Hey guys, I've been thinking about rooting my MT4G, but I can't risk getting this phone bricked. I was wondering what the risks are using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858021
I've heard that it can only be truly bricked if you mess with the HBoot or radio stuff. Is this true and what are your thoughts on the matter?
Thanks,
Barrett
The method that's depicted in that link is the "safer" one generally. While there is always a risk involved with this type of thing, you can be safe by following those directions EXACTLY. if you do that, it should be just fine.
There SHOULD be no risks to rooting. But check if you have a good or bad chip first... Because the myTouch 4G is just dumb like that. HTC really messed up with this phone with it's plethora of hardware problems.
I personally think that if you "can't risk" a brick, you probably shouldn't root it. And yes there should be no risks, but with these crazy chips floating around and people not being able to follow directions, there are always risks.

There are always risk when you are tampering with the firmware of anything. Phones, Computers, Routers what ever. If you cannot "RISK" it you might just want to use VISIONary.apk r14 and just leave "temp root on boot" checked.
Read up as much as you can and then read some more, watch some youtube howto videos and if after all that you are still doubtful that you can do it then stick with stock. Its really not as overwhelming as it seems to root a phone though, but it is pretty basic and after youve done it once you will wonder why you didnt do it sooner.
I also agree with these guys. If you cant take the risk, then dont do it. There are people that want to root and those who dont. Then there are people who should root and those who should not. Rooting is only needed if you want to flash custom kernels, roms, radios etc. If your an average user then dont worry about rooting. It will do you no good.
If you do decide to root, then just read and take your time. The instructions are all laid out and have been used many times. When in doubt ask.
Good luck
Thanks guys, I really appreciate all of the responses! I'm fairly certain I'll root, but I am still reading. I'd like to know some worst case scenarios and what I can do to prevent them. What if I mistype something while perm rooting? Also, what are the risks of loading custom roms? Is there always a way to restore it even if your stuck on bootloop? One more thing, how do I know if I have a bad chip and what happens if I do?
Thanks again,
Barrett

Best thing i can say to do as kind of a brick prevention tool is to make sure you flash eng bootloader cause it opens up more options that would be unavailable if you have a problem. If you mistype something it may not be as big a problem as WHERE it is mistyped. I dont think you can check for the bad chip until your phone is rooted. but it is something that can be checked through adb. The post with instructions in how to check the chip is the one that says something about post your emmc serial.
There really isnt any risk in loading a custom rom, other than getting a corrupt file download that wont flash. Make sure you make a backup through rom manager as soon as you get rooted. It will save you bigtime from having to reset everything up after a problem (ie bootloop or phone overclocked to the point of freezing.)
I think there's a high risk of becoming a flash-O-holic!
well, i tried that method several times and i keep getting s-on. good luck with you

I second that, I flash new roms too frequently.

I was hesitant at first, but a couple months later, I went ahead and jumped in. Not too much to be afraid of if you follow instructions. Wouldn't ever go back to a stock ROM and I wondered what I was so afraid of after it was all over.
I try out new ROMs like I'm trying on shirts, its that simple once you get over the initial hump of being a bit hesitant to root a device. There's a supportive community here that will answer any questions you have and chances are- someone has already gone through whatever it is you have an issue with and has a fix. Search is your friend, that's how I got by. Just jump in. All the resources are here and other places on the web.
If you're still hesitant... just don't do it. It's not worth your time and anxiety if you're going to be continually fearful of doing something wrong. This is the kind of thing for tinkerers.... if you're not a tinkerer, just enjoy your phone as it is.
You can check your eMMC chip before rooting by using terminal app. The command is: cat /sys/devices/platform/msm_sdcc.2/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:0001/name

It says "no t found"
cat /sys/devices/platform/msm_sdcc.2/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:0001/name
That is the correct command. Make sure you include the space after "cat". I just tried on an unrooted phone and received SEM04G in reply.

hI,
first of all I don't want to pollute this tread with stupid questions since there are stickies about this phone. I've read them but I still have some questions.
I personally own an HD2 and I'm totally new to a native android device with new rules and new methods of flashing different roms and rooting. So thank you for your patience. My friend wants to unlock her phone and put a custom rom on it.
The phone right now is a brand new T-mobile mytouch 4g with android version 2.3.5.
the most important thing will be the sim unlock.
Now, I'm not asking what the best rom is because it's a silly question, personally I don't link much sense roms for the HD2, so I was thinking something based on CM7, but will see about that.
So I found many guides about rooting and perm S off but my question is, what does it mean? I'm new to this terms, and I really don't know what they mean, eventhough the guide seems pretty simple I want to be sure of not messing the phone up because it's not mine.
My goal is: having root and superuser permission and sim unlock, also to be able to flash to another rom
Thank you very much.
They mytouch comes with a locked bootloader. Basically the bootloader in encrypted with a security measure that doesn't allow changes to the software of the phone. Aka s-on
If you want to flash a new rom you have get passed the encryption which gives you s-off. Follow the downgrade guide to get the phone back to android 2.2.1
Once you do that follow the g-free rooting method to achive full root and similar unlock.
Before you do all of this you are going to want to make sure you have what we call a good eMMc chip (this is where the rom is stored on the phone). Some phones come with a bad chip and will die shortly after rooting cause the phone to be essential soft bricked with no fix available.

also, how did you get android 2.3.5? i thought the MT4G only went up to 2.3.4? O__O
sorry my bad is 2.3.4. I checked the cjip and unfortunately is M4G2DE

I, personally, wouldn't risk it.
Sent from my Google Nexus 12... yep I'm from the future where Apple is no more!
I will see if I can get a replacement.... thank you
I, personally, have the "bad" chip rooted months ago on my wife's Desire S.
The "bad publicity" done for "bad chip" is VERY exaggerated.
There are failure cases. The vast majority are just fine. The ones that fail - have a good chance to fail without rooting, just by normal use.
So I'd root like no tomorrow, and in the worst case - would prepare to get a replacement if it fails. Depends on how many months of warranty you have left. If more that 2-3 months - that's more than enough time for the case of truly bad chip to go bad.
Now you can search the reports for the last 1/2 year or so, and decide yourself.
if you are willing, then by all means root. it's better than being with stock anyway. just keep in mind that the phone DOES have a possibility of bricking, and be prepared for a possible warranty replacement.
I'm brand new to the Glacier, although I've rooted many other phones.
I looked at the guides I could find here, but I was wondering if there is an easier way to S-off + CWM than a bunch of ADB to downgrade to 2.2.1 etc... seems overly complicated atm, isn't there a way to root on GB stock ROM or an easier way in general?
I really have searched, but there is too much info and I feel like some of it may be old, like there's an easier way to root now?
Just wanna flash some custom ROMs basically.
exploit
downgrade
root/unlock hboot/install recov
i duno, it doesnt get much easier than that. its honestly very simple it just takes some time to do.
if you have the stock mytouch 4g you dont need to downgrade as far as i know..
just follow the steps, i just rooted a second one of these with stock 2.3.. took a bit longer but it worked out, the guides here are amazing
ok well I was basically wondering if there was an updated way to do it, but I guess I'll just do the downgrade and go from there.
Thx for the heads up.

Hate to be the bearer of bad new, but as of currently the only way to root the 2.3.x update is to downgrade to 2.2.x then root.
There are two different eMMC chips that you could have in your device. You might want to look at my Noob Thread. I know with a post count of over 3k your not a noob but it has all the links that you'll be interested in.

np I'm actually interested in the answer to this even though I have the good chip.
arg, keep getting stuck on INFOsignaturechecking when I try to fastboot flash the froyo stock ROM
I am very experienced with my Samsung Droid Charge for Verizon, and I am trying to help my friend with his mytouch 4g. Basically I don't know how to do anything on a HTC phone. On Samsung we have a Windows program called ODIN that can flash anything to the phone (stock software, CWM, kernels, ROMs, radios, backup/restore, repartition). Most of the above we also do with CWM, which we get into by holding volume down, home, and power. Are there equivalents for all this on HTC?
Also, are there any fully working AOSP (preferably ICS or JB) ROMs? Sense would be fine just to get the bloat off. Does S-on or S-off make a difference? That is kind of confusing to me. Note that I would want a generally finished ROM that you can just flash once and not look at again.

btw, yes, for HTC Devices, S-Off (basically unlocked bootloader) is required for root access and ROM/mods flashing.

Thanks. Also how easy is it to hard brick this phone? The Charge is nearly impossible, with the only reports of hard bricks unplugging the cable when flashing something in ODIN, or a corruption when changing file systems on the internal memory.

I tried really hard to brick this phone to show my friend its safe to root. No luck lol
Though I did have the good eMMc. Some mt4g's shipped with a bad eMMC which sometimes causes partitions to get corrupt and not Mount correctly therefore rendering the device useless.
Look up failed pu errors on this forum, also there is a tutorial to determine which eMMc your device has.

Yes check your emmc chip to see which one the phone has 50% of the people here will tell you it doesn't matter if u have the good or bad one but its always good to check.
Yes its hard to brick this phone unless u flash a wrong radio because I've flashed from different devices kernels and my phone is still alive..
somehow... but always ALWAYS have a NANDROID just in case and follow the guide Saranhai posted...
Like every ICS / JB ROMs theirs not 1 that stands out to be Perfect they all have their bugs since this device only got Gingerbread but test them for yourself and see which one works the best for your friend and his daily uses of the phone.

Yeah i figured about ICS/JB. We have a cm9 and cm10 ROM with like half the hardware working and then the dev got stuck. What would you say is the best ROM to flash just once and be done with it? I would probably root, tibu, nandroid, and flash the ROM then restore apps.

I think differently. I've never known and don't plan on looking up the emmc on my phone. If I ever had a doubt or fear about anything I did on this device, I probably wouldn't be developing at all. I'd have to say it doesn't matter because at the end of the day no matter what chip you have it should be YOU who decides what you do with your device. Not the other way around.

Those are two pretty good guides. Honestly you have to first read, read and read some more to understand what you have and what can be done with it. Also in development there are answers to your questions under the stickys. Updating your phone would more than likely put it back to full stock status. Also why upgrade to an already 2 yr old software version.
I would recommend fully rooting your phone and the cyanogen method was easier to me. Also remember to google like crazy....

Why do you have two of the same thread?
Listen, here is the deal with the eMMC. Some are faulty, some aren't. If you have a crappy one, flashing CAN speed up the process of the chip giving out. If the chip does goes kaput, though, it always was. The only "bad" chips are the ones that fail. I and many others one here have a glacier with the type of chip people ignorantly refer to as "bad." I have flashed hundreds, perhaps thousands of times and it still works just fine. Understand?

I wouldn't worry about it. Just root using one of the software packages, or do it manually. There are many guides for this. It really is no big deal and almost nothing to worry about IMHO.
The biggest worry is that once you unlock and root, you'll want to flash. Then the addiction begins!!!!!
Just read and do all your researches. Go for it.

did you find that here... This is your first problem if you ask me, you come to xda to ask questions but you do not use the multiple root options that are stickied(for a reason mind you). Try to use a root from another area. Do yourself a favor and read the wugs thread or mskip. No need to go looking elsewhere since its all right in here.
If you have bricked other phone and not sure about what to do then I suggest you enjoy HSPA+ and try and deal with the buttons. Its a great phone and selling cheap now but that does not mean your brick it if you are not sure about rooting.

IMO the only thing daunting in this is the unlock procedure. Once unlocked then rooting, custom recoveries, custom roms, mods, themes, and all else become possible.
When I did it I went old school and used adb and the sdk and did everything manually. I learned a lot on the way, even as I was nervous and worried. I strongly recommend this approach though as it will help you to understand your phone and its operating system. And you also can begin to appreciate the beauty of open-source.
Just follow the directions in the guides posted here at XDA. Go slow. Read. Download the requirements. Be patient. Be meticulous. You will be ok... And if you really don't want to get your hands dirty use one of the 'kits' also available for download here at XDA.

It's understandable, I'm really just looking at which is the best and easiest method since there seems to be tons of options.
The weird thing was I installed superuser just fine then went to install a few roms and couldn't get anything to work..

sounds to me that you are not sure of yourself or have not done enough homework prior to flashing or rooting.. If thats the case leave your new phone alone and just enjoy it. Rooting is honeslty easy and fun but if you are not sure of yourself it could be a nightmare.
Its unlock bootloader run a command to push recovery and flash and su.zip quite simple by original 40 step Evo root procedure back in the days
That's the reason for old school. If you get a handle on the basics of adb your phone is almost indestructable from an OS and software standpoint because you can just return to stock images if things go south a little bit....

My advice: just do it!
The fear will vanish.....
