I i were to root on 2.2 would i have to unroot to update to gingerbread
To receive the T-Mobile over the air update (OTA), yes. But there are plenty of gingerbread ROM's available in the dev section.
If your here on XDA then you probably are curious about using your phone to its fullest abilities. Running stock roms hinders that. I recommend rooting, and flashing CWM, and a custom rom. Get that sucker going!

as L&B said. If you are rooted running a custom ROM you will not receive the update from T-Mobile stating that 2.3.x is not available for your phone. T-Mobile doesn't know what phone you've got when you are using a custom ROM so they don't know what ROM to push. However if you are running a rooted/s-off standard ROM you will need to revert back to an unrooted state before preforming the update.
The great thing about hanging out here @ XDA is someone i'm sure will post a ROOTED version of the updated ROM shortly after T-Mobile pushes it out. So you can remain rooted, [backup/wipe] flash the new ROM and have the best of both worlds.
If i were to wait until gingerbread would i be able to root

Probably, but can't make any promises. Either way, the update that T-Mobile might be pushing OTA is available in Dev section, as well as tons of other awesome ROMs. Take a look, you might fall in love. (With a ROM, not a developer.. I'd hope )

If you're using XDA, you have no need for OTA's...Devs will always turn OTA into optimized versions instead with more features, so there's no reason to be concerned with OTA's, they dont offer anything special.

I wasn't... there was pretty much nothing new about it in comparison to the 2.2.1 stock ROM. The only thing noticeable different was the quick settings in the notification bar, and even that's pretty minor.

Lies! Are you saying my MT4G with a Quadrant score of 1.8 K-Jiggahertz isn't faster than one that gets a score of 2k! Impossible I have tweaked the ROM so much that it has imploded into an iPhone 1G. Tell me that isn't true power. To me I want 2.3.3(mysense) since it allows me to use the Sense 3.0 apps/lockscreen and some apps only work on Ginger.
i was thinking of waiting for the t-mobile update of gingerbread but i rooted and got the Virtuous Fusion MT4G v1.1.8 :: Gingerbread Sense 3.0/3D and I love it!
so much better and faster than t-mo stock

That seems reliable...
So did Toyota
In the past the rumors have rarely been reliable in regards to timing, so I wont be holding my breath. The Eclair roms that are available in the developers section work very well for now
That's definitely the most trustworthy-looking 2.x rumor so far. However, I won't believe it until it's officially confirmed by T-Mobile USA.
What timing! Just after finally rooting and installing CyanogenMod, an official OTA for 2.0 might be right around the corner. I wonder what would be considered preferred by most XDA users...a good modded 1.6 ROM like CM, or an offical T-Mobile 2.0 ROM.
The good modded 1.6 roms have a lot of 2.0 in them. Really besides aesthetics and the hella cool live wallpapers there are not a lot of changes that are noticeable. Speed wise there doesnt seem to be any issues either- they seem about equal. Might as well wait unless your into testing out roms and such. I am, so I have to have the latest daily
If this comes out I might actually Un-Root and Force Update.

It will be on here faster than you can unroot and force update! No need to worry about unrooting so you can get the newest update, there will be a version within hours of the OTA's starting on XDA, and if history is anything to go by, they will probably have it on here a couple days early.

CM is not a good rom. It is bloated and slow.
Official rom is also not good. It lacks some basic necessities, like wired tether and apps-to-sd.
The preferred choice should be an AOSP 2.something build with minor kernel customizations, and using the drivers that will finally be available from the official rom.
I would stay with my un-rooted G1 if there was a simple app to let me put my apps on the SD.

Don't remember this being the case when Donut was released. At least not the stable versions.
try manups 2.1 rom.
if you can do with out hd youtube and videorecording its faster than cyanogens latest. it's actually the first rom i've stuck with more than a day that isn't cyanogens.

This is a just leaked rom for the galaxy s. hopefully the devs can use it for the vibrant.
well even if not at least we know now that Samsung wasn't lying about March for the euro/Asian markets.
Nice, hopefully we will be able to use this to our advantage?
Also, couldn't we flash this since we now have the kernel that allow us to flash i900 ROMS? If we could just flash those files, then flash the kernel through Odin somehow it might work. Idk though, I'm no dev.

GINGERBREAD leaked
damb, this is so great, im thinking maybe tonight we might have a port for the vibrant, and i wonder if eugene and krylon know about this considering, it just today got leaked, a few hours ago.............. anyways, everyone post on this, lets get the hype going, we want this baby ported ASAP.. always thanks so much eugene and krylon, my brothers of galaxy android
So far from what i've read over there...
Looks like quadrant scores are not improved over 2.2 which is what i'm sure most people are hoping for. It also appears that the screen off animation is not present in the rom. It's also using Touchwiz 3.0 and not 4. Market is broken, and gingerbread keyboard also not included. Looks like an early beta build from what i've read.
**edit**
market is working, they have root access, and they are in the process of deodexing.
So far from what i've read over there...
damn double post. please delete
Sweet, hope we can get some cooked roms soon
The bad thing about it, it uses touchwiz 3.0, not stock.

The kernel that allows us to flash i9000 ROMs is only 2.2 and 2.2.1 compatible. I'm pretty sure someone would have to build a new kernel to let us flash that or port the ROM over.
The crowds are getting restless over there. They're in an uproar about "this is missing" and "that is missing". One of the complaints is about the gingerbread wallpaper being missing. But these guys forget that our 2.1 devices didn't come with stock 2.1 walls. They instead came with whatever wallpapers samsung gave us. Overall it's starting to sound more complete than the first froyo leaks that we used to have which is reassuring. Some of the guys say that the leak is stable and everything is working on their devices. One of the nice improvements they're reporting is functioning hardware acceleration.

Funny to see their behavior over it when we are just sinking our teeth into 2.2.1. Maybe its a good thing though.. I myself am so pleased with the performance boost of 2.2.1 that I'm in no rush to flash again but of course I'm in the minority on that.

I agree, but with root... Root. Freeze bloat. Enjoy.
Depends on how much other stuff the devs have going on. I'd guess about a 2-4 weeks.
I mean, it was just leaked a day or two ago, it's going to take a bit of time.
I hope they come out. The bloatware sucks. LPP FC's for me so I have to use the stock launcher. Moto's gingerbread 'skin' seems weak and unfinished (hence leak I guess).
Love the performance boosts though. Cannot wait to root. I've given up hope for an AOSP DX rom though (Froyo or Gbread).

LPP works flawlessly for me, have you tried the usual thing? Clearing dalvik cache & system cache?
You're not gonna get a *true* ASOP ROM due to the locked bootloader...which is why CyanogenMod isn't on the DX or D2.

I'm going to have to agree. Froyo was great to me, but when I jumped to GB... wow. Quicker, looks better and runs smoother. I just got a replacement phone yesterday with 340 on it and I can't believe I actually used it. Tossed 595 on right away But as Schmidty said, you can always roll it back. To each their own, though.
BTW... that Gingerale looks awesome. I'm gonna try it when I get home
Schmidty and Kobalt, is there that much of a diff? New to world of customizing. I do have 2 X's (one on wireless). Maybe I'll give it a try on that one. I'm sure I can find a thread somewhere. You both recommend Gingerale? My real concern is seeing ongoing threads of issues with these various versions of GB (don't know if gingerale falls in that category). But I'm constantly reading and trying to learn more. This damn phone and these forums has created a monster out of me. I tried my buddies original droid yesterday (totally stock). I almost vomited. He's too afraid to do any form of customization or rooting.
You say faster until you actually load it and it includes more crapware and really is barely faster than the custom gb rom you put on the phone.
I'll stick with a rom'd froyo with gingerbread elements in it till a better gb rom comes out.
Do you have a preference serial?

I would way prefer a clean GB install (Cyanogen anyone?), but I haven't seen one for my X that is as stable as .595.
So I will keep my .595 build (rooted and deoxed) until I see something better.
Gingerbread is almost here? Where have you been? I have been running gingerbread for about a month now. The "official" update is just a number
have any of you guys tried Liberty GB? I downloaded the donate version of Liberty Toolbox from the market and installed the Nightly Gingerbread ROM. So far, kinda stable.
Some bugs are:
-Maps crashes sometimes out of the blue
-Calendars won't let you modify or add items
But I have gotten stronger 3g and faster reception, and faster system overall...
Hope to hear a release date of the a final build Liberty GB

I'd disagree when I flashed to 2.3.4 I could almost see the battery go down as I used it and instantly flashed back to 2.3.3
However a lot of people are getting better battery life so maybe you might be lucky but personally speaking stick to stock first see how you get on and then flash a new rom.
The official 2.3.4 should be out this month
2.3.4 is not a Samsung release only a leaked test rom .
Personally i would learn before flashing and be able to recover to stock/original firmware for warranty purposes .

Went from a Desire to the SGS2 and haven't looked back since. I think it's a great move. In contrast to what you read above, I'd recommend to stay stock for a while. Learn a little about touchwiz. TW is just as smooth, maybe even smoother, than CM7 on the Desire, believe me. There is really no advice to give, they are both great devices, but you will love the SGS2.

Upgrade to a custom rom, they are muuuch better, keeping in mind the warranty problems and such. I´m running a custom 2.3.4 and it´s perfect.
How about the issue on gaming? Does 2.3.4 got better game support?
