Can't use internet and call at the same time? - Desire HD General

Any reason I am unable to do this? As soon as I pick the phone up I lose my internet, hotspot etc..
Anyone know why? Its a right pain

What are you using - 2G or 3G?
Because if you are using 2G it is normal to disconect the internet when you are receiving a call.
Set to 3G only and try again. Only in 3G it is possible ro have at the same time call and internet data receiving.
Regards.

I think it depends on the carrier too. Not every carrier supports this (if I'm correct)

I'm on HSDPA so it's fast enough to cope.
How do I set it to use 3G only?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk

Settings > Wireless and Networks > Mobile Network Settings > Network Mode > 3G only

You cannot use ANY DATA while on a call, it has always been this way.

2G(EDGE) disconnects while on call but 3G always remains for me while even on call.

I've used this feature before by switching on the speaker to quickly Google something. I was on an H/3G connection at the time and I didn't have a problem. I can also use glimpse while on a call, but that can heat up the phone a bit.

Not true, there have been many times that I have been on the phone and quickly browsed the internet at the same time on 3G, both on my blackberry bold and my desire hd. Best option is to reset your phone if you are sure you're on HSPDA

Wifi or 3G

Evening all,
Would anyone be able to enlighten me about how Android selects between wifi and 3g?
i.e. If I have a wifi connection established what governs that traffic is routed via the wireless connection?
Thanks!!
I have a data counter app (3g watchdog) and looks like when WiFi is in range android use it for data than 3G.

That what I expected. REason I wanted to make sure it defaults automatically is I'm going to France (live in UK) and want to use the phone for data without incurring stupid data charges for roaming
There is an option to turn on/off data roaming so when you go abroad you don't have to worry.

Anybody notice using 3g use more battery then wifi?

If I enable 3g, my battery only can stay around half day. But when I only enable wifi, it was almost double the time.
Anybody know why?

yes... same here 3g uses more data.. i find if i turn on wifi at night battery lasts longer.. and if you disable data totally it lasts even longer.
Yes, if disable all the internet connection. It can last 3 days for me.

That's normal and quite reasonable.
With 3g your phone has to transmit with much higher energy (since the antenae are potentially thousands of meters away). With WIFI it only has to transmit to 100-200 meters max.
Have my phone set for 2G with wifi always on.
Use wifi at home.
2G is enough for all normal syncs, and if I need more speed for anything else I temporarily switch to 3G for that.
This way a single charge last me well over 24h under normal usage. Don't even know exactly how much.
With the phone set to 3G, the same usage patern will eat a full charge in something like 8h.

Is it possible to set to '2g only' in froyo?
So far I can only find the option to completely switch off data, but not choose the type of mobile data connection.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Yes switching to '2g' only is easy, you can find it in wireless settings under mobile networks. It's the 'network mode' on there.
Myself I use 3G only because I listen Internet radio a lot in my car and of course 2G is not enough and if it's set to both 2G and 3G the connection breaks way too often. Of course I couldn't do that if there were areas that would not cover 3G.

Here is the right answer, and the battery consumption can be quit high if you have poor 3g reception or u are just between edge/3g signal the phone consume much more power when it tried to find the best signal

In Network mode, select GSM or WCDMA for 2g?

Is that really true? When Idle, is the phone transmitting? Or only receiving?
Just go and install JuiceDefender, It turns off 3G when screen is off. Simple. To set to 2G only then choose GSM.

3G Toggle anyone?

Is there a way to add a toggle to turn off the 3G and only use 2G/Edge? I get ****ty reception at work and found that when I disable my 3G on my HD2 winmo, it more than doubles my battery life while at work then I turn it on again when I leave.
I have tried a couple of toggle wigets from market but they either dont only turn off 3g, or do nothing more than just bring up the sttings page where I still cant do it.
I only want to use 2G while at work as the 3G reception is poor and the radio uses lots of juice trying to establish a 3G connection.
Thanks,
Jeff
ignore my sig, I will change it soon.
Settings, wireless&networks, mobile networks, network mode, set it to gsm only. Wcdma is 3g, gsm is edge.

Thanks, but are you sure that only disables 3G and leaves 2G alone? I read somewhere that on GSM you only have voice and text messages.
I installed an app called Extended Controls and now I have to do a hard reset as I have no data connection.
Can you try this for me, put it on gsm only and see id you can still surn internet?
Thanks,
jeff
I promise it works lol. Mine is set that way right now and I'm using the 2g internet

Thank you, it seems to be working, but I had to hard reset to get my data back after installing that extended controls widget to toggle 3g with 2g. man, I really wish that worked.
And I apologize for asking a question in the wrong forum.
Jeff
No problem, I'm glad to help. Sucks that the widget forced a hard reset on you though. What happened?

3g speed

I am on cm7 rc1

And one more thing folks I tested my speed on speedtest.net app from market it shows 2.5 mbps. And even getting good speed from there when downloading apps but speed sucks when I download files thru browser

Same with mine.
On stock and cm7

Ok. I have had a little similar problem. With the default network options in cm7 nightly #115, I face a problem where if 3G signal is low (like 1point) it shifts to 2G automatically and downloads with 2G speed. Actually I can have 3G speed with that 1point signal too. I solved it by setting the network mode to 3G only. I don't know if there is an easy way to set the mode to 3G only but I will tell you how I did it.
Go to settings/cyanogenmod settings/interface/notification power widget (enable it)/widget buttons (select "toggle 2G/3G")/Button modes/Network modes. Here select "2G/3G only". That's all. Now you can toggle between 2G/3G only from notification power widget. Only negative point is if 3G signal is not available, you should manually toggle to 2G.
Maybe it helps.

Force LTE?

Sometimes I drop to 3G in my home 4G area. Turning the phone off and back on usually does the trick but is there another way to keep the 4G connection?

I believe you can set the phone to only receive CDMA and LTE in the Mobile Networks option of the settings (in the more section)
You can also set it to receive only GSM, GSM and CDMA, or all available networks.

CDMA=3G, LTE=4G. Right? Since I am on the Verizon network, the only circumstances that I would connect to GSM is if I left the USA, right? I wonder if there's a way to isolate LTE connectivity and turn off 3G all together..

You on stock or a custom ROM?
That sounds like a radio problem tbh.
You can't use LTE only - in fact, LTE requires a CDMA or GSM base for stuff like phone calls so it always has to be connected to 3g or 1x.
There's a possibility that switching airplane mode or pulling your SIM out would force LTE to reconnect
Solution: Yes you can force lte
I'm not a engineer or a radio analyst but I do believe what the previous post says about LTE needing CDMA is completely wrong - it certainly doesn't need to have CDMA or any other radio band to effect LTE. That being said, LTE is BASED off of 3G CDMA. But again, I may be inaccurate, however I think the "proof is in the pudding"......HOW TO FORCE TO LTE (ONLY)
1. Open up your phones dial pad
2. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (An app with the title "Testing" should open automatically... but not 100% sure. If it doesn't open auto hit dial....
3. Select "Phone Information"
4. Scroll down the phone information page, you should see the first button that says "Turn off radio"..... We want to focus on the item right above that. By default it's set to "LTE/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA"
5. Click on that which should provide a drop down list, with specific radio bands.
6. In your case select "LTE Only"
7. Profit!
FYI: IN "LTE Only" mode you will not be able to make or receive calls - this is good for DATA only. You can manually reset back to default mode but regardless every time your phone reboots it will go back to default.
Well yeah that's true. Not really sure if vzw will let you connect though. But yeah no calls or text
