Hi All,
Having severe problem with my S2. My galaxy S2 is heating a lot on charge and if i use it more than 15 min (playing angry birds) the screen and the back part( near the camera) gets heated up and battery part- i am getting only 8hrs (not using Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G services). To charge battery from 20% to 100% it is taking 3hrs.so daily charging the battery twice. i got my first S2 replaced. now even my 2nd S2 is behaving the same way. Dont know wat to Do, very confused

Hey there friend, I have the same issue with KE2 European version. It heats up to 50 degrees when used if charging. I wonder why do they mock us with such unfinished products?? Anyway, I posted here just to see if anyone has an idea. Thanks.
This is not a problem , this a new feature of the phone .
Now with you phone you can boil an egg , make a coffee , warm your self and so many other things.
We are the proud users of an new era of mobile phones .
Seriously now
I am facing the same problem too and it is really annoying , many users reported shut downs too because of the overheating , and this is VERY VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM .

Maybe this is a rom problem , i will suggest you to try the stock rom to check if you are facing the same problem again
My record temp is 55 degrees while charging and using wifi to stream videos..i have tried all kind of roms..stock and others...i know for a fact my device is defective due to some other issues..just waiting for my usb jig to arrive and hope for a replacement..
Cheers.

In the 3 days I have had the device, the back part has gone really really hot once. It happened when I was using the stock web browser to to go to endgadget website, using the 2G, EDGE connection. My browser got stuck and the back part became very hot. I forced the browser to exit, and let my device cool down itself. Afterwards I tried it again, going to endgadget, but using wifi this time. On wifi no such heating issues.
Also from what I have read in the forums, sometimes some apps force the device to use both the processors at 100. So just keep monitoring the CPU usage of the apps, and it a few days you will get to know, which apps to avoid.
My first sgs2 got to 46c + when running kaspersky virus scan before i cancelled it, and that is before i had a skin on my mobile so i sent it back.
I just ran kaspersky again on my new sgs2 with a skin on it, and the temp only got to 34c ,so i wonder if some sgs2 get hotter than others?
EDIT : sorry UK version
Facing the exact same issue with my device dont know the temp bur it gets very very hot , anyone from samsung listening

LoL. That was really funny.
I have the same problem too. With supercurio sound fix in captivate i was overwhelmed by the music but now sound is so awful.
Use Juice Defender. I get around 35 hours of battery life with moderate usage with it!

Many people have had this issue and i am going to put down the facts here.
The GMS radio in the x10 is not.. great.
It suffers in low signal area's lets say 1 to 2 bars of signal or lets say about -80 to -108dB and lower.
It requires alot more juice from the battery and that causes overheating then after a time chipset death.
This is all based on tests done at home.. i contacted my provider and had a petition signed, they fixed the tower and the issue's with my phone's heat are gone!
Now that i have full signal strength the device has no heat or battery issue's at home.
The other problem you can face is only if you flash firmware with a baseband or a separate baseband.
Many times the baseband may not settle correctly.. this will lead to severe heat, restarts, laggs or even chipset death.
Sometimes the baseband will not even be compatible.
#edit
the third problem that i am adding here and almost forgot about...
Charging while under any or even both of these conditions... can be catastrophic.
As sometimes the modem uses so much energy while the INTERNET is in usage that it cannot hold the charge.
There by cuasing major heat.. and you can guess where that will end up.
Switching to 2G instead of 3G can help ALOT, but in some cases this will end badly
As you will get very slow speeds and that causes downloads to be pathetic slow
and even more prone to bad downloads due to the bad signal quality.
The other case may be that you have the dreaded chipset of DEATH if you get above 45*C it's a good chance you have this horrid chipset.
Have it replaced by SE.
#edit END

You may very well be right on the issue of the GSM radio but..... Some earlier X10's were a lot more susceptible to this issue. My first X10 burned out in about 3 months and ran warm all the time, but in standby the replacement rarely gets warm unless I'm in a fringe area that only has edge coverage.
Anyway you don't know what a hot phone is until you've used the HTC Dream. At times you can almost cook eggs on it

So true, but i have been seeing more and more reports of this issue.
And would like to simply give a solid answer to this.
This was not meant as a complaint, but more as a answer so as to end the scourge of that question once and for all.
A overheat that ends in a damaged device = a serious issue.
No worries here
I bought my x10 in march 2010, about a week or 2 after it become available in my country. And I must say that I never had any problems with it, except what all experienced with 1.6 version (slow, laggy, few small bugs).
Overheating was not an issue, even when I upgraded to 2.1 and recently to TripNMiUI (awesome rom btw). Only time I had problems was when I searched for the right rom flashed the wrong file and almost messed up my device.
The battery was above 40°C and went to 10% in like 3 hours Now about that GMS thing... at work I have almost all the time 2 bars of signal (see attachment, was at work from 5am to 2pm) the red bar is 1, orange 2, yellow 3....
and blue lines you see is when its scanning. Sometimes I lose signal for maybe 1 or 2 hours (and that sux) But I cant show you phone temp (dont know how), but it is almost never above 30°C , except when I play games and I do quite a lot
So after more than a year I still have original battery and lasts for 3 days tops, but usually its around day and a half. And I love my X10

It depends.. the heat is mostly created from using the GSM radio in these conditions. such as online usage.
Games are not the problem unless they make constant heavy use of the internet.
Also what was the ambient temperature when you are testing?
Well I do play cestos, and was playing pocket legends, both require constant internet connection. But the temperature still didn't go above 35 (was quite warm). You mean rom testing? I mostly try out the nearly finished roms, so never had any issues with rom functionality or temperature. Except when I tried z's alpha kernel. Then it was around 33-38°C. Now that I think about it when I'm flashing new rom it always goes above 30, but after some time drops down.

Yeah thats the BB settling in nicely.. sometimes a few restarts or even the "white led of WTF crash" seems to sort it out.
averagely my phone will idle at 30 to 35*C but in usage it can climb above 40*c often.
My old motherboard reached a record High of 57*C just playing "robo defence" or even Hawx...
But here's one more test for you.
Once you need to charge plug it in and start using the internet for about 20 mins in a low signal area and watch that battery drain and the heat go thru the roof.
I never had this issue and i only get 1 to 2 bars only and it never went above 34 which is cool. Dunno about u guys but the only way i can overheat the phone is when playing heavy gunner and listening to music at the same time and the battery heat reaches 38 and it still works 100% with no trouble.

These days on WB's rom.. i can play quake 2 death match online "with stencil shadows enabled" while listening to dimmu borgir" with no issue's..
but if i was on stock 2.1 or even the old motherboard.. forget about it.
And trust me many do have this issue.

That's the same conclusion I came to.
When I was using the internet, my battery temp shot up and the phone would restart at 41-42 degrees (stock 1.6)
I got the motherboard replaced under warranty and I've never had a problem with it since

But it still has a effect on the phone.
But how many of us still flash roms or basebands?
Some versions of the board are way more unstable.. to be honest you have the most stable x10 i have seen out of the 13 i have seen here around me.
Also.. did you do the charging stress test?
It's more than just a single simple issue such as heat, it effects the battery life. "when the radio has to boost the signal"
And to be honest out of all of my phone this is the only one that loves to often drop my calls in bad conditions.
noob question coming: how do u do charging stress test? is this something like you test how long the battery lasts?

I posted it earlier.. lol. no problem.
Just go to a area with bad signal "low as in 1 to 2 bars", wait till the battery is getting low.
Start charging it and then use the "market or anything that constantly uses the radio and cpu" constantly for about 20mins while charging.
Watch the heat go up and the battery go down.
Also please note that if the ambient heat is very low then your phone should be reading much lower..
Not all of us get snow on this planet, some of us get heat stroke in the winter.
will try at work tomorrow, since i always get bad signal there.
Hi guys i know there are lots of similar posts about battery life etc but cant find the answer im looking for after a search of this forum as all answers seem to be on rooted devices, she does not want her x8 rooted and im really getting it in the neck for upgrading her in the first place lol.
My girlfriend recently got the 2.1-update 1 via pc companion and thats when the battery problems started. The battery drain problem has actually been getting progressively worse since this. This morning (after yet another full night charging 100%) after 30 mins of getting up today the battery was down to 83 %. I have already uninstalled maps updates, not that she ever used it anyway.
So my question is : is there a solution to this without rooting and/or having a custom ROM? becuase she making my life a misery lol.
Thanks in advance guys and sorry for the similar post

Well, 1st thing as Dx said. reboot after using wifi, 3g, music. reboot to make everything fresh.. but there's no other way to save battery without rooting I think. because I helped my gf installed a custom ROM for her and she said that the battery life changed, and it's way different than a original ROM. How come she doesn't wanna go custom? Sorry for my bad english.

Nah, rooting makes the difference. IMO Froyo ROMs have good battery life.
Well i think she might well have to go custom because the battery life is a joke now, nearly rendering her device unusable, think she just frightened cos i did her pc companion update and kinda blames me for the crap battery now, il have a read around the x8 forum on how to root.
Thanks everyone, apreciate it
Just try to keep off all things you don't need: Wifi, Bluetooth, Synchronization, 3G. also unninstall apps you don't need and do not use app killers to save RAM.
I think that is all you can do without rooting.

My friend, less RAM is actually a good thing. I've read through the web. just don't auto kill ALL the apps, kill those apps that when it doesn't look right or freezes. The more RAM you freed, the more battery it will drain. Serious.

I'm just a noob trying to help.
use a task killer and disable all what you don't need like bluetooth, data traffic, gps and wifi. yes i know my english is bad^^
disable wifi, gps, bluetooth and data traffic. stock 2.1update rom should get you about 3 days with those disabled. any apps that need them will ask you to switch them on again anyway. It's a little annoying to get used to at first especially when you're used to a fone that lasts a week without charge so I can understand how she feels especially if she only wants to text and do a few calls.
If you don't use wifi, 3g gps and rest of the s**t you should probbably buy a dumy phone.
With some "normal" usage you can be happy if it lasts for a day/day and a half.
2-3 is really success.
You do get a charger in the box with the phone you know?
Use your phone, stop wasting time on battery monitoring.

yeah but the idea is it's a MOBILE fone.. You dont want it plugged into the damn socket all the time!
If you need to use the GPS, WIFI etc. the app will ask you to switch it on so wheres the harm in turning it all off until it's required if it saves having to plug the thing in every day?!?
Nobody stated you should keep all the functions on.
But it should be understandable that, with some "normal" use, and by normal I mean regular texting, phonecalls, check facebook/twitter, refresh weather app, read mail and some news maybe you can't expect your battery to last 7 days like on dummy nokia.
Besides, you all forget that your biggest battery killer is the screen.
And another thing I noticed; when LED starts to glow green, your battery isn't fully charged. Check phone status. It becomes green after passing 90% I think, or so.
And the second thing I noticed is a HUGE differenc when charging the phone while it's on, for a hour and a half when the battery metter reaches 100% and when I turn it off and leave it charging over night.
The "night" option proved to be a lot better (battery lasts longer, doesn't fall so fast) + Every once in a while it is good to fully discharge the battery and then fully charge it.

Yeah, but that mobile phones have long since ceased to be just phones.
Switch off everything you can : wifi, brighteness, gps etc. Also you can make a profile "screen off " in setcpu and set it to 122mhz . it will save you a lot of battery! It drains just 1% after 5 hours ( but i didnt use my phone) . Hope it help.
Oh yeah and use the app called " fast reboot " it is so good is well and it speed up our lovely x8
When i used these things , my phone lasts in a week or more of.course i nearly didnt use my phone.

Seeing as I don't have enough posts to post over in the development forum, I thought I'd hijack this thread.
I installed this rom last week and at first, the batter was brilliant. It lasted for three days but now I have to charge it twice a day. I have bluetooth off, wifi off more often than not, brightness down very low.
The phone was 5hrs on battery and was down to 44%.
Cell Standby: 35%
Display: 20%
Phone Idle: 19%
Launcher Pro: 13%
Anyone have any ideas?
I also experienced the same problem ... especially with the overclocked conditions
hey guys i m having abnormal battery health...
battery ends in an hour..
nd it turns off in a very strange manner .. it nvr goes 0% wen it shuts down.. it turns off drctly from 80% or 50% ..
so i think it is a hardware problem.. may be it is d battery.. but i hav to b sure.. coz my battery warranty is not anymore but the handset warranty is..
PS: removing battery stats via cwm dsnt give me any notification.. it that ok?? or that means it s not wrking..
try to wipe battery stats with titanium backup or some other program (needs root i think) then fully charge and calibrate with battery calibration.hope it helps
DDJP4 is even poor... within 1-2 hrs after charging my phone and keeping it idle also makes batt level fall to 80%.. backup is hardly 10-12 huous.. battery calibration app did not help also but it actually work on other ROMs.. completely lost with this batt issue for moths now.. actually lleft with no hope........... :'(
try with kyrilos or sumee rom !!
Undervolting works wonders.

same with me fon suddenly switch off between 80 to 50 % battery and darining very fast during 3g or even 2g data on. it goes from 100% to switch of within 20 minuts, i think it is not hardware problem
switch to 2g and you solve that problem

i trd stock roms.. used old roms & kernels (coz wen i used them , there was no problem) .. but the problem is still there.. i m quite sure it s abt sumthing hardware.. jst dunno if it is battery or handset.. :/

Well, i'd suggest go for a new battery and try...coz 20mins battery life is not even possible when i had 1400MHz Performance, 2G connection always ON, then also i got around 10-12 hours...
I've got this battery draining issue too. :-\
I have it when the data connection is on. But when it's off, the battery drain is comparatively lesser.

umm actly with ur latest kernel 3-4hours with most minimal usage... oced to 1000mhz..
See if the battery is showing signs of heating.
I would also suggest, try it with another battery (U would be lucky if you have someone else nearby using SG3 whose battery you can try to check).
Normally, battery draining is not so much, especially on Stock ROMs with no over-clocking, other things remaining constant, especially since its a 1500 power batter.
Let us know what you did eventually.

Bro you did not mention if there is over heating in the battery?
Its very strange bro, i hope you are not overclocking your processor perpetually. you may try and for sometime, set cpu profile to something like 200-600 Mhz if using GMOd or 67-667 MHz if using Fugumod.
If its in guarantee period, then flash a stock ROM and give the phone to service centre, they would repair for free (as this type of issue may also happen with motherboard problem which is covered under warranty).
I am actually confused because, with the info provided, it can not be 100% ascertained if its really battery problem

Hi there XDA people,
i sorta have a problem. I am using the NAND version of the HD2, the hyperdroid rom. . its working perfectly. The problem is that the fone heats up. the battery is life is ok but the fone seriously becomes VERY hot. its not rebooting or freezing or dropping calls like said in the other threads, just heating up. I have tried MANY roms but this problem still persists.
Any fixes??
Thanx alot

Is it getting hot while downloading something? is it getting hot while charging? is it getting hot while just sitting there doing nothing with the screen on? is it getting hot while in standby? What do you mean it becomes very hot?
While using your phone for playing games or intense heavy downloading of large files its normal for any electronic device to put off heat as it is running a lot of proccess through the internal electronics. If its getting hot while just sitting there doing nothing or charging or while in standby, then in 99% of the cases ive seen with any phone, your battery is shot. Despite you getting decent battery life, it still can be shot just because its getting hot. Over time your battery life will drop drastically.
Soryy
sorry man for not mentioning, it gets hot while doing anything. When playing games, it feels like an oven. When charging it does get very hot. it gets a little hot while the screen in on. But there r no problems in functioning, i mean no reboots or that sorta stuff. So shot? i gotta get a new one?

Well while playing games it feeling like an oven is actually normal.. and while charging. But while just having the screen on and doing nothing it shouldnt really get hot at all as the CPU is under no load or a very light load. And by shot, i meant the battery not the phone. a new battery is like 12 bucks from ebay. But it seems from what you described to be normal.
However, you may have a process in the background chewing up more CPU than needed. Download a task MANAGER not killer, to be able to view all the running proccesses. I like and recommend system tuner pro but there are free task managers in the market. once you have that filter the list of running services by CPU usage, the most being at the top. Secondly, download a battery monitor tool from the market, but one that has a tempuratrue option. So you can see the temperature values of it under the different situations.
Right now, being wirelessly tethered, with my phone on the window sill (so its getting some cool air from outside) im at 37.0 degrees celsius. Sometimes when playing high res games(temple run) for awhile i'll reach 41-42 but i cant recall seeing it higher than that.
ok THNX alot
Thank you, uve helped me alot. so charging and playing games, getting hot is normal and ive taken notice of the battery moniter programs. Thanx. At standby, it gets just slightly hot, i mean its hot here in pakistan, maybe cus of that? anyways ill buy a battery after a few months maybe. Thnx Alot

Ah didnt realize you are in pakistan, so yes if your phone is in your pocket or its just generally hot out, then well yeah the phone will be hotter. After further discussion, it seems like everything is normal. But just keep it under watch, not that your battery bursts inside your phone lol take care
You can try switching kernels or undervolting to reduce heat.
Thnx for the tip. will try
Hey guys , today when i was using mobile hotspot and my battery was low so i connected charger and used tethering while charging , but after some 30 min when i touched my phone again , it was as hot as a grilled chicken and even my hands were hurting when i touched it , i think it was 80 degrees + , but i didnt had the software to check temps , but it was hurting to touch , so i wanted to ask that if its normal and happens to everybody while using mobile hotspot while charging ? Also my phone was so hot , but it didnt shown any warning nor it rebooted or shut itself off , but i immediately turned it off when it was that hot , but i have to say that i never experienced any such extent of hotness before on this phone , even i did browsing , games and huge multitasking , this was the first time it was that hot , so should i not use tethering altogether ? And if its common issue ? Pls guide me. Thanks.
Edit : I never used fast charging or wireless charging
Any hint guys ?
Anyone pls?

Will get you a temperature. Feeling hot to touch could be anything above ~40-50C as proteins cook at ~42C. This is normal range. 80C is pushing it. Find us an actual temperature first.
Any questions, feel free to ask

Thanks for reply bro , however i used tethering now and installed the app you suggested to monitor temps, but to my surprise, i couldnt get it on that level of hotness even using tethering while charging with apps running , but as i said before it was much hot without any apps running with only tethering and charging.
Phone info app said temp was 42 degree when it was ok to my hand , but i can only guess that if my hand is uncomfortable due to hot phone it should be around 70 ~ 80 degrees , but it was damn hot at that time , i dont know why i couldnt get it heat up to same level , i will report back if i got heat issue again , also i request everyone to see if their phone also does this behaviour. Thanks

Glad it's not happening again. If it's a one off then I reckon dont worry about it. If it happens again, get us a temp and let us know.

Hey bro , just got the issue today , but a little less hot than that but it was still much , the weird thing is that when it was that hot , the phone info app showed 85 to 90% cpu usage , but i was doing nothing , no background apps , and all apps on sleep through device mantainence , and i was only using mobile hotspot while charging , now phone was extremely hot and i did a restart and took screenshot which is attached
Now i dont know the reason of this weird behaviour. After restart temps dropped from 49 degree to 45 according to app , before restart it was 49 degree and cpu at 85% to 90% load , after restart cpu showed normal load and temps began to low , when i took ss it was 45 degree, so i guess in real life it could be more than what app was telling because my hands felt like burning when touching phone , so at previous occasion when that happened and i created this thread , temps must be around 55 ~ 65 degree range , thats really strange behaviour though. Any hints from anyone appreciated
Hey guys , i guess no one has this issue ? Or any hint pls

Well yeah , but i didnt use tethering before and only started using from some days, so i had no experience before that, but that sudden increased cpu usage is strange, btw thanks for your help though.
