Please help with fixing root mishap: Wind Nexus S - Nexus S General

Hi, I've been following countless guides on how to root the Nexus S, and I've used countless different root and recovery .img files and none have worked. When I boot the phone, I'm stuck at the Google logo screen and it won't go anywhere from there.
My phone is Wind's Nexus S, GT-i9020... under the battery it says model:GT-9020T

Flash the latest clockwork 3 recovery img and then hold down the volume up and power to get into recovery.
Flash a cyanogen rom or something.
You may need to mount storage through USB in clockwork to copy rom's to it.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App

Make sure you flash a compatible boot image file. I, too, was stuck on the boot screen until I flashed the right boot image file. Some people swear that the data cable that comes in the box is junk and leads to headaches when trying to root. I have not experienced that, but it's worth a try. Uninstall any Android drivers on your system, and ONLY install the Google provided drivers. That's all I can think of right now, when I was trying to root my phone. I hope this helps.

I needed the Google USB drivers from the SDK and the PDAnet drivers. This was on a Windows 7 laptop.
Its not hard to find the right clockwork 3 img file. I did have to rename the img file from clockworkrecovery3blahblah.img to recovery.img
Once that is done flashing, boot into clockwork recovery and choose to mount the USB storage. Copy a cyanogen rom to the phone then choose to install zip from sdcard in clockwork.

Thanks for the responses. It seems I should not have flashed the boot.img at all. I was able to reset the phone to stock using the zip from this post[/quote], and from there did a correct root using 4002-orange.img for recovery and su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip. There are a lot of bad guides on rooting out there, it took hours of searching and some second luck on stumbling across the right post to reset the phone to factory.

I'm guessing you flashed a boot.img to try and root it?
That's what screwed up.
Take battery out, put it back in, hold volume up and power at the same time to get to Bootloader.
Flash the latest cwm recovery, boot to recovery. mount the internal usb,

ClockworkMod Recovery

This update.zip will flash clockwork recovery, overwriting the need/ability to use the stock recovery folder with command in it.
For advanced users only.
v.8 Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?dvleg4oatkfxm7w
The credit for this all goes to Bekit for the biggest step forward on the Gtablet, and obviously Koush for the custom recovery to begin with. Roebeet packaged this update.zip.
Instructions:
1) Unpack download to root of sdcard. (Internals /sdcard, NOT /sdcard2)
2) Start tablet while holding volume + and power. (Let go when you see text come up saying entering recovery)
3) You will see a short installation and it will reboot.
4) Check the install by powering off, the powering on with volume+ and power
5) You should be greeted by a menu with Clockworkmod at the top
i have been using clockwork on my gtablet for several days now. it backs up and restores just like i would expect it too.
well done as usual.. props for all involved.
Works great no problems at all !!!
wishlist:
1. add SDCARD2 to the mount and storage section.
2. ... wait that is it.!
Should I be able to take this file and rename to update.zip, put it in the root of "sdcard" internal space, put the recovery folder in root directory too and then boot up with power + volume up to install this?

Or just extract the zip file supplied in the first post onto the sd card. Everything will go into its place. Then boot from recovery using power and volume+.
So, if I place the cwm update.zip and recovery folder in the root of sdcard (internal), then when I boot into recovery, CWM will show up instead? Just want to know if it really is that simple. Also, if I want to flash a new ROM (Like the zpad one), do I simply place the update.zip from that rom anywhere other than the root of "sdcard", and flash using CWM?
One last question, if I delete the CWM update.zip, is it like CWM was never placed on my g tab?
Am I the only one having trouble getting cwrecovery on the root of sd card? cant get this to run. i am a visual learner and reading how to do all this is helping me very little. if anyone would be willing to do a video or reference me to a link so i can learn to do all this, i would appreciate greatly. this is very frustrating tab stock!
hey this might help you get it installed..
plug your gtablet into your computer, then on the gtablet, click the "enable usb storage connection" button
then on your pc, open windows explorer, and open removeable drive F, the letter may be different for you.. it should show 13gb free on it, and there should be an android folder and a dcim folder.. that's the root of the storage inside the tablet.. it's the same as sdcard.. unzip the clockworkblahblah.zip to the root/top level directory of that removeable drive. then turn the tablet off. and then hold down the volume + button while powering it back on, it should install the clockworkmod recovery manager.. that's about it
jw52637 don't feel bad... I'm a visual learner as well.
uncola,
I followed your instructions and I saw the update install on boot up. Now I'm lost. I expected to see and application named ClockworkMod Recovery or something like that... but I did not. How do I know it is installed and how do I use it to back up my stock ROM? Also, do I remove the "update.zip" from the root directory or just leave it there?
Sorry for the questions but I want to learn how to do this so I can stop bothering you guys.

ClockWorkMod Recovery is the recovery system...so you have to boot your tab into recovery (hold volume + and power the tab up). If installed, you'll get the ClockWorkMod Recovery instead of the stock recovery system. You can make backups, do restores, install .zips, etc... from there.....then "reboot" the system to boot back to your normal system.
Thanks tcrews. I moved the update.zip from the root directory to a saved directory then rebooted holding the volume + key and it booted into ClockWorkMod Recovery. I chose back up and everything seemed to backup fine.
So if/when I install another ROM and I do a restore to the ROM I just backed up I should be right back to where I was at that time. I have used Titanium Backup to back up all my applications and settings and know I would have to restore them also.
I'm just wanting to understand how I can get back to "stock" so that I can get the automatic updates from Viewsonic.
Well i just tried it all again, and all worked very well. Thank you very much
Ok, I'm totaly new to this so please bare with me, having some troubles with my G tablet NOT booting so I cant access it through Windows to install CW to fix my tablet. How can I get the Files on the tablet? I can get it to attempt recovery but no luck. PLEASE help. I'm pulling my hair out here.

There is a physical reset button inside the device, or you can try ADB.
I cant get the recovery image to find update.zip
I have clockwork recovery gtab-cwm-v08 installed and renamed to update.zip in the root of the internal sd but when i boot into recovery it goes to the android screen then shows a triangle with a exclamation point, then reboots normally!
I rooted with z4root 1.2.1
I have superuser permission so am rooted!
Unrooted then rooted again figuring this might help!
Tried a few different clockwork recoveries
have no idea what the problem is! if anyone has any clue it would be appreciated!

Had that happen to me. What I did was run the CWM again into the gtab. Next reboot I had CWM insgtalled and working.
Hope that helps
CWM 0.8 is the one that I used and is working for me. I have the gTab w/the "original" partition scheme, and installed it by the original gTab update process.
If you're using newer CWMs I've read posts in the CM6b4 thread that newer CWM version seem to be causing problems for some people.
Also if you have a "newer" "batch" gTab w/a different partition map scheme you might want to check what the latest info is on the IRC channel, #tegratab on freenode IIRC. Might be quickest to ask for help there anyways, as it sounds like this probably isn't your problem.

A little help.. I400

aSo heres my issue. I installed Rom manager and when I try to apply update.zip it says its not found. So I found a update.zip that was supposed to be for the continuum put it in the root of the SD card then reboot in recovery mode. It applied the update.zip but now when I try to reboot into recovery mode I get stuck there. I have to take the battery out over and over. Any ideas? I cant flash any other roms or do any backups because I get stuck at the recovery screen..
What kernel do you have installed?

Stock kernel.. Everything is stock.
What update.zip did you download?
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
^ that... did you use the one from the post on this forum?
Also, is your recovery stock also? Because that would be why........
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA Premium App
The recovery I was using is Clockworkmod, and the update.zip file that I used was from a website I cant remember right off the top of my head but it said it was specifically for the I400 Continuum. I was unaware that there was an update.zip in this forum. As of today I've uninstalled Clockworkmod and deleted update.zip from my SD card. As long as I dont go into recovery the phone shuts down and reboots just fine. But if i go into recovery it gets stuck there and I have to take the battery out a few times to get it to reboot.
P.S. you help with this is greatly appreciated as I am very new to the Android platform. I have a lot of experience modding and flashing roms in WM6 but none with Android.
Thanks,
Justin
what screen does it get stuck on? have you even flashed odin yet?
Lets make this easy.. Is there a post in this forum that gives all the files and step by step instructions on how to install the recovery and do the flashing?
YAY! I got it figured out. All is well! Thank you guys for your help. I think we can consider this case closed.
Thanks again,
Justin
Ok maybe not... I got through the recovery but now when I try to flash in CWM it aborts the installation and says this:
-- Installing: /sdcard/DL17_clean.zip
Finding update package
Opening update package
Installing update...
Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer supported.
Amend scripting was depreciated by Google in Android 1.5.
It was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the ClockWorkMod 3.0 Gingerbread based recovery.
Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and update-binary) to create working update zip packages.
Installation aborted.
Any ideas?
Download the update.zip from the thread with the CWM kernel and replace the one on your SDCard. I'll get CWM 3.x out eventually then as well, as soon as I have some time to test it and get the few mods out there updated to edify.
Id love to but now its stuck at the 'samsung' screen. when I try to apply the backup that I just made it says:
ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.8
Checking MD5 sums...
Erasing boot before restore...
Error while erasing boot image!
When I try to reboot it just gets stuck at the 'samsung' screen again.
Setup ADB on your computer and download the update.zip from the CWM thread in the Development forum. Open up command prompt and navigate to the directory where the update.zip is located. Boot into Recovery and plug your phone into your computer. Then run "adb push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip". After it finishes pushing, reapply the update.zip and you should be in CWM 2.5.x again. The reason you can't boot past the Samsung screen is because, based on your other thread, CWM 3.x that you tried to use wiped the kernel partition, so it has nothing to boot too. Until you get CWM 2.5.x back, you can't flash anything here via CWM without changing it over to edify scripting.
It says "device not found" Should I be in the stock recovery or CWM? Meaning should I apply update.zip on the phone or no?
You should be in CWM. If it's still not working, you'll need to get an ODIN package that has the kernel in it to flash. I'd post one, but I'm at work and can't put one together.
Yeah it still isnt working. Hey I appreciate all your help I understand you are working. Ill leave it alone for now but if (when you have time of course) you could put that together I'd be beyond grateful. If its as easy as flashing with odin and having the right CWM to flash the DL17 then I think I can handle that but if there are further, more complicated steps to correct this then I may need your assistance further.
Your help is greatly appreciated,
Justin

Ok. 1. What froyo file were you trying to flash?
2. At what point did it fail?
3. You say you outfit in DL mode, andvitvwent to CWM. On its own? I'm not sure that's possible. Please clarify
4. You say it now goes from download to black screen "really fast". Again, clarification.
5. Ifvyou have downloaded mode, and drivers, we can get a read in odin. It may take a few tries. When you say you don't have cwm, do you have stock recovery? When will you have an hour or so to get into IRC?

[Q] OMG!! Help!

Hi, i'm new here so i can't post in the development section.
I have a xoom wi-fi only US version and things have gone terribly wrong. I had unlocked bootloader + Android 3.2 rooted and i was trying to install a theme by using the clockwork mod recovery, but after I did it just kept replaying the boot animation and would not actually start. I freaked out and used clockwork recovery to format user data, cache, /system and the like. Now i can't get off the Motorola screen and i was wondering if there is a way to reinstall (the latest rooted version of) android on my device. Someone please help me, and if you can can you walk me through it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
have you tried downloading another version, put it on your SD card and flash it from CWM recovery?
This forum may be able to help you as well...

i suggest u to flash a new rom instead.
Ok, I have the latest rooted version of android here on my PC.
How exactly do I get it installed onto my xoom? I am aware that you can use adb but can you please go over the exact procedure? (i got it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242524) Thanks that would be very helpful. I just want my device back

ok first off just relax and you posted this in the right section... General or Q&A is where you post questions not Development so you are ok. Now on to your issue, download another rooted rom preferably Tiamat from here. Follow instructions on how to flash the file and that should get you back up and running. Now no need to ask for specifics and wait for it since all OP's in Development will instruct you on what to do.
Also did you make a backup, if you did it would be easier to just flash that. Hope it helps and dont panic. Next time make a backup before flashing themes. Oh yea if you still have the original rom you were running on your sd card just flash that again. If you still have an issue after flashing then do a factory reset wipe in CWM and try and reboot.
So basically your gonna try and flash a rom to see what happens... Any rom you have...
Ok, so i've copied it onto the micro SD card from my phone, there's a lot of other crap in there but I've just put it on into root (not in any folders). Now, how exactly do i install it because the thread just says to "install rom". i'm in clockwork recovery now, what do i select to get it to install?
I have ClocworkMod Recovery v4.0.0.4, and there doesn't seem to be an external sd card option, just the /sdcard directory from within android. Does this mean that I have to find a way to flash the rom into that directory using fastboot or something? If so, pleese just tell me how.

My friend this is why I told you to follow OPs instruction. How did you flash your last rom or get rooted in the first place. This procedure is no different, relax and read the options in clockwork and it with will all come to you. You are installing/flashing a rom so it would be install from zip. Since I may not be on here to help you when your ready this is why I stress reading the intructions. They will give your answers

You're still not helping me, and neither is the other posts; their not specific enough. just tell me how to flash a rom to my /sdcard directory so i can use it in clockwork mod. What commands from my PC do i enter to transfer the .zip???
Hooray!!!
Yay! I've managed to fix my xoom by flashing a stock android 3.0 rom to it. Thank you to everyone involved who took the time to help me, although none of your advice was relevant to the way i fixed it.
For the sake of anyone who was in the same predicamant as me, the steps I took to fix it were:
1) Go to this http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/ link and download the US release (122 mb, down the bottom of first table)
2) Unzip it and extract the contents (should be a set of .img files) to your android-sdk/tools folder
3) Put your xoom into fastboot mode (power on and during the motorola logo repeatedly press volume down until the menu appears in top left of screen, press volume down until you see fastboot, then press volume up, will show starting fastboot protocols)
4) Open a command window in your /tools directory (select tools folder and shift+right click and choose it from the menu that appears in windows)
5) Type the following: fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
6) Once that is done, type fastboot reboot or hold power+volume up (reboots device). you are now done and it should boot into android
IF ANYONE FOUND THIS HELPFUL, PLEASE SAY SO!

I think I bricked my tf101!!

Didn't think bricking was possible but I can't seem to get out of CWM. I was running the honeycomb revolver rom and decided to download ota rootkeeper and then revolver parts. After downloading those apps, revolver parts asked to reboot into recovery to flash the updated zip. Did that and I've been stuck in CWM ever since. I even tried factory resetting. It does the reset but then stays at CWM screen. Won't let me boot out of it. Does anyone know what I should do? Have you tried cold booting into the OS? Power it on using volume down and power button. As soon as you see the white text just release both buttons and it should attempt a cold boot into the OS. This would let you know if you're still able to access the OS or not.
The above referenced post has all the info you'll need to fix your problem. It'll just be easier to fix if you still have access to the OS.

Team Rouge CWM is a different version of CWM. It's a version that will read from both the internal sd as well as the external micro sd card.
Under normal circumstance you can simply flash a different version of recovery but if you're in a recovery bootloop because of the Koush's CWM 5.5.0.4 version. You'll have to follow partio's link to solve the problems.
Now if you can cold boot into the OS, you can move all the necessary files there without the need of ADB. (Just hook TF up to PC and drag/drop files to internal sd.
If you can't get out of CWM recovery you'll need ADB to push the files to to internal sd.

Rogue cwm is just a modified version of cwm. It gets rid of the 100 no options to confirm a flash....and has flash from external SD.
Good luck in getting out of the 5.5.0.4...
I tried cold booting...no go. I guess I'll have to try the ADB method. Thanks for the understanding of recoveries. I have a co worker who is going to try and help me with ADB since i've never used it.
*How will my PC know that I've plugged my tf in, if Im stuck in the recovery mode?(i guess this is probably ADB basics =/)
This is a good thread for setting up ADB.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071584
ADB required USB debugging to be turn on.
Not sure how one would go about turning that on if you can't get into settings.
IIRC you should be able to get into adb through recovery. I'll have to boot into recovery to remember the way, but I am fairly certain it is possible. Maybe through Advanced->Mounts and Storage?
I FINALLY DID IT!! Cold boot way!!

[Q] Cannot mount anything in TWRP, sdcard folder empty

Hi All
I am in the process of flashing Cyanogenmod 11 onto my TF300T however I am in a world of hurt. First I updated to the latest TWRP (2.6.3 -4.2). When i boot up into TWRP it is asking me for a password which I do not know. If I press Cancel i cannot see any contents of /sdcard. Also if I insert a microSD card, again cannot see any contents. TWRP is telling me there is no operating system installed and if i reboot it just comes straight back into TWRP.
I apologise if this question has already been asked but I just cant figure this one out.
What bootloader version do you have? What helped me was to reboot into the boot loader (using volume down+power, has three options RCK, cold-boot linux, Wipe data [dont ever ever ever wipe data]) and select cold-boot linux (the android guy in the middle) and it would boot back into my ROM. If you cant get in that way, you are going to have to use ADB on your computer and use the "adb reboot-fastboot" command. If you get in, back up your files, because you're at the event horizon of losing all your data. If your bootloader is 10.6.1.8 youre going to need to flash the latest asus stock firmware from their website.

I am using bootloader 10.6.1.3. When I cold boot linux it just continually boots up into TWRP.
Whenever I try to run an ADB command i get "error: device not found". I have installed the android SDK, tried to install the USB drivers but no luck (possible windows 8 issue?).
It doesnt matter if I lose all data on it, i dont keep anything really important on it.
I have rolled back to 2.5.0 TWRP and it still asks me for a password.
I've switched over to my Mac now and have been able to push the CM-11 ROM into the sdcard directory. However when I attempt to flash it, it fails immediately with the log saying.

I've switched over to my Mac now and have been able to push the CM-11 ROM into the sdcard directory. However when I attempt to flash it, it fails immediately with the log saying.

If you need help on how to do that just let me know.

cm11=android4.4=new PITs(like with 4.1 to 4.2)
solution:

Ok this morning I have tried the following:
1. Flashed Scanno's TWRP from the OMNI thread using this command:
> fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery recovery.img
2. Booted up into TWRP, again /sdcard is empty.
3. Pushed the OMNI ROM onto /sdcard using:
> adb push omni-4.4.2-20131218-tf300t-HOMEMADE.zip /sdcard/
4. Went to Install and selected the zip then it immediately fails saying:
Unable to mount '/system'
Am I missing something here? From above i see that i flash 'recovery'. Do I need to flash 'system' with fastboot?
no, but maybe your PITs are corrupt. do you still have an older nandroid backup you could try to restore first?
oh just read that twrp asks for password. is that still the case?

Yep it's still asking me for a password.
What are PITs?
I'm not sure if I have a backup. When in TWRP if I go to restore it can't find any. It's like the whole tablet is wiped. Does this have something to do with not having the ability to mount anything?

For me to go to KitKat, can I just flash the OMNI ROM now?
EDIT: Nevermind, I am all back up and running, thanks so much for the help, i was getting a bit worried that I had bricked it!
HELP
So I just tried getting cm11 on my tf300t, i installed TWRP 2.5 and rooted my device, everything went well. I then did a factory reset and wiped cashe. I tried installing then cm11 zip file with no success. I get the message that it failed. And now im on a device with no ROM to boot into and no working ROM to flash on the device.
Since there is a SD card slot on the device, would it be possible to put another ROM on there and then flashing that?
Please help me!

in order to install CM11, you need a special TWRP modded for KK: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48508679&postcount=7
You can copy a CM11 nightly and the TWRP onto a SD card and flash from there, or use fastboot.

Hello, i have a similar problem, i wanted to install CM11 on my TF300T, i downloaded the latest version of TWRP from their site for the tablet, installed via Fastboot and everything seems to be ok, when i try to flash it (via CM OTA) it ask me for the password and it didn´t mount any data, but when i reboot the tablet it just keep loading twrp and i can't get to fastboot nor adb nor APX, so i have no idea on how to restore or boot back to the OS, or i just bricked the device?
thanks

When you restart you tablet, and hold the vol down key while rebooting it will give you a bootloader number: 10.6.x.x.x

that's the point, it doesn't do anything, is like i'm not holding or pressing it, it just show the ASUS Logo screen and in the top left it says that the bootloader is unlocked as usual, i don't think is a wardware problem because it was working the last time it booted on Android

Once it goes to recovery, adb will be accessible. Then follow Buster's recovery method.
