Applications can somehow reduce brightness more then natve settings can do . For example using cool reader I touched the limits of brightness which are not possible through native settings . This can save eye strain considerably .
Thanks.

can you fix it ?
btw there is also another bug I named it "The orientation bug" since if you lock orientation in landscape mode and press power btn to switch off the screen and then hold the tablet in portrait direction now if you switch on screen the tablet ill lock the orientation in portrait direction instead of landscape .
I'll give it a try later because it's not causing me a big trouble. I got notice the 'orientation bug' but I don't think it's a trouble too. Just hold landscape and log on. The screen also keep locking on landscape

Power Control Plus lets you add a brigtness widget that can be set to a quadruple control - low, medium, high, and auto. You can set the low, medium, and high settings to whatever you want, from 10% to 100%.
Works great lasts a long time B-)

Yes installing cutom brightness widget did the trick

I don't see the orientation thing as much of a problem. But cool read seems to disregard the orientation lock. I can lock it in landscape mode, then lay down to read and it switches to portrait mode. Aggrivating as H...
If you have tasker...you can set the brightness for whatever app you want and then have it go back to whatever dimmest you set.

One thing I've found irritating is that the Vibrant has at least two brightness settings. The systems setting allows you to select "auto brightness" BUT
The browser has its own brightness controls and does have an "auto brightness" setting that I can find?!
The screen is so bright you need two settings for it.
Why is this annoying? Use a different browser.
I agree. I see no need to have a separate setting for the browser. One system brightness setting would suffice...
Is that part of the "Power saving mode" (two below the "Brightness" setting)?
That option says "Save power by analyzing image and adjusting LCD brightness". Maybe the browser isn't playing nice with that function.
For the record... Mine is checked and I see the brightness increase on the browser too. I am not in a position to test it at the moment.
"power saving mode" on or off I can independently adjust system and browser brightness.

There is another brightness setting under the browser opt ins when you load the browser itself
so we got 3 brightness settings
Sadly yes lol

4. Don't forget the tmobile app does some kind of auto brightness too iirc.

The browser has a setting because a majority of websites are white, this is the opposite of most of the phone's Apps, so it makes sense that the browser would be different. If your phone has brightness up and you are reading a website at night, odds are you don't want the bright white light blinding you.

I know this is an old post, but damn! I've been laughing my A$# off for 15 minutes straight after reading that! And it was the first anwser! You are a genius
I just discovered you can adjust your screens brightness by sliding your finger left to right or right to left at the top of the screen. I apologies if this was posted already.
This is in the tips thread.
Instead of apologizing, search.

To disable it I think u have to turn ON auto-brightness. I think its pretty useful, I dont see why u would want to disable it, but do what u gotta do.

Whenever i open he camera app my tab dims the backlight witch is really annoying, when I'm outside it's impossible to see.... Anyone else experience this? Any solution other than manually setting the backlight to no auto...?

ok, untick auto dim in pull down notification and set the desire brightness you wants(camera screen brightness follows this setting, it will not follow auto brightness), once you done setting it, tick the auto again so brightness is back to auto other than camera brightness.
Ahh.. Thank You.... that works for me. Excellent!

I realise this is a late reply... but I generally find my finger goes over the light sensor when I hold the device in landscape mode, which is annoying. The camera uses auto-brightness fine for me - until I go and look at the picture. It was turning the brightness right down. Unticking "Auto", changing it up, and re-ticking "Auto" fixed it for me. (Why I would want to change the brightness to a setting I've decided I don't want to use is anyone's guess.)
I noticed that it was working though I didn't find the open under the settings, but after I changed the brightness settings, seems like it doesn't anymore!!
Is SE hidden "Auto" under the carpet?
Dont be silly, the setting is right there... oh... actually, where has it gone?
Hmmm... cant find it in settings, sure it was there before. Try widgetsoid, that has an auto brightness toggle which works fine.

Are you guys are serious or just try to be
Ever since X10 was upgraded to 2.1, they took away the "auto brightness" from it. It used to be there when it was 1.6. Now I don't find that option in Arc as well, which is kind of weired. If you guys found it ... then I don't have any words to say!!

not being sarcastic mate..
when i got the arc I really remember seeing the option and testing it out...
since I never use it I really havent gone to the display settings (just use a widget to control brightness)..
after I read this post I went to chk it and it wasnt there...funny!

Honestly, I'm not trying to be funny here, but my Arc is only couple of days old and since I bought I didn't find this option at all. This particularly bothers me when I go out the brightness is too dark to read and I've to adjust it and then I come inside the shade, it's too dark
Honestly i swear there was one there - there was a checkbox on the slider popup. There was a software update about a week after i got mine, maybe they removed it in that.
I also remember reading something about it *always* being on regardless, and all the slider does in settings is set a general level it will change around, i.e. a 'gain' setting. Maybe that's what's changed in the update, and why they removed the checkbox. However, that doesnt explain why it doesnt seem to be working for you.
Regardless, auto-brightness still works on mine if i enable it via widgetsoid (or any other extended controls widget will probably do it). I can put my thumb over the sensor and the screen will darken etc.
it's always on apparently. i've tested it by passing the light sensor part of the phone over a ray of light coming from the window and you can see the brightness change. the light sensor refreshes every 3-5 secs or so.

I tested with the application you have recommended and setting it to auto seems like doing the job but it wasn't the case with some other widgets I tried. I don't quite understand why SE has to remove that check box. They did it for X10 when they upgraded from v1.6 to v2.1 and they seems like done it for Arc as well with smaller firmware update. But thanks anyway the application.
By-the-way are you using the same firmware version as mine or is it different?

I tried all methods from this thread and my auto brightness was not working until I put Power control Wideget (the one originally installed with system). One settings of its most right button activated auto brightness. Now it is nice to have it working.

I'm not sure what happened there, it works for me with widgetsoid without any issues! But I did face issues with few other widgets like Switchpro widgets or Extended Controls.
I don't think the Xperia Arc has auto brightness setting for the display. I looked at the power control widget, and the brightness control button does not have the 'A' state.

Have you tried the widget suggested? It has that "A" option you mentioned.
At the left side of the speaker for phoning theres this 5mm dot like thing. When I put my thumb on it, the brightness changes drastically. It probably thinks that Im in a dark room. When I release my thumb it goes back to normal. I notice this a lot since I put my left thumb there while watching movies.
Sooo ... auto brightness worked for me out of the box.
(I love the screen in direct sunlight ! On my mums milestone (droid) you can basically see nothing !)

Sorry, but you didn't know that there is this sensor for light?
Bought mine a month ago and one of the first things i did was adjusting display brightness. There was no auto brightness option and still isn't, 100% sure (.181). But it's working fine so i have no problem with it.

Using automatic brightness, i noticed there is a significant delay in when the device changes the screens brightness. So i am wondering if there is any possibility to increase the response time. When i standby my phone inside, and go outside, and wake my phone to check the time, i cant eve see my screen. In windows mobile, it would boost the brightness the second the screen turned on.
CM settings/display/automatic backlight/sample interval..
There are a whole other load of other settings if you select Use Custom light levels

Thanks but no thanks. That setting is only for if you apply a filter to the raw data coming in to reduce a flickering effect. It makes it refresh even more slowly then not having it on. I think it may be something kernel related. i remember in windows mobile you could set the polling level to any value you wished. It was a simple registry edit which had a value in milliseconds. Sometimes i think android is more a pain in the but when it comes to modifing it. -.-

yea your probably right about windows but you got to mess about with the custom levels (edit other levels) to get it to work on whatever kernal you have, think I mentioned this before fikret kernel is good . I have had my phone brighten and dim for no reason... on some kernels(als)...

Well I've abandoned trying to make the refresh rate higher, instead I'm gonna write a program that upon execution makes the screen at Max brightness the assign a gesture from the lock screen to said application
