About ten minutes ago, my phone displayed a notification that an update was ready to download. I thought this odd, because I was on a bootloader unlocked phone running .184 and rooted via gingerbreak.
It downloaded the update in about 5 minutes, then asked me to OK the installation. The phone powered down, and rebooted displaying a box with an arrow, along with four dots.
Then it stopped, and my phone is now cold. Seriously cold - no lights when charging, unable to get it to work with flashtool...
If you're running an unlocked bootloader and it asks you to update - don't, until people confirm that this was just a blip for me.
UPDATE: Holding the back (not menu) button and plugging usb cable in causes the led to light up green, but still not detected by fastboot or flashtool.

Was running .184 UK generic. Phone is unbranded, and I'm in the UK.

Didn't read this until now... Did hit the-badly-Yes-to-OTA-update... with my unlocked bootloader, and rooted phone, Swedish and unbranded.
Cold as a rock, looks like a black and grey shiny brick :-(

That should be a sticky thread somewhere. oO
Just for clarity:
Unlocked bootloaders don't mean you won't get OTA updates. Sony has confirmed on Facebook and Twitter that as long as you're running an official Sony firmware, you'll still get updates. It's only when you're running a completely custom (e.g. Cyanogen) ROM will you have to update manually.
But back to the OP, that sucks that the update messed up the phone.

I was using the rooted hk 2.3.2 firmware posted in the dev forum.
No idea about charges yet, will let you know how I get on
No problem with OTA update for me. The phone powered down and rebooted with the four dot screen and after the progress bar reached the end for the first dot, the phone turned off for a few minutes and came back on loading the second dot. There is a slight delay between each dot. The whole time USB was plugged in with USB debugging on. The fourth dot may restart the phone more than once but completed the OTA update without a problem.
For the bricked devices, have you tried pulling the battery out for a few minutes and turning on the device again?
I was grieved to hear that
In china many people use OTA update 2.3.3, then ARC dead, both locked and unlocked.
The thing about ota update is there's no much of visual progress esply during initialization during and after an update. The blank screen can be as long as 30sec.

here's the behavior of the phone.
- phone always restarts even when i'm not doing anything
- after restart, it will restart again after the loading screen (SE animation)
* this happens about 2-4x before it stays open and usable
- when charging phone, phone shut downs, no powering off phone dialog
- can't start phone after shutdown, phone just vibrates when powered on
- need to remove mc, sim and battery for about 5 mins before it can start
- now i can't really start the phone no matter what.
i've got the phone for 2 months now, and it just recently behaved like this. can someone tell what could cause all these behavior. really need your help guys.
thanks.

if you're referring to this:
- phone always restarts even when i'm not doing anything
* this happens when i'm just browsing the contents of the phone. not using any app or file manager. just looking what apps i've got through the pull up menu, the properties of the phone. basically nothing that important
if you're referring to this:
- now i can't really start the phone no matter what.
*last thing i did was charged my phone but then it shut down, and it won't start up again

Does SEUS pick up the phone?
Can you get in to Flash Mode at least or when you say not booting up at all, you mean... no power whatsoever?
Have you tried a different battery?

SEUS can detect it. There are two options right now (1) Update and (2) Factory Reset + Update. I don't to flash as much as possible cause I haven't backed up the phone yet. Will (1) Update erase my contacts and messages? There are important messages in my phone.
About the not booting up. No nothing, the phone just vibrates when I power it on. Nothing happens.
About the battery. Haven't tried a different one cause I don't know anyone else who has an x10. How much would the battery cost here?

Thrilled to receive my Nexus 10 today especially when I ordered it Tuesday evening it estimated 2-3 weeks shipping. First impressions: looks slick and is quite light.
Anyway, here's the thing - I have updated to 4.2 - but I still can't see the 'Users' section in the settings. This was one feature I was massively looking forward to - no idea why it's not there.
When the update installed, it told me it would reboot- but the device never came back on - I had to turn it back on manually. I did check in the 'About' section and I am apparently running 4.2 though...
Any ideas?

It may say upto date, but check now just incase. I had to go to home screen till it said I had update available, after that it should download and restart automatically, I was in the same boat, ordered tuesday midnight and got it this morning. After I updated i had the add user option available.

Hmm that is rather odd...I would do a factory reset just incase, better to do it now than to have all the applications and settings to your taste then have to do it.
I decided to do the factory reset, but then couldn't turn the thing on... now it seems I can't even power up the thing.
I wonder if you can do hard resets on these things..as in volume up and power button until something shows up, just throwing ideas mind.

That combination did work - it came on.
Then, the screen locked - and I couldn't unlock it again.
Damn this thing, I really want to like it but it's doing a good job of annoying me now.
Hmmm I would say take the battery out and put it back in like every trained technician would but thats kinda impossible unless you wanna break it. So the Volume up and Power button worked and you did the reset from there?
Mine did the same thing. Although it says 4.2 a few hours after using it an update message prompted me to updated to 4.2! After the update was complete the Users option appeared.

Yes, that made the screen turn on.
Then the screen turned off, I tried to turn it on again... couldn't.
Then, did a power + volume up again, turned the device on - did a factory reset, then the device turned off - didn't come back on, and still had all my data...
Now every time the device turns its screen off, I can't wake it up again.
Any luck?

Damn! I have the same issue. How you fix it. Can you help me?
Where u get the stock ROM? I have to rooting??
Sent from my Nexus 10
Ok, so here's the problem:
I plugged my limited edition white Nexus 4 into the wall charger, and it locked normally, even the lock animation came. (Didn't power off, just locked.).
I just pressed the power button as I normally would, but it did not ask me for the unlock pattern. In fact, all I could see was a dim LED backlight.
So I searched on Google and then on xda, and found a thread which instructed me to hold down the volume up and power buttons for 20-30 seconds, and then to hold down the power button. I did this, and it made my phone boot up normally. But when I unlocked my phone, I noticed that the screen was flickering. Not black and white or whatever, but between the different brightnesses. I then locked the phone (Not power off).
After turning it back on, there were no problems, in fact, I just rebooted the phone, and it seems to be working fine.
I want to know how I can prevent this problem from happening again, and what to do if this happens again.
I haven't rooted, custom ROMmed or unlocked bootloader, and do not plan to do so. All I have done yet is update my phone to Android 4.3, using an official Google .zip file I found on DroidLife. It is an official file, not a leaked build. I do not think that is relevant, but I thought I should tell you anyway. Also, this may have something to do with the charger, because the phone turned off as soon as I plugged it in, or the timing was just ridiculously good.
Please read this carefully, every line is important. Nexus 4 specs have been given in signature.
poop happens. you cant provide any logs at the moment, so we cant see what happened. just a fyi, stock, official roms, also are buggy occasionally. my guess is that it had a derp somewhere to begin with, it happens. a reboot, or a forced reboot usually resolves the situation. with root, theres a bit more troubleshooting/action that can be taken in a situation like this, maybe even some preventative action like a dalvik wipe.

If I root the Nexus 4, will i be able to install OTA?? Even installing through adb sideload is fine with me. Basically, is it possible to root and still get updates? If it is possible, what is the method to install updates? What is the most reliable method to root for Nexus 4? Can I root without installing a custom recovery? I'm not gonna install custom ROMs on the Nexus until it is outdated. Sorry about all the questions, as I am very curious.
heya guys,
I'm on stock FW on my GS4S i9505 and yesterday morning i update to 4.3 OTA.
It was working all day just fine without issues or lag for the matter.
Today morning when i woke up, my phone was plugged into the charger and was turned off.
I turned it on by couple of mins later it would freeze and wont unlock, just black screen with a red light flashing on the top left of the phone.
I had to pull out the battery and put it back everytime i wanted to try and boot it.
I did that 3 times within 10mins and the 4th time it just stopped turning on all together.
Anyone has this issue and maybe can give tips on how to fix this if possible?
Thanks in advance.

You will need to go to SamMobile.com and download the official odin flash firmware
for your phone's exact model and flash it using Odin.
That will get the phone into good working condition with the stock 4.2 firmware.
After that you can use the phones built-in updating system again and most likely it
will work just fine. Just be sure that the battery is at least half full before the phone
starts the auto-update process.
Perhaps you installed some app or game from the playstore which did not play nice
with your phone and caused the 4.3 update to get stuck or it could have been the
battery if it did not have enough charge in it.
You should try to get the phone into download mode to see if it can be Odin flashed.
Hold the volume down key at the same time while holding the the power key down
for 20-30 seconds and see if it goes into download mode.
If it does you have nothing to worry about.
NOTE: before trying download mode be sure to remove the battery for 5 seconds
and replace it, making sure the phone is in a power off state before trying to boot
it into download mode.

I'd love to do that, but i dont see how this is possible since the phone doesnt boot up at all anymore.

Maybe your battery is dead? Because it's known issue on Galaxy S4 phones.
Try another charger.
I tried with my wife's S4 battery and my colleague's S4 battery.
Also tried with 3 different charges that came with the S4, no dice... :/
I had to take it back to the store, it was under warranty still.. they are sending it back to Samsung and will get it back in 2-3 weeks, same phone repaired or a refurb i guess.
After doing more search and with the help of some falks from #Android @ EFNET, we came to the conclusion that its an issue with the EMMC chip just like the first generation of Note 2 and S3.
What's pissing me off is that Samsung fixed the issue on Note 2 with a new patch of phones, so newer phones didnt have the EMMC issue as far as i can tell. SO why the hell would they still use it for the S4 is beyond me.
Just a word of advice, if this happens to anyone, make sure you run a backup as soon as it boots back up the first time.
In my case, it booted 3 times by removing the battery and putting it back and froze 3 times, there was no 4th.
If i tried to backup the phone the first or second time it booted, i could still have my data to be restored on the new repaired phone.
This should be marked as closed unless some other people with the same issue want to discuss it here.
hi all,
since a day i have an extremely annoying issue with the note3 (sm-9005)
first, when it boots - it takes ca.10 minutes. stuck on the samsung animated logo.
then the black screen appears with the status bar (which i can drag down). normally i should have a lock screen appearing. but it just remains black. and in the status bar i have a message " you can now safely remove sd card" and "tap to enter knox". nothing happens when tapping those two...
can i play back an update from the SD card so that FW renews and i don't have to so factory reset and reinstall everything?
(ps. when connecting phone to a pc it shows no disks inside the phone so that if it still was locked...)
thanks in advance!

well same thing as one would do using kies, only somehow without kies. i saw in the recover boot an option "apply update from external storage" and was wondering what file could i use for that?
i have SWC region on my device...
Answer is no via above.
Firmware update is via Kies or Odin .
Alternative is custom rom via custom recovery .

i guess not much left but factory reset. hopefully these are not corrupt internal storage problems.

Did anyone come up with a solution to this other than findmymobile? I have had the same problem with my Note 3, e.g. taking 5-10 mins to load up from power off, the dreaded black screen with the power / wifi / etc icons shown on the top. My Note 3 was password protected as well, meaning I can't get into it even with Kies. I have the latest stock firmware installed.
I hadn't installed any apps to my phone before it died, however I do recall a security update being installed earlier in the day (this looked like an official Android one).
Any ideas? I went along to a Samsung Service Centre for help and they had told me that they had seen at least 5 cases of this on a Note 3 over the last two days.

I did not receive any response from anyone from anywhere. So I tried on myself and started manipulating every corner. I tried bluetooth and I could backup my contacts. It was the first victory.
I restarted into safemode by holding down the Down Volume for about 10 minutes! I wanted to try calling via pc via bluetooth. Just as a blind try. Meanwhile I saw a Knox notofication I had seen before so I just clicked carelessly. Vow!! The Knox Lock Screen was there blinking behind some error messages. I tried my lock pattern but nothing happended. I tried more and more, I was thinking this may corrupt the LCD! because it was blinking and went on off rapidly.
I saw that a counter is reducing. 20 attempts left.. 19 attempt... I worked hard till 4 or 3 then some message popup saying knox may be uninstalled. I said who cares? and went on. finally knox was uninstalled. I continued manipulating other available corners of the Note 3 and after a while I restarted and vow!! It was like back to life!
I came here writing for those who are out there seeking every corner of the web for a liitle bit of information.
I backed up my stuff and did a factory reset. It seems fine now.
I suggest manipulating every possible sequence of events. It will pop up some error and then the answer may rise!
best wishes
in my case i unlocked it with findmymobile, backed up stuff to SD card and did factory reset without much further thinking.
phone works fine until today
