Hi,
I'm not sure whether it's good thing to open one thread related to two problems but I haven't got better idea how to put it.
Main problem:
Since I have acquired my GT540 I'm still searching for the solution for reverse tethering. My operator doesn't have decent data plan, quite often I'm out of any wifi range and currently I'm completely out of wireless.
So I'm left with workable USB connection and Bluetooth. Which leads us to...
Secondary problem:
I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835912 and solution proposed there is quite feasible to me as usbnet still seems to be song of the future and I'm using Linux on the host PC anyway. But when I tried to implement it, I learned that PPP is not enabled in my kernel, which understandably derailed my plan. I use CM7 by Mur4ik.
The question then is, can I somehow painlessly enable this PPP support?
Or could someone politely nudge Mur4ik to enable it in the next release of SwiftDroid? (I don't have sufficient rights to post in devel forum myself)
Or, is there another, working way of getting net access for my phone?
Cheers.
So, you don't have Wireless Adapter or WiFi to put on your desktop and share the internet?
I have tested to share the PC internet connection via USB to GT540 and i never did it...
I bought a WiFi AP and now I use the GT540 with Wireless on my entire house, i think its better than USB.
As I mentioned, sometimes I have wireless access but recently I'm stuck without. Besides, in this most recent cm7-m6 adhoc networking doesn't work either.
Yes, I think too that having wifi coverage in home is nice but the problem I stated is what to do WHEN you don't have it.

OK HERE's THE SOLUTION. Thanks to everyone who made the great tutorials available to us :
http://hydtech.wordpress.com/2009/09/14/how-to-connect-to-ad-hoc-networks-using-tmobile-g1-android/
The important part is to tweak the windows part - you need to tell the broadband/adsl internet connection to share itself to the Private wireless network (the network manging your Wireless adapter). If you are having trouble with the windows part (say you connect and have full bars on the phone but no access to web) google ICS (internet connection sharing) in windows and you should get it working.
*Important notice: AdHoc will drain your battery very fast (1hour tops)
Maybe one of the reasons they disabled it... If you cant cope with taht - get a router. I'm cheap and I'm using it like that

I've not had any issues tethering to my Laptop, you can use either aNetShare or Wireless Tether for Root users. Best to connect the G1 via miniUSB too to your laptop to save battery while in use.
I tether at hotels or on my travels to write posts etc although the main sites I visit I can just use the G1 anyway.
Ooooooooh this is for tethering, via I remember using the AdHoc method my ex-iPhone.
I thought it was a way to activate adhoc so the phone could connect to any adhoc connection. Like when I tried to connect my G1 to my friends N95 so I could use 3G connection (yeah got very bored in class one day )
Hi, im in need of some assistance. I have a new android device, the Archos 5IT. my phone is the Tilt 2. i have been unable to get my tilt 2 tethered to it thru wifi. reason being that the xda wifi router app uses adhoc mode. the archos will only see Infrastructure connections. Someone on the archos forum said the HD2 has built in a wifi tethering app that is infrastructure mode. Can someone plz direct me to that app or another wifi tethering app that uses Infrastructure mode only? also, free apps...lol thnkx in advance i figure if i download that app, ill be good, and wont have to take this device back. plus its giving me probs trying to connect thru bt also. lol FIGURES
If you can't find a free one, I recommend WMWifiRouter (v2 and above). It lets you connect multiple devices via Wifi (infrastructure style) and Bluetooth, as well as work as a USB modem and a USB Wifi dongle.
If you have Omarket installed, just download "Mobile Wi-Fi Router." It works GREAT!
Sorry about reviving an old thread. I've been searching and trying to find this exact solution, but neither of the ones listed here are doing "Infrastructure" mode. I'm currently testing WMWifiRouter (v2.0 - build 1502, downloaded directly from their site today) and when I set up the wifi connection, it only gives an option for Ad-Hoc (or none - which is for connecting to another access-point).
Am I missing something with WMWifiRouter, or is there any other app at all that will do Infrastructure mode? I don't mind having to buy something, I just need it working.
Thanks!

Sorry if I am not clear with your issues above.
But, Winmo 6.5 in HD2, has a native wifi tethering application.
There is an option menu (in Comm Manager) to turn on the Wifi Router.
This will make your HD2 as an Access Point. It can accept 5 devices.
Cheers..
Yes but only in adhoc mode, not in infrastructure mode, which appears to be needed for connecting some devices like psp and my new HTC flyer!
Same problem with GT 10.1 and HTC HD2
I have the wifi router program but it's not working with my galaxy tab 10.1, how can i tell if its adhoc or infrastructure signal?

Hi, I am researching this as well, and here is what I have found so far.
1. Android does not currently support/connect to ad-hoc WiFi, only Infrastructure mode.
2. If your Android tablet device can not see the WiFi from your phone hotspot but a PC Can, then it is probably ad-hoc, as my WinMo HTC HD2 is.
3. I have an Asus Transformer tablet with Android 3.1 and this can not see my WiFi from the WiFi hotspot settings, but my PC can see it and connect to the HD2.
4. If there is an Android ROM for your phone, (XDA Forums) that will run from the SD card, you can boot into that and use the WiFi hotspot (Tethering) from the Android ROM. This seems to work fine on my setup.
Hope this helps
really would rather not root if at all possible
since i live in fear of ending up with a very expensive brick (by messing up rooting my xoom) - has anyone come up with a way to make the winmo htc hd2 send out an infrastructure wifi signal?

Simple answer is no. Winmo 6.5 will not do infrastructure wifi hotspot, no matter whether native Winmo app or a 3rd party app (i.e., WMWifirouter). You're going to have to do what I'm doing with my HD2. Go thru the learning process of installing an Android build on your SD card, and then boot into Android. You've very little risk of bricking the HD2 if you read carefully and follow the guides. [However, these guides are definitely written by geeks, not editors who write and re-write to be explicitly clear.] Supposedly, the Android Wifi router is infrastructure, but I've not yet gotten to that point in my own process. The first one I tried to install (AmeriCanAndroid) didn't complete booting up successfully, so I tried another Android build (MIUI), but in it I'm not finding a wifi tethering app. And, in it, the Market app is crashing. So, I'm now on the search for a 3rd Android build. The payoff is big (wifi tethering to my Viewpad 7 tablet), so I persevere. Good luck to you on your journey.
hello,
i would like to know if it is possibile to share my pc connection with my htc legend:
the problem is that in my room my laptop get the wifi but not the phone because it has a really really bad antenna, and i dont want to use 3g data, is it possibile to share my connection from pc to phone? it should act like a wifi repeater or something no idea thank you
A while ago I was looking for the same thing.
Although technically an easy task, it's not yet possible with Stock Android. There is a Google Code forum page confirming that Android as of yet can't see and connect to Ad-Hoc networks. There are some wifi-tools in the market that can at least show them, but none can't make your device connect yet.
Some ROMs seem to have added this option, if you plan to root and flash. I just added a cheapo router, problem solved. ;-)

Do you want to use your phone's internet for your pc? Then yes- it's possible with apps. (called tethering. search for wifi tether or usb tether in market or on xda...)
if you want to use your pc's connection - then probably not.

no i mean i donot have a wifi modem and i have adsl net modem and also with respect to battry problem in hd2 i prefer to use net with prob connection but many of builds did not have the internet pass through option
for this aim i like to know that is it posible to add this option to that kind of build as a for example apk software
I have the same issue, having the Internet Pass-Through function (which uses PC's connection on the phone) of Desire HD builds on the Desire builld would be great.
yap
its easy you can use your pc's wifi and turn it into a access point
and then using it trough the wifi
can't be easier than this
see,you left out the most important part: problem is that not all of the pc's have wifi!!!
There is also USB tethering, although you'll have to check if there's any builds with it working.
I don't bother with it as I use wifi tethering instead.
The program Connectify is working pretty good, to use my netbooks LAN connection as access point. Always use it abroad when in hotels without wifi and only wired internet. Works only with windows7 though.

I really feel the need to help the OP here. I don't have an answer to his question, but I do understand what he's asking for, and other people seem to be answering different things!!!
He want's to use a USB cable (not wifi) to allow his phone to use his PC's internet connection.
Tethering is irrelevant (that's using the phone's internet connection on the PC) and he does not have a wireless router so cannot use wifi on his phone.
In response to the OP, the only thing I've ever seen as a conclusive answer is that this cannot be done (there is no software that currently does it). That was an answer on a website from about 7 months ago though, and I am aware of the option on the Desire HD, so there is obviously a way to do it now.
I hope you find what you're looking for

IN the revolution HD 2.2 mdeejay NAND version - you have this option built in in this rom !!!
i used it - its working.
USB tethering is part of the Froyo OS. The problems you may have are that it does not work correctly with a lot of builds. Most of the HTC builds tend to work though.
Hmmm.... I also have the same problem.
I don't want to use the 3G Data connection for internet because it's expensive so it would be really useful to get internet through usb from a computer.
So far I only saw this option on M-Deejay's Revolution HD rom and for me it was kind of a heavy build. Worked kinda slow so I flashed a different rom which doesn't have the usb internet pass through.
I also tried Connectify. My phone connected to the computer's wireless but the internet didn't work. I tried disabling my firewall, opening ports, and other things but it just doesn't work. I think it has to do with the software not supporting all WiFi cards.
So now I'm having trouble getting on the internet with my phone to download apps. I have to go outside and look for some WiFi networks to do it and that kinda sucks
I think it finally works! I installed the latest Connectify beta version from here:
http://connectify.blogspot.com/2010/11/connectify-211-beta-up-for-testing.html
And it kinda works now! I think it's just a bit slow.

Hi Guys,
Firstly, I hope this is posted in the correct section.
Secondly, My name is Mark, and I've followed this site/forum for a few years now, and have successfully rooted 2 old phones (HTC Nexus One & HTC One S) thanks to all the information and guides right here on xda-developers.
Thirdly, is my issue: (the back-story) [tried, tested & failed alternatives]
At work, we've recently invested in a WiFi Internet Radio, to take advantage of the tens of thousands of stations compared to the 20 or so offered on DAB/FM. Getting it connected to the internet however has been a struggle.
The offices Wired & Wireless LAN networks are locked by a pin, which nobody knows, or will give out, this network is for official business use only, by the companies own equipment. Also network tabs in the computers control panel are blocked, so these pins are completely unobtainable. There is a WiFi hotspot nearby, this is setup and ran by "The Cloud" (aka Sky). When we try to connect to this network directly from the radio, it asks for a pin, however to use these hot spots you have to register a username & password on a browser to be granted access, again, not possible with the radio. 3G/4G is very limited in the building due to the location of the building, and (we think) a chrome window tint that runs all the way around the building, We've tried, the radio can find and connect to the phone, but the phone can't connect to the internet via 3g. Even if 3g was good, it'd be very data consuming to be running radio over portable WiFi hotspot for 52 hours a week.
So what I want to do, if it's possible, is to share my WiFi connection (to the hotspot) over WiFi or USB (to the radio), using my phone as a WiFi repeater/modem in between. Or perhaps there's another alternative I've missed? I'm not overly sure on the ins and outs of usb modems and other networking hardware.
The phone is a Sony Xperia Z2 (currently not rooted, but willing to root if needs be to make this work)
The radio is a Roberts Stream 93i (has WiFi, ethernet & USB)
And in case anyone mentions, there is a STRICT ban on phones, ipods (and anything that connects to the internet) due to the confidential nature of our work, if this wasn't the case we'd just of bought a pair of speakers and streamed the internet radio on our phones.
Thanks for your help, I've been searching high & low for 3 straight days now!

is the radio for the employees to enjoy, or is it being hooked into the building for customer/clients?
if it could be considered to the benefit of customers/clients, just get in touch with IT and see if they have a solution for you. (creating an exception on the netowrk for the radio, maybe?)
If you are simply trying to fly under the radar, and get the thing running, then it sounds like you might be out of luck.
so, you are saying plugging it into an ethernet port, it won't obtain access to the net?
plugging it into a known working port, it also won't work?
you could, try bringing in your own wifi router, plugging that into an open ethernet port (wan) and then see if it grabs net through that.
as i read your previous post, it leads me to believe that there is a PIN you need to input for WIFI & LAN... kind of strange for LAN
