[Q] Any way to restore My Apps in Market? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Nookcolor with MN 4.5.25, 1.1 overclocked kernel. I had the market problem, but 4.5.25 cleared it up. It worked fine for a week or so. Then yesterday all of "My apps" disappeared from market except the several I paid for. I did the 4.5.25 market fix several times and the rename Vending.apk fix a couple of times, no cigar (I'm aware of the risk of appearing insane, so I won't keep doing the same thing over and over, at least not too many times). On the desktop Android Market, my account, "My Orders" shows only these same paid apps and two free apps (with no rhyme or reason as to which two, except both have been uninstalled by me). If this isn't clear to you, I am talking about the list of the apps I have downloaded on market. All of my apps are working fine on the NC.
If I find the rest of my apps on Android Market on the desktop, all are marked "installed". But they simply will not appear, no matter what I do, on the NC or on the "My Orders" screen on the desktop.
Short of downloading each again (my time, ambition, patience, and data allowance are limited) how can I restore the apps to list on "My apps" on the NC and "My Orders" on the desktop?
I have a Titanium backup taken a few days before the failure. Is this information kept in some data area in the NC and sync'ed to market? Could I restore an app or that app's data and get my apps back in sync? I hesitate to restore everything, as I am beginning to believe that I am digging a hole.

I haven't resolved this problem, and am still waiting for suggestions. In the meantime, an additional problem. Whenever I install a new app, downloaded in the standard manner from market, market will then appear briefly when I try to load it again, then disappear. I then have to restore the market.apk with Titanium, after which i will work again until the next time I install an app. I will now see in the my apps section the same several paid for apps plus any additional that I have installed since the problem first occurred.
Please help if you can. I would like to fix this. DaveD

I'm running CM7 off SD card. Tried the Power and N button combination, with no luck also tried selecting reboot into recovery mode from CM7 desktop.

Since no one else is responding, I'll give you my recommendation based on limited experience. I like Titanium, and after installing it quickly paid for the Pro version, for the simple reason that it allows multiple backups, which I consider necessary in any backup program. I don't know about backup pro. But overall, among the two dozen or so apps I run, both free and paid, Titanium Pro appears to be the highest quality of them all.
Regarding rebooting into recovery mode, I don't know how else to reboot . See the next item in this thread for additional info on that.

Well, since no one is either interested enough or can help, I took the plunge and fixed it myself. If there is any interest, here is the only answer I could come up with.
First, I tried selectively restoring system apps with Titanium. I ended up restoring 20 or so. All that did was got me deeper into it. At the end I could no longer download apps--it would come up with the infamous "starting download" and that was the end of it.
So I decided to start from scratch, attempting to revert the Nook to it's original 1.1 out-of-the-box unregistered version. I followed the directions in the Nook Wiki (don't remember the two items and don't have time to go looking, as will be the case with a lot of the explanation below). I started with the ADB interface and entered the reboot failure 8 count from the desktop, upon which it rebooted, but did so into ClockWorkMod recovery, and recovered to the MN 4.5.25 system I was trying to get rid of. So, ignorant as I am about how all this works, I did the eight reboot failures manually, same thing, same thing. Now, I guess I could have gone in and uninstalled ClockWorkMod, but didn't think of that. So next time I tried it (third), I had recovery reset all data and cache. Then when I rebooted I was in NookColor stock 1.2, without rooting. But every time I tried to get back to out-of-the-box 1.1, I entered recovery again.
Now, withe the expectation that I could reinstall MN for the express purpose of killing ClockWorkMod recovery, then go about following the directions in Wiki which should work, I MN'ed it. Upon reemerging into MN, market worked! So I installed the 1.1Ghz kernel, and started reinstalling the apps, which I am still doing. No need to go back to the 1.1 clean level, as far as I have seen. Some of the old apps are still there, but most are gone. Again, no rhyme or reason as to which apps. But it works.
I could reinstall the old apps from Titanium, which I did for Dolphin merely to get the latest Beta 5.0.6 back and for the bookmarks, but for the most part am reinstalling from market, as I need for market to be aware of the apps I have.
Bottom line, it is much easier to wipe the Nook (provided you get ClockWorkMod out of the way first) and reinstall apps then to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out how to fix a market problem. Market is nice and solid with 4.5.25; I hope it stays that way this time (I don't know what caused the original failure, but I am highly suspicious that it was operator error)! I guess a clean wipe and reinstall to 4.5.25, including an overclocking kernel and apps, will take an hour or so, less if you reinstall apps from backups.

titanium pro is the only way to go. buy it!. I had back up pro before and had to uninstall it because it would not reinstall from time to time. titanium pro always works and with the pay version you can batch activities not like the free version where you'll have to do it one by one. anyway, if you restoring with titanium pro remember to restore apps only and not the data. you don't want to pass on bad data to your fresh flash.
with the market did you try to clear cache in application manager? sometime this will help. go to settings / application / manage application / view all and scroll down to market and clear cache and data. I also think you'll need to clear cache and data with google services framework, but I forget, not sure.
for flashing nighties (only if you're going from cm to cm) all you have to do is wipe partition cache, not data and wipe dalvik cache and flash your new nightie. all of your app will be there. I hope this helped a little. good luck.

Cannont re-install apps from after rooting

Hi,
I recently went from stock RC33 -> RC29 -> RC33 JFv1.43. However, I found that once I finished the procedure, I could not re-install any of my old apps! (They all got wiped going from RC33 -> RC29 using the DREAIMG.nbh file).
If I go to "My Downloads" in Market, it remembers all the apps I have installed previously, but they show up as 'FREE' instead of 'Installed'. So I click on one, then click the 'Install' button, approve the security dialog. Then I watch the download status, it goes from Starting Download... to Downloading... then I don't even see the usual yellow progress bar, it goes straight to "Download Unsuccessful".
I've only tried a few apps, but so far all the apps I had previously installed cannot install on this newly rooted & wiped phone. I tried installing two random apps I never installed before, and they came in fine.
Mainly I want to install MyBackup from reware because I had backed up a lot of stuff before rooting, and I want to restore it to save me the hassle of reinstalling all my apps.
I tried re-wiping to see if that would help, but no luck, same issue. I've tried with and without a SD card in the phone as well, no difference.
Anyone else have this issue, or have any suggestions to try to fix it?

Now this is weird...after waiting a while (it's been a little over 24 hours since rooting), I can now re-install applications. But MyBackup is still failing...and I need that one
Interestingly, My Downloads no longer shows the applications I previously installed before wiping, so maybe I just need to wait a few more days for MyBackup to be cleared out of My Downloads, and then I can reinstall it?

[Q] Nandroid restore– Clockworkmod – Starting Download hanging..

Every time I try a new ROM and try to go back to my backup I made on Nandroid in Clockwork-mod regardless of when the backup was made everything works fine but find out that I can’t download anything. Gmail works, I will get notices that updates are available but it hangs at starting download.
I have tried to clear cache, use WIFI, everything else I can find but the only solution is to Odin and start all over..
Any suggestions about what I can do?
This is my first Android phone after leaving Apple - is this what I should expect?

From one novice to another, have you tried uninstalling the market from the stock application screen? Not titanium backup or rom manager, but uninstalling the market from your stock applications is safe, all it does is remove your temp market files, not the app, you simply launch again, accept the tos again, and you're back in, hope this helps.

apps and new roms

when ever i flash a new rom all the apps that i have installed even ones i uninstalled start to download in the market ?? any idea how to fix this maybe even wipe my maket history beside my paid apps and i just started using lex lite 3 and im getting random reboots

Funny, I recently reflashed fission rom and experienced the same thing. I thought about playing with the "detach from market" option in Titanium Backup.
Ultimately I just manually stopped all the downloads and proceeded in setting up my accounts and batch restoring my apps via Titanium.
I think this happens when you first sign into Google after you boot your new rom for the first time. I skip logging into Google, and then it doesn't download all the apps right away. later I set up my google account and then go into the market and reinstall what I want.

Problems with a new CM7 install

Hey guys. I've had it with MIUI. and i'm ready to switch to a new rom. i figured now was as good a time as any to try out CM7. So i downloaded the latest stable version, backed up my existing install and flashed. The phone got stuck at the bootscreen. I assumed it was because i neglected to wipe data and cache, so i went back, wiped everything, reflashed and booted into CM7(after an extensive wait)
Everything was running great and i just finished restoring my apps with MyBackup. I was getting FCs on a few apps, but i chocked it up to CM7 not having all the components that some of those apps require. I was about to start removing the offenders when the phone crashed and went back to the bootscreen. It sat there for 2 hours before i pulled the battery and restored back to MIUI.
In short, i really want to try out CM7, but if it's going to be this unstable, obviously it won't cut it. Am i doing something wrong??
Some apps just do not play nicely when being restored from a backup. Can you restore apps 1 at a time so that you only get the apps that you know work? Then re-download the apps that are causing problems.
Possibly. That seems like an unnecessary step though. Would a rom really crash because of app incompatibility? I thought they would just FC every time i tried to run them, not blow up the whole ROM.
If you are using ROM MANAGER you can try to use the utility for "Fix Permissions". I'm sure there is a way to do it in the recovery them selves, but the process escapes me.
This is not an uncommon requirement when restoring from one complex ROM to another.
I had some quirkiness restoring a few apps with Titanium backup. I ended up just reinstalling them from Market and haven't had issues since. Also, after restoring my contacts with Mobile Backup II, I could not edit them from the phone. Force closes. Had to delete them and re-sync with Gmail and exchange server. No problems after that.
I have flashed Synergy, Swagged Out Stock, SavagedZen, and a few others and always wandered back to CM7. In my experience, whenever you switch ROMs like that, there are always quirks, so I have taken to getting apps one at a time from MyBackup Root when I do switch. And yeah, I have had App conflicts cause forced bootloops before, it is not completely unheard of. I second the notion of installing one at a time, and Market DLing any that force loops. And as always, I reccomend a cache/dalvik/data whipe when switching full roms.

A few times, I've noticed that "travel wallpaper" is the app that has stopped. I've never tried to use that (whatever it is). I'm pretty sure "Google news stand" or something like that was the app sometimes, as well as other apps.
For a couple months, I've been rooted and use Titanium Backup to freeze some of the bloatware that I felt pretty sure I don't want (all from a list of "safe to remove" apps). I use Greenify on a few apps, but not the ones that are showing up in the error messages.
A week or so before I noticed these errors, I had installed a bad .apk. It seemed sketchy, so I quickly uninstalled it. I ran Clean Master and it found nothing bad. But I'm still thinking I might want to wipe my device. I'd kind of like to go through the process just to do it. I've been doing regular backups with Titanium and I can't think of anything on the phone that I can't restore from scratch.
Is there a best method for wiping and using Titanium Backup to restore?
Edit: "Wi-Fi Direct share" is another app that gets the error message.
Edit: I used Safestrap to backup immediately after I rooted. The phone was stable at that point and for a month after.

Before you wipe your phone may I suggest that you unfreeze everything first, then see if you get the "Unfortunately...." message. If you stop getting that message then it is a pretty good chance that you have something frozen that an app or system needs to use. Wiping your phone and getting a fresh install of apps is always a good idea...if you have the time and inclination to do those type things. Installing apps from a backup is handy, but if you have a bad download/app install you will only be replicating the problem by installing from a back up. This is usually not a problem, but you never know. If you wipe, and have the time, try downloading the apps you want from Play Store to make sure you have the latest/fresh app. Yeah it is a PITA but you can be assured that the apps on your phone are the latest versions.

I would like to restore my Nova Launcher home screen settings, Wanam settings, and any other customizations like that if possible.

Doing a Factory Reset is a good way to wipe your phone without touching your system apps. Or, if you have a custom recovery on your phone, you can do a full or partial wipe through recovery. I've used both methods and don't know if one way is any better than the other. You can save your current Nova setting to your SD card and restore after you have wiped. I don't use Wanam so I don't know about that app's settings and restore capability.
Immediately after I rooted, I made a backup with Safestrap. Titanium Backup has been backing up my apps and data.
Should I try to install the Safestrap recovery backup I made a couple months ago?
I did a lot of research before rooting, and so many people said how easy it was, etc. While using towelroot was super easy, learning how to correctly use Safestrap, etc. was not - especially since there were a couple error messages along the way and it didn't work quite how the info I gathered said it would (even the video from the Safestrap app page was not how most people set it up).
Regardless of what restore method you recommend, any info and helpful tips would be appreciated. I'm moving all my photos, videos, etc. to my computer, so there shouldn't be anything on the phone that I could not restore.

SafeStrap is the only recovery available for a retail S5. You have essentially two options: Do a factory reset which will not remove your firmware or ROM, it will only remove apps and associated cache and data. Many times that is all one needs to "clean-up their phone" and getting back to operating like new. Or, option 2, wipe data, cache, delvek cache, factory reset and flash your backup, if you trust it. If you don't trust your current backup make another one and flash that backup then restore your apps. I personally would do option 2. Make a new backup in Safestrap, then do a factory reset and flash the backup. That will accomplish what you want. You can always replace apps. The most important thing is to make sure you have a backup of your current ROM before you do anything.

Hmm, why is the ROM backup important? Because it's more difficult to get root back otherwise? I was more concerned about restoring my customizations for launcher, etc.

Maybe I misunderstand what it is you're trying to accomplish. Just a reminder-- RULE #1: if you're going to hack a phone (and you already have done that by rooting and installing SafeStrap) always, always have a backup.
Refresh for me what it is you're trying to accomplish. I haven't used SafeStrap in a couple of years, I have a Developer Edition. However, I'll try to help you accomplish what you want without bricking your phone, that is priority one. Even if you loose root, you can always use towelroot again to re-root. If you brick your phone, well, that is another story.

That's the kind of reason I posted this.
I made a Safestrap backup immediately after rooting. Everything was stable then (and for a month or so after).
Basically, I've tried a lot of apps, and one that seemed sketchy recently. My phone started throwing up the "___ has stopped" errors regularly, so something seems wrong. I want to go back to a stable state. I might even not freeze any apps with Titanium Backup for a while to see how it run. There are some apps that are currently on my phone that I won't bother reinstalling. Otherwise, I don't really want to change anything.

Ok, I understand...again, LOL. Yes, first unfreeze anything you have frozen and see if the error message goes away. If it does then you had something frozen that an app or system needed. The trick is going to be discovering what you had frozen that was causing the error. Uninstall (using the stock apps manager) any apps that you no longer use or want.
If the error has not returned, then freeze a few apps at a time and see if the error returns. If it does then you have narrowed the problem down to a few apps. Sorry, there is no better way to go through the "freezing" process. Sometimes it is just trial and error. By the way, what error(app) was stopping. That might help identify what you Don't want to freeze.
To avoid a Factory Reset, you can go into recovery and wipe cache and delvek cache. Do not select/wipe data, system or anything else. Then select reboot phone from within SafeStrap. When your phone re-boots Android will build (optimizing apps) delvek cache. This will not brick your phone, but it will clean it up and get rid of potential problems left over from uninstalled apps. And, you will not loose root.

There are a variety of apps that get the stop error - a lot of different apps. It's not consistent and seems to happen randomly (often apps I've never used). Because of that, I'm tempted to try to go back to a previous state. If you think it's sufficient to clear those caches and uninstall any apps I'm unsure of, then I might try it. However, I'd probably still worry that something bad was still installed somewhere. Maybe the only way to remove all doubt would be to factory reset. Or would my Safestrap backup be a certain way to put my phone back to its state before the sketchy app was installed?
I might try your method first to see how it goes.
If I wanted to use the Safestrap backup, I'm not sure exactly how. Do I open Safestrap and "install recovery"?

No problem, glad to help.
Ok, lets try the safest process first and progress from there.
1. Remove all unwanted and/or not used apps
2. Unfreeze everything and see if any errors occur
3. If no error then you have something frozen causing the problem. If the error still occurs then go to 4.
4. Enter recovery and clean cache and delvek...reboot phone and see what happens
5. If errors continue to occur then do a factory reset
6. If errors continue to occur after Factory Reset then wipe phone and flash your backup
How to flash backup: Go into recovery (SafeStrap), select Wipe and wipe (cache, delvek, data), and do a factory reset. Then, while still in recovery, go to Restore and select your backup and swipe to install the backup. After the install, select reboot.

I defrosted everything and still got errors.
I entered recovery, selected Wipe, then Advanced Wipe. That gives me options for "Dalvik Cache", "Cache", and a few others.
You said "delvek" where Safestrap Advanced Wipe says "Dalvik". I don't want to risk anything. Can you confirm that I should wipe Dalvik Cache and Cache?
