[Q] G2 OTA update. - G2 and Desire Z General

i do know that there was a few people back a couple weeks ago that got a G2 update that included tethering and the WiFi calling. but when is there actually going to be one? maybe to fix some of the random bugs, such as adding a notification light and such. any ideas?

My guess is that it will most likely be november 3rd. I say that because if tmobile is going to charge $15 extra for native tethering, they are going to need to give phones that didn't have that feature out of the box ie. G2 I'm not saying that people will pay for it, but since the g2 technically doesn't have wifi tethering as a froyo 2.2 feature, they will probably send out the update to have that feature installed when they charge for tethering on november 3rd. But jes my opinion

Well, so far my impression of their HSPA is that it is garbage. Maybe it is the G2, maybe it is their network, maybe the combination of both. The phone is a dream on WiFi, but an 80% of the time a stuttering joke on their network. Not gonna pay them one cent more to hang my PC onto that crap.

The G2 needs a radio update desperately. My myTouch 3G Slide was pretty bad before it got a radio update and then after that the phone was perfect. I was getting 6 Mb/s constantly in HSPA+ areas.
Their network is great, the phone just needs some help.

I couldn't agree with you more. The radio is crap and this is exactly how the slide was. The ota will fix it and hopefully those other features without patching the current root exploit.

Even my G1 was like that. When I first rooted it, I was having lots of data connection issues until I updated to a newer radio image. Huge difference. So whenever the G2 gets a radio update, hopefully it will clear up the signal problems.

What kind of signal problems are you having? Mine works quite well. If you need data it takes about a second to a second and half to link up then chugs along.

maybe, b/c i constantly pull 6Mb/s with my vibrant, while the G2 left me embarrassed competing against an EVO and a DroidX
my vibrant beat those phones btw

Will the update disable current apps like wireless tether, pdanet, easytether, barnacle and etc?
Sure hope not.

my phone is perfectly fine

What pisses me off is htc.com advertises this phone to have wifi tethering amongst other features that tmo decided not give us. WHY? Don't answer that. I know why.

weak 3g reception?

especially from a g1 user's perspective, for me it seems the slide has noticably worse 3g reception; anyone else notice the same?
Yes it does, I'm sure t-mobile will send out radio firmware updates as they did for the g1. I know the last one gave me a big boost. For now you can choose for it to use 3g only and you'll see a lot less dropping to edge, I have mine set like this and sometimes have very low signal but haven't found a spot yet where it was completely dead.
Hmm, that's weird. I used to have the G1 and as soon as I clapped my hand due to my phone getting atleast 1bar of 3G signal it would drop to E. Which meant me not clapping anymore. But with this phone I am clapping once again.

as I understood the g1 radio update mainly made the phone hold onto a weaker 3g signal longer rather than any substantial improvement in overall reception; where I work I get no signal at all if I lock 3g only whereas with my g1 I had nearly 100% 3g uptime, the g1 might not have been state of the art but it's cell radio sure was pretty impressive compared to every other phone I've owned
i get better reception than what i did with my mytouch 3g and way better uplaod and download speeds to

I second this, my G1 gets crappy 3G reception even on the most recent radio. I'm picking up my MT3GS tomorrow.
My G1 was next to my old Razr in having near perfect signal. My slide drops out of 3G quite often, even at my house sitting right next to my wife with my old G1 that is still on 3G.
I've noticed this. It seems to have horrible horrible 3g reception. I was in a tiny guard shack, maybe 10'x10', walls were thin, and most of the side walls were made of glass patio doors. Inside the shack I would get E all the time, I could literally step 6" outside of the shack, right on the curb, and I'd get 4 bars of 3G.
in my building i get 3g in the elevator, must be practically living right under a tower!!
my AT&T phones used to drop the signal as soon as the elevator doors closed.
Upstate NY here and I'm getting the in/out 3G with Tmo, wish they would get their 3G working right before even trying to consider releasing 4G (as I was told by a rep)
My phone can drop in and out of 3G and 2G. If u put the phone on wcdma only it doesn't happen. Mine will hold 3G all day long without a problem and it downstairs burn as much battery either.

Sorry double post
a few question:
Does anyone know when the radio update will be available?
How does one go about getting the radio update?
Will the radio update work on a rooted phone?
Thanks.
Really??
Are you kidding me??!! I am so surprised (and disappointed) to read this.
First, the Nexus One, then the HD2 (which I owned), and now the MyTouch Slide?? I think I even heard that the Incredible having these issues.
What is it with HTC phones losing reception?
It's one of the reasons (but not the only one) I returned the HD2. I've been strongly considering the MyTouch Slide, but after hearing this, I have to scratch it off the list until/if/when they fix it.
For those who already own this phone, I sincerely hope they fix it for you.
I've noticed weaker 3G speeds also while at work. I've just activated wcdma only it's a lot better now, but I'm at home right now, so I'll post an update tomorrow to see of it is better at work

I've noticed it really sucks. I'm sitting in my kitchen right now, where I always had a strong 3G signal on my G1, yet now I don't have one. If Tmobile doesn't fix this soon, I'm considering canceling my contract and going elsewhere.
Ive been having issues for the past 2 months or so (dating back to the G1 btw) where Id be on 3G with full service surfing the internet then everything would stop loading, Id drop down to GPRS and it would stay like that for a few minutes. Then 3G would pick back up again.
Ive been having that issue ever since they started rolling out HSPA+. The TMO reps keep saying that it shouldnt happen, but it is. And not just on my phone. My brothers G1 and now his slide did the same thing and my friends MT3G did it as well.
And this issue isnt in a localized area. Its happening all over VA. Im a roving technician and I get this issue wherever 3G is. If the area only offers Edge, I dont have any issues. When the 3G holds though, its decently quick (check signature).

Tmobile isn't releasing 4g, is expanding its HSPA+ network, which is technically faster than 4g. Be careful when you ask the reps anything. I have had reps tell me things that I know for a fact weren't true but majority of them don't know any better.

Take what you read here with a grain if salt. Yes some people experience some 3g coverage issues but that doesn't affect everyone and there are a lot of factors to consider. Nonetheless, if you scratch this phone off your list, you'd be missing out on a great device.

forgot about this thread... turns out due to some strange coincidence at the time I first bought my slide the cell tower where I worked went on the fritz and the tech people weren't updated on it yet. I have 3g again at work but still notice that I drop to edge a bit more often than with my old g1... and the data works absolutely horridly on edge with latency issues and timeouts that the g1 never did. oh well, still a solid device although I have my upgrade credit saved for whatever emerald/vision/vanguard madness TMO has planned for this fall

3G data speeds dramatically declined

When I first got the Evo, I was getting about 900kb/sec-1.1mb/sec in my house, and ever since I've flashed these custom ROM's and new radio... The best I can get is about 300-500kb/sec... I've also noticed that my signal seems to fluctuate every couple seconds, from no signal to a full signal, which never used to happen either. I know I'm not going crazy, I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this... It's really discouraging
thread moved to general discussion forum.
i also noticee this too and ur are ABSOLUTELY right i was clockin like 1.1mb-1.5 before and im rooted using the fresh room and im at 600kb
gonna return mine, get a new one, and stick to stock... i think it broke my radio internally.
I notice slower speeds as well from my first day or so 4th and 5th. I might feel the same way you do if I didnt have my girlfriend and best friend who both got evo around the same time and are being completely stock. They both have similar speeds to me. I actually went into a Sprint store to complain and sure snuff my speeds jumped up to 700kbps downstream for the first time in almost a week right before I went in.
I am NOT happy with my 3g speeds and am borderline on canceling my contract. If it wasn't for this awesome phone and this awesome dev community I would tell Sprint to kiss my whole @$$h0le. Premium data my ass.

I noticed better speeds after the ROM and Radio update. Speeds are highly variable and depend on a lot of factors. I doubt you damaged it by flashing, flash memory is designed to be flashed.

Just run the RUU, it will restore the original radio and everything else you think you lost. Link is here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685835
I have a feeling this has more to do with your local network congestion, but feel free to prove otherwise.
I've flashed the original RUU and it didn't fix it... why would my speed halve with no changed variables? It just doesn't make sense.
It's not possible that I damaged my radio by flashing the upgraded radio? And now that's why it's acting erratic and my speeds are so bad?

I just got 490 down 380 up, but my results vary wildly... again depending on network conditions and where you are connected and how many users are also connected, etc. Get a few people on the same tower that are into bittorrent and your results can be drastically different.

949/1013
388/770
357/721
662/139
561/577

Even if it is possible, your new phone will come pre-broken most likely. That radio is the official Sprint radio and if the phone has the OTA update you will have it.

Just because you do not know what the variables are, does not mean there are no variables.
Possible variables you are not considering.
There are 20 other people around you with new EVOs testing their speeds, tethering, and downloading like its going out of style.
Time of the day. There are peak usage times. Maybe your first test was on a low usage time.
The site you use to test your speed has become more congested recently.
There is more CDMA users around you recently. With CDMA towers, the more users per tower, the lower its radius/signal will get.
Maybe you had WiFi on the first time?
I am sure I could make up 15 more variables if I wanted to.
To ease your concerns, think of ROMs as software, and your phone as the hardware. It is very unlikely that you did damage to the hardware. Especially considering most of these ROMs are exactly like Stock minus a few Sprint apps.

Sorry to break it to you but these are typical sprint speeds. Sprint is one of the slowest cell carriers I have ever used.
I'm not an idiot alright... I didn't have Wifi on... I know somethings screwed up with my phone, it's not in my head.
There are possibly some variables as to why my speed isn't the same as it was a week ago, but there really is no explanation that for my erratic signal.
Oh well, hopefully I can figure it out.
obviously this has nothing to do with wifi, but doesnt the EVO have 4G and cdma radio's????

I am close to returning my EVO. I thought that maybe one of my flashes has done something to my 3g speeds, but I ran that RUU and no luck . I am going to be going to Sprint store on Wednesday to compare.
I am in Aurora CO, I am coming from Nexus one on T-Mobile. I LOVE Evo, but hate the way sprint is. I use my phone at the gym to listen to Pandora/Slacker, can't even do it on Evo since I get such crappy 3g speeds.. Downtown Denver phone works fine, but not here... Anyways, on T-Mobile I got about 1.6mb down, and 300up most of the time.
Today, I went down to T-Mobile store and ran SpeedTest on MT3G and Evo. At the store, MT3G got 3mbps down!!!, Evo howered around 600kbps. Anyways, point is, I really am not too happy with Sprint in my area. I am sure that in other places it is fine, but it doesn't seem to be the case here. I have tried everything, even downgraded my radio, no change in results.

i felt the same way, just noticed tonight. but now that i've run a bunch more speed tests, it all averages out. no doubt all these evo's are taxing sprints network to the extreme. :/ hopefully that $10 surcharge will quickly pay for upgrades.

Sprint Mobile HotSpot Free After Update!

So im checking out the 2.2 on the evo i just updated at work and decided to turn on the hotspot. By some miracle it works!!! I just connected 2 blackberrys and a Ipad to the phone. I just actived the hotspot on my rooted 2.2 and it works as well. I know for a fact that niether phone has it on the plan
Try it with 4g and let us know if it works please.
I got the update last night and tried the 4G hotspot. It does not work on Stock now.
Gives the same PCS login error 3G did before 2.2.

Im on the phone with Sprints NSS to see if its to good to be true.
My regional said to enjoy it while you can
i recall an article or press release that said that Sprint would prorate this. I will see what i can dig up for you guys
Ok so I'm pretty sure hotspot over 3g is free, they are only charging for hotspot over 4g. All this has been said in a few threads I have read, Just checked mine and 3g works but 4g doesn't. One of the threads that mentions this was Ava's 2.2 thread, I'm guessin he is correct, but don't quote me!!! Maybe try it a little and see if they do charge you first.
That would be very odd. They haven't been charging for hotspot over 4G because they couldn't prevent it, until now.
With 2.2 they added the ability to verify if you are signed up for the service on 4G.
Before the update today I could not use 3G hotspot but I could use it on 4G.
Now I cannot use it on either network without receiving the same login error.
Wait, so far in this thread it sounds like:
3G wi-fi is free
4G is not, either you cannot log in or they will charge/prorate it for you.
Has anyone else been able to verify anything? If anyone talks to a Sprint rep (I'm at work, or else I'd be on the phone asking) post their name so we can say they are the ones who told us this was true... so hopefully they'll tell us the truth or else look like a ****.
"____, why did we get 42090589 calls saying YOU said mobile hotspot was free over 3G/4G???"
Well remember guys, the leaked documents did say they were enabling 4g mac id verification, which would prevent 4g hotspot use without the proper credentials (the $30 hotspot charge unlocks that).
Think about it; the big data hog is going to be through 4g, as the higher the bandwith, the more your probably going to download. On the other hand, 3g's data usage is probably far less than that of 4g because of it's download limits. Of course there's going to be even more usage when your tethered to another device, but it's not like it's going to be gigabytes of data per hour as you wouldn't even have the ability to do so on 3g as you would with 4g.
It would make sense for Sprint to charge those who use more data (alike tiers) and allow those that don't with the ability to at least share their connection with another device. It's a win-win situation; Sprint gets to make their customers happy by allowing 3g tethering while still being able to charge its most active users, and we the customers get 3g tethering (not really important to me since I've had tethering since I rooted ages ago lol).

Makes sense to me, I was thinking that more people would be interested in tethering to 4G because of the speed is comparable (if not better) than DSL connections and slow (more like cheap) cable connections.
If this is the case, that's awesome, because the only reason I'd tether is to see a website that my phone had a hard time rendering (which should be nothing now) and to download something for the computer. And my city doesn't have 4G. But if I was in a 4G market, I'd still be happy with free 3G tethering.
I don't think you'll find too many people complaining, except those with non-Android devices. But that's their fault for not moving over to Android!
2 reps weren't sure, neither was their supervisor, we need a confirmation from a higher up.

Good thing about 3g is that at least for me, I get pretty respectable speeds; usually about 2mb/s down and .5 up. With that I can still stream videos and download things faster than a snails pace.

[Q] Is the 3G model going to be worth it in the USA?

Anyone have any ideas if the 3G will be worth it, there are some discouraging posts over at the notion ink blog, in the comments section, about the bandwidth limitations on the 3G models and them being selected for you, instead of allowing us to pick our own.
(I am one of the ones that did not get a pre-order in on time)
It would be considered a new contract on AT&T so you would not have unlimited data. Also in the US it is only for AT&T
Why thank you for that, being a sprint person, and an Android lover, AT&T is certainly not something I want to deal with, at least that helps me with my decision, I'll just have to use a USB Sprint 4G adapter... :

If you have an android phone I would recommend root it and install wifi tether. Rooting is a very simple process for the EVO at unrevoked.com and I am not sure if it will have support for a usb adapter. You might get the MiFi that is coming to Sprint soon.
Interesting topic. Since I am also on Sprint, its probably better off just getting the Wifi version and wifi tether to the EVO or pdanet. Now when Traveling overseas where Sprint doesn't work (except Jamaica and Taiwan) I guess the wifi will have to just do.

Can you tether an Android device to an Android device? I have purchased EasyTether, I use it for work when I have to drive between states, but did not know they made an Android app to tether to, I thought it only worked on PC's. I'll have to go to their website and look into it.
On Android if you root it you can install a WiFi Tether application that allows you to turn your phone into a hot spot without having to pay Sprint.

I have it on my Desire (yes it's rooted, but I think the hotspot functionality was part of the original ROM).

It is a standard feature but the service providers locked it down so you would have to pay them to use it. The nexus one and s are the only ones that have it enabled.
You can pick your carrier with the adam
Rohan's interview on Android Police states:
AP: Regarding the 3G model, how many frequency sets are being offered? In the US, AT&T and T-Mobile run on different 3G bands, necessitating at least two US 3G models.
Rohan: Initially we offered only one 3G module which was suited for AT&T, but then when customers requested we changed their models. From next pre-order everyone will be given an option of deciding their own 3G module for a specific frequency.
So, if you have already pre-ordered but want a different carrier...email them and provide your order info with your carrier preference. If you pre-order now you will have an option to indicate your choice
Data limitations will be determined by cell carrier not this device. And yes, every company but Sprint has a limit on data right now. Come to think of it, Sprint might have a limit for their USB hotspot and for the devices that have an EVDO radio in them, not sure on that.
Regardless as others stated, if this bothers you just wifi tether. But I have a Chrome Netbook with a verizon connection in it and I love it. Not having to deal with wifi tether all the time is nice.

I know i'm jealous as well.
I just ordered my Adam and the only model left was the Pixel Qi 3G version. If I had a choice, I would have gone wifi only because I don't have AT&T as a carrier (I have Verizon). Was it just me that found a lack of info on the website about the 3G carrier requirements? It wouldn't have changed my order (because I ordered to late), but it seemed a little vague. I'm still stoked to get the adam though.
Cheers!

3G a bit slow lately?

Anybody notice 3G to be a bit slow lately? I used speed test awhile back and got 1.5mbps, now I get half that! Not cool.

Fluctuation in speed will happen. Try it again in a hour and see what you get. Did you run the speed tests in the same location.
I've been seeing more and more of these threads popup. Something is up.

Maybe this..

My 3G speeds were bad all of Dec. now they're good.
Didn't mean to add another thread. Was going I wasn't alone on this. I've gone through 3 different roms and a slew of kernels thinking it was them. Bummer.

Wow! That's actually what I was seeing earlier. Don't know what's going on cause soon as I made my post that I was getting 1.2mbps, it dropped to nearly nothing. Smh..

Same thing is happening to me.
Like I said something is up. Sprint data used to be the best in NYC. Man, I also wish that they upgraded to Rev. B for the next flagship phone. I know, wishful thinking but Id prefer that over WiMax for everyday use

Check your mobile internet settings. I just flashed cm7 and it has a couple of new selections...like international roaming, which was preselected. Also, it was preselected to roam on national affiliate networks. Since a lot of these roms are from people "across the pond" as they say, it will default to their servers. So, de-select those options and it will find a server closer to where you live. It is pretty kewl as it does switch to another network, but it is only 1rt speed, not 3G, so it didn't make my connection any faster. There are several threads out there on this about slow 3G speeds. I can only hope that with the 4G coming online, maybe the spectrum will open up to allow faster 3G speeds.
Lol glad im not the only 1 seeing this.. I was testing my connection in Germany yesterday LOL...
Tho even swapped back to the closest server (Germantown WI) , my speed still sucked..So I called sprint when I got home and told him my results compared to an ATT and Verizon phones while they were right next to me, and they were 6-7x faster then mine.
The CSR told me that its possible with northern Ill. getting 4G its working its way north into Wisconsin, and that could be affecting towers here while they transition..
Frankly I dont buy it. 2-3 weeks ago it was great, since then, 360kb is common. Also in the phone call I told him that I have no issues paying the $10 premium data charge, but if my phone keeps chugging along as it is now, I will be calling back since there is no way in hell I can take advantage of this "premium data" when I cant even watch a video on YouTube without constant pauses and other downloads basically crawling along.

I chatted with a rep last night and they gave me the whole "there are no issues" song and dance. Clearly with so many people noticing this in so many different areas there is SOMETHING wrong with Sprints network. Either that or theyre throttling their speeds thinking people wont notice.
The csr i spoke to said he was going to push something thru to my phone and I should reboot it..which I did..
I see somewhat of an improvement at home (I THINK theres a relay on the watertower near my house but im not sure) and its now about 1.4mb down...Tho most of my issues are when im away from home and not near WiFi lol
I really hope Sprint isnt pulling a ninja throttle job on us to ease up the network for all the new subs
