The purpose of this thread is to diagnose, and possibly fix, the dropped network connection issue when using i9000 based ROMs on the Captivate.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you probably can ignore this thread.
But if, like myself, your connection to your provider's network is hit and miss after installing an i9000 ROM then I want to hear from you.
Why go through all this trouble?
Because most i9000 ROMs run circles around the current Captivate ROMs in terms of speed as well as function.
Bluetooth is a prime example since voice dialing with a BT headset works on i9000 but does not on Cappy ROMs.
It will help if you provide the following:
1. Carrier (mine is AT&T).
2. Approximate date you bought your phone (got mine launch day back in August).
3. Current ROM and/or ROM you experienced the issue with (I've used just about every i9000 ROM out there but currently I'm using Axura 2.3).
4. Your ideas/theories as to why the problem occurs.
5. Any "fixes" you may have tried that improved or solved the issue.
One theory I have as to why this is happening is that my carrier (AT&T) may be intentionally "kicking" me off the network when it sees that I'm using a phone that is configured for another network. mad: bastards!)
If that's the case, then maybe there is a way to spoof and make AT&T think the phone is still pure Captivate.
Or, maybe an app can be developed that will monitor connection status and automatically reboot the phone when connection is lost for more than a couple of minutes.
I'm pretty sure we can figure this thing out if we put our heads together.
Thanks in advance for any assistance given.
Seems like modem would be an important thing to track IMO.
AT&T wouldn't boot you off. Because if they did, they would have been booting me off daily with my Nexus One.
I was having problems with a rom. When I lost connection (say at my UNI, since they have poor service in the lecture halls) it would reconnect, but data wouldn't ever work again. I would have to reboot my phone to get it to work.
I since reinstalled an updated ROM, but haven't been back to UNI to test it out, since the semester is over.
I just assumed it's a bug in the modem that was being used in my rom.
Carrier - AT&T
Purchased - Launch Day
ROMs Tried - All the i9000 modems lost service and the i9000 kernels paired with captivate modems wouldn't give me call sounds.
Currently on a JJ4 Kernel+Voodoo 5 / JJ4 Modem slow upload speeds but d/l~3.2mbps and definitely seems the most stable as of now
Fix - no earthly idea

Have you tried the new JK3, JK4, or JL3 modems? I had similar issues with the old JG8 modem, but with the new 2.2 modems out there I no longer have these issues.

so yea , the jl3 gives me roaming issues ,..
the jk3 rarely does ( and I say like it happened twice)
so I say its the modem ..

Yes all three modems tried with JJ4 Kernel- Didn't have in-call sounds (ringing, dialing, other person talking, other person hearing me). Data speeds were great, but I can't live without the phone part of my phone.
AND when I tried pairing the JK4 modem with i9000 kernel it was super fast but kept getting "no service"

Not trying to derail this thread and I realize I am new here but are you saying you were running an i9000 kernel on your Captivate? If you run an i9000 ROM you must use a reorientated kernel like xcaliburinhand's.
For reference: I am running Darkyy's 5.5 JPU ROM, xcalibur's reorient kernel 2.2.1 and the JPU modem on my Captivate. I have been running a JPU modem and Darkyy's JPU ROM (5.2-5.5) for a few days now and I haven't had any issues with data.

Yes these were all reoriented i9000 kernels for the captivate
I'm seeing that the phones purchased after the launch date aren't having these issues
I am not sure if i have the same issue...Although my data speeds are very crapy lately...Does this have anything to do with what you are talking about

All of those modems dropped service for me.
I'm currently running the JL3 and my service just dropped about an hour ago and I had to reboot to get it back.
That's why I don't think the modem is the issue...it's either in the kernel or the network is rejecting the phone.
I have been having problems since I flashed Axura 2.2 on my captivate. I do not receive any phone calls or texts, of course my carrier is ATT

That's certainly a possibility. The reason I haven't done this yet is that the inconvenience of having to "stock" my phone then trick AT&T into thinking there's something wrong with my phone even though it's just their lousy service and them retarding the phone so it doesn't beat their almighty iPhone far outweighs the benefits of getting a slightly faster phone. Plus, I'm waiting on a fix for this one, cause I've kinda grown attached to her.
Is there anyone that has this issue and is NOT on the AT&T network?
Or is it isolated to just AT&T phones?
i have been having this issue too mainly cm6.1 betas, tried different modems all do the same thing, wondering if its a combo of firmwares
You're missing the two most important pieces of information, kernel and modem version.
There after known modem kernel incompatibilities. I've been on an i9000 modem & kernel since we got the first ones back in the end of september or beginning of october, and I've never had an issue with anything.
Build date (underneath the battery) would probably be more helpful than purchase date if it's actually a hardware issue.

Which number is the build date by the way?
there have been a few threads on this. they were also moved because some more than "helpful" people decided it didnt belong in the development forum (i, obviously, dont agree there).
however, we have made some headway. please see the following 2 threads:

tl;dr - we have been working on this. it seems like launch captivates are the hardest hit, and it seems like i9000 based roms AND modems cause the issue. running a captivate based rom (the most important part) and modem seems to get you back in action. - easiest move: flash cog2.3b6 (dont have a DL link right now and DG took it off his repository) which is captivate based. for performance, toss the latest voodoo kernel in there.
keep us posted on your findings otherwise.
Batch #1006 (assuming that means June 2010, if it's anything like the printed control boards I warranty for work)
Rev. 0.4
I've got a JJ4 modem paired with a JJ4+Voodoo kernel right now and very stable and no "No Network" issues. But it is a fair bit slower than the Perceptions and other i9000 based ROMs. Something I'll just have to deal with I assume.

I have been testing I9000XFJM6 and with this rom you can lock onto more then 8 sats. This is the first time my captivate has worked as good as my evo's gps. If the gps start acting up ater a few days use the clear gps datat trick to fix it. This is what I did to get it working.
Loaded I9000XFJM6 rom(I used CSC_I9000DBTJM1.rar for csc)
Then load Stock Captivate kernel from here and use 512 pit
Then follow this guide and use method 1 then 2. I enabled skyhook as well.
If you have any market issues try wiping cache and data/factory reset.

I flashed FJM6 (different from WJM6 afaik) last night, haven't tested it with GPS. I'll be sure to report back tonight when I do test it.
But quick question, is it really necessary to flash the "CSC" file?

CSC just has extra apps for different regions. I dont believe its necessary. But make sure you are using I9000XFJM6 and not I9000XWJM6. Then follow the guide and use the clear gps data trick before testing.
I flashed the XWJM6 version a few days ago, and was very impressed with the GPS... but the signal never locked below 20dbHz. I've seen screenshots from the I-9000 forum that show locks below 20dbHz with XFJM6 -- so I am very excited to flash this one, and I am planning on doing so now!
With Titanium Backup, should I worry about restoring "all system data" from my previous flash? Will it take over broken things that may have been fixed in the newer ROM?
The issue isn't how fast it locks onto satellites or even how many, the problem is KEEPING a strong enough lock (or any lock at all) while in motion. I'm running JH3 (With the "GPS fix" from the Evo, and it still sucks) currently and have run all the i9000 roms at some point and none of them are any better. So until I can see a video or a TON of people seeing no issues with keeping locks while in motion I'm assuming it's just like all the 20 other "Fixes" that have come out or implemented in the last month. Not trying to be rude or knock you, it's just getting a quick lock has been fixed for a while, it's maintaining a lock in motion that's the issue.

That would be really cool, I thank you. I really really wanna believe it works like it's suppose to but like you said, there's so many fixes I've almost lost all hope lol.
I just tested the GPS with this ROM (XFJM6):
(1) I was able to lock onto 9 satellites (as many as my phone saw)
(2) It stayed locked on satellites <20dbHz
(3) I walked from my front steps, to my garage, and down the street... although GPS Test would say 16-32 feet accuracy, I swear it had me <10 feet accurate the whole time.
I'm not sure what is left to fix with the GPS... but this is the real deal (at least so far for me).
Next up will be full Google Navigation / My Tracks testing -- although I had very good results with XWJM6 already, I can only imagine it being better now.

Try a different CSC.
What CSC is going to be in English? I did the German DBT one for S&G.. and can't seem to flash another one on top of it (BMC or OXA for example)
I downloaded the update.zip and did a "reset" - the phone is back in English - my connection shows an "H" where 3G would have been - am I supposed to have HSDPA? (just want to make sure I don't need to flash another CSC)...

Correct. Now by chance does anyone have the default captivate modem .tar?
Odd, my numbers jump from 400kbps to about 1400kbps. And that's with only about 2 minutes between tests using the same server. I'll upload the stock modem in a few minutes.

There are 9 categories for HSUPA - the slowest is .73Mbits/sec.
If you are seeing close to 1Mb (I assume you meant bit not byte) then you are wll into HSUPA speed for uploads.
If you were getting 1MB (Megabyte) then we would all be jealous as you would be kicking A** at 8Mbits/sec.

yep AJerman tried this long time ago , the only way we can get HSUPA and voice call working on both 850 and 1900 Mhz is to use bell vibrant modems with Vibrant Kernel
or just use a I9000 rom with the bell vibrant modem
either case you have to live wit some limitations
with vibrant kernel
you lose GPS and screen orientation , button issues can be fixed.
with I9000 kernel
you have issues with recovery console and ROM manager and screen orientation issues.

Really? Has anyone tried using a custom kernel with the Vibrant modem? Or were the custom kernels compiled to only work with the Captivate modem.
Still using Doc 9.9.5 android 2.2.1 and everything is prefect, good battery, no lag no nothing just prefect.
I been waiting for a Bell Canada Android 2.3/2.3.4 ROM but it seems we don't even have android 2.2.1 in Canada which is sad really. The ROMKitchen looks like is revamped and stable again and we got some good custom kernel's (speedmod w000t), i just want to make the jump but worried since there is no official CSC or Modem for Bell Canada and Android 2.3/2.3.4. In the ROM Kitchen i can see they have JL2 which is great but no CSC, so my fellow Canadians:
Are you on Ginger?
Having issues?
What ROM/Kernel?
Whats the battery life like?
I really like the Kitchen due to customizing it to fit my needs, any Ginger Canadians using DOC ROM?
Like i can get a full 24 hours out of my battery and i'm happy with that anything less is unexceptionable (that with very heavy usage), i have never seen the phone lag or freeze like the phone is at the prefect state and i would hate to have a half working battery draining ROM.
been running GB in various forms for some time: presently using JVP which appears to be the best iteration with the fewest inherent bugs. Brotuck has an excellent ROM and Damian's kernel is fast and stable even though he still has it labelled as an alpha.
I have tried the various modems and the various fixes out here for the 850 band, but find the KC1 modem to still be the easiest and best fit for Canadian use and it was the last official Kies upgrade from Bell -- it fixes some US compatibility issues over JL2.
No CSC as there is no official Canadian release as you point out: doesn't affect the use of the phone at all -- CSC just shows up as "unknown" but the phone, text and all other features are unaffected by this, just Bell bloatware not present which is a blessing.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Oh, yes, battery life on the rom/kernel combination I use is outstanding and speed is awesome, very smooth and very stable.
Did use the kitchen before and they have had a resurgence recently: so if you like their options, don't let any worries over GB hold you back.
Running GB now, firmware version 2.3.3 no issues at all yet...
Using DarkyROM JVH v10.1/ Kernal version 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJVH
Had a problem with the modem and was getting poor signal so had to flash I9000UGKC1 and it fixed all my problems.
So far the phone is running phenominal, super fast and super smooth. Battery life is fairly decent so far as well. So far 14 hours with heavy to moderate use and 35% battery left, but as well just loaded GB a couple days ago. Dont have any apps loaded on yet to help increase battery life other than what the ROM came with.
Yeah i been using KC1 modem every since it was released and will be my modem of choice for 2.3. I'm only really worried about is the CSC. I read with incorrect CSC you have issues with text messages, 3G, and MMS. I could care less for MMS but i have used it in the past so would like to keep it if i could. I know if 3G and text messages where not working you guys would not use it but is MMS working for you guys?
I had Darky ROM before all seemed fine so i assume its the same when i flash a Europe CSC, any idea which one i should flash? XEU NEE?
I might just hold off a bit till android 2.3.4 is out of testing in the ROM Kitchen and just flash that.

Hi Everyone,
Just got the SGSII from VirginMobile. I know there is a thread about SGSII launching in Canada but I thought that us Canadian owners of SGSII need a thread for news, reviews and any additional information since its officially available in Canada as of July 21.
Looking forward to hearing from all owners about their opinion of the device, mini reviews and any relevant discussion.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
My mini review:
Amazing device. Very responsive. Screen is just awesome. The build quality is very nice, despite some reviews saying it feels plasticky, in my opinion, the lightweight and solid build is perfect for this device. When you hold it it feels like a premium device. Everything works like it should.
Pros:
AMOLED+ 4.3" Screen
Responsiveness
Light weight
8MP Camera
TouchWiz 4.0
Cons:
Battery was acting up for two days (Turned auto brightness off and removed some apps and widgets; it is back to normal now, 10% loss over 3hrs)
Maybe somebody can post the modem/radio file for our phone. That would be great!
Loving the phone so far. Thankful for chainfire's root kernel allowing me to titanium back from my arc. Looking forward to a healthy dev community here

So far, here have been my experiences with radios...
I can't remember my first radio (KE4 of KF2), but it worked better than KE7.
KE7-Works OK.
KG1-Works better than KE7, but I totally lose signal about 4 times a day (need to put flight mode on then off to fix it).
KG2-Hard to say, I'm only using it since today, but so far, it's the best.
I've had mine since more than a month and a half now and I'm very pleased about the phone. It's my 2nd Android phone (I had a Motorola Milestone before).
I just hate touchwiz so much (but not as much as Sense or Motoblur).
What Bell apps are instelled on the phone? There must be so much junk apps on there, mine doesn't come from Bell, but has all of those Samsung bloatware apps, I guess it must be much worst with one that has Bell's apps on it.
If you want to get rid of those apps, you have a few choises...
1) Root and remove them manually.
2) Install a Samsung based Rom that removed those apps (Cognition is very good).
3) Install CM7 (altough there's still no stable release), you'll get pure (well, actually better than pure) Android.

So far, here have been my experiences with radios...
I can't remember my first radio (KE4 of KF2), but it worked better than KE7.
KE7-Works OK.
KG1-Works better than KE7, but I totally lose signal about 4 times a day (need to put flight mode on then off to fix it).
KG2-Hard to say, I'm only using it since today, but so far, it's the best.

i hope its not modified like the i9000m (bell vibrant) compared to stock i9000m

XXKG2 is the European modem file. I'm looking for the UGKG2 (Bell modem file).
I'm sure it'll be released on samfirmware.com soon. Thanks for the reply though, I appreciate it.

Not 100% sure about this, but I've read somewhere that there's almost no difference between the i9100 and the i9100m from Bell. Thankfully it's not modified like the i9000 variant. I haven't seen one from Bell yet, so I'll probably just hop in a Bell store to take a look how different the software is.
Is there any of those Bell apps that could be interesting/usefull?

I may be wrong, but does it really matter? The radios are good for any region. If you ever get hold of a Bell radio, let me know where to get it, I'll try it to see how it goes with a regular i9100.
I picked up a Bell SGS2, flashed the XXKG2 full rom on it that Darkyy posted, then rooted it, flashed Darkyy kernel only from XXKG2, and then the zImage from the CF-Root kernel to remove the yellow triangle.
No bell apps now, and everything works amazingly well including signal and battery life.
There should be no difference in modem files, as the European model and the Canadian one both are the same phone. Both the i9100 and the i9100m have all the 3G bands, unlike how the i9000m and the i9000 didn't.
Just use the full rom that has what you need and all will work fine. I tried flashing a few full firmwares on my i9100m, all worked perfectly fine.
EDIT: GPS locks on also in roughly 5 seconds, indoors, so i don't think you need a Bell modem file.
Network Speeds
How is the network speed performance with Bell/Virgin?
I'm with VirginMobile
At home, I get speeds close to 1mb down and 1.5mb up (download speeds were very disappointing)
But at work (Toronto) I get 7-8mb down and 2mb up
Looks like location plays a huge role.. anyways I was happy when I saw 8322mb/s download speeds..
I flashed the latest stock rom (KG3) and used the CF-Root KG3 kernel.
My network speeds are MUCH better now.

Same here, and WiFi seems to be working better as well. Most importantly for me, the email application doesn't FC when I try to open it and connect to my work Exchange server.
You guys have a link to the latest stock rom? Is it bell's? Or is it just generic?
Thanks for the advice guys! I flashed KG3 along with the appropriate CF and it appears to have solved my GPS issues!

It's generic.
Anyone having issues adding a Google Apps email account after flashing KG3? I flashed the first one listed. Is there a difference between it and the second one?
I just want to make sure everyone knows that 911 does no work on roms that are based off the AOSP, and it NEVER HAS WORKED. You can read a better description on this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385613&page=7#68
The only ROMs that 911 has worked on are ROMs based off of official releases from Samsung. I would suggest for your safety flashing back to a Samsung based ROM.
Went back to Bionix 1.3.1, at least GPS works now. (Yeah I know why it did not work in CM7, just saying that is not too bad going back to a Samsung ROM :/)
E911 doesn't work. 911 works, different.
E911 is if you have no sim card or have no service and can make emergency calls only.
I lived a long, long time before 911 existed and I can't remember the last time I had no service to t-mobile and had to rely on att towers for an emergency call.
I'll take my chances, thank you.
Ohh now I get it I thought it did not work completely now I get it now I understand how having no source code would effect that!

Does 911 calling work on MIUI?
Sent from my Vibrant
Kind of scary that some people are barely now finding out that their custom flashed Vibrant doesn't make 911 calls. I wonder how many other people who don't frequent the forums often still have no clue their phone doesn't make 911 calls.
It still blows my mind why a disclaimer wasn't posted in large bold font in the CM thread when the stable was released.
Anyway I still think they did the right thing to stop support. Maybe Samsung will surprise us with source or a leak soon and we can get support back.

according to your link:
"The same emergency call callback handling that is present on Galaxy S and Captivate doesn't work on Vibrant, and the differences are enough to make E911 fail"
What makes you think it is working on all the I9000 ports to the Vibrant and not just Official Samsung Vibrant Roms if the above statement is true? back to KB5 I guess.
I'm not saying E911 works, but why would it work on a I9000 rom with I9000 framework running on a Vibrant if it's a incompatible framework issue?

As long as I have been on MIUI, I have had to call 911 a few times. Each time, it would not even connect. Luckily I had my wife's phone handy.
My best combo.
Well when I found out that 911 doesn't work on CM/MiUi I switched back to 2.2.
I have been back on 2.2 for a while now and my phone is actually fast without the frequent crashes and problems that came with CM/MiUi.
If you want a fast lag free experience with working 911 I suggest the following semi-stock combo.
(before any of these steps always good idea to backup your nv_data.bin so that you don't lose your imei ever)
1) Flash stock deodexed/rooted KB5, found in the development section
2) Flash the stock KB5 kernel with voodoo lagfix included in the kernel. Also in development section. Make sure you go into recovery and enable Lagfix after you flash the Kernel. Also make sure you disable Lagfix anytime you want to flash something new.
3) Touchwiz is very laggy, so use LauncherPro instead. LauncherPro found in Market.
The above combo has been fast and lag free. 911 works and the GPS works also as best as it can.
+1 on this. I have had same experiences but with different set up. KB5 and Voodoo and am completely happy with performance, speed and stability. On Toxic D9 RC3 Bali X kernel. GPS lock 9 birds down to 10 feet.

Actually, 911 doesn't really work either - you will get no audio during the call and will have to wait for a call back if your phone doesn't actually freeze when your call fails (which also happens sometimes during the 911 call on the Vibrant when using any code derived from our source). E911 is just an extreme case of the same issue. Our advice, go back to a Samsung derived framework for the Vibrant on the Vibrant.

The framework is incompatible with tmo - it works fine on Galaxy S and Captivate, which is one reason it took longer to find out because we didn't actually have Vibrants to test on. I don't know of any AOSP builds that didn't start with our code (CyanogenMod), and therefore it would be safe to assume that all AOSP builds for Vibrant cannot do (E)911 calls correctly. Our suggestion is to go back to a Samsung or Samsung derived ROM that is using Samsung's framework for the Vibrant on the Vibrant.
Thank you atinm. I have appreciated all your work to make our Vibrant phones better. This 911 issue has people spooked. But outside of the CM team (you and coolya). Its not understood very well. I'm dumb sometimes but I can't figure out how this would not affect non vibrant stock rooms as much as aosp roms.

Sorry, I'm slow...still confused. Can someone please answer yes or no if 911 and e911 will work on any i9000 Samsung Gingerbread ROMs ported to the Vibrant? Not sure if the Simply Honey (2.3.4 JVR) ROM falls into this category but I read in that post that 911 was not working -- at least in the August and September time frame.
I'm just trying to find out if there are any Gingerbread ROMs (non AOSP) I can use that will have this functionality because I'm ditching my land line and this will be my primary phone soon. If not, back to Froyo.

why don't you call 911 yourself ?
If your call doesn't goes thru for any reason they will try to call you back, if that's the case then just answer the phone and tell them that you bought a used phone and you were testing 911 calling.
Simple as that, I did it myself and my result varied between asop roms from phone crashing and only solution was a battery pull to connecting but not audio plus new years force close party.

CM7 and MIUI are AOSP and i9000 Gingerbread is international Samsung if I'm not mistaken. Hence my question.
If you are like me, Cyanogen,of works great as media player for Vibrant.... happy with it, never use it as a phone anyways.

old news.. this has been pretty common knowledge for almost a year now. But good job compiling all the info together i suppose?
luckily in the 12 years i've cellular devices i've ha to dial 911 twice.
and even then you can call non emergency and get forwarded to local enforcement based on your Cell tower triangulation.

Most i9000 roms "are" samsung. However if you read the OP of the rom itself you are looking to flash the Dev will usually tell you what source the rom is built off of.
For those interested...a little info on 911.
E911 stands for enhanced 911. E911 differs from 911 in that location information is transmitted to the 911 call center. This is for landline phones attached to a physical address. For wireless call, there are two types of data transmitted. The old standard (and still in use on older cell phones and with some of the newer carriers) was call Phase 1 Wireless Data (WPH1). It was simply the location of the Cell Phone tower the cell phone radio attached itself to. The current standard is called Phase 2 wireless Data (WPH2). This provides GPS location data to the call center. Depending upon the carrier, it can be actual GPS data from the cell phone chip or GPS data triangulated via cell phone towers.
Further more, none of the AOSP ROMS (miui or CM based) that I've tested work with 911. The Cyanogenmod team did the right thing pulling their work. Genesis3 (props to Genesis3!!!!) continues to dig into the problem and I'm his canary. I have personnaly verified that Simply Honey Gingerbread 2.3.4 JVR + Modem JVS works as well as NeoBuddies ICS V7. Other than that, it's a waiting game for source or a fix.
