Solution: Connect G1 to Adhoc (Laptop WiFi) - G1 General

OK HERE's THE SOLUTION. Thanks to everyone who made the great tutorials available to us :
http://hydtech.wordpress.com/2009/09/14/how-to-connect-to-ad-hoc-networks-using-tmobile-g1-android/
The important part is to tweak the windows part - you need to tell the broadband/adsl internet connection to share itself to the Private wireless network (the network manging your Wireless adapter). If you are having trouble with the windows part (say you connect and have full bars on the phone but no access to web) google ICS (internet connection sharing) in windows and you should get it working.
*Important notice: AdHoc will drain your battery very fast (1hour tops)
Maybe one of the reasons they disabled it... If you cant cope with taht - get a router. I'm cheap and I'm using it like that

I've not had any issues tethering to my Laptop, you can use either aNetShare or Wireless Tether for Root users. Best to connect the G1 via miniUSB too to your laptop to save battery while in use.
I tether at hotels or on my travels to write posts etc although the main sites I visit I can just use the G1 anyway.

Ooooooooh this is for tethering, via I remember using the AdHoc method my ex-iPhone.
I thought it was a way to activate adhoc so the phone could connect to any adhoc connection. Like when I tried to connect my G1 to my friends N95 so I could use 3G connection (yeah got very bored in class one day )

Sharing a WM ICS connection in a Wifi (adhoc) network

I figured out that using my Imagio as a WiFi Router drains the battery faster than it can charge. This is bad for a sometimes day-long connection using low bandwidth sites (live blogging for hours on CoverItLive.com).
Typically, I use the Imagio when WiFi isn't available, or is flat out ridiculously priced ($thousands in some convention centers).
I have to work with my partner, who also needs a connection, and sharing it would be oh so convenient using WiFi. So I thought, why not share my Imagio's connection by using Internet Connection Sharing on my computer through the WiFi. Not so fast: all ICS uses a fixed IP of 192.168.0.1. Conflict city when you try to use ICS twice in the same daisy chain.
"So", says I, "why not use Network Bridging to accomplish the same thing?". Well, this works in getting the signal to my partner's machine. She can internet beautifully. But, it turns out, my machine can't access the Internet anymore so long as the Imagio's ICS is bridged to the machine's built in WiFi. Take it out of the bridge, it works on my machine but not my partner's. Put it in the bridge, it doesn't on my machine, but it does on my partner's.
Anyone have any insight as to how this can be accomplished. Imagio ICS via USB to computer A, computer A's Wifi set in ad-hoc mode to be used as a router to get Internet to computer B, both machines being able to access the Internet.
Also, USB-Modem works with ICS on the laptop, but it uses dial-up, and the problem with that is that if you stop using it for a certain period of time, it loses the connection, which can screw up things royally. ICS is much more consistent.
There has to be a way that bridging can be used without taking the Imagio's ICS out of that computer's universe.
None of this would be a problem if she got a WM phone instead of the LG Touch (which requires a hefty monthly plan to use it as a modem).
Thanks to any who know more about this than me or have some other ideas.

You can configure ICS on the phone to use a different IP range (probably also possible on the PC but don't know how).
So then you can use Phone->ICS->USB->ComputerA->ICS->Wi-Fi->ComputerB
WMWifiRouter uses 192.168.3.x instead of .0.x by default. I think this can also be configured using ICS Control.

I use WM WiFirouter, it is a great program with multiple different configurations. I use it at home on an old IPAQ hooked to my PC as a wireless router so my kids can use the internet on their laptops.
WM WiFi Router was my first choice. Note the point I made that the battery drains faster than it can recharge. This becomes something of a problem after an hour or so.
Sadly, I got the connection sharing option to work now on the laptop using ICS control, but it seems to disconnect the WiFi ad-hoc network. And doesn't actually share through the WiFi. I suspect this is a problem with the way the WiFi on the laptop works, since I had the same problem with Network Bridging, and had to run a Dos script to enable the WiFi. It only works when bridging is being used, so I have to find the equivalent for when bridging isn't being used but ICS is.
I don't suppose anyone knows anything about *that*?
EDIT: I just downloaded the latest version of WMWifiRouter, which has USB connection support and seems to be a whole lot more reliable in general. AND IT WORKS with connection sharing, the laptop WiFi works as a router, and it DOES solve my problems. Thanks for the suggestion that made me reconsider it again.
EDIT +1: Still uses up the battery faster than it charges. Not as fast as WiFi though. WMWifiRouter is a pretty amazing connection sharing tool kit with USB, BT and WiFi connectivity and lots of control without the weird IP address pathologies. Amazing that it also gets around my laptop's weird connection sharing WiFi pathology as well. Another nice thing is the "keep connection alive" ping feature, and the real time power status and information. They really try to pack a lot of useful stuff for your $20.

[Q] Tether instead of wifi???

Just wondering if there is a way to tether to a computer with a wired connection to get Internet connection that way, instead of using wifi??? There is lots of apps and stuff that need to connect to the internet to download, but I dont have the wifi's at home.
And if not, is it a hardware limitation, or software???
Handset in question is an Acer Liquid E
I've seen others ask this question & not get an answer that they wanted.
I'm not sure if its hardware, software or just lack of developer interest to create an app to do it.
The simple fact of the matter is that you can pick up a cheap router for $20 that'll solve the issue for you. It's not the solution you want, but it might be the only one available to you.
Heres another thread, it might have suggestions (or updates) that will be useful for you:

you are right that is definately not the answer that Im looking for, as i have a good wireless router, but i live with a Internet Nazi that doesn't want to have wireless in the household.
But thanks for the link, I'll definitely check it out : )

The best I can recommend is having a wireless card in your laptop and creating a ad-hoc network, but if I am not mistaken, the ad-hoc network is not supported on a android device.
You could always do a quick search for some software on the internet that support it, but good luck with that.
You could always convince the internet nazi to use mac address filtering on the router to ensure that only the devices you use are allowed to connect.
Don't know anything about your phone, but both WM and Android phones gladly hooks up to a comp using USB-wire (which is faster than any wireless).
WM6.5 have a program icon called Internet sharing something.
while Android got a pay/trial app called Easy Tether that for the same job.
Be aware that some provider do not allow hooking-up a computer on some cellphone plans, call your provider and ask them.
Using both a X10 Mini(Android) and a M1i Aspen(WM6.5) connected by wire both for file transfer peer2peer and Internet access.
Also there are Bluetooth and a possibility to remove the memory card from the phone and copy files to it in a card reader on a computer.
PDAnet
The only thing I can think of is an app called PDANet on the market, you do need internet to download it on your computer, but if it's a laptop, just take it to a wifi hotspot, like Starbucks or something and download the computer app, then tether all you want
PDAnet
No need to go to a wifi hotspot with the laptop to get the computer drivers for pdanet. You can do it right from the phone, it will download to your sdcard then all you do is mount the sdcard to the comp via usb and open the .exe file, load the drivers and start tethering. Only thing with PDAnet is you cant access secure websites with the free version. But it is an AWESOME app non the less.

Do you want to use your phone's internet for your pc? Then yes- it's possible with apps. (called tethering. search for wifi tether or usb tether in market or on xda...)
if you want to use your pc's connection - then probably not.

no i mean i donot have a wifi modem and i have adsl net modem and also with respect to battry problem in hd2 i prefer to use net with prob connection but many of builds did not have the internet pass through option
for this aim i like to know that is it posible to add this option to that kind of build as a for example apk software
I have the same issue, having the Internet Pass-Through function (which uses PC's connection on the phone) of Desire HD builds on the Desire builld would be great.
yap
its easy you can use your pc's wifi and turn it into a access point
and then using it trough the wifi
can't be easier than this
see,you left out the most important part: problem is that not all of the pc's have wifi!!!
There is also USB tethering, although you'll have to check if there's any builds with it working.
I don't bother with it as I use wifi tethering instead.
The program Connectify is working pretty good, to use my netbooks LAN connection as access point. Always use it abroad when in hotels without wifi and only wired internet. Works only with windows7 though.

I really feel the need to help the OP here. I don't have an answer to his question, but I do understand what he's asking for, and other people seem to be answering different things!!!
He want's to use a USB cable (not wifi) to allow his phone to use his PC's internet connection.
Tethering is irrelevant (that's using the phone's internet connection on the PC) and he does not have a wireless router so cannot use wifi on his phone.
In response to the OP, the only thing I've ever seen as a conclusive answer is that this cannot be done (there is no software that currently does it). That was an answer on a website from about 7 months ago though, and I am aware of the option on the Desire HD, so there is obviously a way to do it now.
I hope you find what you're looking for

IN the revolution HD 2.2 mdeejay NAND version - you have this option built in in this rom !!!
i used it - its working.
USB tethering is part of the Froyo OS. The problems you may have are that it does not work correctly with a lot of builds. Most of the HTC builds tend to work though.
Hmmm.... I also have the same problem.
I don't want to use the 3G Data connection for internet because it's expensive so it would be really useful to get internet through usb from a computer.
So far I only saw this option on M-Deejay's Revolution HD rom and for me it was kind of a heavy build. Worked kinda slow so I flashed a different rom which doesn't have the usb internet pass through.
I also tried Connectify. My phone connected to the computer's wireless but the internet didn't work. I tried disabling my firewall, opening ports, and other things but it just doesn't work. I think it has to do with the software not supporting all WiFi cards.
So now I'm having trouble getting on the internet with my phone to download apps. I have to go outside and look for some WiFi networks to do it and that kinda sucks
I think it finally works! I installed the latest Connectify beta version from here:
http://connectify.blogspot.com/2010/11/connectify-211-beta-up-for-testing.html
And it kinda works now! I think it's just a bit slow.

[Q] Share existing WiFi conneciton (not 3G) - is it possible?

I'm wondering if it is possible on the phone running Android 2.2.
For a laptop to share it's WiFi connection (basically turning it in to the access point) it is not a problem.
There is a free soft for that, for example connectify (http://www.connectify.me/).
I couldn't find anything for Androind along the same lines, though. There are tons of apps that do WiFi tethering (sharing your 3G/4G over WiFi with other devices) but nothing on sharing WiFi.
Here is a use case.
You come on vacation with family. Everyone has a gadget that needs WiFi. The hotel Inet access costs quite a bit. So you buy one access pass and share it so that everyone (in your family) could use it.
As I said if you have a laptop it is not a big deal but this is not always the case.
Im not sure but I would assume usb tethering would do this for one laptop. But no you cant have multiple wirelss connections.
This only works with 3G unfortunately. I haven't ever seen an app that does that with wifi.

Wifi Connection shared as a Wifi Router

Hi,
as there are no threads about this (i havent found anything), i will post a new one.
my main question is: is it possible to get a wifi connection on your phone and share this connection at the same time through wifi (so you get a wifi hotspot or whatever)? (android, windows mobile, windows phone -> whatever, got a HD2)
it works on multiple computers with windows 7, but i never got how to do that with ma HD2.
hopefully,
sallal
EDIT: forgot the [Q] thing, sry

they're are many apps that can do this, just search WIFI tether in the market (android), IDK about WM7 though.
For android you can also run CM7 which has tethering built into it. I use it and it works like a charm, it's fast too.
Sorry for my question ,but with this program i can use my tablet as a router?
I have 3G so i can use this connection for internet and WIFI for make my tablet a router?
the app allows you to "tether"/use your device as a router. SO yes.
The are CMInternetSharing package that is used to share internet connection from a Mobile (that we get using GPRS/3G) as a WiFi Router to others...
If you have a WiFi Connection that your mobile is consuming then what is the need for re-sharing same connection from mobile?
Let me know if I am not sure about the question
Thanks.
Am no expert but i think this is true...
A wireless device can either be used as a client or as a router, you would need 2 wireless interfaces to do what you are looking for. When the tether apps start they configure your wireless interface as a router... I dont believe it can be running as both types at once.
but you most defenetly could use your 3g or whatever cell signal you have and offer it thru a wifi interface, you must have root access.
Cheers
maybe there is a way
you could switch the wifi with a 3g lookalike so 3g uses your wifi and then download a wifi tether i am looking for this quit a time and i diddn't found anything but this is al theory
I do it with a stock app of my device, it's calls "3g mobile's wifi point"

hmm that would be a thing i should look at...
i always used on windows 7 "connectify me", a program made for taking wireless internet connection or LAN and sharing it at the same time as a router.
the virtual wifi miniport is used for this i suppose.
maybe there is something like the virtual miniport to manage in windows mobile or android?

It works great on my HD2 with WINMO
sir,i have already mentioned.....try "mhotspot" easily converts ur lap/pc into wifi hotspot(n/w will be detected by android mobiles, worked for my ACE) its better than connectify because..we dont need to install it..and soo we can over come protocol related problems and system instability issues
