Hi all,
I need some urgent feedback from you good folks as I have been given until tomorrow to decide whether to send back my T-Mobile MDA Vario.
On the slide out keyboard, if I press the space/sym button lightly in the center it clicks once and if i press slightly harder it clicks a second time...
Is this meant to happen? Does anybody elses do this?
Haris
PS. If I press the button on either side there is only one click
Mine makes a sound like it's clicking twice but actually only does one click.
Thanks for the prompt reply sunseaker!
When you say 'does' one click, do you mean in the software? So you only get 1 space in Word even though you're hearing/feeling 2 clicks?
Yeah,so do I.I feel it was twice. But actually,it's only one space appeared in word.
That's what's happening with me, you can feel two clicks in the center but one if you press on either side, just one is showing in word.
So all Wizard Keyboards behave like this? At first I thought it may be something like a two function button ie. light press for normal space harder press for something else.
I looked in the manual for some kind of explanation but there's no mention of it...
If they really are all like this (keep the feedback coming pls) don't people find it really annoying to feel a double click happening on a frequently used button when all the other buttons function normally? (ie. click once)
The reason you get two clicks is because there's two of those little contacts below the space key - the reason for that, in turn, is that the key is pretty wide. These two contacts are on the same 'paths', though, so there's no differentiating a spacebar press on the left from one on the right.
The reason you only get 1 space is because, normally, if you press in the center in such a way that you happen to 'click' both left and right, it will be in such a short interval that the repeat is ignored. Try pressing any other key, such as a letter key, really fast (so not 'click click', but rather 'c-click') twice - it will also only enter the letter once.
It's not too annoying for me, as I either press it on the left or on the right, depending on which thumb happens to be nearest the key
Cheers Ze!
I thought it might be something to do with 2 contacts under the space bar.
Since this is not a fault (design fault maybe ) I'm happy to aim my thumbs to the corners and will rest assured that I don't have a dodgy Vario
Thanks to all that replied - I can keep my new toy!
Essentially, I'd like to get even more buttons. With the capacitive screen, we have the 4 hardware buttons for Home, Green & Red and the hybrid back/ok button. There's the 4 directional 'hidden' buttons and of course, the center select buttons.
When you count the scroll/zoom surface, that's 9.
THEN, add in butler and you get 4 more via swipe actions.
I'd like to see a double tap application - or possible extension to butler?
So if you double tap the Home, send, end or back buttons (not press - TAP) you can assign a link or application to them.
Also, is the center button also capacitive? put your finger on it and lights for the other buttons will come on... If so, can we turn it into a 'mouseball' of sorts?
Anyone else see a use for something like this?
GScroll has that.
You can assign programs to launch when you double tap one of the four button locations.
And it can emulate cursor keys left/right/up/down by swiping part of the capacitive area.
And it has a task switcher that activates on a certain capacitive-motion but I can't figure it out how to make it work ok .
The app is 5 bucks from Mobihand, and get the latest beta from their own forum.
Flippin sweet! Thanks!
Anyone know if the center button is capacitive?

yes it is..
OK, so is there any app that uses the center button like a sort of 'rollerball' type input? It could even work like the 'nubs' on the old Toshiba, IBM & Lenovo laptops

I haven't seen an APP for that, but the last beta of GScroll has a mouse pointer activated by the center button and is controlled by touching anywhere on any of the capacitive pads. I don't use is much though. Otherwise it' a great idea, just not sure it would work that well. Who knows?

Aw the days of the good ol' Think Pad clitoris, haha.
I have a question on how to make this phone better... I've never used the iPhone really, other than to jailbreak it for my fiancee. Now that I have the Vibrant, I noticed ridiculously difficult it is to place your cursor in a particular spot. You can't use a stylus, there's no "magnifying glass" like the iPhone has, and there are no arrow buttons on the on-screen keyboard (as there was on my HTC Touch Pro 2). Basically, it'll take me 5-6 taps (or more) to get the cursor where I want it.
Is there any app or hack that can fix this?
If you are using samsung keyboard, then keep pressing the "123" button until more controls shows up, theres cursor control.
You can flash or wait for froyo release it comes with a cursor
Thanks to both of you. The 123 option is a PITA, but it's something. Good to know that Froyo is gonna have a cursor. Thank goodness....

I couldn't the 123 option to work. When I press the 123 button, I get four pages of symbols... no directional cursor movements. What am I doing wrong?
If you are using the Swype keyboard, drag your finger from the Swype info button (bottom left corner) to the SYM key (next one to the right). Several cursor control options there, plus a few other handy items.
Also, if you didn't know, dragging from the Swype info button to the "F" key will switch the keyboard into a number keypad.

You need to hold 123, not just click it.

Awesome. Thanks for the help. It's exactly what I needed. Will hold me off until Froyo.
Alternativelly you can use the HTC_IME (which is the HTC keyboard) and set the volume buttons to work as up and down. Pretty handy when you want the cursor to skip a few characters. Though indeed the lack of cursor buttons always visible on the keyboard is kind of irritating especially if you come from an HTC.

I actually went through the process of installing the HTC keyboard, which I loved on my Touch Pro 2. It was laggy as hell and basically unusable. I also did not notice any directional arrows.
I've been meaning to try that keyboard again, since I did the one-touch lag fix. I'll do that right now.
**EDIT**
I can't find the option to use the volume buttons to move the cursor. It's also nowhere near as fast as the Samsung keyboard. Not sure why, but I have to seriously slow down my typing to get it to recognize each key press individually. I was hoping it would be better once I did the lag fix. I guess it's a separate issue...

Hmmm I do not have any lag issues with the keyboard.
Have you tried Calibrating it? That option is in Settings (within the program, activated by long pressing the language toggle key)>Text Input>Calibration tool.
Unfortunatelly, indeed, there are no directional arrows in the layout.
The option to set the volume buttons is in Settings (again, within the keyboard itself)>User Interface>Volume Keys.
EDIT: I don't really have any opinion about the default samsung keyboard as it does not support my language (go figure lol) so I have never used it.
In general I like my Tab2 10.1 but it seems like Google expected people to hold the tablet in their left hand and yet have their left thumb available to hit the BACK button; I can't do that. Instead I hold the tablet in my left hand and constantly reach across with my right-hand to press BACK. Is there an alternative UI with all the controls on the right-side? Would that be a launcher?

Yes. Aokp allows you to make your own navigation bar buttons. Check the development forums here.

I'm Glad I'm Not The Only One Thinking That, I Bet The Designer Was Left Handed
Just got the N4 yesterday and love it but for one really irksome thing -- that the back button, which I use a lot, is on the left while the "running apps" button, which I don't, is on the right. It's a big phone so having stuff as near as possible to the bottom right-hand corner is key to one-handed operation (for righties, of course). So when I'm using Google Reader, the back button is at bottom left, and the "Up to category list" button is at top left. Really slows things down.
Am I the only one annoyed by this? Is there a fix short of a new ROM?
A rom may allow you to swap the buttons around. It doesnt bother me I hold my phone in my left hand a lot.
That was a big reason why I decided to root and go to an AOKP rom. Back button on the right side now and I'm so much happier.
It bothered me at first when moving from a Galaxy S (back on right side) to the Galaxy Nexus (back on left side). Got used to it after about a month though.

Never noticed! But I prefer to get rid of them for the screen real estate.
It's more of a design choice rather than a pragmatic decision. Back on the left makes more sense. Some apps move the screen to the right when they go back, so tapping back on the left side and having the screen goes left makes sense thematically. I came from a Galaxy S which also had a right-side back button, and I have accustomed myself to the left-side back button with little effort. It fits the flow of apps better.
However, I'm strongly against the removal of the Search button that started in 3.x. I used Search for many apps, and it was an amazing shortcut. Fullscreen browser? Press search and you got access to the URL bar. Looking for a contact? Search button. Want to do a search in a file explorer? There's a familiar button for that. Recents should have stayed as a long press of the Home button.

I disagree with long press on home as recents. Many android noobs didn't even know there was a a "alt tab" in Android until they've heard it from someone or was told by someone.
It's more intuitive when theres a recents button. As far as search, it's supposed to be on the top right of an app same with the legacy menu. On contacts, its on the bottom left.
IMO they should go back to the 4 capacitive buttons. Menu, Home, Back, Search. There was NOTHING wrong with this setup. Search was arguably the weakest one but with Google now, I'd say it's just as important as the rest of them. I get the fact that not all apps will have Menu, but Home and Back are just about universal, and Menu is used quite a bit too. The capacitive buttons free up screen real-estate too. I don't like styling things just for style's sake.

That's the app's fault for not implementing the menu button on their app, regardless you have the legacy menu button the bottom right.
If you don't like it then install a custom ROM and change the navigation bar to your liking. It's simple as that, no reason to debate about this and how it should be on stock android.

I have, and I like my current setup (Menu, Home, Back). I'm just saying that I'd rather have the 4 capacitive buttons back.

If only recents was actually comparable to Windows' Alt+tab. As it is, recents is no more useful to me than it was in Gingerbread
The best button choice for me would have been, in the order, BACK, HOME, MENU. You need to go to settings? Just press the "menu" button. Need to open recent apps? Just press and hold the "home" button. Simple as that.
It was all so much more consistent when the menu button was integrated in the system. Now you have to go and look for it in a place that differs from app to app... jeez, I feel like I'm holding an iPhone.
No menu and a dedicated, invasive multitasking app is a double step backwards for me.

I agree that design-wise it makes sense; the aesthete in me would take issue with a left-facing arrow button sitting on the right side, which sort of looks like it's telling you to press the button in the middle. I just think that these larger phones should design where possible for one-handed operation (and have a lefty mode too!)
note: by 'one-handed operation' no, I don't mean I'm watching porn
