Gingerbread and Canadians - Galaxy S I9000 General

Still using Doc 9.9.5 android 2.2.1 and everything is prefect, good battery, no lag no nothing just prefect.
I been waiting for a Bell Canada Android 2.3/2.3.4 ROM but it seems we don't even have android 2.2.1 in Canada which is sad really. The ROMKitchen looks like is revamped and stable again and we got some good custom kernel's (speedmod w000t), i just want to make the jump but worried since there is no official CSC or Modem for Bell Canada and Android 2.3/2.3.4. In the ROM Kitchen i can see they have JL2 which is great but no CSC, so my fellow Canadians:
Are you on Ginger?
Having issues?
What ROM/Kernel?
Whats the battery life like?
I really like the Kitchen due to customizing it to fit my needs, any Ginger Canadians using DOC ROM?
Like i can get a full 24 hours out of my battery and i'm happy with that anything less is unexceptionable (that with very heavy usage), i have never seen the phone lag or freeze like the phone is at the prefect state and i would hate to have a half working battery draining ROM.

been running GB in various forms for some time: presently using JVP which appears to be the best iteration with the fewest inherent bugs. Brotuck has an excellent ROM and Damian's kernel is fast and stable even though he still has it labelled as an alpha.
I have tried the various modems and the various fixes out here for the 850 band, but find the KC1 modem to still be the easiest and best fit for Canadian use and it was the last official Kies upgrade from Bell -- it fixes some US compatibility issues over JL2.
No CSC as there is no official Canadian release as you point out: doesn't affect the use of the phone at all -- CSC just shows up as "unknown" but the phone, text and all other features are unaffected by this, just Bell bloatware not present which is a blessing.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Oh, yes, battery life on the rom/kernel combination I use is outstanding and speed is awesome, very smooth and very stable.
Did use the kitchen before and they have had a resurgence recently: so if you like their options, don't let any worries over GB hold you back.

Running GB now, firmware version 2.3.3 no issues at all yet...
Using DarkyROM JVH v10.1/ Kernal version 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJVH
Had a problem with the modem and was getting poor signal so had to flash I9000UGKC1 and it fixed all my problems.
So far the phone is running phenominal, super fast and super smooth. Battery life is fairly decent so far as well. So far 14 hours with heavy to moderate use and 35% battery left, but as well just loaded GB a couple days ago. Dont have any apps loaded on yet to help increase battery life other than what the ROM came with.

Yeah i been using KC1 modem every since it was released and will be my modem of choice for 2.3. I'm only really worried about is the CSC. I read with incorrect CSC you have issues with text messages, 3G, and MMS. I could care less for MMS but i have used it in the past so would like to keep it if i could. I know if 3G and text messages where not working you guys would not use it but is MMS working for you guys?
I had Darky ROM before all seemed fine so i assume its the same when i flash a Europe CSC, any idea which one i should flash? XEU NEE?
I might just hold off a bit till android 2.3.4 is out of testing in the ROM Kitchen and just flash that.

absence of csc has no effect on mms, text messages or 3g -- had all three for several months without the Bell CSC

Froyo on Stock Vibrant, what might we expect?

I'm guessing that a good handful of us enjoy using our Vibe's in stock config, and only wish for "good" performance with less instance of lags, burps etc. We drool over the idea of rooting, applying OCLF and such things, but don't want to risk a blowout! IE, "Add another brick to the pile".
Myself, I'm choosing to wait for the Froyo update - before committing to a root/lag fix attempt.
Can we have sum input on what might be anticipated with the 2.2 update a far as performance for the Vibe? Has NE1 managed to put Froyo on a stock Vibrant - if so, I venture that an "In House" eval would be appreciated by many
Running froyo right now. There was just an unofficial leak of the tmo froyo for our vibes, and the fixes are being ported to existing roms, and being used as source for new builds as well. Its here, and its frozen goodness. A little research (ok maybe not a little, know what youre doing before you do it, make sure you can get into recovery and dl mode, and read read read) before you flash, and soft bricks can be either avoided or easily recovered from. Check out the Vibrant Android Dev forum here at xda to see your icy opions. I prefer Eugene's Macnut myself, there are a couple of other flavors currently that are nice in their own ways, but you gotta try em to find out.
Performance wise, the stock tmo froyo leak itself is faster and smoother than eclair running oc with any lag fix in my experience. The custom froyo roms (macnut and such) are even faster, with no lag fixes applied or existing ones disabled.

I used to be all about rooting. Had a Hero when it first came out for Sprint. Loved flashing new ROMs and what not. Had CM6 on it before I jumped ship to T-Mobile and the Vibrant. I had rooted but always ended up going back to stock ROM because I like the way it looks and with launcherpro it seems to run better than Touchwiz. Ive yet to find a ROM on here that I really like. I Odined back to stock for the JI6 and Have been running it ever since.
I will probably re-root when the official 2.2 comes out but Im playing the waiting game on these leaked ROMs.
As far as the leaked 2.2 roms go, I'd have to say that I am currently running onyx by teamwhiskey, and it is awesome! It has a lot of fixes but still feels very much like stock.
You should give that a try, oh and don't worry about bricking your phone, odin is your friend and the anti-bricker!

Oynx is fugly, and JK2 is a bit too buggy and unrefined in general. It's OK if you want to try it but you'll probably go back to the smoothness of JI6. Apps install better with FroYo but the phone lags badly with any launcher for some reason. I'm waiting for the official release. I also got some odd "No Internet Connection" errors but that might be my fault.

Everyone's experience is different, and everyone's tastes are different too.
So far, it's been a smooth sailing with Onyx for me after SD_Fix.zip was applied.
FROYO goodness on my Vibrant, loving it!

Macnut R10, not entirely jk2 based but drivers to fix the gps and data issues ere ported over, not sure what else was, is not buggy at all. Running the zeam launcher, no lag. Its honestly the most stable froyo out right now, ive tried them all. Earlier ones were definitely buggy, but the new leaked files fixed all that on my phone.

Try the ASOP ROM from Anderdroid yet? I'm running that one and it's very smooth and responsive. It looks very clean in my opinion.

i take it you don't use wifi calling then? in macnut r10, wifi calling gets stuck at enabling (which is one of the reported problems in that thread).
OP: I have the ODIN froyo running on my vibrant right now. It's nice and smooth for me (and will be for you too if you haven't been running lagfixes in 2.1). I get nice battery, and nice reception. a plus for me, is i can turn off data (since i don't have a data plan) and not use battery constantly trying to communicate with 3g/edge.
The only thing i notice on 2.2, is the occasional lag. but that's about it.
Is there a limitation when installing apps? When I was trying ROM's last night and installed apps, it seemed like I was limited to about 3 app download/install at a time?

Nope, I do not use wifi calling. Seeing how that is new to the phone, I woud expect it to be buggy. The next release from Eugene shoud be based on jk2, might fix that problem. We can't really expect the new fuctions from tmo to be perfect until we get an official release.

Dropped Network Connection with i9000 Based ROMS

The purpose of this thread is to diagnose, and possibly fix, the dropped network connection issue when using i9000 based ROMs on the Captivate.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you probably can ignore this thread.
But if, like myself, your connection to your provider's network is hit and miss after installing an i9000 ROM then I want to hear from you.
Why go through all this trouble?
Because most i9000 ROMs run circles around the current Captivate ROMs in terms of speed as well as function.
Bluetooth is a prime example since voice dialing with a BT headset works on i9000 but does not on Cappy ROMs.
It will help if you provide the following:
1. Carrier (mine is AT&T).
2. Approximate date you bought your phone (got mine launch day back in August).
3. Current ROM and/or ROM you experienced the issue with (I've used just about every i9000 ROM out there but currently I'm using Axura 2.3).
4. Your ideas/theories as to why the problem occurs.
5. Any "fixes" you may have tried that improved or solved the issue.
One theory I have as to why this is happening is that my carrier (AT&T) may be intentionally "kicking" me off the network when it sees that I'm using a phone that is configured for another network. mad: bastards!)
If that's the case, then maybe there is a way to spoof and make AT&T think the phone is still pure Captivate.
Or, maybe an app can be developed that will monitor connection status and automatically reboot the phone when connection is lost for more than a couple of minutes.
I'm pretty sure we can figure this thing out if we put our heads together.
Thanks in advance for any assistance given.
Seems like modem would be an important thing to track IMO.
AT&T wouldn't boot you off. Because if they did, they would have been booting me off daily with my Nexus One.
I was having problems with a rom. When I lost connection (say at my UNI, since they have poor service in the lecture halls) it would reconnect, but data wouldn't ever work again. I would have to reboot my phone to get it to work.
I since reinstalled an updated ROM, but haven't been back to UNI to test it out, since the semester is over.
I just assumed it's a bug in the modem that was being used in my rom.
Carrier - AT&T
Purchased - Launch Day
ROMs Tried - All the i9000 modems lost service and the i9000 kernels paired with captivate modems wouldn't give me call sounds.
Currently on a JJ4 Kernel+Voodoo 5 / JJ4 Modem slow upload speeds but d/l~3.2mbps and definitely seems the most stable as of now
Fix - no earthly idea

Have you tried the new JK3, JK4, or JL3 modems? I had similar issues with the old JG8 modem, but with the new 2.2 modems out there I no longer have these issues.

Yes all three modems tried with JJ4 Kernel- Didn't have in-call sounds (ringing, dialing, other person talking, other person hearing me). Data speeds were great, but I can't live without the phone part of my phone.
AND when I tried pairing the JK4 modem with i9000 kernel it was super fast but kept getting "no service"

Not trying to derail this thread and I realize I am new here but are you saying you were running an i9000 kernel on your Captivate? If you run an i9000 ROM you must use a reorientated kernel like xcaliburinhand's.
For reference: I am running Darkyy's 5.5 JPU ROM, xcalibur's reorient kernel 2.2.1 and the JPU modem on my Captivate. I have been running a JPU modem and Darkyy's JPU ROM (5.2-5.5) for a few days now and I haven't had any issues with data.

Yes these were all reoriented i9000 kernels for the captivate
I'm seeing that the phones purchased after the launch date aren't having these issues
I am not sure if i have the same issue...Although my data speeds are very crapy lately...Does this have anything to do with what you are talking about

All of those modems dropped service for me.
I'm currently running the JL3 and my service just dropped about an hour ago and I had to reboot to get it back.
That's why I don't think the modem is the issue...it's either in the kernel or the network is rejecting the phone.
I have been having problems since I flashed Axura 2.2 on my captivate. I do not receive any phone calls or texts, of course my carrier is ATT

That's certainly a possibility. The reason I haven't done this yet is that the inconvenience of having to "stock" my phone then trick AT&T into thinking there's something wrong with my phone even though it's just their lousy service and them retarding the phone so it doesn't beat their almighty iPhone far outweighs the benefits of getting a slightly faster phone. Plus, I'm waiting on a fix for this one, cause I've kinda grown attached to her.
Is there anyone that has this issue and is NOT on the AT&T network?
Or is it isolated to just AT&T phones?
i have been having this issue too mainly cm6.1 betas, tried different modems all do the same thing, wondering if its a combo of firmwares
You're missing the two most important pieces of information, kernel and modem version.
There after known modem kernel incompatibilities. I've been on an i9000 modem & kernel since we got the first ones back in the end of september or beginning of october, and I've never had an issue with anything.
Build date (underneath the battery) would probably be more helpful than purchase date if it's actually a hardware issue.

Which number is the build date by the way?
there have been a few threads on this. they were also moved because some more than "helpful" people decided it didnt belong in the development forum (i, obviously, dont agree there).
however, we have made some headway. please see the following 2 threads:

you can continue chatting here or take up over there.
tl;dr - we have been working on this. it seems like launch captivates are the hardest hit, and it seems like i9000 based roms AND modems cause the issue. running a captivate based rom (the most important part) and modem seems to get you back in action. - easiest move: flash cog2.3b6 (dont have a DL link right now and DG took it off his repository) which is captivate based. for performance, toss the latest voodoo kernel in there.
keep us posted on your findings otherwise.
Batch #1006 (assuming that means June 2010, if it's anything like the printed control boards I warranty for work)
Rev. 0.4
I've got a JJ4 modem paired with a JJ4+Voodoo kernel right now and very stable and no "No Network" issues. But it is a fair bit slower than the Perceptions and other i9000 based ROMs. Something I'll just have to deal with I assume.

Please recommend me a most battery saving 2.2.1 rom =)

Hi everyone..I'm new here just bought a SGS not long ago..Can any one of you recommend me a stock 2.2.1 rom that give the best result in battery life? I wouldn't pick Gingerbread now not until its officially released.
I know installing kernels may lead to a better battery life..but thats not my call haha..because I'm too lazy to catch up the frequents updates of custom rom and kernels and thus makes me a hardcore flasher lol..So I just wanna know if there's any rom which is well known for battery life..can last about 3-4days, without any custom kernels
-Best Regards-
I use Darky's 9.5. Battery Life is pretty good.
Stock JPY or WJS8
jje
I'm using stock JPY rooted and lag fixed and for a normal use I find it good for me.
But as allways it deppends from user to user...

The most important Thing is to have a modem which fits your country and carrier.
Just read in this thread which it could be for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9579987&postcount=11945
I would recommend you Ultimate 8.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854799) it was the best for me, I got 2-3 times more life in my phone.

Experiencing missing calls

I had this problem since SC roms but now I have Evil froyo rom and having alot more missing calls. My friend told me that he called me three times but didnt get any....i really dont care about the multimedia but phone calls!!!! phone should functioned as it should be but its not...so anybody knows how to solve this problem...?? I tried to do *228 thingy but still doing this...
What radio/modem are you using? Try using ED04, if you're not already on it. I had your problem before and ED04 seemed to help.

Go back to eclair with ea28 radio. There is no froyo rom/radio free of this issue currently available. I have tested all radios available right now and had missed calls on all of them. ED04 made it even worse actually.
I've tried numerous radios, roms, and kernels and am currently on stock ED04 with the same issues. I think ED04 is actually worse on my phone as well. I've read about quite a few people having the same problem and the overall consensus is that it's a hardware issue.
For ****s and giggles, Odin the EC09 radio. I personally use it and find it to be pretty nice, much faster data speeds, and it MAY fix your issue.
It's not a FroYo deal, it's a network issue. My wife's Fascinate is still on DL09 and she has missed calls too. A lot of people believe it is an issue with LTE affecting 3G, since the problems started popping up around the same time LTE was flipped on
Call and complain... They know it's a known issue, but they are not fixing fast enough. It's pretty sad. I miss calls from the wife and boss... You may even get the droid charge...

Yeah I did call and they offered me another Fascinate, Droid X or D1 so nothing that I could accept. The only upgrade that makes sense available right now would be Charge but had no luck convincing them. Right now I'm testing EC09 leak modem and so far all calls came through (as far as I know) but it was just 2 days so it's too soon to know if it helps or not.
They won't offer me jack... Am I saying something wrong? Hahaha
This freakin issues is pissing me off since i got this VZN fascinate imported here in India ,
and its not NETWORK its just bloody FROYO and FASCINATE , somehow all froyo ROMS have got this crap issue.
i have started inumerable threads about so many ROMs and setups but this issue always keeps coming back.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that the GB roms wont have this bug..
Just to keep myself connected i have yesterday flashed back to dl09 debloated and using ed04 ( i know its full of crap this modem is , but i am giving it a shot with dl09 and so far in last 24 hours havent missed a single call.
I'm on hold with VZ tech support right now, I can't stand this bug anymore.. I'm trying to find a new job so I can't afford to be missing calls
edit: they're sending me a new fascinate.. might just have to buy another phone and use my fascinate as an mp3 player
Trying out the EC09 (gingerbread) radio.. I may not know anything for a few days.
I have been having this problem every since I started using froyo
if I switch back to eclair it is gone
It is not in the radio
It has to do with the phone going in a deep sleep it will not wake up
The deep sleep is causing other issues with sms, mms, alarm not working when set all because it will not wake up
Alot of problems Same cause
The only way I have found to stop this is go to Eclair

Yes indeed, ECLAiR is the only answer for this issue.
if anyone wants to install debloated rooted version of dl09 then simply ODIN this > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=911677
after that boot it up
store latest SU file in sd card and this debloated ROM (only ROM and nothing else ) from adryn >>
http://adrynalyne.us/files/roms/DL09_2.zip
and then again shutdown and ODIN CWM and without booting install SU first via recovery
boot up
shutdown
reboot into recoveryand flash the alreday stored adreyn's debloated version.
My wife has always been on DL09 and still experiences it... Which is why I keep saying it isn't a froyo issue

Been using it for couple days. Nothing new to report, went back to ED03. If we could just get the stability of GB 3G signal I would be a very happy camper.
+1 for the EA28 modem, at least for my phone in a VZW marginal reception area where 1x reigns supreme. Easy to get the missed calls, by attempting calls during bootup, sleep-wake, busy with GPS/aGPS, etc.
In my particular case, ED04 made things worse. EC09 was much much better. EA28 had the least missed calls as far as I can tell (n=1). YMMV.

Canadian SGS2 Owner's Thread

Hi Everyone,
Just got the SGSII from VirginMobile. I know there is a thread about SGSII launching in Canada but I thought that us Canadian owners of SGSII need a thread for news, reviews and any additional information since its officially available in Canada as of July 21.
Looking forward to hearing from all owners about their opinion of the device, mini reviews and any relevant discussion.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
My mini review:
Amazing device. Very responsive. Screen is just awesome. The build quality is very nice, despite some reviews saying it feels plasticky, in my opinion, the lightweight and solid build is perfect for this device. When you hold it it feels like a premium device. Everything works like it should.
Pros:
AMOLED+ 4.3" Screen
Responsiveness
Light weight
8MP Camera
TouchWiz 4.0
Cons:
Battery was acting up for two days (Turned auto brightness off and removed some apps and widgets; it is back to normal now, 10% loss over 3hrs)
Maybe somebody can post the modem/radio file for our phone. That would be great!
Loving the phone so far. Thankful for chainfire's root kernel allowing me to titanium back from my arc. Looking forward to a healthy dev community here
Loving my phone all ready unlocked on Rogers.
I just wanna remove these DAMN Bell apps, seeing how we cant Root yet.

Root is available --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
battery life is awesome so far.
12 hours of use with 72% battery left (with very moderate use)
Myself and.my GF picked ours up last night, I'm coming from an iphone 2G so this is a big change.
There's a lot of redundant apps preinstalled, was kinda confusing at first.
Sent from my SGS2 using XDA App

Here are 2 links with modems/radios for our phones. The first ones are flashable through CWM and the second ones are flashable through Odin/Heimdall.

So far, here have been my experiences with radios...
I can't remember my first radio (KE4 of KF2), but it worked better than KE7.
KE7-Works OK.
KG1-Works better than KE7, but I totally lose signal about 4 times a day (need to put flight mode on then off to fix it).
KG2-Hard to say, I'm only using it since today, but so far, it's the best.
I've had mine since more than a month and a half now and I'm very pleased about the phone. It's my 2nd Android phone (I had a Motorola Milestone before).
I just hate touchwiz so much (but not as much as Sense or Motoblur).
What Bell apps are instelled on the phone? There must be so much junk apps on there, mine doesn't come from Bell, but has all of those Samsung bloatware apps, I guess it must be much worst with one that has Bell's apps on it.
If you want to get rid of those apps, you have a few choises...
1) Root and remove them manually.
2) Install a Samsung based Rom that removed those apps (Cognition is very good).
3) Install CM7 (altough there's still no stable release), you'll get pure (well, actually better than pure) Android.

theres like over 10 bell apps.
is there any software differences in our i9100M rom to international i9100 other than bell apps?
i hope its not modified like the i9000m (bell vibrant) compared to stock i9000m

XXKG2 is the European modem file. I'm looking for the UGKG2 (Bell modem file).
I'm sure it'll be released on samfirmware.com soon. Thanks for the reply though, I appreciate it.

Not 100% sure about this, but I've read somewhere that there's almost no difference between the i9100 and the i9100m from Bell. Thankfully it's not modified like the i9000 variant. I haven't seen one from Bell yet, so I'll probably just hop in a Bell store to take a look how different the software is.
Is there any of those Bell apps that could be interesting/usefull?

I may be wrong, but does it really matter? The radios are good for any region. If you ever get hold of a Bell radio, let me know where to get it, I'll try it to see how it goes with a regular i9100.
I picked up a Bell SGS2, flashed the XXKG2 full rom on it that Darkyy posted, then rooted it, flashed Darkyy kernel only from XXKG2, and then the zImage from the CF-Root kernel to remove the yellow triangle.
No bell apps now, and everything works amazingly well including signal and battery life.
There should be no difference in modem files, as the European model and the Canadian one both are the same phone. Both the i9100 and the i9100m have all the 3G bands, unlike how the i9000m and the i9000 didn't.
Just use the full rom that has what you need and all will work fine. I tried flashing a few full firmwares on my i9100m, all worked perfectly fine.
EDIT: GPS locks on also in roughly 5 seconds, indoors, so i don't think you need a Bell modem file.
Network Speeds
How is the network speed performance with Bell/Virgin?
I'm with VirginMobile
At home, I get speeds close to 1mb down and 1.5mb up (download speeds were very disappointing)
But at work (Toronto) I get 7-8mb down and 2mb up
Looks like location plays a huge role.. anyways I was happy when I saw 8322mb/s download speeds..
I flashed the latest stock rom (KG3) and used the CF-Root KG3 kernel.
My network speeds are MUCH better now.
Canadian (Bell/Vrigin) users:
are you guys experiencing the yellow tint on the side of the screen when its in low brightness setting?

Same here, and WiFi seems to be working better as well. Most importantly for me, the email application doesn't FC when I try to open it and connect to my work Exchange server.
You guys have a link to the latest stock rom? Is it bell's? Or is it just generic?
Thanks for the advice guys! I flashed KG3 along with the appropriate CF and it appears to have solved my GPS issues!

It's generic.
Anyone having issues adding a Google Apps email account after flashing KG3? I flashed the first one listed. Is there a difference between it and the second one?
