Improving gps lock time - Galaxy S II General

Gps isn't great on thus device. Better than it was on the Craptivate but worse than a modded captivate.
Can any of the captivate CPA fix Apps work on the S2?

What? My GPS lock is insanely fast. Fastest lock on any phone I have ever owned.
All reviews have shown impressive gps locks when navigating and when using maps

There are a number of GPS posts about fixes dont know mine is perfect .
Only change i make is NTP pool server set to a more local one via Faster Fix .
jje

I am comparing it side by side with my Atrix. Atrix always sees more birds, faster and locks on quicker. In some instances my SGS2 never locks on when Atrix will. Interestingly tried it on a flight and whereas Atrix often got a lock the SGS2 never did.
Also if the device goes off, or screen switches off the SGS2 immediately loses the lock and takes a few seconds to reacquire. Atrix is instant. That's important if u r driving.

I used FasterFix from the market since any SGS2s here in the States have the ntp server set to Europe by default. If you're rooted & have BusyBox, you can quickly change it to the North America server using that app. There is also a way you can manually change a config file to achieve the same, but you'll have to search for instructions on how to do that as I'm not familiar.
After changing the server, my GPS locks up extremely fast.

note that apps have to keep gps awake if you don't want it to turn off on screen off.
navigation, my tracks, are for example doing that

How does gps work for you"

My gps is constantly going in and out while using navigation. It drives me crazy. I had better lock on my hero.

I have used it twice for about 30 minutes each time and it worked fine both times. Once I was on a speaker call for part of the time as well, about 5 minutes.

Make sure you have Use Wireless networks and Use GPS satellites in the options menu checked. If not, it will cause the phone to strictly rely on the wireless network which will cause crappy perfomance.
Gps sucks on these phones its a known issue

Download "GPS Status and Toolbox" from the Market, and keep your GPS cache/data cleared and reset every so often. Works wonders.
i use mine everyday (not so much for navigation but traffic data). works perfectly. there are times when it takes a while to get gps connection, but that's an exception, not the rule.
Ive had my shift for a little over a month. I quickly stopped relying on it for GPS directions but have enabled it for wifi mapping and other location infomation.

Was this by choice or because the gps was giving you problems. I have a shift and a evo and the shift is only a few seconds behind on getting a lock.

Mostly by choice. even though i live in the flattest part of Illinois it takes a little too long to connect. usually its time sensitive and i would rather just call for directions. still relevant to thread imo.
Side note: Yes, i've tried root/nonroot app solutions to speed it up, personally i'd rather call if the lock takes ~1min to connect.
My gps locks just fine within a few seconds; I'd say 10 seconds at the most. It's holding the signal that is the problem. And yes I've tried resetting agps data with gps tools and ##gpsclrx# to no avail. Took it back to radio shack, they tried a data profile and factory reset, and said if it doesn't work they will exchange it tomorrow. Of course it was no better. So I'll get to see if another phone is better tomorrow.
Mine works fine except on the military base I work on...then its sporadic lol

After more testing. Mine is working but a little wonky sometimes. I notice after a long wait it may take 30 seconds before locking. My Evo was instant even on cold start. Could they have put a cheaper gps radio to save money or could this just be a simple software fix.
I have serious GPS problems with this phone. When I first bought the Evo Shift 4G I thought it was defective hardware so I returned the phone for a replacement. My second Evo Shift 4G shows the same behavior. I don't know how they could have released the phone considering this major shortcoming. I had a Hero before this and its GPS worked pretty well. The Evo Shift 4G takes forever to get a lock, sometimes several minutes. I will not work for me indoors, even if I am on my porch. It is practically useless and I cannot depend on it at all, this makes many many features and applications I have come to love on Android practically useless. You don't realize how valuable location aware apps are until you can't use them I am debating if I should return the phone again and get a samsung epic, or if I should hope that they release a fix for this issues very soon. I don't know if it is something that could be fixed with an update though -- perhaps it is a hardware issues exclusively. I am very bummed because this phone is pretty fantastic otherwise.

The GPS on the Epic is fairly broken.
I did another test this morning and the gps would just drop signal for 10 minutes at a time. I would have to get out of Google navigation and go back in to get a lock. If this keeps up, I think I will go back to the EVO. I'll give it the 30 days first though. I love the phone otherwise. I am very dependent on gps and that really is a deal breaker. Maybe if this gets some attention it will get on the front page of a big site and HTC will realize its a problem.
I'm on CM7, so no GPS here .
If you are using Google Nav, it will suck.. using the Tel Nav that came with the phone is better . Maybe its also due to Google Nav since it is still in Beta....

I am hoping that any GPS problems will be worked out soon. I am wanting to upgrade two launch month Pres to EVO Shifts, and one of the main problems with our Pres is the GPS. My Pre constantly requires a restart before the Navigation will work correctly. My girlfriend's Pre has never worked well or consistantly.
Agreed. The GPS on this phone is jacked up. I just got back from a trip to California and the GPS goes in and out...WTF! I was driving through the desert with nothing blocking the signal.
It worked again for about 5-10 mins whenever i restarted the nav program then it goes in and out agian.
The EVO was great however, worked in two seconds.

Nexus S and Satellite Navigation / Google Navigation

I'm interested to know everyone's experiences of navigation on the Nexus S.
My experiences are that Google Navigation on the Nexus ONE was faultless. On the Nexus S though I have the following issues:
Weak GPS lock. Either loses satellites completely or not accurate enough at busy junctions where the device may put me on the wrong road, exit etc.
Secondly, the Navigation app freezes completely regularly enough to be a pain.
Third, the GPS fix seems to be impaired when the phone is in a cradle (powered).
This is a real deal breaker for me as I do travel for work and don't want to revert to Tomtom.
So, is this the general experience? Or is my device faulty?
Thanks in advance.

i have had some ****ty experience with the S.... HOWEVER... after this 2.3.3 i am seeing much better/faster GPS lock, and it is on par with the GPS from my old Nexus One... i am even able to get a stable GPS lock indoor at floor 4 in a 6 story building... so i am very impressed with the 2.3.3 update.

Same for me. I have not updated to 2.3.3 so i can't tell if the issue has improved.
I have used the nav about 7-8 times and its been perfect for me with no faults. I'm in south Florida. Not sure if my location matters

I've been using Navigation while mounted in my car every day since launch day. It has never frozen up and has dropped the sat lock maybe twice.
There were a few days where it could not download a route for any destination, but I was flashing CM7 Nightlies + gapps on a daily basis without wiping. A wipe before the next flash fixed it.
Otherwise flawless.

Same here except I'm in central FL. I've used CM alpha builds and currently using Gcollab builds. Never had an issue. Once it's locked, it's locked.
I've always used navigation on my nexus one and when I used with the S I was disappointed. It use to took even 10 mins to get a gps lock if I got one at all.
But after 2.3.3 update everything turned around, now I get a full lock with 10 sats in seconds and the navigation it's smooths and flawless.
Aside the weird colors, there's not one bad change after I updated to 2.3.3

I constantly use my Google Navigate in Anchorage, Alaska and so far it has been nothing short of perfect. Although, any city in Alaska is probably way more simple than a larger city in the lower US.
However, there was one time it told me to take a right turn onto a one-way street, and then it proceeded to tell me to go in circles and my destination will be on the left. Weird.
Only happened once, never happened again.
GPS locks happen incredibly quickly, and I have never lost a lock.
Using CM7 RC1.
I had same GPS issues. I haven't really used much on 2.3.3 yet but it does seems a little better.
I've found the Nexus S to be quite slow to get a GPS lock.
I sat the Nexus S side by side with my old HTC Hero near a window and the Hero got a lock quickly and Nexus S didn't get one at all.
Tried the Nexus S in the car today and it did get a lock but slowly.
Running Stock 2.3.3 Rooted
I use nav almost every weekday and on the days I use it, I use it a lot. Getting a lock on isnt typically an issue. Sometimes it lags, usually it seems like its fast enough. My biggest gripe is that the onscreen position usually lags around 30-50ft behind my actual position on the road.
Also, this doesnt happen often (but regularly enough to be irritating) I will be driving on a route and all of a sudden the navi will think my position is on some other road and will re-route me. Very annoying!!!
My N1 had perfect nav. What sucked about it was the screen was not big enough, too dim and generally sluggish when moving maps around. The NS corrects all those things but now the nav is kinda sucky
7/8 visible satellites locked, indoors, with 10m accuracy, with wifi off in less than 15 seconds here just now. This was with the GPS Status app. I did notice it downloaded almanac data over 3G as soon as I started it up, so that's a bit of an assist for a lock from just a cold start.
GPS never been much of an issue on the Nexus S for me. The Galaxy S i9000 and Vibrant, that's another story.
I also have never had a problem with the GPS. I use it regularly for work and have never encountered any of the things mentioned. Could be an area issue?
I wish it was an area issue... but never had a problem with my N1
My Nexus S running the 2.3.3 OS takes very long to get a GPS lock, and at times I would reach my destination before it even get a fix.
I wonder if my phone is at fault here or some kind of bug.
I am thinking of calling the tech support to see if they can offer some help.
mine works immediately as i turn on the car, in all kind of nasty weather
99.999999999% accurate
Wonder if getting a Bluetooth GPS reciever would help

Using a Nexus S with Android 2.3.3:
my GPS does get a fix but loses the fix quite often! Compared to my old htc tattoo phone, the gps on my nexus s is not working well.
While navigating in my car, the htc never loses the gps fix while the gps of my nexus goes on and off... :-( The weird thing is that both phones have almost identical signal-to-noise ratios (per satellite) but the nexus simply does not get a fix while the htc has no problems...
I have to say, I am really disappointed regarding the gps performance of the nexus s!
sorry to hear that guys,
maybe I'm a bit more lucky in this but I'm very happy with the navigation on my SNS.
I have recently upgraded my i9020 to 2.3.3 stock rom (was running stock 2.3.1 also without any problems) and my navigation works perfect. I'm even surprised about the accuracy of this device. This one brings me up to a few meters accurate to required destination. I didn't belive this myself as phone nav cannot realy compare with the "real" TomTom's or Garmins.
Actually, the whole phone works perfect (wifi and 3G as wel) and hopefully I will keep it this way.
greetz
BTW. Since GPS problems on my previous phone (i5800 Galaxy3) I use a GPS Booster Lite from Octy. Maybe this is the trick. I'd say, try it, dosn't cost anything.
Nexus S 2.3.2 here
Whenever I enter downtown Houston, my nav completely fails, no GPS, nada
and it's terribly frustrating because I hate navigating downtown Houston
I may just go 2.3.3 to see if it's better... won't hold my breath

GPS is similar to my GPS on my captivate BEFORE I flashed a modded ROM. Side by side with my Atrix it continually underperforns. It is slower to see satellites, sees fewer and has this awful power issue in that if I switch apps it switches off the GPS so has to reaquire and has a delay. I'm dissappointrd about it.

Good to know! The gsmarena guys reported that the Atrix catches the sats quicker(<1min) - however it's not clear it A-gps was active or not. In case of SGS2 they tested AGPS OFF, and still got reasonable fix time and accuracy.

GPS lock

Cannot seem to get a gps lock at all on my device. Possible issues.. Fault product and needs replacing?
Any ideas please.

Must be faulty. My N7 has the best GPS of any Android device I have used. After a dismal experience with multiple Android phones, I held my breath as I walked out my door and fired up GPS Test for the first time. I got 10 sats locked almost instantly. 10-12 sats is the usual standing outside, and the thing tracks great lying on the console in the car between the two front seats, whereas most of my other devices tracked poorly or not at all unless they were on the dashboard under the windshield.
GPS on this thing is pretty fast, it's locked in 2 or 3 sec.
instant lock here in my home... But until you move around a bit Say drive down the street google maps is off.it shows me in the back bedrooms in my neighbors house across the road.. a few houndred feet away . once i drive to end of street it finds me spot on until i turn it off and on again .
question thou..
ARE YOU STOCK?
if not what rom?
have you asked in the rom developers thread about this issue ?
you can try gps status tool from the market.
go into settings and reset .. then re download data. do this outside with clear line of sight ..
Probably defect but it could be because you're using a custom ROM?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
If you are rooted, install a program from play store called faster fix.
Use this to set the region you are in and that will speed up the GPS lock.
If you flash a custom rom you should run this, even after a basic rom update as the update resets the gps config .

AT&T Note 3 GPS Navigation Issues

First off, the phone I was using before I got the Note 3 was the original AT&T Galaxy Note, so my expectations for the Note 3 were pretty high. When I used the Google Nav app on the OG Note, I really liked how reliable it was and the many options it had like picking routes without tolls for example (my favorite :good. The only gripes I had about the OG Note was that occasionally, it would take over a minute or two to get a GPS signal. But once it did, it worked like a champ!
So now we move on to the Note 3.
The first thing I noticed was that there was no dedicated app for Google Navigation. I looked on the Google Play store and I didn't find it there either. So when I checked Google Map app, I saw that that was the only way I could access the navigation feature. Personally, I'm not a fan of Google deciding to merge to two apps together, but I guess in the long run, it'll make sense over time.
Now, another issue I noticed when I first used the navigation feature was the HUGE lack of options navigation is missing. Like I said previously, the OG Note had a lot of features and options that let you tweak how you wanted to set your routes. But the Note 3's navigation 'options' are almost bare-bones! On the settings tab on the lower left hand side, the options you have are things like Google location settings, distance units, and maps history; So I'm like "what the hell?!" So then, when I set my route, I try to see if the options are imbedded in the GPS map screen when you start to use the GPS nav, but.... there's only 4 options (route preview, step-by-step list, mute voice guidance, and satellite view :crying. What the hell happened to the other options?! Is there some way to get to the other options that I'm not aware of? I really hope so.
Now, as I start to drive to the destination I had set for my route, I notice even MORE issues. First thing I notice to my dismay is that the GPS voice sounds... off (and that's putting it nicely). It just sounds muffled and to me, it seems like the voice doesn't finish the end of the words properly - kind of off putting, IMO. Also, I noticed that when I stopped my vehicle, the little blue triangle that indicates your position on the map tends to move slightly more forward before it completely stops movement. Also, I saw that while at a complete stop, the map starts to go in circles, leading one to believe that the routes changed on the fly (I can see this as a problem if one were to look away from the screen for a bit, and then once you move, the map fixes it's direction again, and that could lead to some confusion while you're trying to momentarily figure out what happened).
So there you have it. That's my experience with the Note 3's newer version of Google Maps. Perhaps It's my phone that's having issues with it's GPS functions. So I'd like to know from others here if they're having similar issues with their navigation.
thats actually google's doing, you'll find that on all new versions of the os
Indeed, like tom said above, this is google's updated version of maps that happened months ago. Consider yourself lucky that you never updated it on your older Note. There's been many complaints about them stripping out features that were once in the older version of maps. In my note 2, I at least had an option to uninstall the update after I tried it out but since our Note 3 came with the newer version preinstalled, there is no older version to revert back to.
Once I feel comfortable with our root options, i'll sideload the old apk back in.
The one thing that is Samsung's issue that you mentioned was the voice. For some reason or another, Samsung stripped out Google's default TTS engine. I really have no idea what the reasoning behind this is, but.. there you have it. You're stuck with Samsung's TTS engine or some other third party one in the market.
Got spoiled with Note 1 and 2. Exchanged my Note 3 after comparing GPS with Tmo and AT&T showroom displays. Replacement is better but not spot on accurate as 1&2.
New one has sloppy home button tho

I used the GPS 3 times today on the Note 3 and had no issues. I actually like the new Google Maps, it seems like more accurate than before.
It has nothing to do with the note. Update your old phones apps and SURPRISEEEE!!! You have the new app. I highly doubt your arrow is spinning if it is restart your phone. Your compass needs to calibrate, move your phone in a figure 8 pattern. You're nitpicking and have no reason to blame the note. HTC Motorola and everyone else has your same "problems". Get over it. You want another route option right after you enter your destination the options are right there. You're not accepting of change. Yea the maps app is new just live with it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
yeah. i like the old google map better, it also ask you what navigation app you want to you. so you can use your favorite navigation app.
i tried the new google map, it' useable, it' not that bad.
if you want to use your favorite navigation app, just install a older version of google map and dont update it.

my note 3 is having an issue also - the arrow to indicate the position you are traveling is pointed about 15 degrees clockwise... i am going to keep checking and hopefully it gets better.
First thing, the "two apps" were always the same. There were just two launchers. And if you want the old launcher back, the intent is still there. Just create it. Super simple if you're using Nova, just create shortcut->all->maps->navigator.
And yes, going through the "Maps" application is a lot more taps, it's actually pretty silly. They've made it a little better in the most recent version but it's still 3-4 taps, and I've heard navigating to Contacts is worse too but I haven't done that recently.
Google Now still works I guess, as long as it recognizes the destination

Hi Guys,
I had the same problem with my phone as well. Found an upgrade to 7.3 and it seems to have fixed the 30 degree offset problem. I tried Waze buy prefer Google maps. 7.3 is available.
Not sure where I found it but I do have the apk file. Would be glad to send it anyone who wants it.
Update: The 30 degree problem has returned. I have tried several GPS programs and all of them that give heading information eventually show the offset of the heading. Phone will be exchanged today as I can't determine if it is hardware or software. Also, the compass continues to be off as well when it receives GPS info.

I really enjoy how my Note 3 navigates. I'm from Omaha and have been using it to get around Kansas City (which I'm really not familiar with) all weekend. The only thing I wish it had is a history so I wouldn't have to keep lookng up my hotel every time I want to return there. Other than that, it's been working flawlessly.
