HD2 - Resetting to stock software.. For warranty! - HD2 General

Ok, I know there have been a few threads on this. I've read all of them but still slightly confused.
I have an HD2 (der) with a custom rom, HSPL, Magldr 1.13..
Basically, what in the world do I need to do to get it back to "stock". I installed a rom from the t-mo website for this phone. It loaded windows, yadda yadda. But I know it still had HSPL on it.
Also, do I need to flash to a certain radio?
So far it has HSPL, a new radio, and Magldr 1.13.
Im sorry if this is a redundant question.. I just want to make sure I get this right! This phone was doomed even when it had Windows 6.5 on it. I rather not have them tell me I was the one who ruined it because of Android.. Even though it was acting up before it.
Thanks guys..

If you have the HDSPL yet, you have to uninstall it by running HDSPL3 and selecting *.spl or *.0000
Did I answer to the question ?

because usb flashing doesnt change the spl (hspl), only the splash, rom and radio.
Either - flash it again from the sd card, or use hspl3/4 to reset the spl manually, , if you flashed 3.14 rom, choose spl 3.03.0000, else chooe 2.08.0000

Ok, I'll download HSPL3 and flash it to spl 2.08.0000. This will look like it's stock to the technician, correct?
Also, I found this link (I apologize if I'm not suppose to post links like this, let me know and I'll remove it ASAP!)

Yes. Correct. It is stock SPL. But, if you only flash it via HSPL, it will not flash the ROM itself. Your current ROM will remain. If you want to go back to original stock rom, you need to flash it again.
Cheers

Ok, here's what I did..
I downloaded the stock rom for my phone (using my IMEI number on the tmo website). I went into HSPL mode (the tri color screen) and then ran the .exe on the computer and it flashed it.
Currently, it's still running HSPL. If I flash HSPL to SPL 2.08.0000... This will look completely stock, correct?
Thanks for your help! I get to send this in today!
Also, the radio is 2.15.50. Is that stock... ?

Yes that's right but it will be easy if you flash through sd card method it will write stock SPL ( you wouldnt do anything wrong if you install through hspl )... do do that just extract ruu you downloaded ( use 7-zip just search google its free) find ruu_signed.nbh and rename to LEOIMG.nbh copy to sd card and put in phone ... go into bootloader and follow instruction on screen.. and you are done.
But you alrady installed stock rom so to save time just put your phone into bootloader - tricolor screen connect to pc and run hspl and install stock spl
follow this link and download

Thank you VERY much! I guess I'm just paranoid my $200 phone I got from craigslist will be deemed "rooted" and sent back to me with a nice "eff u" on the package from HTC.
The radio is now stock, everything is back to stock. SPL (no H) 2.08.0000. Yadda yadda.. It's still being a PITA.. so yes, I guess it is a hardware issue... yay for warranties!

How can I reset my phone back to stock & update it.

I tried a few cooked roms and I like some things about them and others I dont, so I was going to flash my phone back to stock and if there are any upgrades/updates I would like to do so also.... Please advise me, should I do this why or why not... and How can I go about doing this ? (Would I just use hspl2 1024 and reinstall 2.08 first, then install the latest stock rom ? -but where can I find the latest official stock rom?-can I get it from htc? )....
thanks in adavance...
If you have already run hspl2 there is no need to do it again. All you need to do is download the shipped rom (available here and at ppcgeeks.com) and flash it. There haven't been any updates for the stock rom as of yet. Your personal choice on if you want custom rom or stock. Custom roms usually have less bloatware and performance enhancements that make them ideal over the stock rom.

looking for help
I installed hspl 2.08.0000 and flashed a custom rom, then I tried to flashed a vodafone Uk shipped Rom and now my Hd2 won't even boot up, when I connect it to the usb windows xp sees the device and tries to install a driver but then fails to find a driver. I cant even use mtty because usb is not listed as one of the selections. does anyone know how to help Please
Could be because you flashed a shipped rom that is for a different device. The european HD2 is different than the US HD2. If you have a US HD2 flash a rom that is designed for 1024 Leo (recommend Miri and Steve's Eleganicia). Put the phone in bootloader and then flash from pc or you can rename the .nbh from a rom to LEOIMG.nbh and place that in the root of your storage card to flash. Can get to bootloader by holding volume down and pressing the reset button under the back cover, holding vol key til tri-colored screen appears.
it wont let me get into bootloader mode, my computer does see the hd2 but wont let me access the usb
Maybe someone else can chime to correct me if im wrong but sounds like you now have one expensive paper weight. Flashing a rom that is not for your phone is not good.
Flashing a Euro Rom on your TmoUS HD2 will brick your phone - for good. Why are so many people doing this?
tmo are sure to get wise to this and stop replacing them at this rate. I've seen 6 or 7 people with the same problem in two days.
Guys with a tmous,
1 - DONT flash any stock roms except the one from tmous. Stock roms include a radio and it will kill your phone.
2 - DONT flash any radio with a .51. in the version. It will kill your phone.
3 - dont flash any cooked rom not based on the 2.10 rom. It will kill your phone. (i think, , , possibly recoverable, not sure yet)
4 - most of all read first, flash later.
OK PLEASE do not hijack the topic,
Remember I asked how can I reset my phone back to completely stock (like when I first bought it).... and then after that I would like to update it (if there are any updates)....
Thanks for all the advice so far...

2 ways.
1 - connect phone via USB, run hspl1024, choose spl 2.08.0000, thats your spl back to stock. Then flash the tmous 2.1 rom over usb, thats your radio and rom returned to stock.
2 - you can get the tmous 2.1 rom, extract the file ruu_signed.nbh, copy it to sd card, rename it leoimg.nbh and reset your phone, which will see the nbh file and flash it, and because it is from sd card it will also reset the spl (and radio) to stock.
i'd go for option 1, as i haven't read much about people flashing sd card on the tmous, so for now steer clear.

it's the spl that voids the warranty, not the rom. when you boot to bootloader, so long as it says
spl 2.08.0000
then you are good to go.

how to remove hpsl?

I read on another thread how to uninstall HPSL from your HD2 is the process for the non t-mobile branded phone the same as the one for T-mobile. The reason I ask this is my phone has some really bad dead pixels and I still am within my return period and I'm going to swap the phone out. I don't want dumb customer service thinking flashing caused the dead pixels. Wish there was a way to fix the pixels i've did some searches nothing really worked. Thanks point me in the direction how to remove HPSL.
reflash stock rom
flash any of the tmous stock roms over usb, then run hspl1024 and choose 2.08.0000
Ok recently I flashed the version 2.10.1 *No Stock SPL!!! to get my phone back working like it was from t-mobile so I need a different stock rom with an SPL correct you stated. Flash a stock rom then run hspl1024 and choose 2.08.0000 what is 2.08.0000 the radio or rom, because I don't see that version on the thread with the stock roms. I just need a little more clarity before doing it thanks.
Ok I think I understand what you're saying now I'm going to try to get it done and let you know what happens thanks appreciate it.

basically you no longer need to find a stock rom with a stock spl, , , hspl1024 now includes the stock spl as well as the hspl. when you run hspl1024, there's a dropdown list. If you pick one that ends 0000 then it will flash a stock spl to your phone. If it ends hspl, then it flashes hspl to your phone. easy.

sam - thanks for you info and help, lots of people are asking and you have been very clear in how to flash custom roms after flashing the 2.13 rom. Do you know of work being done on the latest htc spl to Hspl? - so that flashing an old rom will again not be needed?
side question - does the spl have anything to do with performance or battery life? I'm on my 3rd day of this battery charge, I rarely have made it to the 2nd day before.

There seems to be two ways to get this done. First is that you can download the standard 2.10 rom, rename the nbh file to leoimg.nbh. Copy it to the root of your sd card (maybe best to use a different one than the one that came with your phone) and run it from boot loader. This will restore the image, radio and spl from that rom version.
The second one is to wait until HSPL1024 is upgraded to allow it to be used with the 2.13 rom, and then you can flash cooked rom's onto your phone.
I haven't actually done either of these, this is just my understanding of how it should work. I've flashed the 2.13 rom, and now can't flash a cooked rom to the phone, so I'm trying to decide which path I want to take.
Does anyone have any info regarding mods to HSPL1024 for use with the 2.13 rom?

no need to wait, just flash 2.10 rom using sd card which will downgrade spl to 2.08 so hspl will work again.

So from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655653 that one that says 2.10.1 *no stock Spl !!! is the stock 2.10.531.1 that came with the phone when i bought it? or not and what means no stock spl
I'm pretty sure you want the one that does have the stock spl. That should restore your phone to exactly what you had when you bought it new. I'm not sure, but I think the one that is * no stock SPL would overwrite the rom without modifying the spl (I'm not 100% sure).
You'd have to load this from the sd card.

they're all in that thread, not just 2.13, did you look in the thread or just read the title?
pick the one that says 2.10.0 (dont worry about the extra .1 just yet, we can change that later if you want, we want the 2.10.0 cos it has the spl.)
If you currently do not have hspl on your phone, and your spl is 2.08.0000 (bootloader, tell us what it says next to spl)
then you can simply run the 2.10.0 .exe file and it will reset your rom and radio to 2.10.0 stock.
If you DO have hspl installed (i.e bootloader says 2.08.HSPL) then you can go straight for the 2.10.1 rom, flash over USB, which will flash 2.10.1 rom and radio, and when it has finished, run hspl1024, and in the list choose 2.08.0000, which will reset your spl to stock 2.08.0000
However, if you flashed 2.13 from sd card, your spl is now 2.1, so hspl1024 no longer works.
In this case, get the 2.10.0 rom, right click the .exe and choose extract here, get the file ruu_signed.nbh, copy to your sd card, rename to leoimg.nbh, flash the phone, this has reset your rom and radio, and changed your spl back to 2.08.0000, meaning you can now reflash hspl1024 and then load the 2.10.1 rom.
all sounds more complicated than it is, its all dependant on what spl you currently have. Its the spl that is critical for warranty, not so much the rom.
What makes it slightly more complicated, (and hence jumping from rom 2.13 to 2.10.0 to 2.10.1 above) is that some of those tmous stock roms come as .exe files, and some as a zip with customruu.exe and ruu_signed.nbh.
If it comes as customruu.exe and ruu_signed.nbh, then even though it is stock, it still needs hspl to flash.

ah well since you are changing from a cooked one, it is probably worth doing, just for good measure, but don't get too hung up on it, it's not that critical,, unless the rom runs badly afterthe flash.
some people emit every flash, some barely do it ever.
phew...
Okay... I've successfully gone and reverted back to 2.10.531. I initially got an error when flashing from the sd card, but it restarted itself and flashed fine. I then installed hspl on the phone and a custom rom.
I then decided I really wasn't happy with the custom rom, so I reflashed 2.10, reinstalled hspl, and then flashed the 2.09 radio over the 2.10 stock rom. Lol, I guess I'm not really very nervous about flashing anymore
One question... what is the purpose of the stock spl revisions? Is there some new functionality that goes along with an upgrade from spl 2.08 to spl 2.10, or is htc/tmobile just doing that to break hspl? It seems like once you've installed hspl, then that's the version you keep unless you flash from the sd card. At some point, is it likely that we'll need to upgrade the spl?

hspl is exactly the same as spl, just bypasses the security checks. you don't need to revert, most people just hspl and leave it set.(it protects your phone from bad flashes, it won't allow itself to be removed except by sd card)
the 0000 ones are included in the hspl program to make it easy to revert for warranty.
just reread your post.
yes higher spls have other functions or fixes or tweaks, but nothing you would ever notice.
you can happily run tmous roms on 1.42 spl with no issues.
(well, you can't cos you couldn't get 1.42 on your phone, being a tmous, but i can, and have)

Question about HardSPL, VERY important.

For the past week I've been on the fence as to whether or not I would keep my HD2, and for a couple of days I thought I was going to return it. I ended up finding the source of the problem I was having, and after really getting to understand the OS, I changed my mind.
I ran HardSPL and flashed to a couple of different ROMs, but after encountering similar issues with both cooked ROMs, I decided to flash to a stock ROM and try again. By this point, I was convinced I was going to return it, so I went ahead and flashed via microSD, uninstalling HSPL.
Now that I've decided to keep it, and figured out what was causing the problems, I would like to go back to one of the cooked ROMs (Dnik and Miri's.) I'm hesitant, because I read that reinstalling HSPL after flashing to stock SPL via microSD, I could brick my device. Is this true, or could I reinstall HSPL on my device, and start flashing ROM's again?
In the meantime, I'm making due with the stock ROM (with a bunch of tweaks installed,) and I'm cool with it, but I would much rather the one I was using before.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this!
Okay is there any reason why you went back to SPL using that method?
All you had to do is run the HSPL program and select part to SPL.
Now that you want to keep it the best thing I can tell you is to maybe go in as a warranty exchange so you don't risk it just make something up and since you have a normal SPL they should take it back.
I was actually thinking of doing that, but would rather not if I don't have to... you know?
I will keep it in mind, just in case.
First I heard of this...
I went to a HSPL'able rom with stock SPL, then I HSPL, task29, flashed new cooked rom, voila.
So if you return back to SPL from HSPL, then go back to HSPL, it could potentially skew your device??? Doesn't sound legit to me..

I was thinking the same, but it specifically says this in the tutorial on flashing for newbs. It sounds logical that if I flashed to a stock ROM with a hackable SPL version, I should be able to reinstall HardSPL... but I'm not taking the chance without confirmation.

If you read in this Thread by mskip ( senior Moderator) he explains on how to flash custom roms and if you flash a stock rom via microSD the HSPL2 would be over written by the SPL that is attached to the stock rom which means you would not be able to HSPL and could possibly brick the phone.
Flashing Via MicroSD Card
NOTE (PLEASE READ): If you flash a Stock Rom via microSD Card then it will overwrite your HardSPL with a stock SPL included in the nbh file. If you flash a v2.01 or later Rom (with SPL2.*) you will NOT be able to reinstall HardSPL onto your device and could end up bricking it. This does not apply to custom roms as they do not include an SPL. BE CAREFUL!!
1. Make sure your microSD is Formatted to fat32 (you dont have to delete all files but it is safer if you do)
2. Download your prefered Rom from the LEO Rom Develpoment Page and unzip/unrar it to your PC
3. Goto the Roms Folder and rename the .nbh file to LEOIMG.nbh
4. Copy the LEOIMG.nbh file to the root of your MicroSD Card
5. Plug the MicroSD Card into the phone
6. Reset the device while pressing the volume down button to enter the BootLoader screen, you will first see a tri-color screen with the phone and SPL Information at the top
7. Follow the On Screen instructions to start the update
8. After flash has completed, press the reset button with the stylus to reset the device.
Edit: & after reading that all over again to make sure I don't sound like a stupid idiot i still did. I guess as long as you did not install "If you flash a v2.01 or later Rom (with SPL2.*)" you will end up with an SPL so you will need to HSPL it again. Guess I should have read that more carefully sorry

So, are you confirming that flashing a stock ROM with a hackable SPL, then running HardSPL again will brick my phone?
I actually flashed to stock ROM 2.10.0 via microSD, then updated to latest stock ROM... if that makes any difference.
Edit- Just found this in the "how to flash via microSD" sticky at the top of this forum... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681317
"If you are flashing an "Official" ROM direct from HTC or T-Mobile, you will more than likely over-write your SPL (Second Program Loader). This means, even if you have HSPL installed now, you could be reverted back to SSPL, rendering you unable to flash custom ROMs.
To make matters worse, if you flash an ROM higher than 2.10 and you attempt to install the current (as of 5/21/10) HSPL, you will brick your phone. Yeah, it's bad.
So, assuming you have flashed an official ROM over 2.10 via the SD card and you decide you want a custom ROM, follow these simple directions:
(You do not have to have your phone connected to your PC for these steps)
Download the "Official" ROM from here. (Thanks to zelendel for the upload!)
Follow the instructions above to flash your phone with this image.
Once you phone has fully booted, I recommend doing an extra hard-reset.
Next, visit mskip's thread to download the latest HSPL and flash that (you can flash it either via RUU or via microSD).
If done properly you should now be able to once again flash custom ROMs. Congratulations!"
So, this contradicts what is in the "flashing for newbs" thread in the ROM development forum. Hopefully someone notices this and corrects the information accordingly... as this is can really intimidate new users.

Well according to your post you updated a stock rom higher than 2.01 but I do not know if that rom had an SPL2 because then it would over write your HSPL2. that initially what you need to find out to see if that stock rom had an SPL2 attached to it.
If you read the quote above, it specifically says "So, assuming you have flashed an official ROM over 2.10 via the SD card and you decide you want a custom ROM, follow these simple directions." This obviously means that HSPL has been uninstalled, and is now SPL2. The link he gives for the "Official" ROM is 2.10... which you can use HardSPL on (which I had to do to flash in the first place, and worked fine.)
I believe the warning in the other tutorial is to warn users, and ensure they don't try to run HardSPL on a device with a ROM version later than 2.10 (which will brick your device.) If I'm reading correctly, this means that as long as I revert back to the stock 2.10 ROM, I can run HardSPL again safely.
This is exactly why I'm hoping someone in the know will shed some light on this subject, and set things straight.
Bumping this to the top, can anyone sort this out? Today is the last day of my buyer's remorse period, so I need to know if I should exchange my device or not.

You are understanding this correctly.
If you run the 2.10 ROM from the SD card then it will remove the HSPL2 from your device (if it is the official version w/ SPL)
If you update to the 2.13 ROM from the SD card and it changes the SPL to 2.1 (the tri-colored screen), then DO NOT try to run HSPL2 (this is bad).
If you have 2.13 ROM installed and 2.1 (2.10) SPL installed onto your phone then you can install the 2.10 ROM and it should overwrite the SPL to 2.08.
Now you can install the HSPL2 again.
So to recap; get into your bootloader and find out what SPL you have 2.08 or 2.1; (You can install the 2.13 ROM without it updating the SPL).
2.08 and the word Couletta= you are good to go
2.08 and no Couletta = you can HSPL2 your phone
2.1 downgrade to the 2.10 ROM from the SD card before you even attempt to run HSPL2. and before you try make sure the bootloader shows 2.08!!
hopefully this clears it up for you.

That clears things up perfectly, THANK YOU!
I'm getting ready to flash back to 2.10 now, and reinstall Dnik & Miri's ROM... so stoked!

[Q] Need to go in for Warranty

I have a custom ROM on my device and I need to go to T-Mobile for warranty.
Can I install a T-Mobile ROM, T-Mobile_HD2_MR_Software_2.13.531.1.rar, I downloaded from their website, without creating any problems or bricking my phone?
I not asking for any guarantees, just a professional opinion.
Thanks to all for all the great work.
run hspl3, choose 2.08.0000 this will remove hspl, then flash the rom you mentioned, (just run the .exe, no need for sd card) which will return to stock the rom, radio and spl
I'm not an expert by any stretch but from the research I've done I would surmise you have to A. Change back to SPL 2.8.0000. I just changed my HSPL back to SPL 2.08.0000 based on the answer to my thread and then B. reflash the TMOUS stock ROM. I have read that reflashing the ROM will revert the SPL from 2.8.0000 to 2.10.000 which is where I started. I have seen people state that even after relashing the SPL is still 2.8.0000 so then the next step is flashing from the SD card as instructed in the tutorial on the HardSPL exe file. Hope this helps.

I just installed the stock TMO ROM and my SPL is back to 2.10.0000, just as it came from the factory so I am good to go!! Thank you samsamuel, your instructions were right on!
Thanks too All
I will charge the phone up tonight and get er done tomorrow.
Just curious, what would happen if I installed the T-Mobile ROM without removing HSPL?
Thank you all for the help.
