Hi All,
I have couple of basic question regarding rooting my xperia play. First of all i am not sure what i want is rooting only, so i will explain my problem, please let me know what i am trying to do is correct or not.
With the device, i got a dumb internal memory. I am a gaming freak, so downloaded most of the games and apps. So now i m running out of memory(Internal + SD card).
Today i purchased 16GB card over 8GB, which solved one problem.
Another problem is with the Internal memory. only 30MB is free currently.
1) Somewhere i read that if i root the device, i can force move all the applications to the SD card. so i decided to root. Is this the only solution?
2) I am following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043630
thread for rooting, can you please let know the OS image mentioned in there is the latest?
3) If there are multiple flavors of OS for xperia play, can you please let me know which the best OS to flash?
Thanks,
Harsha

@AndroHero:
Thanks for your help. It really helped me a lot. With the help of App 2 SD i moved all possible apps to SD. Now internal memory has 130MB free.
I have some more questions,
1) After i move any game to SD, i could still see its presence in internal memory but in few KB's. Is this the data of my progress in that game?
2) How to move already pre-installed games to SD? Also a game called "Crash......" i want to un-install.
3) Going forward, with installing new games and apps, i may run out of internal memory again, that's the time to root?
Thanks,
Harsha

1. Not too sure but I know it leaves a footprint in your internal memory.
2. Use Titanium Backup to remove them and then reinstall the apk to force them to the sd card. I did this with fifa, sims, etc.

You know that when ever a program refers to sd-card it means /SDCARD.
And this is the internal sdcard of the galaxy. The external sd-card is mounted at /sdcard/sd.
So friend how come i solve this problem..when i want to continue the installation it always says require at least 35mb memory card free but my memory card 4gig free..
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
This might be a form of copy protection where it doesn't want to allow apps to be installed off of an SD card. It sounds like you downloaded to an external card, am I right? Make sure you aren't confusing your internal and external SD (memory) cards, only use the internal memory card for downloads and installations.
actually it sounds like the [OP] already maxed out his INTERNAL SD, that's why the game is not installing.
Because Asphalt 5 installed fine for me just fine.
the games will not install to an EXTERNAL SD [OP] 4GB SD card because that feature only comes after fRoyo 2.2

You are referring to you externeal sd card!!
You can't use this card for installing apps. Only the internal sd card.
The internal sd card = sd card for any android app.

You can only install games on to your internal SD. If it fails to install due to not having enough memory you will have to delete some things for it to install. If you have a 4GB external SD you still cannot install apps to it as this is a feature of Froyo 2.2 only. If your not up for deleting anything you'll have to flash a froyo rom or wait until Samsung release the full official version.
easy, just click install
done
no special steps, it just installs automatically to the INTERNAL SD

So you have a stolen game ...
But you don't need to steal Asphalt 5 as it is available for free in the Samsung market.
Just select it there to install and everything works.
And of course you need some free space on your INTERNAL sdcard. Not the external 4GB you put in!!!

Are you running one of the leaked FroYo firmwares for Samsung Galaxy S? <-- Aha! Yes you are! I should have read your latest posts more carefully.
Nova (a Gameloft game) would not install under this firmware for me because the SD card handling in the leaked firmware was broken. The game requests phone-specific data for external storage (in-game media, I presume) during install, but fails when it cannot find the external SD card.
For the same reason, I could not mount the SD cards properly, a number of apps were unable to access data on the external card, and even custom recovery images failed to see the card so I was unable backup or restore anything via Nandroid.
The only fix for me was to re-install a stable 2.1 firmware.
EDIT: Just to clarify, Gameloft games require external SD storage and will ignore the internal storage completely, failing upon install if no external storage can be found. In the leaked 2.2 firmware (all versions that I found), external SD handling was broken, and the mounting points had been changed (so the external card could not be found where expected, at /sdcard/sd).
Formatting internal or external storage WILL NOT FIX THIS ISSUE!! It is a problem with the 2.2 firmware leaks that cannot be 'worked around'. I even tried sym-linking /sdcard/sd to the external card and got nowhere... but then, I'm not entirely sure I was doing it right anyway. :S
I think its leak because its only beta..many apps force close..the hp also running a bit slow..i bought this samsung from my friend and its allready upgrade to 2.2 beta..so how can i back to normal firmware..or is that i must reset the hp..how??

Sorry to post such a noob question on these boards.
I found this forum to be the most active in regards to the Xperia Play so thought I'd set up home here for a while.
I have the 16GB card that came with my PLAY, and even though when I install an app/game, I use the 'move to SD card', my internal storage is very low (getting a message). It's like 20mb or something left. I have gone through all the apps and moved everything that can to SD Card.
I am new to Android (from Ios), but thought this would be ok as everything could be installed on the SD Card, but my internal storage keeps going down anyway.
So this is going to greatly limit the number of games/apps I can install even though I have plenty of SD card space?
Cheers.

Google adb, learn its basic functions and how to use it, then from adb shell, use the command pm SetInstallLocation 2, this will force all apps and libs to be moveable to the sd card, i have 200+ apps n games on my play and still 70mb of internal storage

Careful about moving apps to the SD card. A lot of apps don't like it at all and will stop functioning completely. Apps that want to be on all the time, for example (Trillian, Tweetdeck, etc...) will just be killed every so often and you'll wonder why you never got that message on MSN or why you didn't get that DM from Twitter. Any app that has widgets will break the widgets completely when moved to the SD card.
It's one of those things I discovered that no one seems to talk about.

No, adb stands for android debug bridge, is basically a way for you to comunicate with your device remotely using a pc. Like another poster has mentioned, becareful what you move any app with a widget you want to use, or any app you wish to start on boot or sync need to stay on the internal storage

Hi! I have a Sony Xperia Play
Phone details:
Model - R800i
Android Version - 2.3.4
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.9-perf [email protected] #1
Build - 4.0.2.A.0.42
My internal storage is very low (getting a message). I have gone through all the apps and moved everything that can to SD Card.
I have heard about Titanium Backup root, DroidSail Super App2SD, adb, Link2SD and so on.
The methods above can let me move those unmovable apps to the SD card.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of them? How do they compare? Which method is safer or more reliable? Which method can move more apps?
If you know, please let me know, thanks.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I got this information from the official Link2SD website, this is comparing Native apps2SD to Link2SD, I don't know how Link2SD compared with Titanium Backup root, DroidSail Super App2SD, adb and so on. If you know, please let me know, thanks.
(Native apps2sd
Starting with Android 2.2 (Froyo) Google introduced native apps2SD.
This method moves
* apk file on Android 2.2
* apk + lib files on Android 2.3+
into a secure folder on your SD card in the main FAT partition.
It is the easiest method because it doesn't require you to partition your sdcard and root privilige.
It has some disadvantages though.
First disadvantage is that application files are just stored on the sdcard's main FAT partition.
When you enable USB mass storage to share files with your computer (or otherwise unmounts or removes the external storage), any application installed on the external storage and currently running is killed.
The system effectively becomes unaware of the application until mass storage is disabled and the external storage is remounted on the device.
Besides killing the application and making it unavailable to the user, this can break some types of applications in a more serious way.
So second disadvantage is that not all apps can be moved with native apps2sd method because of above reason.
In order for the application to consistently behave as expected, developer should not allow the application to be installed on the external storage if it uses any of the following features, due to the cited consequences when the external storage is unmounted:
Widgets, Services, Alarm Services, Live Wallpapers, Live Folders, Account Managers, Sync Adapters, Broadcast Receivers listening for "boot completed".
Force move (requires root);
You can force the apps move to SD card with native apps2SD even the application does not support moving as described above.
Link2SD and some other apps can force move apps if you have root priviliges. But, note that this can break some applications, as described above.
)
Requirements: You're play is rooted and ext2 partition is available on youre sd card.
1. Install Link2sd v2.0.2 from market.
The updated version allows you to convert system application to user apps. Thus, pre-install games can now be move to be user apps.
2. convert pre-install apps to be user apps, and create link to the application.
you will notice somehow an increase in the available internal memory.
I hope, I help somehow..

I never worry about space on mine. If you are rooted, you can use DroidSail Super App2SD. Its free and it works perfectly. I have transferred every single game to SD and they all work perfectly (every game that came on the phone, every game I have ever downloaded). I am consistently at about 250MB free.

Cool, i´ll try it. More internal memory!
I like it because if something did not work (I have not encountered a game or app that has not when moved) the option exists to move it BACK. It is very similar to an app I used to use on the Tapwave Zodiac back in the Palm days. One of the main reasons to have root on the Play is this app!

The Android framework is like system32 for windows. Basically, don't mess with it. You're not bricked. Use FlashTool to reflash the .ftf file for your phone version.

Thanks for letting me know. Will I loose all my info such as SMS, contacts, etc.? And where can I find info on how to reflash and get the correct .ftf for the phone?
Here is the FlashTool thread, and pretty much just search the Development subforum to find the thread that specifically deals with your phone model, whether it's x, i, at, or whatever else there is.
Flashing that .ftf will put you back to stock, so hope that you had your contacts backed up with your Google account. And SMS will be gone, as well as everything else that was personal.
Thanks a lot...it's unfortunate if I can't get my info back...

?? What ROM r u using ??
The easiest way is using application or script that move application to SD card. These things will move your application to your sd card and not wasting your internal memory. it's work perfectly fine.
There are many script available - chose one that match your ROM cause not all script are working perfectly to every ROM.
try search using A2SD and ....... (your ROM) to see which one work and which one donot...... Unfortunately i have to tell u that some script might working well with someone's phone (even u have the same ROM).
The second way is to install the app to SD program, like link2sd, app2sd... it's free on the market. Also this program is not working on everyone's phone. However it's easier to install.
after install script and application there might be a problem like low sound, lag, internet issue etc. so check that everything is Ok after u do anything.
I can't give u a step by step 'cause i dont know which ROM r u using.....

it's different for roms indeed. generally we have app2sd, app2sd+(aka app2ext), data2ext, d2sd, ad2sdx and so on.
the most basic and convenient 1 is link2sd from play store~
i think it's impossible to expand an internal storage. capacity is fixed. i read somewhere that some of space will be used for kernel and ROMs wil use another some of internal memory space to copy system files. so normally you will have internal memory available around 150-200MB depends on partition layout you make. the only way if you want to install many application is as mentioned above to move your application to SDcard, and i think link2sd app is the easiest way to do that

You don't have a problem with the internal memory. You're simply encountering a normal occurrence, as not every app supports moving its data to the MicroSD card. Since your list of apps doesn't support being moved to the MicroSD the only way to clear storage is to uninstall the apps. You may of course try apps to SD card options, but I'm not sure how well they will work on Android 5.x.

at the first place i want to restore my space back
yeah , my phone is rooted and am using omega v28 5.0.1 rom
with custom recovery , TWRP 2.8.7.0 touch recovery
I just wanted to make sure you weren't using Clockworkmod or Philz, as those are notorious for eating internal storage. If you want to restore the lost space, you have to uninstall the apps. It's either that or you learn to live with it until Android 6.0 custom ROMs are made available for your device. Android 6.0 allows you to merge internal and external storage so that Android sees the two as a single volume, and that definitely would eliminate your problem.
Oh dear oh dear
ok thanks bro any way , i will try to live with it
Until it happen
Is there anyway to make Google play download / update to the sd card not the internal ??
