[Q] Fat32 file system..

Hey guys,
So I recently tried to transfer finding nemo 720p (dont judge me) onto my internally storage of my atrix, however since it is 4.5 gb file, it denies it. I researched a bit and realized its because of the fat32 file system the internal storage has. Is it possible to change it to NTFS. Or do i have to buy a microsd card? if so, which kind do you guys have?

fat32 won`t let you put any files larger than 4gb, and the atrix doens`t recognise ntfs, so even if you get an sdcard and format it, it still won`t work. You could try to get in SD, won`t be the same quality, but I can tell you it works fine

Re-encode the video at a lower bit rate so that it ends up being smaller than 4GB, it'll be lower quality but no worse than taking some SD version instead.
EDIT: The PenTile screen's graininess will add "detail" that gets lost with the lower bit rate anyway.

He could always ext3 format the card and copy thinggs over in linux

Here's wishing android gets XFS support! Lol, but srsly, ext3 works on droid?

Well... it'd probably be more believable than NTFS, since the Android OS is based on Linux last time i checked.

Moving Files & Folders to Ext sdcard from Internal storage

I searched and have been trying to move files to external sdcard from the Internal storage on my galaxy Note 10.1. I came across on the google play a file manager called File Manager HD (Tablet ) I have successfuly transferred files from internal to ext sdcard without any issues, reason i have been trying cause i have the 16 gb version and was also concerned about space now i wont have to. Hopefully this will help you if you are:worried about your internal storage. nI prefer the White than the Grey

The 16 gb space limitation really is only a problem for people who want lots of big games on their tablets. I have about 200 or so apps on my tablet and have barely used any space at all. I keep all my media files and backups on the external SDCard.
I have a12 foot HD projection screen at home hooked to my computer. After youve played Dirt 3 Racing on a 12 foot HD screen anything on a tablet just seems silly. Luckily this means 16 gb is more than i'll ever need

Yep and thd gamers can use App 2 SD and GL to SD to move the massive downloaded portions of the games to external storage. Saved me a ton of space.

Are 16GB enough for you?

I've a Nexus 7 3G/32GB that I'm selling and I've just ordered a Gt-n5100 but I'm very scared about hdd capacity. Note 8 is only available in my country in 16GB format so I had no choice but since all apps are installed in primary memory and not on SD card now I'm asking to myself if I did a good buy. What can you tell me about this? Are 16gb enough for you? I changed my previous nexus 7 16gb (poor memory) for the 32gb version and it's true that they haven't SD expansion slot.. Do you think SD could solve the problem in any way?

I came from a Nexus 7 32gb, via a Note 10.1.
Unless you are a hard-core gamer then the 16gb is plenty sui long as you supplement with a micro sd card on which to store your media files etc.
The Note 8.0 is definitely the better device by a good measure, congratulations I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Having the microsd slot helps a lot. I have a DROID dna with only 16gb and I wish it had more. Games and media take the most space on a device. Media can easily be store on the microsd.

16 GB is more than enough for me. I really only use the tablet for the note taking function. But even my 16 GB Galaxy S4 with a large medical library downloaded to the device, still leaves me with like 4 GB free. And I have all of my music stored on the main memory. If you move all of your personal data to SD, I don't see how you can run out of space on the main memory, using it just for apps and app data.

16 gb is to little for me to store my music and movies. But hey this is Samsung you have sd card slot

I hope that you are aware The advertised 16 GB is not the actual available capacity.
The fact is that on Galaxy Note 8 you will get around 9 GB for personal storage only on internal SD card as factory default (rest consumed by the default apps etc).
I had to add a 64GB MicroSd card (almost full already) and that gives me some room for stuff.
All depends on your usage but if you need space frequently , you cannot go wrong with an additional 32 GB micro SD card.
btw this tablet should also support the MicroUSB flash drives. so I would not worry much as this has room for expansion if need ever comes to that.

On my AT&T LTE Note 8 with 16GB internal memory I find that after loading all of my apps (76) and with the Samsung and AT&T apps and the operating system and TouchWiz I have 9.2GB free internal memory. This agrees with your findings.

No. 16g is not enough. Real dopey amount of storage for a tablet like this.

You cannot just say 16 gbs isn't enough. it's very subjective. On both my phone and tablet, even 8 gbs would've been enough for me. I don't play games or store moves/music. I use Slacker, Netflix and read news/magazines.

agree completely; I put a 32 gig external sd card to store music, movies, and pix...I have over 100 apps on here, and still have 4.5 gigs of main memory space available..
plenty of room IMO...

The issue here is games. Clearly Samsung aren't factoring in gamers to their target market for this tablet. The gpu - the Mali 400 is evidence of that. The minimal amount of internal storage also shows Samsung don't expect N8.0 users to install more than 2 or 3 triple A titles at most.
'The Bard's Tale' alone is 3.5GB. 'Horn' is 2.7GB. 'Max Payne Mobile' is 1.4GB.
Bam, there's all your space gone, with hardly anything left for productivity apps.

no offense, but I doubt that any tablet is marketed specifically for gamers; they are more for business professionals/email/magazine/web surfers...
Hard core gamers use consoles or gaming pc's generally, and those folks dont think of tablets as effective hardware for them..

If we actually had 16GB it might be enough. On first power up you only have like 9GB to use...kind of false advertising.

So factor that into the design so that when you advertise a 16GB storage device people actually GET 16GB off storage. I think there is already a class action lawsuit against Samsung for the S4 due to this issue.

as you well know, EVERY device/tablet/laptop/pc maker pretty much says the same kind of thing when it comes to advertising the "size" of their machine; you know that a 2 TB computer never really has 2TB of "available space" on it, since the os/swapfile etc has to go somewhere, and this is how electronics have been sold for a long long time.
I'm not saying I dont agree with you, but I dont see this kind of "unrealistic" advertising od device space/capacity changing any time soon..

Well, if the class action lawsuit does enough damage and more start being held to task, it might change. I also get what you are saying, but the criticism of Samsung right now is that it's not just 1-2GB out of 16GB...it's almost half. In other words, it is unreasonable and excessive in it's advertising. So as much as I've been a Samsung supporter over the years, I hope they get beat pretty bad and start to change this negative pattern.

if it's like the s4 then it's got a reserved 6GB partition (at least i read that somewhere). so they should advertise the useable space and the amount of memory shared for the video.
why they don't let you do a fresh install like any pc is beyond me. tablets have come too far to be still treated as less than a computer.
i'm still on the fence about getting the 8. i keep adding it to cart at amazon and then closing the tab. i almost got it at walmart after seeing the box and falling in love!

there's alot to love with this tablet..nobody who has seen one or bought one has anything bad to say about it...

I would like to see the Apps2SD stuff come from the Galaxy S4 or a setting to use the card in place of the internal data mounted as the sd card but yes, it is enough for me.
I would have bought a 64GB or 32GB model if possible but as games are the only big local data I have - I could use the card or a usb drive if I needed to have offline access to movies and music and such. Everything but games lives on my local server or in a cloud service; often both. So I can live with the storage.

[Q] Expanding Internal storage

OBB data on SD card
I'm using 32GB sd card on 16GB Nvidia Shield..
There is option to move apps and games to sd card.. The OBB data won't support only the application apk are moved actually to sd card... I know this issue is seen from kitkat when Google blocked app to use to sd card.. But in lollipop it was reverted.. So now is it application developer that they are not using sd card or its the OS limitation?
Because games OBB data take all the inbuilt storage... Any solutions for this?

Was this fixed in the 1.2 firmware? They specifically state something about the apps moving to sdcard.

tested this the other day after the update. I installed a 2.6gb game and moved it to a 64gb micro sd. It moved the entire game. i have 2.6gb on the sd card and no storage missing from my system. Nvidia is killing it with this system!!!

Yes they are, I am not used to such support.
After the update I noticed all of games on sdcard did not show up for about 5 minutes. I wonder if it moved everything over for me or if I have to remove and reinstall each game?

Nope it's only an option for the Micro SD slot. You cannot put apps on any USB device

500gb version has a hybrid drive with a small flash storage combined with the HDD. It's a good option I just thing the 16gb version with an SD card is more flexible and may perform better in the long run

Looking at the pictures on the nVidia slides, do you know if it's possible to open up the casing and install a 2.5" drive yourself ? I might have an old 2.5" drive somewhere. Looks like a drive bay with a regular SATA connector, like the PS3 or PS4.

I believe I read the non-Pro version does not have the connector available. There IS a spot for a surface mount connection, but that would take some semi-experienced soldering.

I'm interested to know what the people who went for the HD model are storing on there? I stream all my media so a 64gb Micro sd would probably be more than sufficient for apps and android games. If the markup to the HD model was $50 it would be a no brainier, but $100 is a bit steep. I'm guessing we might see a price drop in upcoming months. The device is definitely to my "to get" list, im UK based so will import via amazon

I don't know if the Shield tablet is the same but even though I use Foldermount to move game data to external SD, I ended up maxing out my internal storage since it still keeps some of the app internally along with my other apps. If the move to sd option on the shield TV does the same, then eventually you will run out of internal memory. But from what I'm reading here, it moves everything, so you might be ok. The problem with my shield tablet is since I'm out of internal memory I cannot update any of my games and large apps unless I make more room.. So I decided to go with the 500gb with the shield TV so I don't run into any issues later. I'm also going to download movies so I need more room.

I believe it does more the whole app now buddy. I do understand the need for local storage if you'r storing films and other media on there. Its just for my use case I have a NAS device plugged into my wireless router and just stream everything from there. Getting a NAS was the best purchase I ever made and I would recommend it to anyone. I think it was like $100 and them I just dropped a 4tb drive in there. Instant network share and streaming for all the devices in the home.

I got the 500gb. After owning the Shield Portable and then the Shield Tablet. I did not want to got through the lack of storage again. I did not like moving apps to the sd card since it is much slower storage. Also I used my refund from the Beats Pill XL recall so it was an easy choice of which Shield version to get.

I for one don't like the idea of the OS running off the hd of the 500gb model so I bought me a high performing micro sd. This one has read/write speeds up to 90mb/s.
I have yet to test its performance off of the Shield console but I've read these cards perform around the max speeds on the Shield tablet.

I bought the lexar 128gb rated at 95mb/s for my note 4, and using A1 Sd benchmark I only get 46mb read / 17mb write. I will side load that app to my console and see how the card does compared to the 500gb drive.

You have to be careful when looking at these micro SD cards and their write speeds. A lot of them just say "up to 90MB/s", but never specify if that is read or write speeds until you dig through the tech details. I also came across the Lexar first, but noticed that the write speeds were very low, which actually seems to be the norm for most 128GB cards at the moment.
The only two I would recommend is the above Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB, or the Samsung 64GB Pro. I actually just bought the Samsung tonight as a used Amazon warehouse deal for $36, still facotry sealed.

Only card I recommend anyone buy these days are the Samsung Evo cards. I have had zero issues with them. Plenty fast. I record 4K straight to the card all of the time without any glitches.
I'm actually running an older sandisk extreme 64gb in my shield right now because I had it living around. Had problems in my LG g3 with it but it is working flawless in my shield... Go figure.
I'm also running all of my video and emulated roms off of a 64gb usb 2.0 stick from sandisk. Works great

How much useable space on 128GB version?

Hey guys I was looking at my storage space today and i noticed I only have 111GB useable. I know that several GB are consumed by the system image and that the whole 128GB is not available, but 17GB used by the system image seems excessive.

you usually get 119GB after format, 128 x 7%, 119GB remains then OS partition and then more since its 64bit.
My 64gb has 54gb free
They define GB by 1000 where it's really 1024 so formatted capacity is less,

Same here!

The larger the amount of storage, the larger the system partition. Dunno why, but it has been this way as long as I can remember.
