Hey guys, just got a chance to flash something on my DHD after exams, but as I always do a Nandroid backup prior to flashing,I faced an annoying issue.
First off,I have LeeDroid 3.1.1 with EXT4,dunno if it has anything to do with it.
Now,I reboot into recovery(with everyway possible) and make a backup.I have 3.5 free gigs and backup goes well, file is about 1.6 gigs(huge! ).Then,I reboot and check the md5 with Android File Verifier(very handy btw) and it says either that it can't verify my data.img or,in the case of my last three tries,it says the md5 file is empty,so it's corrupted in any case.
I'm not talking about some random cases, but since yesterday I might well have made ten to fifteen nandroid backups and ALL were ****ed up.
And what's worse? My ORD is itching me!It overwhelms me!
Any ideas guys?Phone's getting desperate as I'm losing my temper(I'll break it if it continues like this)!
Thanks guys!
Still nothin' eh?No one got this problem?

I realise that Android file verifier has told you that the Nandroid backup is corrupt but is it really or a problem with android file verifier?, What version of CWR are you running? best try the most recent which has full support for ext4. Last but least is it possible that your SD card is corrupt? possibly reformat your card or try a different one.

Well,I used both 3.0.2.8 and 3.2.0.0 but to no avail. And no,the problem isn't with AFV,I also checked with my pc.Dunno about the SD card though. If I try a different one I will lose many things as I have most games on my SD card(wouldn't have enough space in /data).And copying over 16 gigs of data isn't exactly my favourite activity.
Now I'm really depressed.

Now (and for the last 3-4 times) when I check the nandroid.md5 file it says among other things "The selected file does not appear to be formatted like an nandroid.md5 file".
Similarly,md5summer says something about an error opening md5 file(empty or something).

Certainly sounds like a dodgy SD card to me, try a different one in the phone attempt a nandroid and verify it, if it works it's your card and you wont lose anything as you can always slip the old card back in, Beware though if your card is corrupt your going to lose everything on it eventually!
I oso cant seem to make a nandroid backup ... It fails "every" time except the first time I have completely backup my DHD only... Can someone help me to solve the prob.... Plz...

I've found that if I plug it into my charger, then run it again....the message does not show up again. Atleast that works for me.

Hmmm, funny. Similar thing happened to me 30 min ago. Was backing up flipz 2.1 and restoring my daily (Fresh 1.1). It told me I had to run "nandroid-mobile.sh restore via adb", or something like that. Anyway, I did it and everything is fine. Just found it strange. Oh well, no harm done

Might be right about that, cause my battery was near dead when I tried to restore, HAHA.

Nah, that's not it. 2.5GB free space on SD card. If You have no space on the SD card it won't even allow the backup, it will let you know. INMShake may be right; battery. That screen stays bright quite a long time during backup and restore.

One other possibility, if you have renamed the backup you need to make sure there are no spaces in the name. Don't ask me how I know!
I've had the same error with a file I renamed. When I changed it back to nandroid all was good. Renaming It if it was changed.
Plug in your charger and reboot back into recovery
so weird this happened to me as well restoring between all the new 2.1's aye david question is are you gettin down on 360 or ps3
You can always root again using fresh's kitchen, that should solve your problem.
Im on the 360.....

I have found that if your battery is at 30% or lower it will give you this error. Plug it in and let it charge to at least 40% and it shouldn't be a issue.
Hope that this information helps.

Cool. Always looking for teammates.
I tend to get the same issue, no matter how full my battery is (it's RARELY below 50%).
What I ended up doing the other day to go from a 2.1 ROM back to Fresh 1.1 was to boot into recovery, wipe, flash the original Fresh 1.1 (not the backup), let it load, reboot back into recovery, wipe, and load the backup I wanted to use. For whatever reason, that worked.
Also, no spaces in your backup names, they cause problems (found that out the hard way). I'm not sure renaming your backups at all is a great idea anymore, as I'm wondering if it uses the date code in part of the process or something.
nandroid total failure
nandroid wont work for me, i tried restoring, flashing basically every option and keep getting "aborted" can someone please help!

yes same exact thing happened to me! and also, there are some files i cant put onto my SD card from my comp. some files will work when i copy them to my sd card and some wont..
happened to me as well trying to go from flipz 2.1 to fresh 1.1. i had tried a few different times to restore and got the error but never paid attention to the battery life, but since its pretty bad on 2.1 now im sure i was low. just tried it after a fresh charge and everything restored perfectly!
well i found out that it was my sd card. i couldnt believe that i didnt have enough space on my sd card because i have an 8 gig haha
so i checked it out and i only had 1 mb left of available space
so i just backed up my data and reformated my sd card.
worked like a charm
Simple guide on how to reroot without the kitchen. Put the recovery img on the sd card and run this.
Code:
adb shell
cd /sdcard
flash_image recovery [Recovery Name Here].img
reboot recovery
Im having a problem where my nandroid has stopped working. When i run it in recovery, it scrolls through all the dots and tells me my backup is complete. However, it only goes maybe 2 or 3 rows before saying it is successful.
When I look in the SD card nandroid folder, the nandroid backup is missing files. My most recent backup only has:
boot.img
misc.img
recovery.img
system.img
I just got a new 16GB SD card that I put in, and thats when I noticed it not working anymore.
Anyone had any issues like this before? Or have any suggestions. I'm running Recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2 and currently using DarchLegend v5.0.5. I appreciate any help.
FYI, this is what I get when I run the nandroid mobile shell

Try updating to AmonRA 1.6.2 recovery.
Re: Nandroid stopped working?
i've done that, sorry should have mentioned what i've tried, my thought is that it has something to do with the new SD card. I definitely have enough space, and I definitely have enough battery power (have tried it both plugged in and not plugged in fully charged, etc)
when i first got it i first for matted it fat32 on the computer, then wiped and partitioned it via Recovery, this fixed some damaged card errors i was having, but now I can't nandroid backup, perhaps i missed a step somewhere

bump again
hate to keep bumping but threads seem go so fast.
I have reformated card a couple time, to no avail, as well as switch between multiple ROMs (DarchLegend, RegawMOD, DarchDroid), and I get the same issue.
I'm sure it is something simple when I switched SD cards, but until I can figure it out, I am kind of dead in the water
Have you tried formatting the card from in recovery. If you don;t use A2SD then you can set Swap and Fat to 0. Then try to nandroid.
Tried it, no dice...
Ok, for what its worth, I SEEM to have figured it out, for anyone else that may stumble upon this issue.
I believe it was an issue between the formatting the SD Card FAT32 on my Windows 7 machine (and for that matter, it didnt work on the Hero itself). I used the build in windows format capability, as well as various partitioning programs, and my thought is none of those actually formatted it correctly. I had access to a Windows XP machine today, and formatted FAT32 on the SD card, and I appear to be able to nandroid again.

Yeah I got a 8g card that seems to be worthless now. And for some stupid reason that was one of the things I tried, formatting on my windows vista. That seem to do it in for good. It won't function on the hero well, and it practically shuts my computer down, now.
Hello, I'm running desire 3,4 and it has been working great until today. I pulled out my battery for like 10 minutes and after I rebooted from the SD card I realized that I lost everything, all my settings, applications etc.Like if it was a fresh install. All the files on the SD card are exactly the same!! please help me!!!
Not to be harsh, but you're probably screwed. When running off of the sd card, you should back up your data.img once every week or two. It's pretty easy to do, and then if something bad like that happens again, you can just revert back to your latest backup. Some builds last a long time before they go screwy, some do it sooner, but it seems that all sd builds eventually take a crap. Ususally it's acore force closes, not loss of apps and settings though, but yeah, sd builds don't seem to last forever, so back up from time to time
Do you stop your phone before removing the battery?
If no... it's your fault
When you stop the phone (normaly) you can see that it takes some time. In fact it's not just to be annoying.
If you stopped it before, no luck.
oh i see. Thank god I have a backup of a few days ago. so to prevent this to happen I need to backup the data.img only or all the apps and settings?

just the data.img . that's where your apps and settings are, unless you use an apps2sd partition, but that wouldn't be affected by a corrupted data.img so you'd still be safe in backing up only thee data.img
And if you start using a rom that doesn't use data.img you can use a app like Titanium Backup Pro.
ok thank you!
That's a rule for any electronic support. NEVER TRUST IT !!!!
Never put vital data on only one media.
My SD got corrputed twice, my first SSD was erased by XRay scaner at airport (even if Intel said it's not possible they change my SDD 3 times for this reason and at the end gave me an updated version... since then no problem. Not possible but think what you want afer that).
So backup is the key. Any way to backup will be good.
For ex, my laptop is backuped every day on 2 different hardrives, vital data are also backuped in my phone SD and on an Internet Server !!!
Only a nuclear war can make me loose my data now
Or, flash MAGLDR, CWM and then use CWM to do backups every so often. You'll be happier with the responsiveness of ROM's running from NAND anyway
Can you "hot" copy the data.img file while Android is running or must you copy it off of the SD from winmo or from the SD installed on the computer?
Because Android caches data and have delayed writes to external filesystem, there is better make copy of data.img when Android is not running. If you make "hot" copy of data.img you may get in result damaged backup copy of data.img
I have a lot of recoveries, and backups on my current SD card. I am going to replace it soon.
Before I do...Is it safe to assume you just do a huge copy, and paste it on the new SD card, then just insert in phone?
Can someone please provide some guidance?
Thanks a lot for any replies. I did a search as well, but only found for other phones, not sure if our MT4G has any quirks, that would make it different
Shouldn't be a problem. That's what I have been doing for years and nothing has screwed up.

same thing I do. just make backup copies onto your computer and when you get the new card, format it, then put the files on there. easy as that
Thanks guys!
Is it normal when copying/pasting, SD from Desktop to MT4G, that .data, and .img for backups cannot be transferred?
I cannot seem to transfer those two data types into my new SD. All I am copying is old Restores, that I know worked good, but that type of data won't seem to go over
Anyone have this happen? Is it normal? I am worried I don't have recoveries that will work
Confirmed, recoveries do not work, I get MD5 mismatch. How can I copy these back?
I did what was said as copying old SD files to Desktop, but on paste to new SD card, would not transfer some files.

I did this a couple of times ans had no problems you had with those two files. I suggest you reformat the card put the files in there again and upload a new rom. Flash clockwork recovery 3.0.0.6 then try to restore one of those nandroids.
Thanks for checking Lake, I will definitely try that! I hate the fact that I like so many ROMS that I switch back and forth every week. It's like a new phone every week! Minus the creaky buttons, ha!
uh oh, formatted card, now none of my backups will copy the .img or .data files. Oh geez
edit: quick format and format make a difference?
I did a quick, trying normal format now
Hey guys,
Was using my Vega fine the other day...
Was using the new shuttle tool to read from a usb stick and all was working fine. Gone to use it today and it says the SD card is damaged and can't read it?
Have i done some thing wrong?
Its telling me to format it but i dont want to do this as it has ALL my apps and everything else are on it!
Can you connect your SD on a computer?
Then you could try and backup your data, format it and restore data back onto your SD.
Will give it a go!
Nope, it is still showing as corrupt!
So means I need start all over again right? What could have caused this then?
Do people take a nanodroid back up and save to a PC for just this occasion?
Ok, have got the vega ok again however all the Apps that were stored on the SD card are naturally not working, says that they are not installed... so going to the market on the vega I can see about 10 that are not installed.. have installed these and all are fine. I go to the market on the PC and can log in fine, go to my apps and can see all the apps that are on the vega, however if i now to go to install them again it says i have no device linked to this account? How? I have not changed any thing? Any ideas?

I have also made my SD card corrupt in my SGS.
Corruption on SD card occurs if your phone crashes and you take the battery out (abnormal shutdowns).
But don't know how the Vega could get SD card corruption, you can't take the battery out and as it seems you're the only case here.
Maybe your microSD card was already corrupt when you bought it.
And you first noticed corruption when you wrote to that bad sector on your SD card.
It could have also slowly degraded and more and more corruption could occur.
hi,
i've similar issue, but once i reseat the sdcard it's fine again.
i also notice if i insert a mobile stick it shows sdcard requires format - damage...
maybe it's the format of the sdcard?

If you actually have corruption on your SD then I would suggest you try to test it more extensively.
Calculate how much free space do you have on your SD card and then find data with same size on another computer (actually it must be few MB less than free space on your SD) and make an MD5 hash from those files (create MD5 file with hashes and filenames).
Insert the SD card into your computer or connect it thru your phone/tablet.
Copy those files from your computer onto your SD card to fill it up as much as possible.
Restart your computer and phone/tablet.
Then copy those files back from your SD card onto your computer and verify the MD5 file against the copied files.
It's a strong possibility that you would then notice CRC missmatches.
If not then your SD card is really safe.
My phone says that the SD card is OK, but some files there don't copy back at its full length, therefore become corrupted.

In short MD5 is a short hashed value that is uniqe for each content/file (if file content is the same). With that MD5 value you can check content/file integrity (that some content hasn't become corrupted in a transfer process).
If you're using windows I really can't help you much there, because I use Linux.
I think this one works OK (you can also make SFV, MD5 is not really needed):
http://www.quicksfv.org/download.html
If it doesn't work for you, you can find some more if you go to:
http://www.download.com
and search for "md5" there.
Microsoft has also an app for checking file integrity.
Or you can google for "md5sum" for more info (google knows everything).
are you running a custom rom or stock rom? The reason I ask is because I have had errors on nearly all the Modaco roms I have tested and the solution was to use moddedstockv2 and upgrade to vegacomb9 (I know it seems extreme but it is a much more stable rom than the modaco roms in my experience)
Loui - I on th latest Vegacomb
Yani - cheers for your help mate.
Ah well it may well be just a hardware problem then (I'm sorry I know that is not much help to you) perhaps you could tell us how lod the stick is or if you have been copying lots of files to and from it.
The reason I ask is because all things have limits and expiry dates even if they are not shouted about on the packet; Maybe the stick has reached one of these limits. If not then you could probably get a refund from the store you bought it from or a replacement from the vendor (as I recently got for western digital hard-drive that had SMART failure)
Also is it working okay now or have you had issues since the corruption?
The card is only about 3 weeks old, has not had much use if honest. Seems to be working ok now although since the market issues I have not been using it any where near as much as before so I cant give an accurate answer.
I think it may have been me messing around with the host mode or some thing as it did say i had removd a card that was mounted... i hadnt, i had just turned some thing off... so it could well be that which caused it!
Thanks for the info though mate, might see if can get a refund!
Hi, I had the same issue, I had tried to move an app from tablet to SD card I then got the same error message about the SD card needed too be formated. Check your card in your PC, it will most likely be OK. I then reinstalled vegacomb 3.2 update 3. Make sure you wipe cache, factory reset and wipe Delvic then reinstal.
That will fix the issue, the chances of your micro SD card becoming unstable after 3 weeks are slim.
Res
I often have this problem but after a restart it works again.
