, well that is something else altogether. please be specific as to what you want to flash to the phone. include a link to the flash too
I was trying to flash psfreedom recovery rom from here
http://psfreedom.com/wiki/HTC_Aria
I believe the method on that website was for unrooted arias without clockworks

To flash a different custom recovery on your Aria, you need to rename the zip file LIBEIMG.ZIP on the SD card and boot in HBOOT (Power on the phone by holding down VOL DOWN and the Power Button). When it boots to the HBOOT screen you should see text stating that it found LIBEIMG.ZIP and is installing it.
awesome. now before I go ahead, is there any clockworkx recovery image I can revert back to?

I'm curious, what recovery are you talking about?
thanks for including the link. the instructions are clear.... Root IS required, Clockwork recovery is recommended, the Freedom Aria flash appears to be a custom ROM.
once the phone is Rooted, boot into Recovery, make a Nandroid backup, and flash downloaded zip file from SD card.
if you need help Rooting, there is all sorts of good methods available on this site. I use the Unrevoked method myself, but it works best on Linux or Mac OS

hmm I think you are looking at the old method which is a custom rom
The new one is a custom recovery which brings me to the question as I dont think you can flash a custom recovery in the clockwork custom recovery.
its possible im looking at the wrong thing, but far as i can tell it states "Recovery Custom ROM" which is totally different from Custom Recovery ROM
From link posted above:
"Update can be installed in recovery mode in Psfreedom settings menu via Update (local) or Update (net) if you have configured your wifi connection. Put the file on your SDCARD and install it.
Download Recovery custom rom : http://alephzain.klutsh.com/aria-recovery.tgz "

I have similar questions. I was trying to update my version of clockwork also using unrevoked again, but couldn't get it to work. I guess my questions are:
1. Is there any benefit in updating to a newer version of clockwork? My current version is 2.0.x.x and I believe the latest one is 2.5.0.4.
2. Will this same method work to do so? Can I rename the latest clockwork .zip file like this and get it updated?
I thought using the flash clockwork option in ROM Manager would do it, but it doesn't. If I reboot from ROM Manager it goes to the newer version, but if I reboot otherwise it goes to my original. The couple times I've used it, there appears to be maybe some different features/options in the newer one and I feel like I might be missing out on something!
What's the difference with this recovery?

These are probably two different things. once you got the recovery rom flashed you can upgrade it in recovery mode (hence its different from original clockwork recovery)
Ok bro, I didn't see much info about it so I'm gonna take your word for it.
@brswattt, far as I can tell this is " basically" used for jailbreaking the ps3.
@armyengineer;
you can use unrEVOked to flash the new recovery. if youre a Windows user, download the unrEVOked tool and run the .exe as Administrator. also make sure there are no conflicting s/w on the PC such as HTC Sync and you have all the drivers installed(HBoot, ADB drivers, etc.)
for more info about the PSFreedom Recovery, check out THIS Thread HERE
unrevoked keeps giving me
couldnt find misc
error, is there any other way to flash a recovery?

This still isn't working for me. Everything appears to go well at the start, then I get:
Waiting for root...(safe to restart if this doesn't work)
At which point the only way I can restart is to pull my battery. After doing so, it reboots and I get:
This was a triumph
It is not, however, any such thing. After another minute I get this:
Internal error: couldn't find misc.
So I've still got my original version of clockwork, 2.0.1.3, despite the fact that ROM Manager is telling me I have 2.5.0.1. I'm obviously missing something here.
BTW, if it matters I'm running CM 6.1.0

Although there is a ClockworkMod 2.5.0.4 version, I don't think it is for the Aria. According to ClockworkMod ROM Manager, 2.5.0.1 is the most current one for the Aria so I am believing what ROM Manager is telling me since it is written by the same the vendor.
I have tried CM 6.1.0
original HTC Aria 2.1 International Rom
and FR001 RC1
all no go. I think it has something to do with the phone already been rooted and has clockworks installed which makes unrevoked unhappy

OK, let's start from the beginning. You asked about installing an alternate recovery (PSFreedom recovery), but apparently it has its own installation procedure that needs to be run on an unrooted Aria.
What you need is to find just the PSFreedom recovery and copy it to your SD called in a file called LIBEIMG.ZIP and that is how you need to install it on a root phone that has ClockworkMod. Perhaps you need to go back to the PSFreedom thread and ask if a LIBEIMG.ZIP can be produced that can be flashed from HBOOT to replace ClockworkMod.
Looks like everything you need is located in the PSFreedom wiki:
http://psfreedom.com/wiki/HTC_Aria
I got a recovery.bin which is suppose to be used with unrevoked.
are you talking about the same one if I just compress it into a zip file?
None of these random workarounds posted in the dev section by random users who just seem to be guessing at things. Is there any word from a real dev working on allowing currently rooted users to install the OTA without un-rooting or flashing things through fastboot? Either by modifying the .zip itself or by creating a method to flash the provided .zip? I'm tired of seeing posts that read along the lines of "Oh, do this in post X then this in post Y and it SHOULD work, but if it doesn't check post Z and hope things work after that."
Download the nandroid backup that was posted. Restore it using Clockwork, then while still in recovery, choose mounts, and then mount /system, then flash the superuser zip from Koush's rooting tutorial, then you will have the OTA stock + rooted + stock recovery + stock boot + everything.
This is how I was able to upgrade.

Yes. You're restoring a nandroid.
Read this post, pretty much you're rerooting again and another step so it doesn't keep going back to stock recovery. Easy.

From the nandroid backup OP:
"Edit: According to xda member Luxferro the new update introduced /etc/install-recovery which may have not been in 2.3, but anyways, it runs this on bootup, and if the MD5 of the recovery doesn't match what is expected, it reflashes the stock recovery back over, so if you dont want the stock recovery to be flashed everytime you boot if your on clockwork or another non stock rom, just rename it to prevent it from running on boot. And for those of you who want to return your phone back to stock this nandroid will do that for you since it also flashes the stock recovery."
Just wipe and flash Paul's Gingerbread ROM.

Pretty much every time you flash an OTA update you're gonna lose root.
If someone took the time to modify the OTA update so you don't lose root, then it's not an OTA update anymore

I am currently s-off via UnrEVOked. I want to go from .97 to .76 to get fastboot.
Is it as simple as flashing the file from recovery?
1) Do I need to clear cache/dalvik?
2) Do I need to re-flash the ROM/radio/PRI/NV?
3) Any other implications or dangers of doing this?
I'd appreciate any info.
If it fails to boot up after you downgrade, you'll probably have to reflash the ROM.

1) What is the likelihood of my device not booting, based on what you have seen from people's actual experience?
2) If my device boots okay, then nothing else to worry about?
3) If my device does fail to boot, will I be able to boot into recovery? Will a nandroid restore suffice?
Thank you.
Not reflash the ROM, just the kernel should suffice.

For my knowledge, why is flashing the kernel necessary at all? If HBoot is a different part of the phone (sort of like a bootstrap), shouldn't the OS/ROM/kernel/radio/etc. not be touched at all?
Thank you.

Search for hboot in "EVO android development" section. I think Caulkin started that thread. It has the .76 hboot version with installation instructions. I would also recommend updating your recovery if you haven't already. I have AmonRA v2.2.1 with hboot .76 on my EVO. Amon's recovery has some cool features. Good luck dude.

Thanks. I have the files from that thread (actually on my subscribed list), I actually have all the HBoot versions at the ready. I am currently using CW 2.6.0.1 for now and I like it okay. There are even a couple of threads to help people with 2.x Hboot to go back to .76. Reading through them, they just don't exactly apply to what I'm wanting to do. I'm simply gathering some data before diving in.
Edit: I started the thread because I have read in different places where either 1) no additional flash is needed, 2) must re-flash radio/PRI/NV/etc., 3) must reflash ROM, or 4) may need to reflash kernel.
I not only want to know what one actually must do, but why...
My experience with downgrading my hboot went like this. After I applied the 76 hboot and tried to boot up, it would loop me back to the boot loader. After I went to recovery through the boot loader I flashed a new rom and got out of the boot loader loop. If you downgrade, you WILL get in that loop unless the method has changed and you will have to reflash a kernel or the whole rom.

There is a thread about this. Search!!
From what I can remember, the older hboot doesn't work properly with the newer nand chips, specifically those with 40000 byte erase blocks possibly present in rev 0004. Flashing an old hboot onto one of these results in a bricked evo.

Thanks. As I indicated in a previous post in this thread, I am aware of the post you cited, as well as another. They are actually both in my subscribed list. I have the 20K partition. I started this thread because those threads describe steps to go from 2.x Hboot to .76, not .97 to .76. I have yet to see a specific case where somone went from .97 to .76. I wanted to know if going from .97 would be less problematic than from 2.x.
I went from .97 to .76 with no problems other than the expected bootloop. I just reflashed my kernel and was good to go. No need to reflash the rom.

That used to be the only method of unlocking the NAND, you are safe. If you haven't done it yet then the best way to do it is through the bootloader though.

You will need it packaged as a PC36IMG to work, I went ahead and attached one with it if you still need it.
As a rule of thumb flashing from the bootloader is always safer than from the recovery. Odds are if the bootloader can't flash properly your phone would already be a brick, so you know it will be good. Although with something like the bootloader the recovery may actually call on the bootloader to do the actual flashing but you never know.

From my understanding ,CWM won't flash radios via Recovery. You have to use the pc36img.zip version.

How is the Kernal working out for you? Running MikG 1.03 as well here. Decent battery etc?
Also, pretty new at this but trying to get up to speed quickly, so thanks for your help - How did you update the PRL? I'm on 2.15.00.1.19?
Thanks man
I used the combo file in Calkukin's thread (in the Dev section). My battery on 1,03 is worse than on 1.02, so far, but you have to remember that anytime you flash a new ROM, you need to give it a day or 2 to let the kernel "settle in."
A lot of people are saying to downgrade PRI to version 1.77 and that will help, but I'm resisting doing that for now.
