[Q]WTF is on the left side of external sd-slot? - Acer Iconia A500

The first time I´ve inserted my ext-sd in the slot I didn´t realised the little bigger (maybe 1.5cm) slot between the micro-sd slot.
There is a little sticker from ACER: "Warranty void if seal broken"
What the hell is under this sticker???
Anybody know without removing this and broke his warranty (why it is broken coz of this little slot??? is there the key for the nuclear bomb? )

That's just the slot for the SIM card on the A501 model. Universal case, y'know.
Don't put anything in there, it's just an empty socket. Your SIM will fall into the case if you try.

yes I thought so too...but its too small for a sim i think...or do you maenm a microsim?
BTW: why is my warranty void if I´m just curious what is this?

I thought they stopped using the big SIMs years ago? I've not seen one in 5+ years...
As for the sticker, you invalidate your warranty because.. you removed the sticker!
I guess it's because you could stick things in there and damage the tablet.

i hope some one would find a aftermarket SIM module that can be soldered into the tab in the future..

Not many are gonna risk their brand new £450 toy anywhere near a soldering iron.

Probably works like the mattress police, you take the tag off your mattress and they invade your home and arrest you... You remove the sticker, you void the warranty and the Acer police invade your home and arrest you....

Except the mattress tags say specifically "To be removed by Consumer only"

Universal Case
it's for the 501 model with wifi/3G
and there is no hardware hidden supporting the 3G feature on the 500 model
- do not open
- do not remove
- do not try
unless you got
soldering skills
mini-pcie slot
sim slot
etc... Waste of time... better buy a 3G model or just tether with a 3G phone easy less risky and pay only 1 fee

It was a thought anyway.

Mine had no warning, just a grey sticker over the hole

I have a question...why do you have to use the term "WTF" when asking a simple question regarding something which is pretty much common knowledge.
Really? Learn some civility for gosh sakes.

us warranty law
In the us opening this device will not void the warranty.but if you damage something by doing so will.and there is no reason to open this nothing serviceable or upgradeable inside.
I know this from owning a PC repair/retail store

Coz I searched and searched and thought about...100 possibilities but wasn't sure.
Also...with this title I get more attention than maybe..."I have a question about something somewhere on our tab but it isn't necessary to answer"....

i was wondering if i cut the string that attaches it and got rid of it, do you think tmobile would refuse to take my phone back if there was a problem? would that void a warranty?

When I had my T-Mobile Wing, mine actually fell off, when the ringer on my phone stopped working, and they asked me if there was any physical damage to the phone, if I ever dropped it, or if there was water damage. I said no and mentioned that the Memory card plastic flap fell off. The Rep said that the warranty was voided because that could be the cause of the ringing malfunction.........no joke..........I then asked to speak to their supervisor, While I was on the line the rep informed his supervisor about our conversation and the supervisor said to go ahead and send a free new Wing.
But why would you want to do this? For one if you take a close look inside where the memory card sits there are a few holes where dirt and dust can get in and do some damage, granted it is unlikely but why risk it just to get rid of a flap?
i think the mini usb door is so flexible and seems like its gonna break. Mine is not really solid and it stretch pretty far. I wish it was different sometimes because it doesn't let you plug in some chargers since the flash is so close to the access point and the usb flap gets in the way
has anyone's fallen off?
hbguy
First thing I do with all of my phones is rip it off. NEVER have had a problem with returns ever.
If you're an ignoramus and ask if it matters, of course they are going to play you for a fool.
Secondly, I think that Kronos has an issue with reading comprehension as he is talking about your memory card cover while you are asking about the USB port.
I gently pried mine off within 5 minutes of the phones arrival and I have it safely stored "just in case"
well i just pulled a little and the door came off so issue done. i wasnt ever going to tell tmo i took it off, just if someone noticed would they auto deny me. im smart, i was just gonna say it fell off the string.
mine just fell off on its own, but i wish it didnt cause im affraid that water might some how get inside and ruin it, do u think tmob will give me a new phone cause that?
oh and also i wanna get bronze or white g1 but i dont wanna pay $400 just to have a different color. does anyone know if i can get different color with exchange of my black one?

I have given my phone for repair after having a look at it the woman said one of the pins for the sim card are bent.
She said it may not be covered by the warranty as it looks like you tried to force the sim card in. I said I didn't then she said she will have the engineer take a look at it and if he can't fix it on site they have to send it off.
When I got the phone on contract it came with a micro sim and an adapter to use it which is very tight and fiddly to get in so I think that's why this happened.
So I phoned my network provider and talk them to send me a full standard size sim card which they will charge me £3.75 for...

yes, me, and gotta say, my local store is really on the ball. though, you need to know your consumer rights with them because they will try it on, and not offer what is rightfully yours - as it costs them money. i had to argue a point to get what was legally mine when dealing with a cpw call centre, so don't hold back. (if you have any experience of dealing with latin companies who tend to do exactly the same, then you'll know what i mean!)
ymmv from store to store, so try a different store if you can, ask for the geek squad - who are usually real geeks and speak your language - and then explain what's going on.
calmly state your point. point out you used reasonable care and didn't force anything in like they claim, show them the adapter thing and get them to do it. is it in a case? no scratches etc to strengthen your argument. if they refuse a repair under guarantee (when it sounds like this doesn't fall outside of reasonable use so they are obliged to - under uk law, legal duty falls on the store for guarantee repairs) then explain you're not happy and ask to speak to the highest person in-store - if you're young, unfortunately it may be best to take an elder with you here - take that persons name, time, etc, and record them if you can (audio will be fine) no, you don't need permission for this, and don't let on you are because they'll stfu. if they start rambling about shop policy, your consumer rights outweigh any shop policy they can dream up to justify their point. (their shop policy is not on clear public display at time of transaction, so matter not)
calmly explain what's happened, how it came to be, and what this in-store person has said, and that you're not happy with their decision etc etc. you're a good honest person blah blah. prompt them for answers about how to resolve the situation and let them talk. there's a clear line between mistreating a £400 phone, and using it with reasonable care. ask them if they think the phone looks like it was mistreated.
if they refuse to send it off under guarantee (when they have a duty to), ask why, and either call samsung / whoever is responsible for the support for the ns and explain the store is refusing, and / or, seek a small claims court case (as final choice though as this costs about £35) for any costs involved wit hsending it back manually + cost of the filing (hence the recording to strengthen your case).
i have heard a lot of bad stuff about them too, but they're real people so treat them like it, they're just working to a tight set of guidelines by their big boss (which most of the decisions i'd probably make myself tbh).

Thanks so much your info was very helpful.
The adapter is not in a case its just a flimsy piece of plastic shaped like a sim card with a hole in the middle where you you just plad your sim and insert in in your phone. It does not lock tin sim into place you have to hold the sim with one game and try and get it into the phone carefully.
Iforgot to mention before I did have a phone repaired from carphone warehouse before and it took 3 attempts for them to fix it.

HTC returning phones now with "anti-tamper stickers"

Honestly, HTC is turning into assholes.
As you know in the back in the upper left corner of the phone, there is a VOID sticker which if you break, violates your warrenty. It was easy to buy aftermarket ones in eBay.
NOW HTC actually changes those stickers to even smaller ones directly on the screw. Meaning you can access the hole, but as soon as you put your screwdriver there, you are ****ed.
A bit harder also to replace.
If noone has seem them, Ill post a picture.

Yeah I'm not sure why HTC is doing this but to be frank there's a lot of small decisions they made that ultimately led to putting a Samsung phone and tablet in my hand. I really liked the feel of their hardware compared to everyone else. Shame that they're starting to get it wrong - especially with recent hot waters with devs and stuff

Well in part I do understand; It cost me less than 50 cents, to order 100+ warrenty stickers from china to get my warrenty back. I can get a screwdriver, destroy the insides of my phone, and since the warranty sticker is on, they would have to replace it....
I'm surprised any G2s are still covered under warranty. Unless you bought an extended warranty, they should all be out of warranty now anyway.

No. In the European Union a two year warranty is required by law, which means that many phones sold here are still under warranty. My Desire Z will be covered by warranty until the end of August :silly:

Saw it, thought they change the warranty sticker or something.

i dont know about other peoples but my G2 had Viod stickers on all 3 screws, so did my fathers NOS one he purchesed a few months ago.
But in general at this point its easier to buy a 'new' g2/ desire z than to hassle with a return, that may not be under warentee, and that HTC could potentially wiggle out of fixing your phone (as i had happen with other companies products in the past, even some flat out deny to my FACE that they were not recalled etc. Im not one to trust the return/warentee people)
I dont really see how this is an issue : its there to protect the company from less than inclined people breaking their phone, returning it, and getting a shiny new one free of charge. (almost anything you buy has a statement about this) And as someone else said : you can buy stickers to cover up the screws again and it pretty much assures you a new phone or repair.

They had to replace the board for new eMMC, guess the only board they have in stock is the one with bad eMMC. Plus they replace the keyboard and trackpad with a new one.
I had the phone 10/2011 and have 1 scew void sticker. Never been serviced. Seems old news. I have 8 months of warranty to go too :victory:

Where is the IMEI marked on the hardware?

Where is the IMEI stored and/or branded on an AT&T S4, besides the motherboard and the IMEI sticker? Is it marked anywhere on the internal components that are left? Are there any memory chips or something where it's stored, besides the motherboard?
Thanks in advance!

It does sound a bit fishy, as the others stated. However, I've found that it's in two places:
In the firmware of the device.
On the sticker.
It may be permanently burned (fused) into the hardware somewhere, so even a full wipe via JTAG might not even wipe the IMEI. You can check it out yourself by looking up the teardown videos out there. iFixit has released one, and AdamOutler has released another.
Beyond this advice, I don't think anyone is going to speak about this subject with you. Pretty much the only reasons that come to anyone's minds as to why you need this info are:
- Tampering with IMEI
- Warranty fraud
- Insurance fraud
The only legal reason I can think of is:
- Selling parts of your device, and wanting to protect your IMEI information for some reason. .... but if your selling parts of a broken device and wanting your IMEI kept safe, it's probably to avoid being caught for insurance or warranty fraud.
I hate to assume you're up to no good, but it's too easy to with questions like this.

No it's none of the reasons you mentioned. To make a long story short, I buy and resell phones for a living. Someone scammed me and stuck me with a new AT&T S4 that's blacklisted. I checked and double checked the number and it was clean before I bought it, but it got reported a couple days later. So I was stuck with a new S4 I couldn't get rid of.
Most people have suggested just dumping it on CL to get my money back but I do not want to rip anyone off. I'm not a scumbag like that. I just want to recover as much of my money as possible without screwing anyone in the process.
I ended up finding another broken S4 really cheap and doing a motherboard and IMEI sticker swap with the new blacklisted device hardware. As it turns out, it works perfectly. So basically I now have a brand new S4 with a motherboard in it that has a clean IMEI, so now I can at least sell a working device to someone who will enjoy it and recover the vast majority of the money I invested in it. The thing that I am mostly concerned with is that if he or she brings it in for servicing, if they can somehow recover the original IMEI from the rest of the hardware. I'm assuming they will not be able to as I thoroughly checked the inside of the phone as I did the swap, and didn't find anything. But I wanted to ask and make sure as S4s are not the phones I usually take apart and work on (I usually deal with iPhones). I know that with iPhones, individual parts can be traced back to their original devices, so I was curious if Samsung did the same thing with theirs.
I'm not trying to rip off or scam anyone. I am actually making it a point to do the opposite in order to deal with the awful behavior of someone else without getting screwed in the process.
Thanks for the help.
The IMEI is in the software. It is very easy to get to.
Switching IMEI stickers is illegal just for your information. That can and would be seen as a way to defraud. Even though in your case it is not the intention. You can still sell the phone and list it as IMEI blacklisted. Unlock it first so any GSM carrier can be used. From what you say, it is legitimately bought, but I must ask a mod to lock this thread before someone comes in with either information on how to change the IMEI or asking how. Both are illegal and are not allowed here on XDA.
I also am asking a mod to lock this as I personally find it difficult to believe that one buys and sells phones and is just now getting to XDA... Its nothing personal against you, but I have been around here long enough to catch stuff that most people are oblivious to and find questions like this from any member new or old, somewhat suspicious.
I would like to extend a welcoming hand to XDA and I wish you the best of luck with your endeavors in buying and selling devices.

How can Samsung use some CHEAP PLASTIC on this expensive flagship?
Some other manufacturers are using metal and Samsung came up with the idea of using CHEAP PLASTIC.
I just bought this device and have lot of issues with it, the device overheat even after downloading all available updates.
Please guy take note when replacing your sim on your device to avoid breaking the CHEAP PLASTIC.

Yeah when I saw it was made out of plastic, I wondered why. The iPhone 4 had it out of metal, they should have made it out of metal as well.
Chill dude, its just the sim tray. Slap a case on it and you're are golden.
True that. How often do you take your sim out and put it back in? Its a smartphone, you will have to handle it with care often or else if your usage is that rough, ask the mobile shop owner to get it fully setup for you, put an otterbox and then chill out a bit!

hmmm Imagine you probably could head on down to a local phone place and say hey I broke my sim tray can I get a replacement tray its an s6 edge. but seriously what you do with that I mean it doesn't exactly require force for you lay the sim down in the one and only way it will fit and push it into the phone in its slot..... seriuosly not exactly something you should be applying any significant force too. and even if it was made of metal Id emagine it would Bend under the same amount of pressure you used to break ot break the plastic one, thus inabling it just as useless.
Changed my sim card twice now not noticed any issues with the tray so far.

Plastic if forced breaks, saves phone from damage. Metal if forced bends, possibly causing internal damage to the phone. Both would be strong enough that if your using them correctly they would not bend of break.
The only way i could see you breaking it is putting it in and accidently pushing up or down and breaking the end off but instead of taking responsibility for it you blame the company. They saved money in using a cheaper material in something that will not be used very much in an average persons life. If called business and a business cannot spend too much money on one thing.

To change the sim, you if first try to eject the tray, that will help to free the sim tray, then you use picker to remove the sim and you can insert another one back in.
