Syndicate Frozen - Epic 4G General

Hello all. I am sort of new to the smartphone hacking (for lack of a better word). I recently switched from my Evo 4G to the Epic 4G. Evo was great but I just loved the AMOLED screen too much and the slide out keyboard. Actually my personal opinion is the Epic is a better phone, again personal haha. But the Epic does need tweaking. I do experience more issues with it than I did with the Evo. I have spent days on this forum reading about Odin and ROMS and what not and I am thinking of taking Syndicate Frozen for a test drive. I REALLY want Gingerbread as I gave my Evo to my wife and I did the 2.3 update and that Evo phone is SO much better. Anyway since no one really knows when the Epic is getting the new cookie rom I want to try something else in the meantime. A couple questions I have is: oh and I am waiting for 1.1.1 Fully loaded I like touchwiz
What exactly is removed from the phone ie. The "bloat"
Will I still be able to put Gingerbread on my phone when it releases?
What exact files and programs do I need to have on my computer to get Frozen?
How do I backup my phone so I can stock it if I have to go to Sprint?
I apologize if the questions are silly but I'm humble enough to admit I am a noob haha. Thanks in advance for any assistance you folks can offer.

Look up user qbking77 how to there. A links in comments and

All sprint apps. Tv, NFL, Nascar etc. Think free office. Allshare... all of those are gone.
You will, but you need to make sure you back up all your apps using titanium backup as you might have to do a factory reset to do so.
Go to youtube.com/qbking77. That's my channel. Find Root using one click root 3.0.2.5 and do that. After you do that find me and message me and I can help you out.
Also in that youtube channel there is a video on how to properly use odin. That is how you will get back to stock in case you need to take it back to sprint.

Thanks to XDA, I'm in love with my phone

This is my first post here, but I've been lurking pretty regularly for about a week now. I was actually shown these forums by some folks over in the Penny Arcade forums Android thread.
I just want to drop a quick line and say thanks to everyone over here; The developers, the people who answer questions, thanks to the mods who keep the place going. Thanks to you guys I was able to go from being a relative Android noob to having a completely rooted, custom ROM flashed, and extremely sexy Epic.
Sometimes people only post when they have an issue, or when something goes wrong, and I wanted to buck the trend a little and post just to say thank you. As the thread title says, thanks to XDA, I'm in love with my phone
(For those curious, the technical stuff:
Samsung Epic 4G
Nebula ROM 1.0.6 w/ EXT4 (Froyo/DK28)
ADW Launcher
Quadrant is scoring around a ~1450, which is 400 points more than any RFS setup I tried...go go EXT4).
Yeah xda is a great place and we should all be thankful for the developers on here. They sure as hell don't do this to make money. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have these great features we have now. We would also be stuck on 2.1

So happy as well!
I would also like to chime in and thank the XDA community as well. After months of debating whether or not I should update to DK28 Froyo, I decided to take the plunge yesterday. After you have all the software downloaded, phone hooked up to your computer, and Odin ready to flash for you... everything makes sense.
I can kinda see why Samsung/Sprint is taking too long to have the update come out. To update everything including all of your apps, settings, contacts, and saved messages all for Ma and Pa Epic 4G user without calling Sprint and complaining why something got deleted... I can see why. Re-configuring my contacts was a pain in my ass last night! My GPS didn't work, so I also had to do the GPS trick by entering in ##74 whatever and entering in my MSL, but it worked!
However, after all is said and done... THIS PHONE ROCKS!!! It's faster, the new music player is BADASS, everything WORKS, and I'm very happy. Thanks, XDA!
Ditto,
This has been a source of bountious information.
Couldn't have said it better myself <3
Epic is as Epic does
Same as OP. Thanks XDA for really putting in the time and effort to bring the community such awesome work. Like the OP I am running Nebula 1.0.6 with ETX4 and ADW Launcher.
hey guys long time lurker and first time poster, want to chime in that i also appreciate all the epic lovin from the devs, only bricked one phone so far but that was my own dumb fault.... skipped a step and flashed the wrong thing first earlie in the ext4 roll out...
Thanks again
Glad to see so many others have had the same experience as me

Agree.
I've lurked on XDA for a long time, didn't end up joining until sometime last year just so I could download some wallpaper or something.
Well I had no issues with my Epic anyway, but gave in to temptation and loaded the DK28 leak 2-3 days after it surfaced... kind of liked it but it was a little buggy on mine. I eventually went full tilt and loaded Bonsai at 1.1.2, had a blast with it getting the best of 2.2 without a lot of the bugs of DK28.
A week or so ago I switched to TrulyEpic, and holy cow, I love my phone so much now. It may not have the impressive bench #s of Bonsai (close), but man is it ever stable. It's like a rock, that thing is the best thing to ever happen to my phone, and I am so glad XDA and it's members are here to provide stuff like this for us. Apart from official froyo, I'm good for the long run now and getting way more enjoyment out of my phone than I thought I could.
It's nice to hear some positive posts on the Epic 4G forums
Anyways, it's nice to see someone that's happy with the ROMs we are quite fortunate to have here. Leaks of any kind are a privilege, not a right, and I wish more people would be grateful.

Omg @Rockstar thats funny, I was just about to type that **** down but you beat me to the punch. There has been so much negativity in this forum, that alot of times I think we forget how good we actually have it. Alot of us then revert to taking everyone on here for granted. Sure were not the biggest forum, we dont have the most Roms, but the devs we do have are dedicated and do a wonderful job. We should all be gracious whether they ask for donations or not, because regardless they are all making XDA a better place, and making smartphones in general fun for all of us for years past, and years to come!
+1 for this post.
Recently I flashed back to di18. I wasn't having any luck with the froyo rims. Gps didn't work, slow auto rotate, and lags and hangs hit me with no matter what rom I flashed. Now that the devs have rolled ext4 conversion and rooting into flashing clockwork I loaded midnight and my phone is amazing. No hangs, gps locks within seconds, the.fix for auto rotate... I can honestly say screw the official update. I for one don't need it anymore. Thank you xda

Thank you to the devs, I agree with the first posters, the community really got me into Android, it's good to see real motherfckers assembling code while Sprint and Samsung got shty thumbs.
And when ya'll get to Gingerbread, beer's on me.

Here's the deal dude

I'm going to go get the evo this weekend because Verizon is or has been to exspensive. I've been doing the proper research for root and I think I got that down for the most part. I gotta say I'm pretty impressed with the amount of roms you guys have compared to the dx. I'm addicted to flashing roms which is very frustrating when it comes to the dx as there is such lack of roms for it, oh well who fukin cares cry your self a river build a bridge and get over it..so here's my question . Can I flash different roms over top of each other??? Like for instance from cm7 to whatever rom. I know you have to wipe data and stuff already. Is there anything important I need to know??? Thanks

As you can see, we have our share of trolls here on the EVO side of XDA but you should be used to that by now coming from DX. These low-lifes are rampant on these forums, just ignore them and you will be ok...
Regarding your question. Technically, if you are flashing a newer version of a rom like say going to CM7 2.2 coming from 2.1, technically you do not have to wipe everything, just dalvic cache but if you are flashing a completely new rom then it's best to completely wipe everything. There is a zip called "format all" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785271
somewhere in the OP in this link, and you can just flash that zip before you go to a new rom and it automatically wipes absolutely everything for you, so you won't have to worry.
I highly recommend you use the format all zip before every rom update or change, just to be safe. And make sure you create a nand backup before hand.
Welcome to the dark side! I'm sure you will love your evo!
P.S if you're looking for roms to try out, particularly AOSP, I highly recommend MIUI. For a sense rom, go with any of Calkulins.
Let me know if you need anything else.

I'm telling you man, do not get into any kind of conversations with some of these folks. Their goals in life are to literally be useless. Ignore them and just do what you gotta do. Don't let anyone alter your decision.
Disregard what the morons are saying about Sprint. Sprint is by far the best value in wireless services. The amount of money you'll be saving will more than make up for any tiny nuisances you'll find with Sprint. Besides, you have 30 days to try out to see if you like it. If you feel it's not worth it to you, just leave and go back... no questions asked.
The EVO is kinda old news now. I would wait for the next big dual core android with AMOLED action. And the number of roms for EVO actually is not all that impressive. Most of them are regurgitations of others. There are a couple of good sense options (although I think rooted stock sense is best) and then there is cyanogen.... which is the best there is IMO... And now it has the extra G.... not that the 4G has been very useful to me.
I average 1.5 to 1.6 Mbps down and 600 to 800 Kbps up.
That ain't bad for 3G.

@OP- Answer to your original question- Yes, you can flash ROM after ROM but you need to wipe in between flashing. One of our awesome devs Calkulin made a script that formats everything completely that is an awesome tool to use before flashing. Makes for a good clean install. You can find it in his mods thread in the theme section.

HTC Evo Shift Vs Samsung Epic 4G *ROOTED*

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

[NEW HERE] Coming from Hero and Stopping to Say Hi

Hey all. I decided against going with the 3vo and went with the 4g (on the advice of a few sprint employee friends). I've had root on my hero since it was possible and finally just got tired of the phone itself. This phone is everything I knew it would be. SOME issues I've experienced but nothing all that bad. GV didn't work at all but it's working now and the voice option on the keyboard doesn't work. Oh well.
Anyways, I'm not at all a dev, but will be happy to give feedback on whatever rom (once root). For those who are working on root options...GOOD LUCK!!!

Wow, so I'm not the only one that didn't fall for the 3-D crap. I just came from the here as well and the 3-D was only an option when I heard about the ram and dual core processor, after I messed with it for a while I was over it lol. Welcome man, its a good step in the right direction. The only way I would even consider going with a 3-d phone is once the whole 3-D option either plays out or gets much better.

Welcome aboard! I just jumped ship from the Hero to the EVO a month or so ago as well

The 3d is a solid phone and it's FAST... In the end ,however, the screen size and the 8 mega pix camera won.
Im going to look to sell my hero (actually i have two) on craigslist since i got kicked off ebay in 2003.

Who all here has bought the bigger battery for the phone? Its not that big of a deal for my to put it on the charger...but the battery life leaves you wanting. Is it worth the $60 from a sprint store? Or would amazon be a better route

Buying an EVO--Seeking Advice

Hey,
I have a samsung epic right now, and I'm interested in buying this evo someone offered to me. I would only be interested, however, if this phone was able to be rooted. How can I check if it is possible or not?

If its running android 2.3.3 and when you load into the bootloader it says "s-on" next to the radio version then its not rootable yet.
Thanks man, really appreciate it.
Also, if it wasnt able to be rooted, I read on the news that HTC was going to release a universal unlocker for the newer phones, will they also release one for the EVO?

The general consensus is that they will not be unlocking older phones so as to encourage consumers to buy the newer ones.
EDIT: There is always of course the possibility that an independent developer will find an exploit and give us the ability to gain root access to our phones. Some devs are known to be working on this now. There's no guarantee of course, but there is hope for those of us who were feeling hopeless.
OK, so the phone has android 2.2, so I automatically assume it can be rooted. Now, can someone recommend me a good rom? I know about cm7 and miui, but what do the devs here have to offer?

I really liked Deck's ROM; lightweight, few issues; great battery life when combined with Tiamat 3.3.7. It's basically CM7 with a lot of the extra clutter (language packs, etc) removed. It looks and acts almost exactly like Android on the Nexus S.
That was my daily driver. I also really liked playing with Synergy; it's feature-packed and has a lot of bells and whistles, and is a fun toy. I didn't like it for daily use, though. I am really into the KISS philosophy when it comes to my smartphone.
And what about kernels? Is there a good choice of kernels to sift through, or for the most part do the roms already come with the best kernel for the job..?

Do alot of reading in the development thread. There is plenty to learn about.

Well that's a question that is dependent on a few things:
Do you prefer physical or virtual keyboards?
Is the loss of a nicer screen worth a bigger screen?
The Epic could be a great phone if it had the developer support that the Evo had/has.
They don't even have an AOSP ROM.
YES, trade, then load synergy rls1, then freedom kernel, for root use unrevoked,

Yeah, I could get by without a keyboard, but i'm just iffy

My personal opinion is that developer support is what makes the phone.
The Epic has a better core for performance and for battery.
If I recall correctly the GPU is better too.
The screen is nicer.
The keyboard sucks [because I hate physical keyboards]
But the developer support, comparative to the Evo, is nil.
Now, there have been signs of an increase in support but with the SGS2 coming it's hard to say how much will come to the Epic itself.
I actually just came from an epic to the evo since mine was stolen (which really sucked I loved that phone) but with the evo I've never looked back. I really liked the physical keyboard since I'm not a fan of soft keyboards but swype and mods alongside a much larger screen make up for it. Speaking of the screen, its no super amoled but its definitely one of the nicest I've used and and the phone overall is just beautiful. Battery is about the same for both in my experience. But like others have said the evo has MUCH better developer support. I remember I was using frozen syndicate Rom 1.2 before my epic was stolen ( back in end of may/ beginning of June) and they still didn't update I believe. Plus Samsung still hasn't released gingerbread for it and its being discontinued October I think. So all in all you should trade for the evo, definitely much better software support especially for a phone reaching its EOL, not to mention hardware (i.e. cases) Plus sense is just great

Ive had both phones, I had the epic then i traded it for my evo<3 which i love so much. I dont regret trading it at all. Personally, i like the evo more it is greater over all
