Hi,
as there are many questions in in many threads regarding whether a ROM allows using the camera or not, here is some help:
The Defy is delivered with two (as to the date of this post) camera sensors, one with a GREEN lens and one with a RED one.
To identify which camera you have, some capable and friendly members took photos which show the difference:
GREEN lens:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12694642&postcount=31 by Quaza and the first two photos of
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14330238&postcount=10 by zakoo2
RED lens:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12699552&postcount=34 by viper. and the last three photos of
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14330238&postcount=10 by zakoo2
So if in doubt, please check your lens before asking.
BTW: With the newly released Gingerbread SBFs the camera will ONLY work on Defys with the RED lens. This might be due to the fact that these releases target a successor device of the Defy AKA DefyPlus, Defy+, MB526. With these leaked releases, the camera on GREEN lens Defys might NEVER work, because the new device will probably not be delivered wit a green lens.
EDIT: As noted below, the lens color alone is not a reliable indicator to identify the camera module. It seems to depend on the camera module, not the lens itself, whether recording works or not. Please read the very informative post 2. The problem, however, only exists with the leaked MotoBlur SBFs (2.3.3, 2.3.4), not CM7 based ROMs.
To find out the module of your phone you can try the method explained by martin.flory on page 4 of this thread:

Easiest way I found:
1. Install this free app. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nolanlawson.logcat
2. Open the app
3. hit home
4. open camera
5. exit camera
6. open app
7. search "CameraCommon".
8. Either or
I found out I have the SOC module, which sucks.

"With the newly released Gingerbread SBFs the camera will ONLY work on Defys with the RED"
It not absolutely so. Color of the camera doesn't influence record possibility. Record possibility is influenced by the camera module. The camera module can be defined in ADB.
If you have in logcat(app of ADB) after boot
D/LibCommonCamera( 1837): CameraCommon: Detected SOC device
- this is old camera module - this camera might be green or red
If D/LibCommonCamera( 1837): CameraCommon: Detected BAYER device
- this is new camera module - this camera might be green or red
It is inspected in practice

To prove this.. Does anyone with phisically green lense able to flash 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 and having working camera regardless of date of device manufatured??

I have readed something about the size of a taken pircture, that the green (old) one have smaller file size, like 500 kb to 900kb , and the red (new) ones have about 1mb to more.
This is true???
thanks

First it's Russian. But it is for 720p patch video recording (if I'm not mistaken), of course everyone can use it regardless your camera lens colour.
I don't think any green lenses can run stock gingerbread 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 like those red lenses owner having it right after flashed.
But it may work too I wouldn't surprise as some brilliant developer might just crack it for good.

I am almost certain i have a Green lens [ March 2011 ] and can also confirm with the 720p Record zip i can record at 720p but at the time of playback the video seems like i recorded it in a dual mirror mode hard to explain almost like everything is out of focus and mirrored .
my camera looks green ( from outside) but stil can use MIUI 1.6.3

is there any place we can buy BAYER camera module for defy?
I find this interesting. I have a Defy from Nov 2010 with a Green lens, B04, that is running 2.3.4 Cyanogen with no problem. Camera has no problem either.

We tell about official 2.3.4. On cyanogenmod all camera's work well. On official 2.3* work only bayer modules.
This is irrelevant. The issue is only with the leaked SBF for 2.3.3 GingerBlur.

I agree. Those modded rom like custom CM7 and custom Miui will work on all Defy regardless of the camera module/color. One must know to put on test with leaked official stock 2.3.3 or the leaked official stock 2.3.4 and see if it working. Up until now only camera with red lenses Defy would work on these leaked stock rom.
I repeat that workability of the camera on of 2.3.3 depends not on color of the camera, and from the camera's module

OK.i will test it my defy .it has yellow lens.
Oh crap, just received my new defy. Good news is that Android 2.2.2 is installed by default. Well, good, I am not sure, it may makes installing custom rom more difficult than with a 2.1 flashed with Nordic froyo.
But the camera is more greenish than redish, and with starting photo application with adb logcat, SOC device got detected :-( :-( . Does it means that an "official" gingerbead and, more important, an unlocked bootloader is out of question for me? :-(
You may to buy BAYER camera from service place. Costs about 40$.

The bravo's camera is awful. My mom's flipside has a 3mp camera and it takes much better pictures than my bravo. Is there any way that can be improved? I saw on defy that they made it to where the green lense could record 720p? So maybe its possible on the bravo?
replace it with defy's camera, what will happen?
I'm not really a tech guy. It would be interesting though
It is said, replace camara sensor with defy's,flash MB525'S rom, Camera quality will be perfact.
it is said, but any brave souls willing to go under the knife?
i replaced it ,something goes wrong.the color of image looks ugly, purple. camera can't save the picture to the device.

So, is that the end?
Will someone else try it?
There are a few threads on defy- camera, here's one for defy+.
The camera is so bad, that I cursed the phone right after I took a few pictures. My Samsung spica was taking better pics with the 3,5mp sensor without flash and low light. Even on a bright sunny day the pics are lacking detail and have some noticeable noise. On low light - there is more noise than picture
I have applied the 720p panorama tweak and nothing.
So, as I expect more from a 5mp sensor, here are some questions - is there a way to tweak the camera, so the noise in low light becomes less(possibly none) and add some more detail to the pics, can we expect some quality improvement in an update some day, or should I sell this crap and buy xperia neo V?
If you need proof for my complains - I'll post some pics.

try another apllication for taking photos
use camera 360 for excellent photos
Done that too. Even lg camera and vignette don't do the job. There is some .bin files about camera in system/etc, but I don't know how to handle them.

The same problem here. I had Defy normal and camera was quite good and photos was really sharp but now I have Defy+ and noise is extremely bad. Yesterday I flashed it with 4.5.1-134, 4.5.3-66, 4.5.3-109, MS2Ginger 2.1, and CM7 7.1.0-11 and I was trying stock camera app, HDR+, Vintage Pro and this one in CM and best picture I had from stock camera from 4.5.3-109 but it was really, really worse than stock camera in Defy normal.

The normal defy you mentioned, did it have red lens or green lens?
I also saw a thread saying red lens actually needed more tweaks to take better photos since its more capable...not sure where I saw that.
Guess I wont swap out my camera module on my defy to a red lens.
I did some tests with different settings of the camera. There is something wrong, and I hope it's software, but not hardware. There is noise even in pics taken in a bright sunny day. I can't believe motorola would put such an incapable sensor in our phones. I also noticed that normal defy with green and red lens take better pics. 5800 is even better.
Can someone dig in the camera driver or something. Or we make some noise to motorola, so they fix this joke.

It was green (soc) Defy.
Attached files shows differences between Defy Normal on Green Lens and Defy+ but only on HDR+ cause I don't have more photos from stock camera so Picture B shows differences between CM7 camera in Defy Plus and HDR+.
Pic 1 - Defy Normal HDR+
Pic 2 - Defy Plus HDR+
Pic 3 - Defy Plus CM7 Camera
Pic 4 - Defy Plus HDR+
Does touch focus make your pictures better?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272525
Nope, noise appears where ever it is dark, or where ever it is brighter. If it's not in the middle of a sunny day - the whole pic is on little annoying dots. Nomatter with or without autofocus.
Yes, the first what I noticed on Defy+ is, that pictures are rly bad. Not in the normal light, but where is a bit dark, there is huge noice. Even my HTC D2 was taking pictures better...hope, that its just some sw problem.
I noticed that when you hold the shutter and focus, the view is much brighter and clean, than the actual image taken after that. As if the focus is lost at taking the shot.

I don't think green lens Defy can record 720p. It can record upto WVGA. Check this link - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154215.
What about MS2Ginger?
I was able to record 720p only with stock or MS2Ginger firmware; not sure about CM10 but I found it horribly sluggish thus had to revert on OS 2.3.3 base

MS2Ginger also cannot record 720p on green lens Defy. @ajaxodessa, CM10 performs best when installed freshly from sbf stage.

I've found that there is 720p support available.
As per CM10, fighting with sbf_flash under OS X but looks like I'll have to install Linux to "SBF" my device.

Green lens users are basically handicapped in choice of ROMs. They can MS2Ginger and CM10, but it is difficult to make the camera work in builds meant for red lens.

Yes, red lens supports 720p. Have a look at your lens closely, you will be able to see the colour. Or, if you have confusion, then refer to the thread in the Dev section

Look at the top video, at the 1:02 mark it shows a motion camera and depth sensor on the bottom. There is a separate 4MP camera on the top. Maybe LG figured out a way to combine both the motion/video camera and regular point and shoot camera into one lens. Just thinking out loud...
http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3-teaser-trailer-dissected/news it says that circle of red dots is infrared low-light autofocus? Is it? Infrared is so powerful to beam through tens of meters?
I would think that it is far more likely infrared focus rather than this tango tech.
Focus I think, Tango now should be like asking a flagship to do alpha

Flash for a camera unit is designed to compensate for the warm and cold images that a camera captures. Gcam that u downloaded doesn't know that as your stock camera does. So what u can do is only post edit the pic to make it a bit cooler.
