I just got off the phone with a tier 2 support person,(Yeah, I know) to get my ESN swapped for the 3G issue, and she said we are getting a couple of updates starting Wed. One of them is a Mobile Hotspot update. All she would say about the second one was it was a minor software update.
Locking down Mobile Hotspot and tethering? Any one else heard any thing?
Not saying it is going to happen, just passing on what I was told, and guessing at why.

I know the Charge is getting an update soon for Mobile Hotspot and other bug fixes, haven't heard anything about the Fascinate getting an update.
I'm getting an OTA update right now. Don't know the details, only that I'll probably have to re-root again. Bah!
The Droid X gingerbread leak had a bunch of locks in it for tethering and the hotspots. If you even open like any wireless tether app it would block off 3g until a reboot and redirect you to a Verizon page telling you to pay for tethering if you tried to actually use it.
tl;dr tread carefully, any tethering related updates could be bad.

What happened to the hotspot free for a month that was discussed all over the internet prior to launch?
Im not sure what happened with that but if you don't mind rooting the phone the wireless tether.apk works for the Evo
I used Toast's root and it doesn't work with it...
there is an update
but it would be nice if sprints was hacked since it acts like a true router so my zune can see it but wifi tether is ad hoc
I ran the unrevoked root over the Toast root and now the wireless tethering works great! Using it to send this from my laptop!
I have the hotspot for free right now. is that cause I did the update? Ive pinky tried connecting it took one device so far. It works pretty damn well if I don't say so myself. So theyre offering it free for a month?
i think the free hotspot for a month thing only works if you are in a 4g market.....
My Sprint Hotspot is working and has been since launch day, and I didn't get the tethering.
I'ma lucky one I guess
I think it is free until July
Tethering
I talked to a Sprint rep today, some people got signed up for the $29 hotpot plan automatically, those who are using the hotspot app might want to check their sprint phone bill to validate.

I'm pretty sure the "free month" was just a bug and that it was going to be a month until they fixed it. Also I'm pretty sure it was just 4G tethering, not 3G.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/28/evo-4g-on-sale-at-8am-on-june-4th-with-one-month-free-4g-mobile/
EDIT:
Interesting note... The words from Sprint at the bottom don't seen to condemn other tethering options. They just say that the $29/mo option comes with more reliability and the ability to tether up to 8 devices. Which is a valid point.
I wonder who the intended audience was. Probably more for sales people to sell the tethering option to folks than admitting that other options exist.
i do know that there was a few people back a couple weeks ago that got a G2 update that included tethering and the WiFi calling. but when is there actually going to be one? maybe to fix some of the random bugs, such as adding a notification light and such. any ideas?

My guess is that it will most likely be november 3rd. I say that because if tmobile is going to charge $15 extra for native tethering, they are going to need to give phones that didn't have that feature out of the box ie. G2 I'm not saying that people will pay for it, but since the g2 technically doesn't have wifi tethering as a froyo 2.2 feature, they will probably send out the update to have that feature installed when they charge for tethering on november 3rd. But jes my opinion

Tmobile is being greedy with their shiny new hspa

Well, so far my impression of their HSPA is that it is garbage. Maybe it is the G2, maybe it is their network, maybe the combination of both. The phone is a dream on WiFi, but an 80% of the time a stuttering joke on their network. Not gonna pay them one cent more to hang my PC onto that crap.

The G2 needs a radio update desperately. My myTouch 3G Slide was pretty bad before it got a radio update and then after that the phone was perfect. I was getting 6 Mb/s constantly in HSPA+ areas.
Their network is great, the phone just needs some help.

I couldn't agree with you more. The radio is crap and this is exactly how the slide was. The ota will fix it and hopefully those other features without patching the current root exploit.

Even my G1 was like that. When I first rooted it, I was having lots of data connection issues until I updated to a newer radio image. Huge difference. So whenever the G2 gets a radio update, hopefully it will clear up the signal problems.
What kind of signal problems are you having? Mine works quite well. If you need data it takes about a second to a second and half to link up then chugs along.

maybe, b/c i constantly pull 6Mb/s with my vibrant, while the G2 left me embarrassed competing against an EVO and a DroidX
my vibrant beat those phones btw
Will the update disable current apps like wireless tether, pdanet, easytether, barnacle and etc?
Sure hope not.
my phone is perfectly fine
What pisses me off is htc.com advertises this phone to have wifi tethering amongst other features that tmo decided not give us. WHY? Don't answer that. I know why.

So, I heard that T-mobile will start charging for WiFi tethering after the OTA, but I have yet to see anything on my phone or account (online) that indicates that they are.
Anyone hear any update on this?
Sprint did the same thing with the Evo. They tease you with it for a while until they get their tethering plan up and running. You get used to it then they take it away unless you pay.
Well I don't know if it's on purpose (probably is) but they will start charging for it soon. But don't worry. It won't come out of nowhere. When they do start charging, it won't happen until you add the tethering plan.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Hmm. Well, if/when that happens, I guess I'll need to go back to Wireless Tether.
WiFi Hotspot has been very nice, though...
How will they take it away? we now have the app installed. You think the official app will verify with their server before turning on?
Questions, wouldn't hotspot and wireless tether be about the same???

Not like this is a surprise.
Seriously! ATT rolling out another update while nothing from Bell.
Just like the ATT customers, we should be pressuring Bell to enable HSUPA at a minimum.

I don't think anyone in an actual store is gonna know much. Maybe a projected time frame to tell customers but other then that they aren't going to know much.

They are going to release an update. Just right this moment. It comes threw Motorola, NOT Bell.
Motorola's Priority is on a bigger phone company right at this moment. and that is Att.

Same here, I lost my nandroid backup with an accidental wipe of my sd card. Im stuck on Telstra for a bit also.
A software update is now available for the Bell version of the Motorola Atrix!
- To download the update manually:
Go to: Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software Update
- I'm not sure what the size of the update file is, but I would suggest downloading it over WiFi as opposed to the Bell network so you don't exceed your data allowance and incur extra charges.
- Ensure that your phone is at least 50% charged before attempting the update. Idealy, charge it beyond 50% to be safe.
-- The updated version is v37.23 and brings Android Froyo up to version 2.2.2, and contains numerous updates:
Upload Data Speed
Increased upload speed at which data can travel on the network.
Data and Voice Connection
Improvements to prevent interruptions to data and voice connection.
Screen
Improvements to prevent screen from freezing.
Skype
Improvements to call audio function so it is easier for the person you called to hear you. Please note this application is not pre-loaded on phone, but is available for download from Android Market.
Wi-Fi
Increased functionality by enabling Yahoo Email to be sent over a Wi-Fi connection.
Display
Improved International Roaming Warning Message by simplifying user notification so that it only appears on the screen when you move to a new network.
Happening Widget
Improved Happenings Widget to ensure that you receive the latest updates across the social networks you are connected to such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter.
Calling
Improvements were made to incoming and outgoing call functionality to ensure a more seamless experience
Expanded Language Support for Webtop

Hi,
Does anyone know if T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 work with wifi calling feature?
SGS2 Hercules is too new, it's not even on sale yet for another week
i doubt people can answer you until next next week
I am going to assume yes, because all of the new t-mobile phones have it, BUT it doesn't mention it in the features on the t-mobile site.
Moved
I just got my SGS2 for Tmobile today. I'm coming from a mytouch 4g and use the wifi calling app every now and then.
at the moment, I do not see any icon for wifi calling on the SGS2. one came by default on the mytouch 4g. but not on this.
I was assured in the store that this feature was supported. but i'm not sure how if I don't have the tmobile app installed on the phone and can't find it on the market.
No wifi calling support and wifi hotspot NOT FREE!!!
Just got the SGS2 Wednesday...
There is no Wifi calling app and no support for it currently. I even tried installing the kineto apk from my G2X and it would install no problem, but then immediately FCs every time. Some t-mo forums I read support.t-mobile.com /message/42893#42893 state that there will be an app in a future update to enable this. But, it says the phone will IMS-based (as opposed to UMA or GAN). From what I understand, the Wifi calling app is free and does not deduct your plan minutes if you call to enable this feature and have the rep set it up this way. AND, if your phone supports calling over UMA! So, this really sucks! I get spotty reception in my house and chose a lower rate plan all with the expectation that this end-all be-all phone would obviously support this.
Also, don't be fooled by the Wifi Hotspot app the phone comes with. It would appear to work correctly without a hitch, but then nothing connects through it. I finally realized that when connected every page you attempt to visit on the tethered computer points to offers.t-mobile.com /tethering/upsell.do
Are you freaking kidding??? Again, aren't we buying this amazing phone and paying a premium for it because it can do anything???
Anybody else find this? Any official word from t-mo that this was all just a big mistake?
PS-Sorry, I had to split the urls above into two parts, I didn't realize you couldn't post outside urls for the first eight messages.

I am with you. I use the wifi calling feature on a regular basis and I pissed that it doesnt have it. Its my fault I moved from the sensation to this and figured it would have it. I will wait for the update that hopefully comes soon.
Return the phone and cite the lack of WiFi calling/texting as the reason. If you just keep it and wait, they may assume you guys are all happy with what you got and never put it in the update... Pick your poison.
