[Q] Video scaling quality - Eee Pad Transformer General

I notice on some avi videos vertical lines that are probably caused by upscaling - they are even more visible when using HDMI (because the screen is bigger). I tried several players. In one they were not visible but instead the picture quality was much worse.
I suppose the cause is scaling algorithm used by Tegra2 and there can't be anything done (other than upscaling the videos to 720p and converting to h264)? Or maybe there is a player that can do software scaling or allows selecting scaling quality?

Thanks!
my eyes must be playing tricks on me as i don't see that much of a difference...

Baseline 720p h.264 still not smooth

I know that Tegra 2 cannot handle high profile h.264 video playback, so I re encoded some of my videos using baseline settings and video is still slightly choppy whenever the camera is moving.
Anybody have any idea what the deal is?
The link below is a screenshot of mediainfo with one of the video files in question.

You might try dropping your video bit rate down to 2200. Been encoding using HandBrake with that and they've been coming out pretty smooth.
I have been using HandBrake with the bitrate at 4000 and the videos are smooth
I use constant quality.
But that doesn't seem to be the issue, I just encoded a sample at the bitrate you suggested and it still had slight playback problems.
Here are the h.264 encoding settings I'm using in handbrake.
This is what I got in mine
And here are the samples I made. One is at 2200 kbps the other is at a constant quality setting of 20. If someone could try them on their Xooms that would be awesome. Maybe I have a defective device.
Sorry to make you use Rapidshare, I couldn't get the attachment uploader to work. It would just hang after uploading the files.

Hmmm. I started off with the iPod Legacy preset, then modified the picture size. Looking at my advanced settings, I see it has "Reference Frames" set to 1, "Partition Type" set to "All", and the "Psychovisual Rate Distortion" all the way to the left.
Not sure what any of that really does, but you might give it a try.
I might try encoding something with a higher bitrate just to see how it turns out.
I'm gonna try it, I'll let you know.

It is slightly choppy in the beginning. Here is the .plist file I'm using. I got it from someone but I don't remember. All the videos that I have encode look great.
Grrr, even using the settings in that plist I'm still getting the slightly choppy playback. It's only noticeable when the camera is moving.
If you still have to convert, why not just convert it to mpeg4 (.mp4) with 3,000 kbits rate? It looks blu-ray quality for me. I used either the program Ultra MKV Converter or Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate.
I can playback main profile vids just fine.. level 3.1 mp4, aac audio. I can post up a batch file that I made.. it just requires dgnvindex.. I drop a mkv file and it re-encodes in about 14 minutes.. granted, I do have a 3.9 GHz amd hexacore.
The important thing is the cmd line for the 64-bit x264 enc binary I use.. I can post a short test video for those that would like to try it out... robot chicken ep anyone?
If you could post the script as well as an example video that would be fantastic.
I'm beginning to think maybe my Xoom is defective as the settings I'm using should play smooth on just about anything.
Here is a video I encoded this morning: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MIX4IUTB
I used these settings in handbrake:
--quality 21 --encoder x264 --x264opts no-8x8dct:bframes=0:no-cabac:cqm=flat:weightp=0 --drc 2.0 --markers --format mp4 --maxWidth 1280
media player classic reports this as having a bitrate of 4000. It runs great on my xoom. There is no lag at all or frame drops using the stock movie player.
I have a few videos that have hit 8000kbps, and they run great too. I'm thinking about trying to get it up to 10k to see if the xoom can handle it or not.
I played back your video on my xoom. It looks like it's playing smooth, but there aren't very many pans or high motion camera movements in it, which is where I have been seeing most of the choppiness.
I remoted to my machine at home and got handbrake transcoding another video using your settings. Should be done by the time I get home.
I recently encoded a handfull of movies for my Xoom, one being the new Tron Legacy movie.
I re-encoded a 1080p mkv file
these are the settings I used
Picture Settings:
Anamorphic: strict
Filters:
Decomb - default
Detelecine - default
Target size: 3900 (since the xoom can't handle files larger than 4gb)
Audio tab: remove all but one channel since you don't need multiple streams
Advanced:
Referenced Frames - Default (3)
Maximum B-Frames - 0
CABAC Entropy Coding: unchecked
8x8 transform: unchecked
weighted p-frames: unchecked
option string should be: 8x8dct=0:bframes=0:cabac=0:weightp=0

If you use the exported hb settings make sure you still modify the picture settings as its not stored in the preset.
So I've been messing with this same issue since launch day and I had a revelation two days ago. I got out my iPad and played the same file but using the iPad preset in Handbrake for the encode, just like I have for the last year. The iPad had the same exact, imperfect, slight hitching in the playback of slow camera pans! I realized that because the picture on the XOOM is bigger, and I'm scrutinizing it like crazy with my face up against the screen, I'm noticing it more than I ever had before.
Conclusion: the iPad has almost the same exact video playback characteristics as the XOOM and it's probably not getting any better. I think a lot of it simply has to do with encoders compression capabilities and deficiencies, but I could be wrong.
Still no better with those exact encoding settings.
My device must be defective.
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you will awake the trolls

Handbrake preset export
Here is my current handbrake setup for encoding any HD movies for my Xoom.
I have encoded 10 full length movies and they all play fine... including ones with lots of light changes and fast action scenes. I notice no tearing or glitches.
Attached is the .plist preset. just rename it from xoom.plist.txt to xoom.plist and go to handbrake preset menu and import it.

Video quality

I've noticed when playing video that lines/edges get really jagged and look aliased.
My videos are all native resolution (1024x600) and look fine when played with software decoders (like MX Video Player SW mode) but stutter and/or waste battery when using SW.
I was wondering if anyone has found a way to tweak the hardware decoder so that it produces correct output (not aliased or oversharpened or whatever it's doing here). Any ideas? GL tweak? Maybe some config files in /system or something?
Thanks for any help you can provide. I'm rather shocked at the video quality, and really want to love my KF, but coming from iPad land, I'm very disappointed by the jagginess of sharp edges in video playback (most noticeable on sharp edges/curves/text in videos).

[Q] Image Truncating on a 720p TV

Hello!
i am using my nexus player on a 720p TV but i am not viewing the complete image, it truncates the image, like if the nexus player is fixed at 1080p so the image received through HDMI is 1080p, but the TV is only able to display a part of it, (centered)
i installed xbmc/kodi and it also does not let me change the output resolution, also says 1080p (though it has the option but is read-only)
there's no option to change the output resolution manually
any help?
Currently there's no way to change the output resolution, but I should add that the Nexus Player always renders at 1080p internally, and then scales when it goes to output over HDMI. So, even if you're outputting at 720p, XBMC will report that you are rendering at 1080p.
Have you confirmed via your TV's display info that you're actually getting a 1080p input signal? If you're just getting overscan at 720p, that's expected and all the native apps are (supposed to be) designed to handle a 10% picture loss. Are you only noticing things cut off in XBMC, or are you missing parts of the screen in the rest of Android as well?
I didn't noticed until I started installing apps. all sideloaded apps have missing parts, Chrome, Sideload Launcher, xbmc, File Commander, etc...
WORKED!
thanks xBIGREDDx, my TV settings where wrong, it was set to Zoom instead of scale to fit.

[SM-G9750] [SOFTWARE BUG] Video playback being throttled or not utilizing CPU / GPU?

For owners of the SM-G9750 (S10+ CN / HK model), I'm trying to get some verification here on a possible software issue. I'm trying to play a 4K video file locally (specifically a 4K HDR H.265 / HEVC MKV @ 24fps video, but I believe this bug may apply to all UHD video playback - I'm not sure as I haven't done enough testing) and it seems to be dropping frames and stuttering throughout. I cannot get it to play smoothly despite trying all of the following:
Setting the phone to Performance mode.
Trying different players - in this case, the default video player, MX Player Pro and VLC.
Moving the video player app to Game Launcher and optimizing them for performance.
Forced 2D GPU Rendering in Developer Options.
Changing display resolution from WQHD to FHD.
Moving the video file from SD card to internal storage.
Disabling / uninstalling all apps which use Accessibility Services.
Clearing cache.
Factory reset.
None of these worked. ---UNTIL--- I tried using the screen recorder, from the Game Launcher settings, whilst watching the video. Playback was then perfect! No dropped frames, completely smooth, like it should be. The other alternative was to use software decoding but then colours would appear muted and battery life takes a huge hit.
So what's the deal here? Is the CPU or GPU not kicking in / being throttled whenever I launch a video player app? I'm assuming this is the case as the screen recorder seems to boost playback performance once I activate it. I'm on the June update and I'm not sure if this bug was introduced recently (I never tested 4K playback until now).
Owners of this particular model, could you please confirm if you are having this issue? Try watching a 4K video with lots of action and camera panning movements - that's where you can detect dropped frames or stuttering easily. I could provide the file I'm using for reference but it's a clip from a movie and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to share it here.
Okay since no one has replied and moderators on the Samsung forums are busy removing my posts - try this clip for example, it's 4K HDR encoded in H.265 / HEVC, I don't know if that makes a difference:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/m83ftn7n8d8le2s/Plane_Crash_Scene.mp4/file
Stutters in the default video player app for me. One thing to note is that it's smooth in portrait mode, but the moment you rotate into landscape fullscreen, it starts dropping frames. Now, turn on the screen recorder from within game tools and the stutters are mostly eliminated. What gives?
Another way to compare would be with a video player that lets you switch between hardware and software decoding, like MX Player. Watch the clip in HW mode and then switch to SW - it's choppier in HW mode for whatever reason. Using SW is not an option as the colours are not displayed properly and battery drain is much higher.
Regarding the clip - if it's against the rules to post such content, let me know and I'll remove it. There's a whole YouTube channel full of this stuff, I don't want to link to those as the problem I'm encountering is related to local video playback.
One last try before I sign off Here's another example if anyone has YouTube Vanced (google vanced.app for those unaware). I'm suggesting Vanced because the original YouTube app doesn't let you view at 4K resolution.
Firstly, open Vanced and tap the account icon in the upper right. Go to settings, Vanced settings, Video settings and then toggle Resolution Checks to ON. Refresh and restart the app.
Now open Game Launcher, tap the three dots in the upper right > Add apps and add YouTube Vanced to the list. We're doing this for the screen recording function which I'll mention later.
Once that's done, here's a 4K 60fps clip for you to try. It should be easier to perceive any hiccups with the higher frame rate. And of course, please set the resolution to 2160p (tap the three dots in the upper right) and watch in landscape orientation, since this is what the test is all about:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXb3EKWsInQ
Panning shots work best. For reference, see the one of the step trail at 2:42 in the video. Does it look like it's stuttering or dropping frames intermittently?
Now, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to show the navigation bar (you need the navigation bar enabled to use the recording function) and tap on Game Tools, which is the leftmost button. Tap Record.
While the screen is recording, are the stutters now gone? To my eyes, the video is definitely smoother while the recorder is active. Appreciate any feedback from those willing to try (and confirm if I'm insane or not!) - cheers!
