I was reading a little at the Acer's support website and look at this!!!
"If you set up a PIN or Password lock on the tablet, there is no way to unlock it without using the correct input. If you cannot remember the correct input, the tablet must be sent in for service to remove the password.
Note: All of your personal information, all stored contacts and any programs you have installed on your tablet will be erased during the password reset process."
I think (correct me if I'am wrong) this is the consequence of locking down the freaking bootloader, right?
What do guys think? I would like to hear you opinion.
Well in there defense you shouldn't really forget the password to a £450 device..
On another note I had this issue with Sony Ericsson. They wanted me to send the device to them because I forgot my Google password. I resolved this by doing a factory reset through a pc.
I don't think acer offer this though.
Edit: This isn't due to the boot loader. Its due to Google.
I use a complicated pattern lock.. and if I forget.. my 3 year old daughter can unlock it for me.

You know the human brain, this can happen to anybody. I've seen this happen more time that I can count.
What I 'am saying is, with almost any device (eg Iphone, Ipod, mobile phones, laptops, router) you can just do a factory reset by pressing some buttons during the POST, or in case of a laptop simply call helpdesk, authenticate your identity and they give a master password.
The inability of reinstalling firmware thru a PC makes a password reset (factory default of firmware load) impossible.

Yes I understand that we can forget the passwords for our device.
But if its a tablet whats stopping you from using a default one you use for devices?
In my opinion not doing a way off resetting the device is quite a smart move. If its stolen its stopping people from getting into your device.
A example off this would be when my dad found a iPod touch. All I did was connect it to a computer and wipe everything.
I like the idea off it being "bricked" makes it worth not stealing.
EDIT: Besides Google offer you away off recovering your password

I concur with you "I like the idea off it being "bricked" makes it worth not stealing", but really, will it be a deterrent from getting your tablet stoled....c'mon.

That's what I heard too - if you forget the password or swipe sequence it asks for your Google/GMail user name and password.

Resetting your Iconia Tab A500
How do I fully reset my Iconia Tab A500?
If your Iconia Tab A500 completely fails to respond when you press buttons or tap the screen, you may need to reset the hardware and software to factory default settings.
PRECAUTION
During the process, all data stored on your system will be overwritten. This means all your files, such as email and photos, will be erased. Therefore, we recommend making a backup of all personal data before starting the recovery process.
NOTE
You should perform a hard reset only when all other options have failed to restore your tablet to an operational state.
SOLUTION
To reset the tablet, use a small thin object, such as a paperclip, to press the recessed reset button. This button is located on the bottom side of the tablet, next to the USB connector, as shown in Figure 1.

I wouldn't have it any other way - just like my phone, if it finds it's way into the wrong hands I want to be inaccessible to who ever got their hands on it - I've got mine set even more secure thanks to an ActiveSync policy from work - 10 bad passwords and the device wipes to default. A) keeps me from losing my data to a thief and B) keeps me from using it when the Irish in me gets me piss ass drunk and I send an email I'll regret in the morning
at least you corporate data is secure and nobody can steal it, that is very important.
anyhow if you want to reset you device to manufactory do the following:
power it off
keep the volume+ (volume up) button pushed and the power button, on power up your finger on volume+ (volume up) and release the power button.
you will get a message that cache and data reformatting is starting, and take it from there.
don't forget to put a update.zip on your external sd-card, preferably a stock 3.1 version.
In fact the problem might also occure if you have configured exchange activesync and encrypted your tablet, and if you have done some flashing of thors kernel. your passwords want work anymore. don't use thors kernel if you encrypt your device for whatever reason.
the paper pin thing does not work in this case.
That's a brilliant idea that the only way to unlock it is by sending it in or knowing your reset details. Means all my data is safe - yes the Tab can be used if it's completely reset but they can't get their hands on my accounts and data.
I must be in the minority here - I find it hilarious that people forget passwords. It amuses me no end when I get asked to reset them at work no end of times on a monday morning. I have to change all my passwords on a 30 to 90 day cycle at work, not allowed to reuse the last 10 passwords and there's 12 different accounts. Not forgotten a password in 16 years.
how do you remember all your other passwords?
I mean, in today's world you have a password for everything.
Give it the same password as your bank card or keep it in a password program.
Oh I forgot, you might forget that password.
Use your daughters name.
"oh man, I forgot my daughter's name, honey, what is your name?"

Hi,
After a couple of days playing with the HTC touch HD I noticed that I can not lock the device anymore by long pressing the end key. I have looked into the settings and it clearly states that long pressing the end key should lock the device.
whenever I long press the key I see the some screen refresh but the device is not locked.
If I switch off Touchflo3D and show the device lock on the today screen, then the device gets locked. Could this be a bug in touchflo3D?
I would hate to have to perform a hard reset just to fix this issue...
If anyone knows a solution, please let me know.
Edit: well, I found the reason why this happens. Once you setup a password for your device, it stops locking the device using long press end button. It sucks, but I can live with it...
Looks like a hardreset is the only way to go.

If I perform a hard rerset, will I still have all the applications that came standard with the like touchflo3d and google maps? or will I need to reinstall some of the applications myself?
You will have them. It will reset to factory settings, original ROM plus all installations HTC chose to put on the HD.
this hasnt worked on mine from the moment i got it, so i suppose a hard reset isnt going to fix things (?).

yes that one works when you turn touchflo off but the touchflo end key press never worked.
Can someone confirm that you no longer get a choice of action for the Long Press End Key, i.e. it locks the device and that's it. On the diamond you are able to choose an action or choose the display choice list.
Thanks, cojo

This is the same with me and I've not touched push e-mail or exchange server settings. I've only had the phone for 36 hours so not done much at all. The first thing I went to try and do was lock the phone and it didn't work. I'm reluctant to do a hard reset as it didn't work out of the box.
Did you try a hard reset? Did it solve the problem?
no i didnt try a hard reset, didnt think it was worth it just try to get the lock to work.
Has anyone else had the same problem with it not working right from the start and tried a hard reset? If so, did it solve the problem?

I performed a hard reset and then it worked again. But after setting up exchange, it stopped working. The device lock on the today screen still works though, but not from touchflow3d
I decided to go for it and do a hard reset. The device lock still didn't work. All I had done was follow the original setup screens after the reset. During this I set up Lock with a simple PIN and to prompt for it after an hour of inactivity. If I remove the settings from Lock I can then use Device Lock on long press End key but I can't use both.
This is rather frustrating as I had simple PIN (paranoid as had an Ef stolen a few months ago so at least this would stop them accessing any info stored directly on the device as they would have to do a hard reset to clear it) and Device Lock set up on my Elf which worked absolutely fine.
Has anybody managed to get both working together on the HD? I use the Device Lock to stop any buttons being pressed when I don't want them to be and the PIN so it's harder for people to access any of my personal info if the phone is stolen (not that I intend for this to happen again!). I really would like both to work together!
Just spoken to CS at Orange and they have no idea if this issue with only able to have either Lock or Device Lock working at any one time is specific to my device or whether everyone is affected. If anybody is able to try and let me know their results I'd be grateful as I don't know yet whether I need to send the phone back as faulty.

Just confirmed that removing the password re-enables the device lock. Nice find!
I am on Vodafone.
I assume that one of the manila files in \Windows is checking a registry entry. I wonder if it is possible to make a change that allows both functions to co-exist.

Thanks for the reply. I guess that confirms that it's not specific to my device! As I mentioned before both functions did co-exist quite happily on the original Touch (Elf) so it is possible. I wonder if it is related to the newer style TouchFlo3D and if anyone experienced the same issues on the Diamond or the Touch Pro?
I hope it is something that could be sorted with "tweaks" to certain files or registry entries. If anyone finds out how to solve it I for one would be very grateful!

Did your exchange policy force you to setup a password? it appears to be the problem. When you setup the device initially with a password, then you cannot lock the device anymore using the long press of the end button. Device lock in today screen always work, the problem is the long press of end button, that stops working as soon as you have a passwaord set up.
Since the OP from the Faulty thread isnt around and theres already too many issues lost in the forums i thought on gathering all the issues/fixes in one spot to help people out in a quicker way.
I will be listing all the issues/annoyances and their respective fixes in this thread but i need your help since i cant find all of them and your feedback about the fixes.
Once someone reports a new issue, if needed/requested, i will start a poll to see how many people are experiencing the issue to help out detecting a faulty device from a real general issue.

Annoyances:
When adding any app as a accessibility service (e.g. Lightflow), the Touchwiz Launcher will start telling you where you are right now, e.g. "Homescreen 3 of 5", "Opening folder".
Waking up the phone isn't always instant.
No USB storage mode, only MTP or PTP. You can't use the phone while transferring files.
Boot animations use Samsung's proprietary QMG format --> no custom boot animations for now
While you're in a call, sometimes you can't use your mobile data connection. Wifi works though.
Attaching headset/earphones shows various audio applications that can be launched in the notification area. These apps cannot be customized.
The accuweather widget has a maximum refresh time of one hour. Setting it to anything less than that is not possible. Also, it doesn't always update the current location.
- Couldnt drop more than two apps (one after the other) in to an app draw folders

The "Talking Touchwiz" issue afflicts me too now that i have installed Lightflow...
BUT... it's not that easy to prove - as it seems to depend on what you are doing at the time, such as Double tapping the home key to start S-Voice etc - it might kick in and 'talk to you', sometimes it doesn't. It did it many times for me at first, but its not done it this past week.
To the OP...
Just to add to your comments...
"Remove Lightflow" as an Accesibility service would remove it's use altogehter. Removing "Talkback" as an Accessibility Service did nothing to stop the problem for me. Even though you have this marked as a "FIXED" item.
They don't equate to my expectations of what a Fix is alas *lol*
And in similar terms, the wi-fi issues "fix"... Firstly, as we do not know what affect this will have on battery drain (I mean I'm sure Power Saver Mode is there for very good reason), then again, I certainly don't see this as a FIX either... A workaround perhaps, but if so, one with all it's own issues at that.
Notwithstanding, that today, when I ran a Speedtest and again found my connection to be dire, I looked in the Service Menu, and I too, as posted elsewhere, had found that Power Saver Mode was back ON again, and it had not remembered my settings.
So if I have to do this regularly, then its far easier for me just to turn wi-fi off, then back on, which seems to fix my issues every time anyway, but without any Battery Drain, or fiddling with secret (and dangerous) Service Menu settings instead.
Please don't think me having a go at yourself...
It's just that you seem too quick to take something as being a "Fix", just to perhaps seem like you have all the answers...
Please believe us - our ire is not with you, it is with Samsung, to whom we hope a fix will soon be coming for these, and the many other little minor issues in the current firmware, like forgetting all settings, brightness, etc.
So don't worry (yet). Just list any issues, and we'll berate Samsung for a proper fix, not yourself in any way.

Thanks for your support
I'm grateful that I don't have the Wifi issue but I don't take comfort in the fact that every new handset that's been announced to fanfare has had issues that have made me think along the lines of, "seriously, who tested this?"
That said, in my day job, people call in to see me with one or another issue and their device has a common problem that we'll talk about in XDA, but the customer don't see it as a problem, just as something that they deal with day in, day out. Or it goes into the box of, "doesn't work, don't really care." I love being a perfectionist.

the first three tabs work like tabs, but click on the 4th contacts tab, the screen reloads and now the tabs shuffle to:

Now last three tabs work like tabs, but click on the 1st to go back to the first state.

This, good sir, made me laugh!
In regards to the TalkBack issue, I tried the following scenarios:
No accessibility services: Silence
Adding Tasker: Phone tells me where I am in certain situations
Removing Tasker: Silence
Adding Lighflow: Phone tells me where I am in certain situations
Removing Lightflow: Silence
Adding Tasker and Lightflow: Phone tells me where I am in certain situations
Removing Tasker: Phone tells me where I am in certain situations
Readding Tasker and removing Lightflow: Phone tells me where I am in certain situations
Removing both: Silence
Adding TalkBack: Phone tells me where I am at all times
Removing TalkBack: Silence
Could this be a common issue of Lightflow and Tasker? Can anyone test some other app that needs to be added as an accessibility service?
The dev of Missed It! (which needs to be added as an accessibility service) has suggested making sure that both Talkback and Install Web Scripts are set to off in the Accessibility settings. I'm *still* waiting for my blue S3 so can't confirm whether this works or not with other apps but someone might want to try

Had no idea of the swipe style option available on the keyboard...
Here's a video of tips and tricks I've just whipped up. -> http://youtu.be/tC7z5PCdGLE
This is what I've discovered so far: smart stay, motion gestures, keyboard layouts (displayed by OP), handwriting input, nav keys extra functions, S Pen button, mini apps, screenshot key alternate uses and a demonstration of power, four apps running at the same time all of them shown on the screen at once!
Seems the more I learn about this tablet the more I like it. I had removed all of the Sammyware, but now I've out a few things back. Great thread.

For a keyboard to pop up it needs to have an input field. it will be useless if you pop it up without anything listening to the keyboard.

Well I have this situation where I need to press F12 to change to another page, but no input field in the page by itself. I tried clicking on the address bar to open the keyboard, but since the focus is not at the right place, it's not working. So I have a situation where it is NOT useless.
I don't know what troed wants to accomplish though.

I'm curious as well. I hate lock screens, they don't seem to have any use to me, especially on a tablet. This thing can't turn on in my pocket, I don't wear clown pants(assuming clown pants have giant clown pockets). I just installed the "No Lock" app which does the trick.

Thanks. More info, please. Already looked there. Maybe my contacts are dirty.
Anyone know if there is any way to go immediately to Google bookmarks in the stock browser instead of local?

"None" should be the very last option in the screen lock page.
Nice. Thanks. Yup, seems I need wipers for my contacts.
Here we go in German settings (see attachment)
Why I need the keyboard to be opened even if there is no "call it to screen" input field:
I use "logmein" now for a couple of years for only one reason: to check my patients data base in my clinic.
Once I'm logged in and the remote screen appears I can click the icons to start the program but once I want to type a name ton the remote PC he keyboard does not appear.
Of course there would be other solutions, but I tried Splashtop Remote and other similar apps which do not work since my provider protects my clinic from outside intrusion by a firewall and even after my provider opened the ports necessary to run Splashtop Remote it does not work. After testing a lot of apps in the last two years with my SGSII/III and Note LOGMEIN is the only procedure that works. Of course I could buy the Android app Logmein ignition but look at the rating of this app, the prize and comments that it works very poor if at all. And why should I buy an app when my magnificent Note10.1 can do the same with it's browser ?IF I COULD FORCE THE KEYBOARD TO APPEAR ON THE SCREEN TO TYPE ON MY REMOTE PC !!!!!!!!
Hi All,
Yesterday I flashed my Nexus 4 with android 4.3 (was very excited about it, i dont know why). One thing I have noticed since that update is that if I click the mic and say "Navigate Home" it doesnt work. Before in android 4.2.2 it used to show me the route to home and navigate. I tried saying "Navigate to London" and it still doesnt work. Actually it doesnt work with any cities. I think it doesnt recognises the word "Navigate" now. All it does it that it shows me some google searches which are not even related to maps and navigation. I have selected my language to be English UK. In 4.2.2 it was the same and it worked. Is anyone facing this issue? If not then does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks in advance
anyone?
Works fine for me

doesnt work with that either. im sorry i forgot to mention. I am using google apps (as i have my own domain). does this make a difference? in 4.2.2 it used to ask me to give the home address at least. in 4.3 i get nothing
works fine. no issues at all.
i did a stock factory image flash over stock 4.2.2
I have this same issue with a 4.2.2 mod on the SGS3. Navigate to anything always searches it instead of navigating it.
Mine works fine. Sometimes "set alarm for..." Just searches but most of the time Google commands work. Mostly.

This has been broken for me ever since they updated maps. I have reverted to the old version of maps, but it still doesn't work. I have tried reverting to old versions of Google Now, but it still doesn't work.
I use "Navigate to [...]" and "Map of [...]" all the time, but they have been broken for well over a month. "Set Alarm [...]" still works fine. I do not use any other voice commands.
I hope someone can figure it out... I really, really, really miss this feature!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
What the !?!?!?!?! So seriously this has been broken everytime I try it for over a month. It was broken 30min ago before I came here and started ranting about it in multiple threads. I've tried to "Navigate to [BusinessName]" and it just would never work. I just tried the above example "Navigate to Texas" and it worked perfectly! Then I tried BusinessName and Home as well and they both worked. Yay! How did it just fix itself due to me posting complaints? Is Google watching me -lol/jk Maybe "Navigate to Texas" is the magic work that unlocks it so it starts working for everything? WTF
So very very strange. My ROM is 4.2. I am running the latest Google Now which was recently updated through market. I am running a custom BlackMaps.apk based on the last version before they changed the UI. I am soooo happy to have this back. Hopefully it doesn't disappear on me again.
Mine started working
Think I may have found a fix (accidentally). I was having the same issue but then I opened up the main google now app and then pressed on the voice icon beside the search bar and gave it a navigate to command which worked instantly. It then seems to work with the voice search widget once you have used the navigate command through the app itself. I hope this helps..
I wanted to confirm it also worked for me
I was also having the same problem that people were as to when I said navigate home running android 4.2.2 and also 4.3
I also tried it with a few other phones like my HTC one – M7 and also a Moto X and what I found was the same as what you suggested going to Google now and set up Google now and click the microphone and say navigate home and then it will work just fine. One thing I did notice is that you have to set up Google maps in my places to put your home address to have it work. thanks for this great tip
working for me. Running PA 4.3

What worked for me...
Hey, not sure if my solution will help anyone, but figured I'd throw it up here.
I was having the issue on the Nexus 5. Couldn't get navigate home or navigate to work to function by speaking. Found that if you scroll all the way to the bottom of Google Now, and select the little icon on the bottom that looks a bit like a magic wand, there are options in there to set up Home and Work if you select "Places". Mine were already set up and not working, so I just set them up again. That seemed to fix it! Hope that helps someone.
my "navigate to work" command works fine on all my devices, but the "navigate home" will not work. I keeps popping up google search results. I tried it on my new Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and my old Epic 4G Touch (running stock 4.1). All will not navigate home...
possible fix:
I loaded Google Maps on my desktop, clicked the options icon, and selected My Places.
then on the left under CREATE MAP where it says HOME, I clicked the down arrow and EDIT.
I changed my home address to something nearby, and clicked SAVE.
I reopened GMaps on my phone and it was still showing the home icon on my old address so I went into settings,
and signed out of my account and then signed back in. The home icon was now in the new address. So I closed GMaps,
and said "ok google, navigate home" and sure enough it's working again.
I tried it on my Nexus 7/old Epic 4G Touch and "navigate home" is working again on all devices.
This has to be some sort of issue on Google's end, perhaps the servers aren't syncing correctly or something.
I'm gonna wait a few mins and then edit my address back to my actual home address and see what happens..

Thanx. Worked for me too.
I figured out how to make this work consistently now. In Google Search's Settings, go to "Accounts & privacy", make sure to enable "Personal results".
Necro, I know, but I fixed this on my Nexus 5. I had to enable Web History. At some point in time Google changed things to check Web History (recent searches) for locations and places even though it's fully listed in Google Now and Google Maps. After enabling history and setting addresses again / searching addresses in maps google now started to work instantly by saying navigate home / work.
Fix for me
I had multiple phones with this problem multiple accounts.
1st I cleared out the home location stored in maps
2nd tried to put my address in and it said it couldn't find it
3rd searched for my address in maps and discovered that Google has decided my street name is two words instead of one.
4th edited my home location in maps settings to be the wrong spelling
All good now..
I wonder if Google updated maps and changed the spellings and such.
Good luck..
From what I've been finding online, the Pulse colour suffers from finger print issues more than the Eclipse Black. All I've been able to establish is it has something to do with the different RAM and Storage the Pulse model has, which results in something not working in software. I guess they developed the software on the Eclipse Black (why all of the demo units sent to reviewers before release were Eclipse Black), and then they just slapped it on the Pulse model at launch, and hoped for the best.
Now when you change the DPI (as everyone knows they disabled this option from factory). 449dp seems to be the sweet spot for this phone, it's as small as you can make it without causing major issues. In my testing, 480dp causes the app drawer to not open every single time, and the app drawer labels are cut off at the bottom. Using 500dp, the app drawer won't open at all, so 449dp is the sweet spot for this phone.
Only issue I've found with 449dp is the dock, it shows 5 icons by default. On first start up after a reboot, the icons are evenly spaced across the entire bottom of the screen.

}
When you open any app (even opening the app drawer or pull down the notifications) and go back to the home screen, the 5 icons are suddenly condensed in the middle closer together. They all still work fine, it just adjusts their placement for whatever reason, but they all continue to work fine in their location until you reboot and they'll organize correctly again until anything is opened and it resets back to being condensed towards the middle.
Changing the DPI:
You need to open Settings > About Phone > tap on the Build number, 7 times, this activates Developer options. It will automatically open this for you. (you can access this after by going to Settings > More system settings > Developer options).
In Developer options, scroll down to the Drawing category, and you'll find Smallest width at the bottom of that group, tap it, and change it to 449
You have now successfully change the DPI to 449, congrats!
Fixing the Finger Print Reader:
Now I included changing the DPI above because my settings do not apply to the stock 360dp, it's the same process, but the values will be different for 360dp. Which is why I recommend changing the DPI to 449 for best possible results before using this fix.
You need to download Activity Launcher
When you open Activity Launcher, search and open In-Display Fingerprint and tap on com.goodix.fingerprint.setting.MainActivity
On the screen that opens, tap on Locate sensor and change the values as follows
X = 390
Y = 1900
Width = 300
Height = 300
Lock Aspect Ratio = On
Gradient = Off
W:H 13 & 16
Just reboot your phone, and enjoy a working finger print reader! Great Job!
This fix is for the Pulse colour Red Magic 5G as the Eclipse Black model does not suffer from the same issues, but your results may vary.
Trouble Shooting:
If you are having further issues, BACK UP YOUR DATA and then try doing a factory reset using the Update Software Method
Go to Settings > System Update > tap the three dots in the top right corner > Enter Recovery mode
The phone will reboot into recovery, and from there, you need to use the volume keys and power button to navigate.
Volume Up = Up
Volume Down = Down
Power = Select
English > Wipe Data > Wipe Userdata Partition
Once that's completed
Wipe Cache Partition > Back to Main Menu > Reboot
After you set the phone back up, you're good to go and try this again, doing this fixed TONS of issues I was having with the phone.
When I first got my phone, the finger print reader wasn't great, occasionally it wouldn't work all 5 tries, requiring me to input the pattern unlock I had set. After doing a factory reset by going to Settings > More system settings > Reset options > Erase Phone, the finger print reader wouldn't work at all, and the more factory resets I did trying to recovery the phone back to it's out of box state using that method, only made it worse until the phone was actually unusable and constantly crashing, causing it to force reboot itself just trying to do simple tasks like texting or opening a game.
After doing a factory reset using the System Update Method, I haven't experienced any further issues like this, and have repeated the reset multiple times during testing without any issues. So if your finger print reader is already having a mind of it's own, try doing a system reset using that method first, and then try my fix, because after doing what I mentioned above, it works every single time.
May the odds be ever in your favour.
This is for the locked bootloader right , not unlocked. Cons when you unlock the fingerprint doesn't work.

Yes, this is for the factory locked bootloader, I was doing some reading about the finger print issue, and there actually is a way to root and lock the bootloader, keeping the finger print reader working. It has something to do with unlocking the bootloader on global, making a backup of your firmware, flashing the china firmware, that locks your bootloader again, and then restore your rooted backup, and you keep root with the locked bootloader or something. There's no guide yet, but there's a few posts around that I've found that said this is possible, but the process is extremely picky, it's like an exact process of flashing, wipe, wipe, flash, wipe, etc. It's just a glitch that someone found in the Telegram except the links to the Telegrams got taken down for some reason so I can't join it to learn more about this.
However, with that being said, I would just recommend not updating the phone when Nubia does release fix for all of the current bugs, just keep moving through them, and staying on the launch firmware until a guide on that root with locked boot loader is made, because that seems to be the best possible solution for this phone as of right now.
Another option is one person was able to get Havoc OS working on it, and even though the finger print reader, rgb, fan, and 144hz don't work, that ROM has face unlock, less secure than a finger print reader, but faster, so it is an alternative to making this into more of an actual "phone" and less of a "console".
