[Q] Help please. Splashtop is just not connecting - Eee Pad Transformer General

Hi,
I just got my transformer, and am loving it. However, desperately missing the Splashtop streaming experience that so many people are raving about. Please help.
Whenever I try connecting, it says "Connect failed"
I have already enabled Splashtop Windows client in my Windows Firewall.
Also, I created a Splashtop rule (as mentioned on their site) to allow ports 6783-6785.
Have tried to seek help on their site, and in desperation turning to experts on XDA. Please help resolve this. In addition to the above, I am running a McAfee Antivirus that is enabled by the company admin, so I cant shut that...but I suppose that should be ok. Please please help...

Before 3.1, I had no issues. After, i'm having some issues sometimes too. I have to click it 2-4 times before it connects.
Don't know what happened. Nothing changed on my pc end. Wondering if it's a TF thing.

Does it work while on the local network? If so then its a port forwarding issue in your router or youre using the wrong address. If it doesnt work locally it is an issue w your splashtop server setup or windows firewall.

If via lan (inside your nerwork) u don't need to port forwarding. All u need to use is the ip address of that machine. Are u having issues inside or outside your network? I noticed on mines, when I get connect failed I need to stop splashtop client and then start it again. Here a weird issue Im having, if there was a session of rd (windows) on my server then after that I will always get failed error with splashtop. I need to either reboot that machine or use logmein to restart the software on the computer. For me, there an issues with splashtop and windows 7 rd.

It doesn't work for me within my home network. Is there a way to try and narrow down the problem, or test it differently?

Try downloading the free version in the market: https://market.android.com/search?q=splashtop&so=1&c=apps
If it works, you may have a problem with the Asus-installed version. If it doesn't work, it could be the "server" portion

Just checked out the free verison and the highest resolution is 1024× 768 which look like crap on the Tf. Unless the paid verison has a native resolution for the TF, I going to stick with the splashtop that come with the Tf

There's a bug with splashtop I think. I can't connect to my mac mini unless the monitor is on or plugged in. Maybe you should try that.

I'm pretty sure the answer is right here:
"In addition to the above, I am running a McAfee Antivirus that is enabled by the company admin"
You might want to chat with the company admin. If it's a work computer, 99.9999% of all admins will lock down ports to their IT Assets and there's not a darn thing you can do except get them to open it (small company) or get fired for trying to hack their network (large company).
If it's a work laptop maybe it might be on your side and something you can change but the vast majority of time the IT folks are going to close down company resources to avoid folks being able to do exactly what you are trying to do.

The splashtop desktop portion said there was an update so I installed it but now it only keeps me connected for a few seconds then it drops out. It also doesn't let me interact with what I'm seeing on screen. Anyone else run across this?

I have tried about everything I can think of to get Splashtop to work form outside ny home network:
Disabled firewall in Trend AV
Allowed Ports 6783-6785 in Trend
Turned off windows FW and allowed ports (three entries)
Turned off FW for UV modem
Allowed Ports in router (Lynksys)
And even tried disabling FW in router.
Thus at some point, all FW's were off, verified ip address (starts with 99, so correct one), used ipconfig to find IP of my computer too...
Whew... Any thoughts? Logmein works like S***, so I don't think I'll go there until they update it (or is the app better?)
Thanks!

Vibrant wifi issue?

If I am at home using my personal router, my wifi works great and I have no problems at all. However, when I am at the library, which is everyday for me, if i try to use their wifi I instantly get this error message that the page cannot be displayed even though my phone claims i am connected to their wifi.
anyone else have this issue? it is extremely annoying and i downloaded wifi fixer but it didnt fix anything.
any ideas?
If it works at home then I doubt it's an issue on your side, sometimes on networks such as school campuses and libraries you have to register your device on the network for it to be able to access the internet. Have you asked the library on how you can do that?
Well it is a public library and they have fliers up that tell you how to use their wifi. I thought it was an issue with my phone so I didn't bother asking a librarian. If no one else has a solution I will definitely be asking tomorrow.

well, Android has had that issue ever since, and it is still not fixed.
I think Samsung Galaxy S gets around it in the Wi-Fi proxy config (under settings, Wireless and Network, hit the menu button at the bottom of the screen, and go to Advanced), but you need to know the proxy hostname and port (I think the default will be 80 for HTTP requests).
I haven't tested it though.
Here's the issue log from code.google.com
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1273&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
Mine cannot get on WiFi at the rink I go to. Other people could not get their notebooks or netbooks onto that WiFi as well. My HD2 connects to that WiFi just fine, though.
I don't think it's a Vibrant-specific issue.
I've had a similar problem with the wifi network on my campus. It redirects to a logon page that the vibrant won't even display. Apparently the android browser has an issue with security certificates that aren't configured properly. Froyo is supposed to fix it, but in the mean time try connecting with the firefox browser. I'm able to connect with it, then switch back to the regular browser or any other program. Once you're logged in you're good to go.

Reverse Tethering

I want to set up my Windows 7 system as an access point (ad hoc, I suppose) so that I can connect my tablet via wifi and use the Window system's network access.
I used the ad hoc network wizard, but the tablet could not see it, and could not be force it to hook up.
Has anyone been successful at this?

i dun know but i hope u will have the way to do this
I was just working on this the other night, so I'll answer your question and pose a second.
Go grab the 'Connectify' program. That'll make the setup a snap.
Here's the problem, though.... Hoping some of the keen XDA minds might be able to help. The 'SoftAP' that windows 7 has built in will ONLY set itself up with WPA2 security. This makes it teasingly close to allowing Nintendo DS and PSP connections since it's setting itself up as an Infrastructure Access point, but only with security too strong for those platforms.
Does anyone here have an Idea of how to force/hack Win7 to use a lower form of security like WPA or WEP?
Would love to get an answer to above users question

Once i was blind, now i can see !
Thank you for this, i had problems with 3g at my work, now i have wifi!
After some additional research, I found out that this WPA2 'lock' is actually a part of the Win7 certification for a given WiFi device.
This would seem to indicate that it would be either part of the driver or hard-coded into the device itself.
A driver seems like it could be something that'd be edited to be more pliable with regards to Wifi protection, but if it's hard-coded, we're likely screwed.
Any info pertaining to using Windows XP Pro with any of this. I run on Revol Wireless with my Hero200,I flashed the phone to their network so I dont have full network access. Anyways...I'm trying to reverse tether at home to use the net on my phone where my network is connected through my desktop pc. I'm running a Dell Dimension 4600 with XP Pro strictly as my DEV computer. This comp only gets Android crap on it all the time. A few windows things here and there but I need the windows programs for the android stuff so...Any help is VERY greatly appreciated guys!

Wifi Hotspot - Why Gmail?

Hey everyone,
I've tried all of the tethering apps (usb/wifi) and none seem to give my laptop my legend's 3g data connection. I'm running CM7 (new stable version ) and i've been trying to use the built in hotspot to no avail. I can connect fine, even with WPA2 security, and the laptop connects fine (win7), and even shows full bars on the wifi icon in the bottom right of my taskbar, which says "Internet Access" when my mouse hovers over it.
The problem is, whenever I fire up chrome on my laptop, I get a page that says stuff like "Access denied", "authorization required", "You may need to sign in", and just gives no internet.
At first, I thought that it could be my carrier's fault (SFR France), that they don't want me tethering my phone's connection (I have a contract with unlimited data). The weird thing is, I can actually use gmail on my laptop! Yes, fully load new messages as they come, look through my archived messages, trash, spam, everything. Not even offline messages, it's really connected. So why can I access gmail on my laptop but nothing else? Could it be something to do with https connection to gmail or something like that? My phone's 3g works great, and my laptop has no troubles connecting to my home wifi. I've scoured XDA and google, and never figured it all out.
Anyways, thanks for reading!
Michael
Troubleshooting 101:
- first, please try another laptop.
if the other laptop works, then your current laptop has issues.
My bad, I meant to include in my first post that i've gotten the same result with 3 different laptops.
Have you tried pdanet app? That's what I use and it works wonderfully.
Sent from my CM7 EVO using XDA App
yeah man that was one of the first ones i tried. no go for me, same issue (not connection, but internet access).
When I try to open a page, my phone shows that it starts to download data (with the arrows lighting up and the "H" for HSDPA in the status bar). But then stops and my browser says nope.
tried changing DNS, for instance to googles own (8.8.8.8) on the laptop?

How do I change the DNS on my laptop? Don't I need to use cmd for that?
And an interesting new development. Hopefully someone smarter than me understands this:
I've now tried 4 different sites that fully work! The thing is, they're all https sites, which all the other one i tried weren't. Just to let you know, the 4 confirmed funtional sites are:
gmail
google docs
dropbox
android market (in pc browser version, not on my phone)
So its GOT to have something to do with the https...
Any ideas?
Thanks
Michael

about your problem, can you browse http (not https) websites in your phone's browser?

Absolutely. I've not run into any problems viewing any webpage on my phone, http or https, both on 3g and wifi (except for flash not really working, but that's beside the point).

Well, I have Windows XP and I don't have experience with Windows 7, but I remember that since Vista the network connections can be set as Home connection or Public (or something like that).
It's a wild guess but maybe the problem with browsing to HTTP websites has something to do with these network settings in Windows 7...
Try to compare the settings in the Home Wifi connection in your laptop vs the Mobile Wifie connection in your laptop, maybe some settings are different between the two.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately that doesn't change anything. I definitely know what you're talking about, and everytine I connect to a new wifi network I always select home as the network type, so that my browsing isn't restricted. Hence I did the same here, and even tried the public option, but no effect.

Yep I tried usb tethering, same deal. Windows troubleshooting "couldn't identify the problem". It's gotta be something either on my carrier's side, my phone's side, or my laptops side that is restricting hotspot access to http sites.
Try to use another browser app.
I ever had this problem on chrome, so i use firefox and it's working now.

Kies Problem

When i enter in the http:// address into my browser after starting Kies on my GS2 it doesn't always work, initially i thought this to be a browser problem but ive tried it on firefox which is my default, worked once but hasn't worked since, didn't work at all on Chrome or IE, i am entering in the correct numbers too which leaves me to believe there must be a problem with it as ive tried 3 different browsers and it's only worked once on forefox.
I'm running Cognition 1.13 and everything else appears to be running smoothly.
No one has the same problem?
Are you putting the :8080 after the ip address? Also. There may be firewall issues with your pc so ypu might want to check that too

yeah i am, actually you may have a point about the firewall thing in the one time it worked it wasn't with my home connection i was in someones else's house.
I'll look into it and report back.
This is still not working and im damned if i know what the problem is.
I've turned off the firewall on my laptop and tried on 3 different broswers but it just times out,on firefox it just says...
The connection has timed out
The server at ............. is taking too long to respond.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network

Odd place to ask this, but I would say try out Tor Browser. Also try Firefox portable (assuming you can stick a flash drive in the computer), there seems to be something about it, can't explain it, my tethering isn't blocked on it, but is on IE, and at my work websense doesn't seem to be able to block me.
Oh, if you get fired for non-work related web-browsing, I claim no responsibility.

well that depends, if your admin is worth his pennies then no, it wont help at all.
setup a white list on the physical router to the outside world and your snookered.
If they have just blocked access via the DNS server and its simply unable to resolve names then you could try bring up the command prompt and ping a website via its IP address type
ping 208.67.222.222
if that works then change your DNS server to that IP address, its an OpenDNS server, very good as it happens, if it doesn't then your screwed unless they are operating a black list, but that's just stupid as you could simply find a website not black listed or make your own that uses a frame to redirect to a site of your choosing.
NB, they might have locked that ip address too so try some others, less obvious ones
the trick is finding out how they have blocked you first, then you can see if there is a way, but white lists are a real pain in the arse, they might even just run a proxy server and have cached sites on that, if they are running a proxy server you could try and delete those settings, just make sure you write all this down or your admin will likely get a bit pissed off at you...
and a final point to remember, your often blocked for a good reason and that reason is usually in your contract of employment, you connecting to sites your not supposed to will stick out like a sore thumb on the router logs as well so as ^ said, if you get fired its not our fault
I used to work at a hospital that started blocking us from alot of sites. We eventually figured out they were using Symantec to do it so everyday we would uninstall it. Some days it would last all day, others it would last 10 minutes but we could usually wait and uninstall it again to regain access. We used xp on all the computers and we were assigned to different pods almost daily so we never were caught; not that they couldn't figure it out if they tried. If they are using Symantec then you may be able to uninstall it, otherwise you may be screwed.
I am still a RN and goto school with my patient. We are blocked on laptops from certain sites but I am not blocked on my phone. I can tether my phone to my laptop and it allows me access for some reason. I'm unsure if this is an option but figured I would throw it out there.

Symantec .....XP
**shudders**
is it at all possible that even though you have your phone connected via wifi that it still has a GPRS or HSPA signal? if so then its probably bulking at the lack of access on the wifi then switches to GPRS.

Ya I agree about the xp and Symantec but with 2000+ terminals, I'm sure it was the simpliest solution.
When I'm tethering my laptop via phone at the school, we don't have cell coverage in the majority of the rooms, which is why they give us a basic internet access so I don't believe I'm pulling in my mobile data, if I'm understanding your question correctly.
I'm back there on Friday and will see what's being blocked before tethering and then see what my data is looking like afterwards. I was "assuming " they were running different security for the mobile devices, allowing the loophole, but could be wrong.
