I've have a 16 GB Sandisk Cruzer usb drive that I'm trying to use with my dock but I can't get it to work consistently. Here's the problem. It recognized it twices and I have plugged it in and takes it out many many times. I don't know what the key is to make it recognize it every time. I've tried undocking then redocking it with the drive in and nothing. I must have done something magically the two times that it work
I'm having a similar issue with the same stick. Once I get it to work, after removing and trying to use it again, the notification for it'll appear and then disappear just as quick and it's not under 'removable'. I have to reset for the tab make it available. Reformatting it (FAT32) didn't help.

What file system does the usb drive use (FAT, FAT32, NTFS)?
Mark.
Fat32 is the most used format around here, if i remember right, from several posts.

Remember Honeycomb is still in VERY early stages of release. Im sure everything will be fixed in time either by Google or xda devs
Mark.
If a device isn't being recognized consistently, it's probably Honeycomb at fault.
Like Mark said, it is still new... And it was rushed, too.

Some people are having no problems with cards and others can't get anything working. I guess there is some dependancy on the make of card, file system used and the time of day

I've got the same Sandisk thumbdrive, I've created just a single FAT32 partition on it (got rid of the U3 partition) and when I plug it into my dock the light on the thumbdrive illuminates but I never receive any indication the OS sees it. I mean, should I expect to be able to see it in File Manager? What exactly are you guys referring to when you say "it recognizes it"?

Just like with a microSD or a dock, on the lower right side, notification of the connection should appear and when it does, you should be able to access the stick either there (like with the microSD) or through the file manager.

Thanks, that makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that Honeycomb on the Transformer just ignores this thumbdrive, other than providing power to it.
But I just tried a 2GB mini-SD card inside of an adapter inside of a Lexar Jumpdrive and that did work. So I guess it's a Sandisk thing...

I have had the same problem as most of you. Here is an semi-HONEST answer from HTC..........
"Dear Customer,
Thanks for your email regarding your P3600.? The issue you describe is something we are aware of and are currently in the process of rectifying.? It seems to be linked in some way to the latest updates to Windows Mobile 5 and as such we have also enlisted Microsoft's help in solving this.? It seems that the device is accessing the memory while it is in an idle state.
We are currently still investigating the matter with the help of our engineers in Taiwan, but in the meantime, to workaround the problem you can set the device to turn itself off after 1 minute in the power options, then let the device turn itself off instead of pressing the power button.
Once we have fixed the problem, I have no doubt it will be released in some sort of ROM update in the near future.
Thank you for your patience in this matter. "
Although they blame it on someone else, as usual, they are aware of this problem. I have not heard of this problem in the TyTn and it is basically the same
I'll try this. Thanks for the info.

Ok now I know why I never had problems with my miniSD card!!! That's exactly my configuration! And 99% of the times I let the phone turn itself off after 1 minute without pressing the power button....
That´s just stupid i always press the power button and no issues from this side, had them with a kingston card but not with my actual sandisk.
cheers
Same here, I always use the power button and use a Sandisk without issues.(never tried other brands)
Apoc and fluke, your logic is flawed. Just because you don't get the effect with certain cards doesn't mean its not broken.
How about this scenario:
auto-turn of always works (card independant)
power-off fails on some cards (like Kingston)
Clearly your experiences do not contradict their explanation
Sorry, but I'm just supplying user-feedback, that's what happens with my trinity+sandisk. I'm not supporting X or Y's logic.
The "auto turn off" trick doesn't work for me. I have a takems 2GB minisd card.

I am using a Kingston 2GB mini SD, and I don't have that problem...yet.
I have a Kingston too 2GB no problem in the phone. However, when I transfer mp3s from my dell laptop (with built in SD card reader) I get I/O errors (I've reformatted, and tried with other SD cards that have no problem). When I transfer to the card over activesync through the phone i have no issues... it just takes a year to do it. Any one else?

Hello all, Dutman here. My g1 works flawlessly and it is rooted(JF 1.43) but I seem to have a problem. when I connect it via usb the LED lights up and it shows me it's charging,, but it doesn't ask me to mount files or the USB in general. This could be due to the fact that I am missing the little usb cover piece, the one that is like really bendable, it sort of fell off. I don't have that anymore, could that be the problem in why my G1 isn't syncing?
Try rebooting your phone, i found sometimes with JF firmware for one reason or another the mount does not work after long periods of use... probly nothing but worth a try. If you are using a Windows 2000, XP, or Vista computer, it should just work automatically so my advice would be to try it on another computer to determine if your computers the issue.

Not likely. Power cycle your G1 as suggested by crackmunky and verify that your USB host controllers are functioning correctly within Device Manager.
If you are using a USB hub, try plugging directly into the PC. I've had no end of trouble syncing windows mobiles in the past when connecting through a hub.
Trouble syncing
Okay, My G-1 is connected through the USB 2.0 cable directly to my computer and it is not recognizing it at all. I open the My Computer link, and it says that there is a Mobile phone. And it has a removable hard drive thing. But I click on the removable HD link and it tells me to insert a disc. And I click on the phone, and it is telling me there is nothing there. Please help, I would really like to sync up with my PC at home so that I can add music and tones to my phone.
OS is Windows XP SP2
G-1 is Firmware 1.1
does the phone show that there is an SD card in it?

If you look at the taskbar on the top of the G1 screen, you should see the USB icon up there on the left. Drag that taskbar down (same as you drag your Menu up) and you should see a bar that says "USB Connected". Click that bar and you will get an option to Mount your device.
I had the very same issue when I first got my G1. It took me forever to realize I could drag the top taskbar down.
When I open the SD Card cover on my phone the system unmounts the disk. I suspect that it has everything to do with your missing dust cover.

I bought mine retail the week of valentines day, maybe it is a different version. I'm running the stock ROM 1.1, I didn't get it OTA in a timely fashion so I forced it. Three days is fine for a spread, but "by the end of the month maybe" is stupid.
Just thinking if it was just me or if anyone else annoyed by the sheer number of button clicks required to mount your phone as a USB mass storage device....
First you plug it in...then you get the "Charging/USB Mount/USB Tether" message, choosing one gives you the mount as USB to turn on.....then another for a confirmation....
Don't you think it should just be a single button click?
Also is USB SDCard transfer speeds really slow for everyone else (versus the pulling the card out and putting it in a card reader).
I'm getting 100-500KB/sec versus 3-6 MB/second write speeds when I use the USB mass storage support.
Be thankful yours works. I have to do a battery pull and reboot to get mine to go into mass storage

One of the very few things I miss about my old Windows phone was how easy docking was and how much you could do with the phone when it was docked.
And I also agree with the second poster, because these Samsung drivers are so flaky that sometimes my phone is recognized, sometimes not. Sometimes I get a popup saying it's connected at USB 1.1. speeds, sometimes it requires a phone and/or computer reboot to get it recognized and on a couple of occasions it has required me to reinstall the drivers.
I don't mind the number of clicks at all...I just wish it would work. For some odd reason it doesn't work for me anymore, frustrating. It doesn't recognize the device ( no, it's not the cable as it has worked on another computer with the same OS using the same cable...I've also done driver re-installs, etc.)
Well in di18 all you had to do was plug in ur cable and when the samsung notification thing popped up you just hit usb mode and it was connected. Now you have to do that, then hit the mount again for it to go and it takes forever. Its annoying but hey what are you gonna do?

It can absolutely be the cable. I had the same problem. It started with my laptop not recognizing the phone, but my desktop and my wife's laptop were fine. Then slowly the other two computers began to not to recognize the phone anymore. Finally, I got fed up and ordered a nice cable for a couple bucks from amazon and it went back to working perfectly everywhere. The original cable still doesn't work in my laptop and works 1 out of every 50 tries on my desktop. That is proof positive that the cable can be the issue and may even cause the phone to work on some computers but not others.
I hate it too!
.....and not because I am LAZY or SPOILED....
I hate it because it is COUNTER-FUGGIN-INTUITIVE....How many confirmations are needed before we actually get to DO what we want to do?
I guess some people in this thread would mind starting their cars with a crank handle either....LOL. Or maybe they GET UP and walk across the room to change the channel on their TV.....

It takes 2 clicks instead of 1 to mount the sdcard. Are you seriously comparing that to starting a car with a hand crank? If you really want a decent car analogy then lets compare it to starting a manual car by having to press the clutch and then turn the key. This isn't done to waste 2 seconds of your time, it's done because they want to make sure the car wont move and cause some damage. Is it really so bad that samsung wants to double check that you actually intended to mount the sdcard.

Yeah. After possting, i did the same thing. Scared me...as i really need it. All working fine.
Probably should always reboot a second time after an update.
Mine isn't recognizing usb keys. Are they supposed to show up under the "Removable" folder? I tried 2 different 16GB FAT32 formatted keys. I plugged in a USB mouse and those appear to work through the usb ports. Am I missing something?
Edit: After my third reboot they were working again. I could have sworn I rebooted once or twice before this a couple days ago when I first updated. Finicky.
This guide/how-to will show you how to fix your non-functional microSD card.
Things you need:-Broken microSD
-Blackberry (tested with a Curve)
That's it!
How I came across this fix and some backstory:Your microSD card might not really be broken. Just follow these easy steps to fix your "broken" microSD. The other day, I tried to flash a ROM from my external SD. In recovery, it said that there was no external SD mounted. I knew that wasn't true, so I took a deeper look in. I also tried to manually mount the SD card in the settings menu. I tried changing my ROM, trying putting the microSD into different devices, but no matter what I did, the microSD couldn't be read. I even considered returning to stock.
I was on Amazon, already looking at some new UHS-1 Sandisk cards. I figured I needed a faster and bigger card anyways. That was when I noticed a Blackberry Curve next to me. I hadn't tried putting the microSD in it yet, so I said to myself, "What do I have to lose? It's already not working. It can only make it better." I put in the microSD and voila! The BlackBerry recognized the card and asked if I wanted to format it. I hit yes and the BB formated the microSD with no issues. I put my microSD back in my T-Mobile Galaxy S2, and guess what? The phone recognized it! Another plus is the fact that with the BlackBerry format, there was only one folder. Normally, when you format a card in a phone, there are A LOT of folders. I just deleted the BlackBerry folder so basically, I had a completely empty card.
Formal Instructions on how to fix your microSD:1. Put your not-functional microSD into a BlackBerry.
2. The BlackBerry should ask to format the card. Hit yes.
4. Connect your microSD to a computer. Open it up.
5. Delete the folder called "BlackBerry" (optional).
6. Your microSD card should now work fine.

4. Connect your microSD to a computer. Open it up.
5. Delete the folder called "BlackBerry" (optional).
6. Your microSD card should now work fine.

If you get *really* desperate, have stuff on it that can't be replaced, and have a few days to burn, you can also try to rip the bits from it using an Arduino (or any other microcontroller).
The easy part is pointing at address=0 and sequentially reading it a bit at a time, byte by byte, via SPI. The *hard* part is interpreting it as a filesystem. I know code exists for FAT32, but I'm not so confident about ext2/3/4 or NTFS. For those, you might have to come up with a way to get the raw data into a form DD can recognize.
The point is, a microSD card is pretty hard to physically destroy. It's one of the few devices we have left that can be low-level read by fairly simple means (in theory, you could probably read it with a 3v DC power source, a SPST toggle switch, two momentary buttons, a LED & resistor, a soldering iron, and some wire... one button for MOSI, one button for SCK, and the LED for MISO. Flip the switch to transition ~SS from high to low to reset the latch, and press away. Ok, maybe debounce it, too...
It wouldn't do you much good that way, but it's an example of just how easy it IS to rip raw bits from a microSD card. No real timing requirements (AFAIK, microSD timing is entirely static). Apparently, this is kind of how the first home computers worked, too...

I didn't really understand all of that but it sounds like it would work, lol.

I don't know. This only applies to people who have a BlackBerry. I guess you could try sticking your microSD in different devices and see if something pops up asking you to format your card.

Well you could borrow someone else's blackberry. Just kidding!
Has anyone found out why only blackberry? Do they have a different algorithm to read flash memory?

More to the point how about doing some basic fact-finding first and finding out what errors the kernel on the device is reporting when it tries to mount the sdcard, then steps can be taken to solve the real problem rather than relying on magic and what some people might term as beginners luck! A good place to start is
Code:
adb shell dmesg
