I love flashing ROMS but I'm curious, lets say instead of a loaded rom I just want to get a little creative. I have downloaded open home, I know how to flash kernels, I'm learning metamorph. So to my question, could I flash back to stock JFD and build the phone up from there? All ive ever done is flash pre-loaded Roms, I love the toxic series, but im looking for a little more control. A little guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Start with kb5 deodexed and mod that to your liking.
Then flash it.
Rinse and repeat.

I've had my Fascinate for a few days now and absolutely love it.
So far I've been running stock. I've replaced TW with launcher Pro, hidden Verizon bloatware and rooted my phone. Bing isn't an issue because my homepage is set to Google. Should I stay on stock hoping that I'll get the 2.2 OTA soon or should I dive in and install custom ROMS?
What would be my primary benefits if I install custom ROMS? Any disadvantages?
I apologize if this question has been asked before. I tried searching the first few pages but couldn't find anything.
no replies?
I recommend you install clockworkmod, download rom manager, and buy the premium license, and use it to make a backup of your stock rom, then in rom manager you can download many roms, kernels and themes, and if you have any problem you can always use your backups to gwt back to where you want, just stay away drom vodoo, anyways when we get feoyo, we will get a costumized froyo rom from our fine developers here at Xda

Well, about 4 days have passed, and in those 4 days, I have rooted my phone, flashed a custom ROM, and been through about 5 different kernels. I am really enjoying this experience. I have done a few other things, like set up wireless tethering, and installed a custom boot animation, but I feel this is not enough lol. I am very eager to do more, but don't know what else to do.

Start flashing CM7 nightlies
I've been the same way ever since I got into the android platform.
You can get into themes and basically design an entire theme if you want.
I always seem to come back Redemption Roms though when I'm switching back and forth in between roms. I tried the CM7 but just always end up coming back.
You guys have any idea how I can get the trackball wake feature to work with skyraider 3.5? Do I need to download a zip file or what? I was told it came standard with skyraider, but it's not working for me
It is very addicting, I must say that I at one point flashed 4 roms in one day until I found the perfect one.
I've been flashing CM7 nightlies and I'm getting ready to flash CM7 RC2. Of all the ROMs that I have flashed I must say that I am not budging from CM7, it rocks.

Haven't flashed SR in a while. Check around in settings.
You can also try out 'Launcher Pro' (easy to switch back, just uninstall) from the market.
It's pretty sweet and I've been using it ever since I've downloaded it.

Flash more ROMs and try them out. I had SR3.5 for about a week after I first rooted my Incredible. I went to Warm 2.2 for a couple weeks and then I've been on CM7 since January 10 or so. Flashing a new ROM is like having a whole new phone.
I still have nights where I'll flash one or two different ROMs, completely set them up, and then decide I want to go back to CM7 and restore my backup. I'm definitely trying the Gingerbread version of MIUI when it comes out - the current version doesn't beat out CM7 in my opinion, but the next one might.

Take your time
Just wanted to tell you to read read read and take your time. The Epic is a little more in depth unit, and the best thing you can do is research. There is a lot of memory and ram tweaks, tons of roms, and tons of themes and hacks to use. I suggest going to YouTube and checking out some of QBking77's 'how to' videos, he has tons of great stuff and is really good about how he explains everything, he also is an avid supporter...meaning he definitely will get back to you if you have any questions. As the previous poster said, it is wise to read through as much as possible though, as this unit has been out awhile and there is a lot of information, I would say 95% of your questions are most likely already answered. But good luck!

Even with reading lots of threads it would be hard to know where to start.
What you need to know:
ODIN - a tool which lets you directly flash "stuff" (roms, kernels, recoveries) to your phone when in download mode. Find threads/directions to get this all setup because you'll need it. (drivers, etc) Be careful with Odin, it can brick your phone if you don't follow directions.
CWM 3101 - Current version of clockwork recovery mod. This is what you need to be able to flash things from the SD Card.
EI22 - Current version of Gingerbread OS. Don't use anything older. The stock kernel from samsung will overwrite any custom recovery at bootup, so if you want CWM you will need to use a custom kernel. Most (all?) custom ROMs include a custom kernel so if you go the route of a custom ROM this becomes a non-issue.

rocket321, Very good information for the beginners.
Here is the link directly to QBking77. It's a step-by-step video explaining how to install my personal favorite ROM to date, "ACS ICS 4.0". Very clean look, very stable, pre-rooted, overclockable.
http://www.youtube.com/user/qbking77#p/u/30/GZCF5qXsn_M
Another thing worth mentioning is that only certain Kernel's with work certain ROM's. The kernel included in that ACS ICS ROM is the Samurai Kernel. I do recommend installing the "Samurai-2.6.35_gen1.0.4+" with the ACS ICS ROM at...

Good explanation, I didn't mean to sound off putting by saying do your own work and research...there are plenty of people in here willing to help, hence why I mentioned QBKing77; dude knows his ****, and his how to videos are great for noobs (myself included) and experts alike. I just believe you should do your homework...get some base knowledge, and jump in...you can learn a lot from how to videos, but you'll never get better of you just rely on other people to show you what to do.
Odin is key, get comfortable with this program.

One more thing...ditch the usb cable that came with the epic. Its crap. Go to best buy (or other mega store) and get a blackberry cable. You will need this for odin.

and if you love your keyboard, but hate that it tends to skip when you're typing too fast, a good rom is the way to go.
Yeah, definitely get rid of the stock Sammy mUSB, it was the cause of a lot of my initial problems. Blackberry and HTC cables have worked great.
Like I sad, these devices have been out awhile, and there is TONS of really great stuff available, check out the development section, and just absorb as much as you can...also, take advantage of the general and q and sections of the forum.
Good luck!

Hi,
I just purchased a used Droid X to replace my mom's OG droid. I read as much as I could on rooting the DX and all that jazz (completely different coming from an HTC by the way... holy hell and I am sorry).
I have already rooted the Droid X, installed boot strap... etc.
Made a backup using recovery.
I searched the forum for "most reliable ROM" and came up with rubix 2.0
I flashed it through recovery and ended up stuck at the boot motorola logo.
Panicked and stressful I have to say! WTF! Now I understand why it sucks so much to have a locked bootloader. You CAN'T boot into recovery to flash your back up! Well at least I couldn't. I tried the home button, search button boot up method and didn't work. I was getting worried....
After reading more... I SBF'd it which is a completely new thing to me. It ended up being easy but it's really lame coming from the Incredible and Thunderbolt. Again, I now feel your pain!
Anyways, I really DO NOT want to go through that again. Do you have any idea how hard it was to find a downloadable SBF file due to the megaupload shutdown!!!! I have just re-rooted after using the SBF file found here: http://www.droid-life.com/2011/09/06/droidx-gingerbread-4-5-602-sbf-released/
So after all that I am just going to ask.
What is the most reliable ROM and what SBF file do I have to download to be compatible with it???
Remember... this is for my mom... I need a reliable, stable, bug free ROM. This ROM will likely be the one she will use indefinitely so please choose one that is as stable as can be.
Thank you for all your help.
That SBF is perfect for the newest roms.
The DX is on .605...but the kernel doesn't change at all so there is literally no change if you accept the OTA or not.
Stable GB Rom...
I haven't messed around with 1st init (blur based) for a long time...so I can't say for certain.
But as far as 2nd init goes...
I'd choose MIUI.
She'll love it.
Actually, I flashed MIUI to my mom's X (who is completely tech-retarded) and she has been on it for a good 3-4 months now...
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11858-ro...charge-led-updated-bootmenu-charge-while-off/
The newest build includes a working "boot menu" that can get you into CWM from a power-off state if you ever need it.
Also...
Once you flash...
I'd HIGHLY recommend using said bootmenu to set her overclocking speeds / cpu governor.
I assume she won't be to worried about speed...
So I'd either underclock her a tad...
Or leave her at stock.
But be sure to set the CPU governor to "SmartassV2"
The phone sleeps like a champ.
Literally the second you turn the screen off...the phone sleeps...and stays asleep until a notification/screen is turned on.
FANTASTIC battery life due to this.
I mean...stellar battery.
Also, it's VERY stable.
No bugs what-so-ever...
My signature also has a DX specific rom install tutorial if you'd like a refresher on the DX.
The stock ROM isn't bad. We have a few users in my office that still use it and they have no problems at all. I like to flash a lot and I am currently on MIUI (ICS) but I am thinking about going back to Vortex. It is by far the most stable ROM I've found on the Droid X.
The best Blur ROM I flashed was Liberty 3 v2, great speed, battery etc. CM4DXGB is the best ROM I have ran, I have tried most of them and CM7 is my go to daily driver. Great overall performance, very fast, great battery once you get settled in and awesome customizations. I flashed it on my dads phone and he loved it, my Mom still has a flip phone! Haha

I wouldn't try liberty as a new user, there is a lot of customization that can confuse someone IF they aren't experienced. Apex has two days of battery life when calibrated so i would choose apex. no bugs and incredibly smooth!

I am currently using MIUI 2012.2.1 after trying liberty and one other. I really like it, but as is expected after rooting, i want to play around. Although after reading your post, not so sure. MIUI really is great. I can go 2 days without recharging if i shut down at night. I did manage to get into a boot loop requiring an SBF etc. This was traumatic, but now i know how my phone works!
So I would like to try CM7. I downloaded the latest for the Droid X. I guess MIUI does not let rom manager install roms so i have to use clockwork. No problem. Is there any thing i need to do special since i am on a 2-init rom? Do i just do a dalvik wipe, then install the zip?

Hi there, just want to begin by saying how amazing this community is. I'm new to whole Android scene (just came over from iOS) but what a welcome it has been! I'm blown away by the amount of ways you can customize your Nexus 7, really puts the iPad to shame
So I've rooted my Nexus 7 and am now hoping to install a custom kernel...however I have quite a few questions pertaining to this procedure.
1) How do I install a custom kernel (ie Trinity)?
2) I'm looking to improve battery life without compromising performance, what kernel would you recommend for this?
3) Can I still get OTA if I have a custom kernel?
4) Can I revert back to stock kernel and if so, how do I do this?
Sorry to come across as a newb, I saw a lot of helpful threads on custom ROMs however I found the stuff on kernels a bit daunting...Hopefully this thread will be helpful for others as well
Thanks again everyone.

1. just flash it in recovery, dont wipe a thing.
2. trinity
3. kernels dont have anything to do with ota. if its still enabled in your rom then yes.
4. either fastboot flash a stock boot.img or just reflash your rom without wiping anything.
5.
Worth noting that when a new rom is installed it installs its own kernel so you'll have to reflash your kernel.
I also recommend faux for good battery life. Both that and Trinity are good.
