Droid 2 Update from 2.3.20 to 3.0.0

yea it works fine, root still works. Blur is still blur but its a little smoother and profiles is a good addition.

Quite possibly the ugliest launcher I've ever seen.

cool. yeah i must have heard that a million times. so if you do a back up are you able to just flash back to it? or do you have to sbf?

Safe bet would be SBFing. I don't see why restoring a previous backup would mess it up, but it might bootloop you.

It doesn't change the kernel does it? That would be the only way you would seriously **** something up by restoring a backup.

Don't think I would drop GummyJAR ROM for this "new blur".

It does install a new kernel. I made a backup in clockwork, flashed this and have gone back to my backup without issue.

It doesn't look like it changes the baseband, anyone who has installed this have you checked your bootloader version and kernel version? Anyone been able to SBF back after installing this?

Droidlife tested the 2.3.20 sbf and said it does work. Personally I'm gonna stick with custom roms on mine, I'm not having any issues and I can't stand any version of blur and its lag.

Write permissions - better method to root?
How does one go about getting root to set RW on the app dir? I have Root Explorer installed and running as SU...but I can't change to rename some of the stupid stock .apks.
FYI - I used Tears of a 1000 Unicorns to gain root.

the last two days have been "rom trial days" ..i loaded the new gummy, really liked it, then, after reading about the 3.0, i loaded & tried it. it really has a few nice things about it...but, decided this morning to go back to fission,,,,which i did, and "lost" the 3.0 upgrade..
but, knowing these guys, we'll soon have both gummy & fission w/the 3.0 update, so, Thank You Gentlemen for all your hard work...and, hey, do you remember the days when you used a phone to talk with? Wheeeeeeeeeeee

I'll continue waiting for Team Defuse to tear this one apart. I tried dealing with Blur again the other day, and I just can't stand it. It likes batteries.

I have been trying it out for the past few days and it seems alot better. Much smoother, I like the new swype design, has a built in task manager, profiles, a few other little things and the battery life is really good. I still run launcher pro over the stock blur but even that seems to run better.

Haha, i got a kick out of this. Yea those days seem so long ago I can barely recall them.
On another note it looks like the kernel might have been update as its a slightly different number than the one on my phone. Anyone know if anything has changed for better or worse with it?

No. Its the v3.0 of the motorola blur firmware (you are likely running v2.3.20 right now) and its basically a modified version of the Froyo 2.2 Android. In your phone info you will System version and Android version. This is a system update, not an android update.

I got it to work somehow. I'm guessing the various insignificant attempts and reboots solved something. I like the ROM a lot after getting rid of the usual bloatware.

[Q] Rooted 2.2 to Rooted Gingerbread?

As my title says I am inquiring how to get from stock rooted 2.2 to rooted 2.3. I have searched for quite a few hours but all I seem to find is dead links and a bunch of instructions that say "must have 2.3.3 already installed." I mainly want to go to gingerbread to utilize the custom roms. Seeing as there seems to be no sweet froyo roms for the phone. I had a droid 1 for a while and really liked sorcery rom, but alas no such thing for the D2. All I'm looking for is a straight answer or link or link to how to get GB. Thanks for any help.

To get Gingerbread would require flashing a ROM that has it, since you can't flash a kernel. Your best bet is CM7 if you want that stock feel but I would recommend Miui since it is a lot more polished and is basically a whole new, fresh redesign of the system.

So, what your saying is that if I flash CM7 I can then Flash roms such as apex or ZS that require you to already have GB? Also, I see that you have an DInc, those are much easier to deal with aren't they? I really doubt I'll be using MIUI, I tried it multiple times on my DInc that I had(sold it b/c of the horrendous batt. life, even after rom/kernal) and I honestly don't like it, I also don't like CM very much but I guess if i have to flash that then another I guess that is what I'll do.

Miui is great once you install a launcher. It gives it more of that Android feel. The newest builds have been very polished and smooth. It has been great on the battery life too.
Yeah, the Inc is easier because it is unlocked (an thus you can change kernels). With the the Droid 2 you have to rely on the ROMS to update your system. It can be hit and miss depending on the ROM.

Edit: I was reading this. You can just flash the GB leak before flashing your ROM. You don't need to Flash CM7.

Ok, well, that was quite a debacle. I wish it would have been more clear that if you haven't updated to the unrooted GB leak that you just flash the rootBG leak and its all good. Nope, i flashed the unrooted leak and then took hours to find out why nothing worked then hours to sbf. Incase anyone is wondering, sbf doesn't work for beans on parallels mac, or on win7 in bootcamp. I had to use my dads dino XPS to get back to stock then flash the correct file. Half a day later I'm on zombie stomp, saw a lot of good things about it, esp battery life and thats what I'm after, battery life and just enough performance where it doesn't hang all the time. Ok, now, how in the world can I get wireless tether to work? I cant seem to find the how to on how to enable it on gb roms. Its not super important but it sure is handy in a pinch. BTW, not blaming you for my ignorance of GB install and thanks for the links

Your welcome. I get so much help from this forum that it's only fair that I give some back. It's kind of a learning experience for me when I do. Thus I try to help whenever I can.
As for tethering, I really have no idea. I've been meaning to test out the built in tethering feature on Miui. I am sure there are tethering apps you can use, though.

Yah, there is wireless tether, but it does not work. I know on htc you had to get a compatible kernel. But since motos is locked im not sure on the work around. Its a shame htc has such nice phones but such small batteries.

[Q] Need advice for most stable ROM (it's not for me!!!) and I am not DX user

I just purchased a used Droid X to replace my mom's OG droid. I read as much as I could on rooting the DX and all that jazz (completely different coming from an HTC by the way... holy hell and I am sorry).
I have already rooted the Droid X, installed boot strap... etc.
Made a backup using recovery.
I searched the forum for "most reliable ROM" and came up with rubix 2.0
I flashed it through recovery and ended up stuck at the boot motorola logo.
Panicked and stressful I have to say! WTF! Now I understand why it sucks so much to have a locked bootloader. You CAN'T boot into recovery to flash your back up! Well at least I couldn't. I tried the home button, search button boot up method and didn't work. I was getting worried....
After reading more... I SBF'd it which is a completely new thing to me. It ended up being easy but it's really lame coming from the Incredible and Thunderbolt. Again, I now feel your pain!
Anyways, I really DO NOT want to go through that again. Do you have any idea how hard it was to find a downloadable SBF file due to the megaupload shutdown!!!! I have just re-rooted after using the SBF file found here: http://www.droid-life.com/2011/09/06/droidx-gingerbread-4-5-602-sbf-released/
So after all that I am just going to ask.
What is the most reliable ROM and what SBF file do I have to download to be compatible with it???
Remember... this is for my mom... I need a reliable, stable, bug free ROM. This ROM will likely be the one she will use indefinitely so please choose one that is as stable as can be.

That SBF is perfect for the newest roms.
The DX is on .605...but the kernel doesn't change at all so there is literally no change if you accept the OTA or not.
Stable GB Rom...
I haven't messed around with 1st init (blur based) for a long time...so I can't say for certain.
But as far as 2nd init goes...
I'd choose MIUI.
She'll love it.
Actually, I flashed MIUI to my mom's X (who is completely tech-retarded) and she has been on it for a good 3-4 months now...

The newest build includes a working "boot menu" that can get you into CWM from a power-off state if you ever need it.
Also...
Once you flash...
I'd HIGHLY recommend using said bootmenu to set her overclocking speeds / cpu governor.
I assume she won't be to worried about speed...
So I'd either underclock her a tad...
Or leave her at stock.
But be sure to set the CPU governor to "SmartassV2"
The phone sleeps like a champ.
Literally the second you turn the screen off...the phone sleeps...and stays asleep until a notification/screen is turned on.
FANTASTIC battery life due to this.
I mean...stellar battery.
Also, it's VERY stable.
No bugs what-so-ever...
My signature also has a DX specific rom install tutorial if you'd like a refresher on the DX.

The stock ROM isn't bad. We have a few users in my office that still use it and they have no problems at all. I like to flash a lot and I am currently on MIUI (ICS) but I am thinking about going back to Vortex. It is by far the most stable ROM I've found on the Droid X.

The best Blur ROM I flashed was Liberty 3 v2, great speed, battery etc. CM4DXGB is the best ROM I have ran, I have tried most of them and CM7 is my go to daily driver. Great overall performance, very fast, great battery once you get settled in and awesome customizations. I flashed it on my dads phone and he loved it, my Mom still has a flip phone! Haha

I wouldn't try liberty as a new user, there is a lot of customization that can confuse someone IF they aren't experienced. Apex has two days of battery life when calibrated so i would choose apex. no bugs and incredibly smooth!

MIUI really is great. I can go 2 days without recharging if i shut down at night. I did manage to get into a boot loop requiring an SBF etc. This was traumatic, but now i know how my phone works!
So I would like to try CM7. I downloaded the latest for the Droid X. I guess MIUI does not let rom manager install roms so i have to use clockwork. No problem. Is there any thing i need to do special since i am on a 2-init rom? Do i just do a dalvik wipe, then install the zip?

How to flash CM 7.2 RC3 from 2.2.2?

i bought cheap milestone 2 and wanted to try CM on it
rooted, installed CWM
tried to flash CM 7.2 RC3 and it fails after "checking kernel version..."
so i guess my 2.2.2 is too old
went back to wiki, tried to flash their downgrade rom VRZ_A955_2.3.20_1FF_01.sbf hoping that it will get me to the right spot
no joy here as it fails (running as admin etc.) with "Phone is not compatible with multi-interface super-file."
any suggestions what to do now, as this is where i start worrying that i might do\flash something stupid and brick it

actually it was just me being dumb as i tried to install
update-cm-7.2.0-RC3-droid2-signed
instead of
update-cm-7.2.0-RC3-droid2we-signed
as WE in filename means that this is rom for global, gsm version (that i have)
it updated ok, but all i get now is motorola logo and then black screen, i can't even get CWM to start...

Hi, first you may know, there are two different phones Droid 2 and Milestone 2 (A953), maybe you are trying to flash wrong sbf to your phone.

yup, just figured it out, had to flash back to 2.2.2 with
MILS2_U6_2.4.24_SIGNED_UCAMILESTONE2B1B80E100E.0R_UCXMILE20RTGB_P040_A013_HWp2a_Service1FF.sbf
and is working now...
for some reason i thought that droid 2 global = milestone 2
what should i look for if im interested in most stable rom for milestone?

Indeed, be sure of the sbf version.
Try going back to stock and do it again, cleaning data, cache and dalvik before and after update.

Most stable roms, IMO are MIUI 2.5.25 and CM7
Now i'm trying CM9 (20120602) and i'm enjoying, still checking. Seems like it's worth the try.
Still some issues to solve, like recording, etc... but looks like good for daily use.
People say that MIUI tends to give some compatibility issues sometimes. And Cm7 fails to run some apps... like ShadowGun (well, in my Miles it fails hehe).

I'm very happy with MIUI from Will5, check it. It has very good battery life, the rom is smooth and stable and very addictive =D. I got small amount of forbidden crashes. I'm trying other roms as well but always come back to MIUI until better rom comes out, if it happen sometime. It has froyo kernel and i dont have any strange touchscreen bug, but the touch responsive is a little less then newer kernel, thats no problem for me.

trying it now, installation hints states "Flash UPDATE_2.5.25.zip from cwm 4.x.x.x or greater"
how to get cwm 4x?
all i found is 2.something in cm wiki and 3.1 in bootmenu
anyway i installed it with 3.1.0.0 and it seems to be ok

I installed it as you without any problems, I think it can be flashed from recovery from droid2bootstrap. If you dont like MIUI you can try another ROMS maybe original 2.3.4 sbf, in developer section is manual to get out the blur (and bloat) from stock roms. I test it someday but Im happy with MIUI.

miui installed fine, it looks great, but after some basic configuration launcher start FC, as i dont have time to experiment just now i flashed latest CM7 i found (cm7-120221-1901-NIGHTLY-Milestone2.zip) and it is working perfectly, just as good as on my LG P990

Thinking of Rooting or adding ROM

Hi guys, I'm totally new, as in I know not a thing about rooting or changing the ROM or anything, and after 1.5 years of owning this on stock android, it's time to take the plunge and see what ROMs are efficient and fast.
From what I heard, the ROM is like the OS. Do I need to Root in order to change the ROM? If yes, how long does it take? If not, how long does it take?
That's it for now, I am interested in the newest and fastest ROMs, I think CM 10 was one of them which I was looking at.

Yes you need to be rooted... you can search in Google on how to root the nexus as though I highly recommend going to 'nexus s hacks' website for a good tutorial :thumbup: and yes I do suggest cm10 with Marmite kernel

The pros are that u can customize ur phone any way u want and u get rid if the unwanted junk apps that ur cell provided makes u have when u get a phone... its called bloatware! Custom ROMs speed up ur phone and once u get used to it, then u can add a better kernel and other tweaks that will keep u and ur friends in awe.
Its a quick process.... less than 30 minutes
But
read, read and read some more.
Ur only as good as the info u read and understand cuz if u flash(install) an improper ROM then ur phone is dead!
So Google some searches for ur phone only and read of possible errors & tips so u know where to look in case u screw up.... cuz we all do screw up.
Roms: look at the development section and see what ROM interest U. I wouldn't flash a different kernel until U actually know what one is. And dont be to concerned with themes until u pick a stable ROM cuz some ROMs already come themed.
Good luck and do not take some of the smartalics or jerks on these threads to serious.... they mean well but are just tired of the same new Rooter's ignorant questions they just forgot that they were once new to all this.
And if someone does help u then hit the "thanks" button below the reply since some of these guys need them or it just makes them feel better about using their time to actually reply to ur needs. I myself can care less for them but I've read enough that some developers need them for status and money backing to their ROM's development hard work and time.

You can also use a one-click-root tool. This will root your phone with your just one click. Its as easy as that. I highly recommend you to Google that as well. I used this as well as the method described on http://www.nexusshacks.com.
WARNING 1: UNLOCKING YOUR BOOTLOADER WILL ERASE ALL DATA ON YOUR MEMORY. MAKE A BACKUP OF YOU MOST IMPORTANT STUFF!!! You will have to unlock your bootloader only once. afterwards, you can flash as many ROMs as you wish to, without losing any of your data on the storage.

So, once I unlock the bootloader, and flash a new ROM, everything else is erased right, and I start from scratch? My contacts are the only thing saved on my SIM card/Google account?
And secondly..what ROM do you guys recommend, the one I am looking towards is CM 10, it is the latest and that's the one I've heard the most when it comes to ROMs..

There are many ROMs out there that are awesome ! It just depends on you taste though and yes when you unlock your boot loader everything in your phone is erased but you can backup your contacts to Google account and I'm running on slimbean because I love the dual pane mode

Yeah its all erased. I use Google voice for backing up all my texts, voicemail call log etc... its also a great way to never miss a text or call... just go online or open up the app.
Backup ur files to ur computer and then root. Then put back ur media files... music, movies & pics.
Always sync Google acct b4 flashing and
I recommend the newest slimbean 3.0 also since it has everything including a great kernel.

I recommend using MMetal Dragon Overlord 4.1.2 because it is extremely smooth! although its not even close to cm10 on tweaking and modding base. A cm10 stable has just been released, so check that out as well!

to have your phone rooted is just take less than 1 hour (if and only if you've already had all files needed and no errors occured )

for some reason CM10 Nightly 11-23 version + matr1x v24.0 (OC'd @ 1320mhz) is the FASTEST combination for my i9023 so far.
Temple Run Brave doesn't lag at all.

I've had my NS for a year or so now...and I thought very long before finally taking the plunge to root & flash Althought I have only flashed 2 different custom ROMs so far, I am constantly looking for furthermore to enhance my phone. Initially I only wanted to root to get to overclock my phone and for BLN access, since my only grudge with the NS was that it didn't have the notification LED. But now I'm totally absorbed by the various extra settings and customisations that these custom ROMs bring with them
I haven't used a 1-Click tool for rooting so the initial process to unlock the bootloader & root took me quite some time...but after that flashing the ROMs and kernels is only a matter of minutes. I definitely recommend it!

Totally agree with you on this. My only regret is that i should have made this jump much earlier .
I was also unhappy about no notification lights on the Nexus S. I just tried the CM 10 ROM and was surprised that the touch keys light up for notifications.

ROM better Stock
I prefer use custom rom (4.2 for nexus S) because reactivity and performances are better.
Why use 1GHz phone when you can have 1,4GHz....?

Custom rom = Customisation
With custom rom you can custom all in your device
And you can have the latest version of android
