[Q] Bloatware on one phone but not another? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For Christmas I got my Mytouch 4g. A few days later, my dad let me know that it was buy-one-get-one-free so he has one as well. He doesn't really know much about it other than it's basic functions, point being it's not rooted or modified in any way. Mine however, is rooted, ROM'd, radio'd, and engineering hboot'd.
I took a look at his phone and saw that he had the "T-mobile Mall" bloatware app installed, but it wasn't on mine while I was on stock. I remember this app from the 2.3 leak when it was on my phone. I never removed any bloatware from my phone. The day I rooted was the day I went to Cyanogenmod.
How is it that he had more/different bloatware than me? I never had that on my stock ROM even when I was unrooted, and I can't find it in the market so I dont think he got it there...

Got an evo!

Coming from my hero just picked up an evo today. Just wanted to say what up to the new community. Been having 100% awake time though. no root yet. Anyone else have these issues outta the box. Gonna try a firmware update and see if that helps at all. No apps installed either aside from all that lovely bloatware.
i would recomend rooting your phone and installing a custom rom. I was off phone 12 hours today and had 80% battery life!
Congrats, it's a great phone. 100% uptime is probably due to setting up a Flickr account. There is a bug where Flickr account makes Calendar cause 100% uotime. Just go to Accounts and Settings and remove Flickr account and it should fix the problem.

...off phone? And which ROM were you using?
Yeah the uptime seems to of fixed itself. I love the phone, its super quick. I'm actually enjoying sense UI as I would disable it on my hero. I remember reading the ota updates broke root for the evo, is this true? And anyone had success running RUU or know if its capable to successfully unroot if anything goes wrong? Was always scared about unrooting my hero due to the dreaded error 110 that would come up. The phones fast enough now, but I wouldn't mind getting rid of some of these apps and trying froyo out.
Gratz on the upgrade!
I did toast's root 1 and 2 on the OTA updated phone and flashed Fresh's ROM with no problems. I have been running it for a week now and it's perfect! The only thing is you have to uninstall the wifi tether app and install a fresh version from their google code site (kept FCing). I also noticed a very significant increase in battery life after rooting and flashing. I can go over a full day now where with stock phone I was getting to about 8-9pm before I would need to recharge.
Good luck!

I'm still iffy on rooting it :/ the only reason I rooted my hero was because I needed to I feel like to make it fully functional. I am worried about any issues evos are having and being within my 30 day exchange I might wait. I don't want another RUU horror story if they still exist. Lol.

Why did you have to uninstall the WiFi tether? What google site has code for the EVO? What is FCing?
Thanks

[Q] Why root?

So I am really liking the aria , but I am wondering what more could I do with it if I root it. So can someone tell me the pros and cons of rooting. I hear that rooting takes some time so is it worth it. What roms can I run, and will I be disappointed when running them because they crash. Thanks
Rooting the Aria takes around 15 minutes if you do it right (use the unrevoked method).
Pros-custom ROMs, add your own mods, etc.
Cons-voids warranty (supposedly...I've heard HTC won't deny your claim)
There's probably more of each, but they don't apply unless you're into programming.
There are two main custom ROMs for the aria:
Liberated-removes ATT bloatware, enables sideloading...great ROM when I used it, won't crash (under normal circumstances) because its basically stock. Great if you like Sense.
Cyanogenmod-no Sense, adds new customizabillity, no bloatware/sideloading block/etc...also great, you might experience small problems with GPS and bluetooth (just from what I've heard) but nothing major.
You can check out the Aria Development forum here for more information.
I still haven't done it with mine, even though I had my G1 rooted and running cyanogen within a day. The difference? The G1 wasn't completely functional stock; the Aria is. As I had to go on a 5 week tour of Central Asia right after I got the Aria, all I did was unlock for a parade of strange sim cards. It falls into the "not broke, don't fix" category.
That said, now that I'm back for a little while I'll probably root and at least put liberated on it. The att apps don't take much room or cause any trouble; it's just knowing that they're there and can't be taken off...
If that makes sense to you, root.
If not, don't. The phone works great and has less, well, "idiosyncrasies," shall we say, than cyanogenmod ever did.
When you root can u get the htc stock rom if you dont want the custom ones

Just root and have fun with it. You will get all the information you need from the good folks here. Your phone will be all it can be when you release it form the restrictions of ATT and HTC.
ill do it when i have time i guess there is no harm, but right now im busy with college apps
Unrevolked only takes 5min.

[Q] Where do i start?

I finally got my droid x about 2 weeks ago after waiting almost a month on backorder.. Since i ordered it ive gotten an pneumonia lung infection as of saturday tonsilitis and fevers.. Plus two weeks in i got laid off so this hasent been the greateast of time. Ive been pretty out of it and yea.. anywho. I got this and first thing i did was Root via the "DroidX Root" with the Root Me and UnRoot Me " buttons. Ive owned a G1 and a Droid Eris prior to all this and loved em both. Rooted them gotten the recovery image's custom roms ect. With this im getting confused. I think its partially because ive been so ill and disoriented half the time. Also because of this efuse crap and what not. Yes ive googled and searched but again ive been fairly out of it so im still not certian what i should do here. I downloaded some apk file Recovery Bootstrap v1.0.0.3 that i was told i needed to get but again...
I want or at least i think i want to get to 2.2 im currently still on the 2.1 build it shiped with. i have *228'd it or changed the firmware in any way all ive done is rooted it.
Im having issued with the data connection. My browser seems to hang a good 50-60% of the time wether im on my wireless g connection at home or on 3g. Ill listen to slacker radio and often it stops for sometime and either wont resume playback until ive closed and re-opend it or just does it on its own.
Ive heard of people getting roms on it but others tell me there not "real".
Also its "fluid'ness speed" seems to be jotty at times. I havent hardly installed much on this and its slows down really bad at times.
Basicly i like modding my phone and really enjoy all the work people put out to fully give us the full capability's of these pieces of hardware we buy. But i dont feel like im getting that.
What other suggestions can you all give me to do to my phone, to speed it up back it up remove this crapware like dlna ect. I have seen some threads about doing this but then people telling me they get stuck at the boot logo cause they messed something up and i dont really wanna do that.
What have you done with your phones? How well do they run?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post and i look forward to everyone's reply

Sorry to hear about your problems. I just went through a week of hell before being diagnosed with pneumonia this June. So I know how it felt.
Basically, even though 2.2 OTA is available, if you mess up your phone while modding, there is no stock image to fall back to, so you'll be stuck with a bricked phone.
The best solution right now is to upgrade to original 2.2 leak. Then you can install leaked 2.3.15 which is the same as OTA (with a difference of being deodexed and rooted). In this case even if you have problems, you can always flash original 2.1 back and start from scratch.
rootzwiki has a good amount of info on how to do all of this. But of course feel free to ask questions.

For those holding out on root & awaiting "Official 2.2 OTA", DON'T!! -> read w/in ->>

For those holding out on root & awaiting "Official 2.2 OTA", DON'T!! -> read w/in ->>
When I got my Evo, I wanted to wait for the official Sprint ROM/OTA upgrades because I wanted to keep my phone stock. I didn't want root to affect my phone's ability to OTA upgrade and get the latest and greatest from Sprint.
After many advice from others, I decided to root. This is where you will see the repeating theme - "I rooted and loaded a ROM and have never looked back", or "I rooted and upgraded the ROM from the dev section and have never been happier". I certainly agree.
The fact is, when (now IF) the official 2.2 comes out, you will get the EXACT OTA content here just as quickly (probably faster) and be able to flash to that if you wish. Most likely, at that time, you will want an enhanced version such as deodexed. It is not worth holding out on root just because you want the OTA.
With root, you are opening new options such as forcing the phone to roam only, make real/full backups, modify your phone both visually and functionally, and so much more. After root, battery life can certainly be improved by tweaking your phone (remove bloatware, keep unwanted services from starting, etc.)
When I got my Epic, I rooted immediately. I have been running DK28 since it dropped and enjoying what 2.2 has to offer. If/when the official comes out, I will upgrade. There is simply no risk of missing out.
So for you who are on the line, I encourge you to root and move forward. You will have a new world of options and enjoy your phone so much more.
Cheers.
It's true, and we're not that far from seeing a true Gingerbread port too.
Not to mention, with Odin, this phone is extremely hard to FUBAR and very easy to revert back to stock if needed. One click root makes the rooting process brainless...
I was in the same boat a few months ago. I viewed "rooting" as a hack or purposely "damaging" the phone. Eventually, I caved in; everything is hindsight from that point. Now, I will NEVER use a stock ROM again. Having access to the system allows me to take control of the device that I OWN; not Sprint or Samsung. If I don't want and application on the phone, I simply remove it. If I want to change the appearance, I install a theme.
Honestly, if you own an Epic, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't root the phone. Heck, I'm not even using 2.2 for the lack of a stable GPS lock...

I agree with most of this. But from my point of view, I don't even use it for the control, I use it cause it works better. Oh, and the themes. I just hope the devs and themers stick around a while, cause I have this phone for another 20 months :/
new devs and themers will come along. the cdma touch pro 2 is approching 18 months in age and when i stop by that forum, its just as busy as ever, and i dont even recognize the names of roms people are talking about, because the chefs that were cooking when i was rocking that have moved along, but new ones are stepping up in their place.
Installed TrulyEpic 1.2 last night in just a few minutes. No problems at all. GPS is fantastic (I thought it was working before, but now - ) Is it just me, or does the stock ROM limit the display brightness? I think it actually LOOKS better but YMMV.
It's comforting to know that I now have a phone that will probably never be truly obsolete for the next couple years as long as there are ROM builders out there.
but i tried to root using the one click and recovery and had issues it would tell me permission denied at the end after it reboooted, i used z4 to root and it worked fine, tried to use it again and still same thing, then installed rom manager and then try clockwork, nogo. so i took it all off and will jsut deal with it when it comes ota

I'd agree with you, except that I've had all kinds of issues rooting my Epic, ranging from USB drivers that fail to install, various one click root scripts that error out, a cruddy usb cable from Samsung, and an inability to get Odin to even look at my phone crosseyed.
I'm not brainless ... but nothing about rooting and flashing my phone has been straightforward. After wasting hours wading through (volunteer-written, open source, karmically-blessed) inconsistent instructions, I've lost patience. I just want an official, OTA copy of Froyo that isn't going to brick my phone or waste my time.

I've never had this problem. There must be something wrong and it isn't the one click. Could be your USB cable. Make sure your phone is in debugging mode. The OP is 100% right. Why use any stock ROM? If we do ever get the OTA, our devs will make it better and in about 100 different flavors.

I have been holding out but even my patience is tested...
It was tested even more today trying to find a way to root without a PC (as I don't own a PC... well I have one that runs Win2K and no internet at home... yeah.) I did download z4root but it never got past the first screen...it literally loaded for an 1hr the 1st time and 35mins the second before I got ticked and just uninstalled. I may be new to the android scene (long time winmob user that fled after testing a wp7 craptastic phone) but something just isn't right here X/ I mean really.... I simply want flash (outside of skyfire) and to wirelessly tether without having to pay ANOTHER $30 a month.... ...
So yeah, /rant
Ota can come ANY DAY NOW *looks angrily at the sky*
Epic is as Epic does

Good point. But unless Samsung or sprint announce the update is out. Somebody has to be stock just incase they quietly release the update.

yep. Im staying on stock for the simple fact that my phone aint broke why try and fix it lol.
I recently flashed DK28, then converted to ext4 and the bonsai mod. Froyo means I can view more webpages and download the froyo apps from the market place. ADW lancher was slow on 2.2, but lancher pro works fine. Also I wasn't getting great battery life but it's back to normal after I set my screen brightness to automatic. Overall I'm happy with my decision.
I too was one that didn't want to root and I was paying for the sprint hotspot :-\ but once I got the first bill for $130 I quickly youtube how to videos on rooting the epic and never looked back. 2.2 runs great with my only bug being, on some calls out I couldn't hear the other person unless I put it speaker phone. I worked my way around this bug by just hitting the speaker button before every call then quickly hit it again to shut off the speaker. It takes very little effort and I'm happier than ever with my epic and I don't give a rats ass about the OTA 2.2
The reason i first rooted was for wireless tether and to get rid of all the bloatware. After that i found all these awesome root apps like ADFREE and ShootME titatanium back up and many others and i can now not live with out adfree its the best app ever!!
After trying wireless tether it was ok then mobile ap came along and i love it. And for this reason alone im staying stock and honestly this is the first phone that does everything i need and doesnt give me any issues even on stock rom. I did get a custom kernal i flashed a good amount of the 2.1 roms and didnt really care for any of them besides noobnls rom. i mean i like custom roms that are blank of extra bloatware and what not.
But yes i agree dont wait to root, you get so many added benefits to make your phone run fast and get many free apps that are ad supported but because of ad free they are like the real one.
Best decision to root.
And for any reason i need to go back to stock to take the phone in i have all the stock flashables on my sd card so i just flash them and its easy as pie.
One click root never gave me any issues with the samsung cord or with any other cords i have.
I agree, I just got tired of it and rooted and installed a custom ROM (Trulyepic 1.2). It's definitely nice. It's also nice to feel free from the shenanigans of corporations trying to do as little as possible to make money off you while maintaining PR.
I admit, it's a bit scary to do with your phone. I'm lucky in that I've gotten familiar with rooting with my Viewsonic Gtablet, but I have to admit that I was pretty nervous the first time.

[Q] Samsung intercept, prepaid on platinumtel, is it safe to root.

Just got my daughter this phone for Christmas, through the prepaid provider platinumtel. I know that they piggyback off of Sprint towers, but does anyone know if this is safe to root and flash a custom Rom onto. All of my rooting and flashing has only been done with OG Evos, but I would like to give my daughter's phone the freedom my Evos have. Would flashing a custom Rom mess with the prepaid settings in any way?
Well I powered it up today for the first time, and its loaded with all the normal Sprint bloatware. I would like to root it if for nothing else, to get rid of sprints bs bloatware.
Sent from my now rooted, Revolutionary, OG Evo.
Where did you buy the EVO from? I am also looking for a better phone on Ptel and as you know it has to be plbl in order to get it to wwork and I have been having a hard time finding high-end plbl phones that I can get over to ptel.
J
Flashing a kernel to get root wouldn't affect the prepaid settings, flashing a rom might affect voicemail and mms.
intercept root will get temporary root, and you can then flash cm01 recovery with it, then in recovery, make a system/data backup to the sdcard, delete the bloatware in the filemanager, you can always root it later if you want with the same app

Just did it today with the apk intercept root, easy, install the app, and press the root button. It was rooted in less than 3 minutes from the time I installed the app. Now I'm just looking for a suitable Rom for it, it doesn't have the selection that I have for my evo.

I hope it works as smooth for you as it did for me. Compared to rooting mine and my wife's evos this was a piece of cake. I wasn't really expecting it to work, but it did. I installed titanium and did a backup of the apps, then installed an uninstaller to get rid of the Sprint bloat ware that came on the phone. So far it all works great. I just wish that some of the evo devs made a rom for the intercept, mik in particular. Good luck, and root on......

I also wanted to ask you what Sprint comonents did you remove? I dont have the phone with me now, but as I remember there was:

First I backed up everything I removed, then went on to Sprint football, nascar, and Tv and nav. As long as you do a backup on recovery, you can always fix it if it does kill something.

I have to add, after rooting the Intercept and removing Sprint bloatware -- HUGE performance increase. I uninstalled most of the Sprint Bloatware except the Sprint Updater, since I am not sure how it will behave.
Also added the Overclocking Widget and I have to say, very impressed with the performance now for this little Android device.

Hey guys, I'm thinking of buying the Samsung Intercept on Platinumtel. However I am totally new at this whole rooting thing. Do you guys have like a step by step process for rooting the phone and making up the proper backups so I dont break it. Also, I was wondering where you got the overclocking widget and how it affects the battery life.
Thanks!
Jeremy
Her eis the deal. Look at this link, it has everything you need.
Now, the intercept as a phone, it is "ok". I bought one for my wife and for her it is fine. If you want high-end, this is not it, but at least you get 800 Mhz on your phone.

One last thing... getting any driver to work on your PC (win7, Xp, etc) is an act of God.... so that is why the apk was the only way i could root it, but it is a stuborn little phone when it gets to USB connectivity.
Link Broken
Sorry, but when I click the link it says that is forbidden. I think that maybe I just need to register on that specific forum maybe. I'll check it out. Thanks again for your help!

Thanks
Okay I got to the link now and it seems pretty self explanitory. My only last question is if we can get a froyo (2.2) update on this phone. It looks like theres been an update though Virgin Mobile...so it should work. But how can we get it on this phone with PlatinumTel?
