Hi this is my first post to xda, even though i have been following for quite a while and have learned alot.
the issue i am having is, my camera button has stopped working. i cant use it to take pictures or open the camera, but it does seem to work with the vol. down and power to boot into boot loader.
with that said, i am thinking the button itself is not broken. I mean the button feels fine when you push it, it has the soft touch for focus and then the final push to take the picture. I have flashed tons of roms and it used to work. I cant really pinpont exactly when it stopped working.
i would live with this problem if there was a way around using the camera button in clockwork recovery, but from what i have read, there is not.
i want to install rooted GB. to do this, i need to sbf back to froyo (which i can do now), then flash the leaked GB .595 or .596 which you are probably aware of (without the camera button, i cannot perform the 2 part install).
Has anyone else ran into this problem? I read in another forum that someone else had a unresponsive camera button, they installed the Verizon OTA GB and the button worked again. I have tried this, it did not work for me. But if it worked for someone, there must be a way to fix it. I just have no idea myself. Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction. Maybe even create an update.zip to correct the issue (i know this might be asking a lot).
Thank you.
i have the same issue. i can use it to boot into boot loader, but then it doesn't work. I can't use it in the CM recovery menu nor to activate the camera or snap pictures.
I called verizon and of course they said its defective that it needs to be replaced. But if somebody knows how to deal with it without replacing the unit please feel free to post your ideas.......please?
This is a hardware issue, and to my knowledge, there's nothing to do to fix it.
I'm sorry to say, but I believe you need a replacement
I had to do the same thing too. There are lots of reports of defective camera buttons on the X. And, there is no way to use CM Recovery with a broken camera button since you have to use it to make your selections. Believe me, I looked for workarounds and found none. Fortunately, there is a year warranty and I received a replacement the next day after calling Verizon. The replacement was already on GB, so I just SBFed it back to .340 and went through the P3Droid upgrade process. Finished up by restoring my apps I made with Titanium Backup (the replacement X doesn't come with an SD card or batter, you use your old one). Now I have an X with a working camera button.

I for the life of me cant figure out why my camera is completely dead! I have FULLY wiped all caches, everything under 'WIPE' via AMONS and even formatted my SD card as well as trying an alternate SD card(both 8GB--C6speed)--never had a problem w either card on ANY ROM...ALL OF A SUDDEN the past 2days my camera goes to a FULL BLACK SCREEN,when pressing the CAMERA icon. Occasionally the taskbar will remain uptop but will timeout when screen display shutsoff. Now if i launch CAMERA via DESIRE ROM(KING),ill get the notice about clicking trackball to resume camera but as soon as i click it,the message dissapears and the screen will go back to black screen again...and repeat. I SWEAR i have DONE MULTIPLE COMPLETE WIPES AND REFORMATS so im left to believe its THE HARDWARE itself! CAN ANYBODY PLEASE LEND ME A HAND IF the similar problemhas occured...On the Nandroid backups that ive restored from FULLY FUNCTIONING bkups,if i launch NEXUS TORCH it will say CANNOT ACCESS LED---this is THE ONLY info besides the "camera wake message"mentioned earlier that i can provide. Thanks in advance and pleas edont flame for NOT being in Q&A bc this is more of a DEV related restore question.
**oh and BTW--I DID TRY TO INSTALL the DESIRE R2 cam fix and does nothing. I tried it when all was working fine early in the week and it did nothing to help FLASH timing for me,so i NAN restored back to prior state and CAMERA continued working until about THURSDAY night--regardless--PHONE is in OUT OF BOX STATE--MINUS UNLOCKED and it STILL doesnt work!---PEACE and Happy Mothers Day to any Mothers out there in XDA world!

Your hardware has malfunctioned. Contact HTC for a repair.
1. you may have a broken camera, try a stock rom
2. your caps lock button is definitely broken
3. you posted in the wrong section

1. i should have known you were from Philly and cant read--I TRIED STOCK ROM
2. CAPS is to put highlights on key terms so idiots dont read over the fact that I DID TRY STOCK ROM---see how that helps?
3. Thanks for your informative responses---any suggestions from CAPTAIN OBVIOUS how to get service on a ROOTED device without being charged full price on the phone?? Ahhh--thought not!--So i tried here to see if anyone else had similar situation. AGAIN-thanks for your help as well SERIAL TOON--geez
If it's a hardware failure they won't charge you.
I think it will help if you go through Google Cust service first...they will end up redirecting you to HTC repair. Provide all truthful information on your issue, proving that you have done some legitimate trouble shooting and they will realize that it is a hardware issue, not the ROM flashing or bootloader unlocking that caused the problem. Someone else on the xda forums had a rooted phone with bluetooth problem and was able to send to HTC for repair for free...with a 4 day turnaround!
Good luck!
What do you base this on...Heresay?

I didnt intend to sound rude,im just a little pissed right now..I Only ask bc i already had an issue in January days after receipt of phone. Issue was solved by sending me a new battery bc other was causing random shutdowns (ive since forwarded this info to another XDAmember that had exact same issue and they give him replacement phone at 1st but issue continued to occur--i told him about my story after he posted his problem, he contacted them this weekend and confirmed with me today that a new battery was on the way..see my public IM's for info). Anyway, when i was dealing with the battery issue they said they would definately NOT be able to fix under warranty bc the phone is rooted and unlocked. I can attest to the few people on here that said theyve been successful in such cases, but either way,IVE ALREADY STATED that i tried the DESIRE R2 camera kernal to see if that helps,so im not going to be dishonest and tell them i havent tried anything other than custom roms. Again..positive suggestions or similar experiences with warranty info would be appreciated....trollers looking for a funny post or to degrade people can eat one!

Thanks JOSH, ill look into it tommorrow--as i stated tho--i feel im being dishonest for trying the DESIRE R2 cam and saying that they should cover it---uninformed people will assume THAT couldve caused it,even though i used phone afterwards for a few days w no side effects
Hey Milton, like others have mentioned in here might want to try flash back to stock and seeing if the problem persists. If it does then your looking at a hardware problem and you should contact HTC/google for repair.
Yea...i was thinking that from get go--(hardware prob). Im on cheesy STOCK ROM right now and have been for cpl hrs...but its obvious its gotta be hardware...NOW comes the crappy part of trying to explain it to HTC when attempting to get an RMA!--Yee Haa!
MOD PLEASE CLOSE OR DELETE---THANKS!
Milton, among the items on the very small list of things folks around here want in return for helping you is that you lay off the caps. Doesn't highlight anything that you'd want to highlight.

Okay,,,this is weird!!..My TORCH hadnt been working at all either, the whole time ive had the camera problem. Now ,the torch will work for ONE TURN ON, then if i launch CAMERA, the cam still doesnt work. i have to HOME and HOME only to get back to home screen..BACK ARROW does nothing except vibrate, indicating touch response. If i then re-launch TORCH, it doesnt work....!??SOMETHING is ODD--and im split whether its hardware- or some sorta SYSTEM file that stays stuck even after all STOCK FLASHES and everything!--again,reminder..the LED TORCH hadnt worked up until this point--unit has NEVER been dropped, slid out of pocket from 1foot high onto superthick carpet,so i doubt its a loose internal cable...Hmmm...

That seriously hurts my eyes to look at. Try using proper punctuation and grammar. It's very simple and still gets your point across.
As for your phone. Call Google which will probably have you call HTC. People have gotten their rooted devices fixed for free if it's a genuine hardware problem and nothing caused from the rooting process.

You should send it to HTC for repair. Charging fee or not, but thats the only option to you right now because its a hardware failure.

I was thinking the exact same thing, don't know where he must have learned how to type. Then you criticize people from Philly, or whatever its called somewhere, for not knowing how to read. I would say mirror that advice and learn how to type.. type properly.
Torch will work until camera app is used then it wont work again until i reboot. After reboot, torch will work ONLY on regular/lower setting. MAX brightness will not work. Toggle back to LOW setting and torch will work again. Im going to try what DOUG suggested bc that is the only thing i havent tried yet...but the way torch and camera are acting up and requiring reboots keeps me willing to try software tricks first...WHAT ties the TORCH's HI setting to the camera app adn yet keeps the LOW setting seperate!??..ill try the TORCH dev real quick for some insight on how the two work hand in hand. Thanks for anyone using their time to help instead of criticize. Sorry for mocking ones ability to read but i was quite [email protected] time bc i lost a major function on my phone. My apologies to all

The attitude, hostility and the caps are not welcome here.
Along with the others I have no sympathy for you. Learn proper grammar and get a better attitude.
Troll much? Go tell your mother happy mothers day if you have that much time to pull up old posts from people asking questions in a 'kernal forum' about basics. Basics that anyone should know, if not they stand a much better chance on damging their phone. It wasnt being ignorant. Since you know everything there is to know about everyones posts, tell me where the topic dealing with my specific camera issue has been previously posted and ill be glad to read and search thru that forum. I wasnt the one asking questions about something mentioned in the OP (uh oh i used caps--oh geesh-someones gonna be saaad now!)and numerous pages before. Im sorry i dont spend all my life on forums to know that only words approved for caps are indeed CAPITALIZED. Petty little boy-and by the way, i was trying to stress your good advice by typing your name in caps so people would credit you with the help-Sorry to have taken your precious time sir. Good day.
Hi,
A couple of months ago my power button completely stopped working on my Nexus One. After a bit of googling I saw this was a common problem for some users.
I worked around this problem by using the Trackball Wake feature in CM6 and when I actually need to turn on the device I use the "battery in & out while plugged in" hack.
I want to upgrade to CM7 and as usual I'll have to do a complete wipe. This will cause the "trackball wake" feature to go back to default which as I recall is off.
I'm also worried about various problems during the install that would require me to boot back into the bootloader which is impossible w/o a power button...
Any suggestions?
(Except "get a new phone". I'm in Israel and new phones here ain't cheap. a Nexus S for instance costs about 1000$ off contract.)
Thanks.
1) Buy a new power button board from eBay and fix the phone / give the phone to someone to fix.
2) Talk to HTC customer service in US (or where you bought the Nexus - I guess from Google?), open a ticket, ask for replacement phone, open account in advance on www.usaddress.com or such, give them the usaddress account address, send them the phone marked with your ticket number and S/N, document yourself sending the phone, wait till you get the phone by mail.
There is nothing much you can do. If you get your ROM to crash before ADB daemon starts running, you won't be able to get to recovery - and bootloader won't help you.
P.S. Don't upgrade to CM7 just yet. It's not nearly stable enough, and it causes most launchers to crawl.
There is a button to reboot into recovery directly on cm6

He's talking about a case of FAILED installation.
I don't see how you can't do it, but in a very rare case, yes it could end up bad.
Just make sure you check md5, and most people have upgrade w/o wiping anything at all. Even if you do wipe it, just flash everything and the first time that you boot up, go straight to enable trackball wake.
You can get into fastboot no problem, and from fastboot you can boot into recovery:
fastboot boot recovery.img
(or whatever your recover file is named)
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Yes, if he's fastboot-oem-unlocked, then it's a possibility.
Thanks a lot!
Fixing the power button is too much messing with hardware for me, and fixing it costs about 80$..
What I'm basically getting is that in the ****ti case I do have some error during installation I'm screwed but that it's a rare situation...
Would you risk it?
I'm seriously considering selling it (2nd hand hi-end phones go for about 400$ in Israel since buying a new one is much more expensive due to taxes) and having someone from my work bring me a new Nexus S (I work in a startup that also has an office in NY)
BTW, I called HTC regarding this problem and they've said that rooting / installing custom ROMs voided the warranty... Is that not the case?
Thanks.
If you ask me - CM7 is nowhere near completion state, and I kinda regret moving to it. Mostly because of launchers that don't support Gingerbread yet (both ADW and LauncherPro lag like hell with 7 screens), because of wonkiness (can be cured with Dewonkifier app, but still annoying), and because I need to compile it myself to get battery percentage. If you use GO Launcher or don't use many screens, don't mind installing Dewonkifier, and don't mind not having battery percentage - you can install it.
Read multiple threads about warranty on XDA. I've recently got my friend's phone exchanged, in exactly the same setup as you have (office in US).
You shouldn't need a power button using Clockwork recovery. Best method is to install Rom Manager. It will install the latest Clockwork 3.0.0.5 and allow you to download CM7 stable as well as GAPPS.
It is pretty fool-proof.
Later versions of Clockwork only use the trackball for selecting and use the back button; I think you can also use VOL+/- to go back also.
If you want to be safe, download several roms to your SD card. Perhaps CM6, CM7, and whatever else. That way if one rom fails, you have another option.
Clockwork also has the options to mount the SD card directly from the recovery menu, so you have the option of downloading roms on your PC and transfer them over to the phone.
I'm sending my a500 into acer to get the power button fixed and i have to revert it back to stock before I do. Is there any way of doing this automatically without using the recovery method and needing to select options with a power button. I tried using this EUUs_SBK_Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 and it detected my custom rom but nothing showed up under new image version and wont let me continue.
any help??
btw I'm on honeycomb lightspeed 2.1 with honeyvillain 3.7 kernal right now.
My power button broke a few months back. I just popped it open and soldered it back onto the board and I used a glue gun to fill the gap behind the power button casing so it won't get pushed back anymore (I guess one too many hard pushes screwed mine up.) Haven't had problems with it since.
Hope this helps.

too scared to open my iconia , did a ps3 the other day to fix the YLOD that was piss but yeah feel if i open the iconia a little gremlin with 9 arms will fall out lmao
Just send it in to Acer. They probably won't even say anything about it. Especially it being a PWR button.
The thing about "if you root you lose warranty", is hogwash more or less. In your case, you can stand your ground as it's a physical defect.
I haven't heard a whole lot of stories from anybody who returned their device, even if it was rooted and such, and got a hard time from the service center. In fact, I have read cases where people got a replacement tab, and not only was it rooted, but already had a custom rom installed!!!!
Just send it in and don't worry about it. The thing is, with your older version of CWM, and not the touch version, you're pretty well up the creek. Unless you want to go the NVFlash way. Now that we can definately help you with. You should be able to NVFlash a stock recovery image. In fact, I believe the Acer Recovery Installer on the market, may be able to flash a stock recovery. Might want to check it and see if it will boot your tab to APX mode automatically. I haven';t used it before, as I prefer the old fashioned way (involves the PWR button)

when the button broke my first instinct was to tear it apart and fix it myself. but then i found out I'm still under warranty so i didn't see any point when acer will fix it for me for free. if it happens again i will definitely do this. Thanks.

That's great to hear. i wasn't sure how acer was about being rooted. i know with my sprint phone if the service guys wanted to be dicks they can black flag it and it will void the warranty on that phone entirely, and I've read cases of this happening to people. I'm just gonna do a factory reset and send it to acer. I'll update this thread when i get it back.
also, i did install the stock recovery and tried to flash a stock update.zip but every time I'd get the android guy with the exclamation point next to him, then it would reset (i think it's cause its from the wrong rom?). i had a real hard time finding a stock rom with a good DL link. almost everyone i tried from that link in my first post (and from google) had bad download links. i only got like 2 to actually download and neither worked. but it don't matter now cause I'm sending it in rooted anyway. thanks for the info.:highfive:

Yeah, some of the "update.zips" are a little ify-ify on whether they will work or not. One that works well is an EUU rom. But this requires you enter your UID number for it to continue (a good idea to copy yours down when you get the tab back). Of course it's for a a500, but will install on an a501 also. Usually we use this to reset partitions from a failed NVFlash.
Keep us posted. Sprint folks can be real peckerheads sometimes.

*UPDATE*
So I got my tablet back from acer today. I sent it in rooted on a honeycomb lightspeed rom and I got the same a500 (I put a little mark on it) back on a stock 3.2.1 rom. So they don't really care about root as they still fixed the power button. Thanks for the heads up on that one Moscow Desire. It's funny cause my 1 year warranty would have ended on August 15, 15 days from now lol.
I think its time for some ice cream sandwich.
Hey guys,
I just recently upgraded to the latest CM10 jellybean build on the forums here, but now my accelerometer is acting up. The only current way to make it appear properly portrait is to hold it straight out; parellel to the ground. If I hold it normally, it thinks I'm holding it sideways and flips the orientation accordingly.
Is there anyway to reset the accelerometer? I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=816131
But, the file they want you to delete(ms3c_yamaha.cfg in /system/bin) doesn't seem to be present on my phone. Is the file different under ICS/JB? My phone is a Vibrant from T-Mobile, if that matters.
Thanks for any idea on the situation.
That file only exists as far as a know in official roms.
As for a solution i believe you need to go back to an offcial rom as clear storage etc, has not worked for people with the same problem.
That's what I was afraid of. My phone seems to be possessed, it has so many issues when upgrading roms that no one else runs into. I'm just going to flash it back with Odin and leave it as is.
Thanks for the information!
So, this problem has been plaguing me for quite a while, and since I'm stubborn, I've mostly just lived with it.
This issue itself is the power button. It is incredibly wonky with how it works, and it happens across all the roms I've tried. It will often just not respond to presses, refusing to do anything at all. It can also lock it too fast, locking the device on button down and not letting me access the power menu. The rom I'm currently using is the 12/2 CM11 nightly, but it's happened with both AOSP and TW roms ( I haven't tried stock admittedly).
I am not convinced it's a hardware issue, since after a new flash, or sometimes if I change random settings or uninstall an app, it will go away breifly. Everything will work fine for maybe 3-5 minutes. After I leave the device alone or wait long enough though, it resurfaces. I've eliminated the possibility that it's a user app problem (besides any gapps), and I haven't flashed any new kernels so far.
Device is the tmobile variant, please let me know what info y'all need me to provide, or any forum rules I'm breaking, or w/e. I wish I knew how to just get hardware event logs to see what is intercepting the power button calls or w/e is happening.
Well if you believe it's not a hardware issue, then try formatting the whole device to pretty much 0.
(External SD card will be helpful)
1.Get twrp recovery
2. Make sure you make a backup just in case
2. Click on wipe then format disk then type the yes then format.
3. Wipe all the other things too system/data/etc. Except external SD card that you would have on a fresh ROM and gapps, why not try fusion 5.0 lollipop? Its cool and it's not KitKat so thats something to try different that might work
5. Install and see how it is
If it was a software issue, it should get fixed.
P.S. If you got no external SD, you can still format, but it would take time to copy apps from PC .. I would restart twrp then use s5 toolkit on PC and push files to internal SD.
Oh, I should probably update this. Well, as I was reading this post the other day, my microusb port cover fell off, so I decided to just get tmobile to replace it instead of troubleshoot something that may actually be a hardware issue. A firend of mine that makes s4 roms thinks it's the power button flex cable anyway. Thanks though!
