OK guys, this one has been bugging me for a while now so i am asking for help. Im looking for a way to keep sms private on my phone. Currently I am using the privacy box in handcent sms (which is great for the most part) except for the fact that the notification system in the privacy box doesnt exactly work in my favor. If you turn notifications on and you recieve a notification it pops up the prompt for you to enter your password to the privacy box ( i can hear her saying "so why do you have a privacy box huh???) the other options for notifications are either for trackball light up or led notifications (which were obviously lacking). I just turn notifications off however theres obviously no way to know when youve recieved a reply.
So im sure someone out there has the same issue and im wondering how you guys work around it. any input helps thanks
just lock the phone with password....
use go sms pro. multiple privacy and notification options. and it's free.
Peronally I use Call Blocker app by NQ mobile, It has a lot of functionality including a private space which is password locked, and contains the SMS and call logs from the people you hae added to that list.
Personally, I dont use handcent or go sms' privacy option, i dont know why lol
however, i use app protector / other apps which locks multiple apps, to lock my personal stuffs like gmail, whatsapp
also i use GO SMS and enable the "privacy notification" mode so it only appears a logo at the top and tell you "new message" but without any information about the message. no sender, no content
i recommend you use my method too! hope i helped and happy messaging

How or what should I use so that the phone notifies me that i have a new message without showing part of it in the notification bar??
if i disabled "Received Notification" it won't let me know when i get new sms ...
Use Handcent SMS, there is an option for 'privacy mode'.
doesnt work whether i check the "Privacy" in notification settings or not it keeps showing the message concent in notification!
You have to turn off the notifications from the default message application.
dude i of course i know that ..i did that already, only handset giving me notification now...and it shows the msg content whether privacy is on or off :S

Do you know there are two 'privacy mode' options, one for the notification and one for the popup. I just tested it and it works as you wanted.
actually im disabling the whole popup thing. and i set the notification's privacy ON.
nothing
Ah yes, I've just noticed what you mean. It doesn't show it when it alerts you of the text but when opening the notification screen it shows it. That's not very useful is it? You could email the developer?
I just emailed him. thanks alot anyway.

Fixed: uninstalling Handcent SMS and using Private SMS
First of all I am rooted -=- already everything works fine for me only one thing I am having issues,, I installed Handcent…and made it my default TEXTING app
But I still get notifications from the messaging app that came pre installed
..
I did go to settings>I unchecked Auto retrieve and Notifications on the pre installed so
I won’t get it notification from the preinstalled app
It was doing good before the ROOT
But now I get both apps notifying me?
Can anyone give some advice?
To resolve this issue
yeah just go to the settings of the default txting app and turn off notifications there.
I did still get both notifications

1. The auto retrieve is for multimedia messages - if you leave it unchecked it will send you a message asking if you want to download it, then it will come to your phone (So, i'd probably re-enable that)
2. I doubt this will make a difference, so you can try to skip over the 3 if you want, but, you can try re-enabling the notifications, selecting the "silent" ringtone, and then disable the notifications again (just in case there was a bug about the notification box)
3. This is what most likely is the problem and I'm at work so I don't have time to test out all the combinations, but do you have another app that controls sounds (ringo, sms alert, etc.) that could be sounding an alert as well? Test out changing different alerts and txting yourself (either from your phone or set up a google voice account and send them quicker) and see what alert is really is that's notifying you besides handcent.
good luck, I'll check back after work!

thanks let me try a few combinations
What you have to do is first reset defaults for text messages under Samsungs text app. Now go to handcent and turn off notifications. Now next time you get text click the one notification you got. It should ask you what app you want to use to open it. Default it to handcent. You now only have one notification. It's a crappy workaround but its the only thing that works. You can try to uninstall twizmms but usually that causes more problems then it solves
If my ways don't work i'd say try psychoace's idea...it sounds like it'll work.
And I guess if ur like acjones you might want the auto retrieve off (maybe high schooler with lady friends...?) But for those of us without an issue its just an extra step, and has nothing to do with the notification tones
On a Vibrant, using this app-thingy
Im a physician and need to use my EVo to be paged by SMS, can someoen recomend a setting or hack to ensure when message is recieved, I get notified every X mins till I acknowledge, this way I dont miss any messages
I like handcent SMS. It can do all sorts of stuff including reminders.

Handcent does not have the option
I beg to differ docsboard... It has many different reminder settings. I had the same need and it does extremely well. Try it and dig into the settings.
handcent does have the options for reminders.. can't tell ya where exactly it is in the settings, but it's there.
Handcent does have reminders. Open Handcent, on the main screen hit menu and open Settings > Notification Settings > Notification Settings and scroll down to Reminders.
Also try Tasker. Great app. Tasker > State > Received SMS > Sender >
Can set alerts, like flash led, vibrate, notify, etc. Can use it to call a number (home phone, pager?) play a sound, or anything else you can think of.
It's free on their home page, I recommend buying it from the market if you use it.
The good doctor must not have time to check his thread or thank people for their help, even when he overlooked Handcent altogether. Or he's just rude. Maybe he needs to get an e-mail reminder (assuming thread replies send him an email).
Kidding, kidding.

I have discovered a big flaw today in my samsung tablet, running JM2 Froyo 2.2!
I received a SMS, my device was LOCKED (for privacy). But when the SMS arrived the device turned on, and, even if still LOCKED, it showed the content of SMS...this is not acceptable to me.
Is there a workaround? An additional settings?
I use the default Messanging.
2.
If of any help, I can unistall the default tool (messaging) and install Handcent SMS, but will this fix my issue? Again, I wish that NO SMS appear on display if in LOCKED mode (password protected mode)
Thanks
Saulo
If any of you can suggest a SMS application which fix this issue, I will appreciate to hear!
have a good time

There is an option in the setting for notification (Messaging -> Menu -> Setting). Have you try that option?

Dear Heru
I am checking...
I have only 3 settings enabled (NOT greyed):
1. delete old messages
2. auto-retrieve
3. Notifications (display message notification in status bar)
This 3rd one is NOT the culprit, since what it does is to display an icon in the top bar.
I have disabled it, but still I receive SMS full text (clearly visible by everyone) even in "locked passport-protected" mode.
Any more suggestions?
Thanks for your help!
Saulo866
If you install Handcent (maybe ChompSMS or others do it too), you can disable the popups altogether (locked or not). Both are free on the Market. Handcent also lets you set a security pattern to open texts (again regardless of whether the phone is locked) that also applies when you try to get to them via the stock Messaging app.
I have no idea for Chomp, but for Handcent, the setting is under Settings -> Notification Settings. There you can clear the checkbox if you never want the popups (only notification bar will be set off), and if you leave it enabled you have a subscreen for settings that will let you say whether you want it to turn on the screen, dim it, enable privacy mode (means you need to do the unlock pattern before any message details are shown in notifications), and a bunch of other customizations, including the "Show When Locked" which you can clear meaning that if you have any popups after all the other settings, it will remain "hidden" until you unlock the phone.
There have been aggravating issues in the past with sending MMS image files, but lately, I've had none, and am pleased overall with Hancent which is a pretty big upgrade over the default app.
Good luck.
Thanks a lot dear Buglessfan!
I will definetely use handcent SMS
Questions:
1. Do I need to unistall the stock messaging application?
2.if so, do you recommend to me use Titanium Backup Pro (which I have)?
It has a funzion called freeze, which i think is something like unistall but with the option of reversing it
Thanks and waiting
Saulo
I *think* it still needs the stock app to exist in the background, but they have a web site with their own forums and support, so I'm sure you can find out there. IIRC it's bbs.handcent.com or the like. If you have Titanium backup you could freeze it to try, or just uninstall it (after backing it up first). The cool thing is if you have both installed it still provides whatever added security you enable, the stock app isn't a back door.
I have used Handcent exclusively for quite awhile. You cannot uninstall the native messaging ap. (or at least you dont need to).
You can create a security lock specifically for Handcent and apply it to both Handcent and the native ap.
Then cancel the retrieval and notifications for the native ap. and all you will get are the Handcent notifications. If the tab is locked, you will get the notification sound, and the icon in the task bar and nothing else. Then unlock the device, and then unlock Handcent and read the message.
In my opinion, its a very secure way to receive SMS.
Thanks to both of you.
Dear Carlsbad: I have followed your instructions and now hadcent behaves exactly as I wished: no pop-ups are shown when a new SMS arrives.
I wonder if I can also disable the sound (triggered when a SMS arrives): the setting for disabling sound are in handcent? Or in the phone provider settings?
Thanks a lot!
Saulo
By the way: are you in Carlsbad in Orange County (close to San Diego)? I was there in 2007...very wonderful location!
If you just disable all notification in the stock messenging app, then, yes only the settings for Handcent matter, and the settings there are pretty rich, including custom sound, no sound, no vibration, particular vibration patterns, no led, custom LED color, et cetera.

Im glad it worked out for you! Yes you can modify the notification sound settings directly in Handcent.
Yes, I am in Carlsbad, CA. Actually its North San Diego County.
Take care!
Hi guys, hope you can help!
Basically the embarrassing situation has occurred a few times now when I'm showing my friends some features of the DHD a personal text comes in which was meant for my eyes only, however the first two lines of it are displayed in the notification bar when it arrives.
Surely there's a way to stop this from happening!?
Cheers!

If you're using HTC stock messaging app then there is no way to stop it. A solution would be to use messaging apps from the market like Handcent SMS and the likes. It will give you the ability to pop the notification but does not show the content.
I've just had a friend ask me this as well. Wanting just a notification sound and icon rather than disclosing the sender or the message body on the lock screen or in the notification bar.
I've got a DHD and don't mind if people see what i'm receiving, even to the degree that i've installed an app called ChompSMS which brings up a window on the homescreen displaying the full message.
I had a fiddle with the ChompSMS settings and it seems that you can increase the privacy settings to make it anonymise the notification, however as soon as you unlock the phone it will still show the full text in a window - I only fiddled a little bit, but couldn't find a way of disabling this without losing other features.
I uninstalled ChompSMS (for the purposes of this experiment) and had a look round at the generic (HTC) messaging settings and it seems like it's all or nothing, as soon as you turn off the 'received notification' option it greys out the options below it, meaning that you get no notification whatsoever when someone messages you (except for the green circle on the messaging widget - if you have this on your homepage).
I'm going to try installing Handcent (another popular messaging app) to see if I can make it do exactly what my friend wants done. I'll message back if I manage it.
Mike.
