It was common enough (with stock rom) in my original N1 that I sent it back for replacement. The new one is fine so far.
Rebooting helped sometimes, not others. Rapping a knuckle on the screen sometimes enabled the mic, too. Once I figured that out, I figured it was defective hardware (maybe something as simple as a bad solder joint) and sent it back.
As I was knocking on that glass, I can't tell you how images of my old man beating the hell out of an old television to improve a snowy terrestrial picture came back to haunt me.
LOL. well I'm screwed if it is hardware because I have a rooted phone.
I think the paint of my Nexus S is not in good quality. I got a "paint mark" on the edge. It's pretty obvious, and doesn't feel smooth.
I am wondering if there is any restriction in exchanging the Nexus S. I tried to live with it but found that I couldn't.
You can find the attachment for the paint mark.
i am sorry. but i dont see anything. ur over reacting.
and if its at the back side, its just a cover.
If you mean the mark on the side of the bezel area then yes it is defective. Take back for exchange or refund.
Don't know where you are but here in UK we have 28 days if its a fault.

Yes that's the mark I mean. I reside in Hong Kong and I got this phone because my fd came back from US for vacation. Now I need to have my fd to exchange for me and mail it back =(
I believe BestBuy have 30 days exchange and retun policy.
mines is actually the same :-( refund?
Same? Same location and same mark?

I dont have that. I would get a new model if i were you.

Wow, all that trouble for a mark that's barely noticeable (I can't even see what you're talking about)? Not worth it if you ask me.
Here's a better solution: Buy a case.
Since you're in Hong Kong, is it really worth being without your phone for weeks over this? Not to mention the money it's going to cost to send it there and back.
Got an exchange at car phone warehouse. This is a defect with some of the i think. Ive never dropped or banged mine. Scratched the crappy glass on the screen last night, so kinda glad i could exchange!
That's true i won't be seeing my phone for a while. I have fds who keep traveling from hk to us so cost is not a problem.
There isn't any screen protector and cases in hK yet (although you can find many from eBay, but none of the stores is selling). As i said, i tried to live with it but found that i couldn't xd

I see what you're talking about, but if everything else is good with the phone, I'd probably keep it. You don't want to exchange it and get one with a real problem. Just my two cents. I did something similar with my G1 and regretted it.

Thanks for all your advice.
My fd is leaving HK on next Thursday so I still have time to decide whether to exchange or not.
Btw, is the exchange procedure smooth and easy to do? Bought from BestBuy.
I have a dot on the soft key to back, only visible in practically direct sunlight. Just get over it, no device will ever be perfect. I return a G2 with a defective wi-fi, then I get a new one with a screen that's loose(Dust justs gets under the screen, full of it). Just be happy your device works.
Just curious, does anyone else's phone make a "clicking" sound at the bottom of the back cover; right next to the USB port, opposite of the headphone jack. Try pressing there and letting go. Hear anything?

No, mine doesn't; I've squeezed it several times to check just now. How loud is your clicking? Is your back plate fully snapped into place?

Yup! I have the exact same thing. It's slightly annoying, but other than that one spot, the phone is creak free.

Yes, snapped into place. I discovered the sound when holding my phone upside down at the top and bottom with my thumb and index finger. It's a slight click, not very loud. Just a shame to find a soft spot in an otherwise sturdy phone.
However, my biggest build complaint remains the semi-loose volume rocker. It's just too far out, in my opinion, and too big. It's not terribly loose, but it's annoying to feel it jiggle even slightly when everything else seems so solid.
@nyijedi: I removed the cover and snapped it back in place and the click seems to have gone away. You may want to try that also.
dunno why so many exchange phones just for the slightlest problem... I mean, some exchange phones 4-5 times?!! Jesus.. Ur in HK and u wanna go thru the whole Best Buy process just for a freaking mark no one can barely see???
Is anyone else having trouble checking (turning on) their NFC in the Wireless & Network Settings menu? When I try to turn it on, it won't allow me to check it and says "an error occurred". I'd hate to find I have a defective NFC. Anyone else?
Well, The speaker began making crackly death sounds in my epic. From what I've seen via google search and here on the forums, It isn't entirely uncommon.
I've tinkered with some electronics before so i decided to avoid the whole going back to stock thing and picked up a speaker on ebay and replaced it. Along the way i decided to pick apart the failed bit. Took a few pictures but I am unsure of the cause of problems since i damaged the speaker prying the metal cover off. But I figure that one of the corners of the cone is getting popped inward and not letting the speaker do its thing.
If anyone else happens to have a failed/ noisy speaker and cares to take it apart please take a picture or two. I am simply curious as to if the corners are just creasing themselves inward somehow.

I would have of just gone to sprint. But it seemed easier to me to just get the speaker off of ebay for 13 bucks and have an excuse to pop open the back cover. And I am le lazy when it came to going back to stock. Strange there are no void stickers of any sort on the thing though.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem... Samsung tried to blame the issue on Sprint haha!
But, no I don't feel comfortable taking the speaker out and replacing it... =/ good luck if you can figure it out though!

If I can find a speaker on Ebay, I will certainly give it a shot. This distortion is really bugging me. If I turn it up, it sounds like crap. If I turn it down, I get no ringtone, so I miss calls.
I got the same issue. I thought it was related to eb13.

glad to see im not the only one with this issue. my speaker sound like ass! unfortunately im not hardware savy enough to gut my epic but im gonna try and get my buddy at the repair center to see if he can fix it for me at his place instead of having to flash to stock to get it fixed then reflashing everything.
I always assumed it was an improper grounding issue, not the speaker itself. Different firmwares and ROMS have produced different results, so I have my doubts about the speaker being the issue.
Ya, mine is "blown" too... but it happened one day while I was at work... on silent. I was also kinda thinking it has more to do with software than hardware... but it hasn't fixed itself yet and it's been almost 2 weeks.
Looks like I might be doing the Odin thing soon, thank goodness for TEP.
Well, mine started to sound blown too. It happened overnight, I wasnt even using the speaker. Im farked too because I dont have insurance on this thing. Is this a software issue or what?

Just for the record, if your wire wont attach again, its because the technicians have a special tool to pop in on and off.
If your speaker isn't working, take it into a repair center. If they can fix it in store and it's under warranty, it will cost you $35. If you have insurance, then it should be no cost. The store I went to was cool about custom roms and rooting, was even asking me about it.The store I went to was not a corporate store as there are no corporate stores in the area that do repairs.
Forgot to mention that if they can't fix it in store, they will send to Samsung and Samsung will send a refurbished model. So in that sense, it may be a good idea to Odin.

I was hoping it would be a software issue but no amount of flashing back to stock would fix it. It started when my alarm went off one morning. Started out fine then turned to crackly death sounds all at once.
So far so good on the replacement speaker however.

yup, exactly how mine malfunctioned. I set the alarm, worked when i set it, then woke up to a gawd awfull crackly noise, and the speaker was blown.
Since i don't have TEP, should i just try and buy it and replace it myself or go back to stock and have the techs look at it at my sprint store?
I am experincing the "blowing" or "bursting" speakers, too, all of a sudden. I am on Bonsai 4.0.1, but I experienced that on stock ROM, too. I wish we can find a solid solution to this intriguing issue.

It might not actually be blown!
Long time reader, first time poster.
Ok, here is what I discovered about the Epic speaker. Like everyone else here I had my speaker die the same way, suddenly was distorted at any normal volume and no sound when you turned the volume to low, after awhile it just up and quit.
One thing i did discover was the if I tapped the speaker module it would start working again but blown sounding, so I thought "hmmm, seems like a loose connection". Got bored the other night and decided to take the speaker module out and see if I could spot a loose connector. No, no such luck, so after tearing the speaker module apart and playing with it, I narrowed it down to a bad solder joint in the ?diode? array under the red goo. when i would flex the cable it the speaker would suddenly start working again normally (no distortion, nice loud volume).
Now, as near as I can tell, Samsung is only using 2 leads of the connector hence the diode array (best guess due to the wiring pattern), voltage one way and the speaker plays, voltage the other way and the vibration motor runs. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Unfortunately, I cannot say if this is a permanent fix or not, my diodes appear to have taken some damage due to me continuing playing around with the speaker module while it was on (Either cumulative from running it messed up, or maybe I shorted them while I was poking around; but the speaker volume decreased gradually over time, no distortion though). But I do know for awhile everything was working fine, and my speaker worked like it was supposed to.
If any of you have the same problem, and can manage small surface mount work, this might be a way to save a few $$ or get it working again in short order since the only replacement speakers in can find right now appear to be coming out of Hong Kong with a long delivery time.
Hope this helps someone. Thanks for all the help that you guys have given me over the years.
As in everything in life, YMMV.
Hmm, I did not think to check out the wires while i had it out. I no longer have the broken part so if i encounter the issue again i know where to start looking.
Thanks!
I had the same problem. Thankfully i have best buy black tie insurance.

So i was sitting here on my couch reading some RSS feeds. Played a youtube video and realized my right speaker had stopped working...
My speaker has been working since i got it and just stopped today. I then put presure on the lower right back side of the tablet and the speaker started working. I released the pressure and it failed...it appears to be a fault in the manufacturing process.
I'm ging to RMA mine but I wanted to put this out there for people that are having issues and thinking it might be a firmware thing...its a faulty connection inside the actual device.
Now I have to see if Asus will actually send me one while I use this one or am I going to have to sit here without a pad for a few weeks because of their cheap manufacturer.... i hate RMA processes....
Let me know if you have this issue as well.
edit: I also have the light bleed issue around the bottom and right side of the screen
Bubbled up housing around the bottom as well. I hope asus has changed some of the QA process....
I have this problem also. My right speaker no long works but the headphone and HDMI works fine.
I think the only thing to do is an RMA at this point?? How did yours go?
just got this same problem... let me known what u guys did. Thanks a lot in advance.
Ive noticed today that the bottom right corner is a little loose and not connected all the way. I'll probably end up with the same issue. Im still in my 14 day return policey i may just return it for a new one before it runs up. Id rather not deal with RMAing it to asus to tell me that its not broken

Do it.. While u can. Cause all I hear is Horror Stories about RMA. I think I will deal with one Speaker than Spend additional $30 shipping costs and horrors following that.
yea thats all ive been reading as well is horror stories with RMA. This will be my 3rd exchange, I love the product, I just wish they would make a stable structure
I'm having this exact same problem now.. is RMA the only option here?
Same problem here plz help
none posted what happened after RMA. Still waiting.
You better hope the retailer allows an exchange. Otherwise you have to deal with Asus and in that case you might as well throw the tablet in the trash.
They're probably going to break the device and blame it on you or the courier anyway.
ok first of all my n7 had a speaker problem, the left speaker sounded terrible with sounds coming out of it. so i took of the back and tried a method that was on here which was to slightly press around the defected speaker until it pop in or something like that. any way i tried what is said and it pop in back and now no sound what so ever is coming out of the left speaker. but im quite satisfied with the one speaker. it isn't as load as both together but its close to it. so should i still get a replacement? thats was the only problem i had with me n7.
