How to make this tablet even better - Acer Iconia A500

Hello every one
Finally my tablet will be arrive tomorrow morning and i am so happy and excited to be an iconia user by joining this community
But How to make this tablet even better by upgrading it .
P.S. (i am not an expert in android stuff yet )

I can't see a lot that needs to be done to it.
Maybe a screen protector if you want, a bluetooth keyboard, a case or bag to protect it.
And a 8 or 16G class 6 MicroSD card.

If yours is anything like mine, a way yo make the screen sharp and not blurry. Some glue for the glass. Mine has been coming off since I got it, I'm returning this one, it is awful, can't be live my glass if loosening and the screen is blurry.

The only true way to improve this tablet:
Root and bootloader unlocked, then it can be overclocked and totally personalized/improved by the devs here at xda, (xoom and transformer already overclocked and running at a smooth 1.5gh) shhh my £200 advent vega tab beats the iconia hands down on quadrant and smartbench 2011 speed tests!!!

I really wish people would a- provide useful information that the op asked for or b- STFU. Providing a crap answer like this does nothing helpful for the op.

My suggestion. Play with your tablet for a day or two and see what it is like. If you find things that you would like to change on your tablet that need root then you can add the root hack to accomplish them.
Take time to read the threads here and learn how to do things before trying them and before asking questions that have already been asked. There is a wealth of information here that can easily be found by reading.
Good luck with your new toy and enjoy it.

Yeah I see what you mean.
Silly me to think that a faster, smoother, recoverable, personalized, ability to use root req apps would improve the Iconia. LOL
No really. You honestly believe this would not improve the Iconia? That is totally weird.

Here is my last reply to you. The OP is new to this tablet. He is asking what he can do to this to make it work nicely for him/her. Can he unlock the bootloader? No. Can he replace the Kernel? No. Just because you want this stuff, and by the way quadrant benchmarks are crap, doesn't mean the op does. Provide some good info that can actually be accomplished. There are a bunch of other threads that you can spam and whine about not being able to do what you want.

Yeah, sure:
" Advent Vega with its Tegra 2 innards and £199 ($326) asking price. You may take issue with its outdated OS, but thankfully a couple of hackers have replaced the Vega's antiquated Android 2.2 with a heaping helping of Honeycomb. It's currently an alpha release, so while widgets and apps are working well, camera capabilities, screen rotation, web-surfing on WiFi, and most everything else is currently off limits. There's still plenty of work to be done"

Hi Fluffbutt,
As my signature below, I currently have this honeycomb on the vega. And wifi internet is sweeeeet btw.
But please note this is not about the vega, I just use it as reference that it is faster in smartbench 2011
I cannot wait to see what the Iconia will be able to do, and how much faster and smoother the user experience will be when it gets opened up as it should be unlocked and kernel source supplied (android not apple anyone?) and the superb devs here get to work on it.

enjoy
Just my two pennies.Try using it for a few days or so without putting much on it.from the complaints in the forums about a few of the issues I do really wonder if there are some really rouge not quite ready for honeycomb apps out there.so with that said testing apps is a must
Never install more then one at a time
Run each forbanday or so tobsee how its effecting your tab
Then if you have a big issue you will know the app causing it most likely
Enjoy your new tablet.its not as much fun and useful as a new pair of heels and matching skirt. But my tab Rocks

Last attempt at a positive thread?

I'm waiting for my N1 to be delivered.
Is it me or is there a plethora of worrying issues with the N1? Reading through various forums there seems to be issues with nearly all aspects of it from screens clicking to poor performance and software quirks. I can't seem to find any more positive threads and its starting to freak me out.
How does the N1 really compare to the iPhone/comparative-phone as a complete product? Both hardware and software quality.
Honesty would be much appreciated.
Most of the hardware issues should be resolved, you should not see dust, nor clicking screen etc. Software patch is said to be coming this week or so, and should resolve most of the glaring launch issues with 2.1.
As for comparison, I think you'll find a lot of former iPhone and now happy N1 users, the hardware is VASTLY superior currently, and I've never really seen a performance issue regarding the N1, its seriously wicked fast.
Theres worry
Then theres those who have their phone. They dont come on the forums much anymore like myself cus I'm too busy playing with my phone
People with issues are much more vocal than those without.
I have had none, not one, nada, nix, zero of the issues that have been brought to the fore in here.
I must be extremely lucky or the problems aren't that prevalent and, as I've said, the few are more vocal.
SC
I've had my phone since day one and it has worked better than I would have thought, specially because of all the complaints. Don't pay too much attention to them, the phone is awesome and will only get better!
I too lucked out, other than a few screen calibration re boot issues mine is running perfect! Love this baby. And the screen and speed can't be beat! Well worth the 500 some odd bucks. I paid!
hope to order mine by the end of the week and i have felt the same way you have regarding the negativity but that still hasn't made me have second thoughts at all about getting this phone, just the "i hope this doesnt happen to me" in the back of my mind. definitly agree with others that people are a lot more vocal on negative issues and i'm sure when i get my phone i wont be refreshing the general forum 600 times a day like i am now
This phone is awesome.
You really owe it to the N1 to flash a custom ROM though. Get over to Modaco, flash the ROM with Highmem and JIT enabled... it quadriples available memory and double's stock CPU speed! I lie not!
At some point I'll upload screenies of my Linpack results before and after custom ROM flashes.

I received my N1 the day after announcement and I've been very happy with the purchase. Solid device without any of the common issues.
If there's one thing to put your mind at ease is that on topical forums the loudest voice is usually the one that requires assistance or advice. A member that has no issues will likely remain a lurker. It's a very false impression of the landscape. Google sold somewhere around 20,000 N1s in the first week so consider the ratio of problem handsets to working handsets and how often someone will start a new thread just to say nothing is wrong. It rarely happens.
I still don't believe that figure of 20,000 anyway. I think it was much higher. That is based on apps that were sold in the first week... an odd way to try and figure how many units where shifted, but Google wont release any figures I don't think.
I love my N1 and have no problems with it, even with it being rooted with a experimental ROM.

Yea, I've been the same. Worried. After all this negative feed back, well the only thing really irritating me is the dust thing. Is it yet fixed on newer phones? Other than that, these other problems don't seem.. important.
I replaced two iPhone 3G's with N1's.
Wife took the first one I ordered and she's a diehard Mac fan, and ever since discovering DoubleTwist on the Mac and as an Andriod app she's very happy.
My phones are all stock (even though I'd like to root 'em), for now
Waited a long time for a powerful fast customizable device like this! It easily replaced my 2 WM PPC's.

Why does everything have to be compared to the iphone?
Read the specs for the iphone, then the N1 and search youtube. Not too hard right?
Or maybe search the forum and read the other 1,000 post that are the same as yours?

Bye Bye TF!

Yeah... so I got the Galaxy Tab 10.1 this weekend to try it out and boy has life been good. This thing is build like a tank and weights like a feather. The screen is flawless (no dead pixels, light bleed, etc.). The only drawback I see with it is the lack of Google Labs (i.e., no Quick Controls or ability to change the User Agent on the default Browser), which can be averted by using a third-party browser if need be. The lack of ports is really not an issue as I plan on using my tablet as a tablet, and not a failed attempt of a laptop replacement. That being said, I'll have to get used to not having the dock, which I know I will (used the iPad since release date). Bottom line, this is a tablet; I already have a laptop (M11x) for anything more serious.
I was just waiting for a root to come out to officially jump ship. Now that it is rooted, I really see no use in sticking around with the TF.
I tried loving it, and maybe, for a split-second, I did. But the fact of the matter is that I feel like I'm going to break it every time I use it and I highly doubt it will last me a whole year. Didn't have this worry with the iPad, and now I don't with the GT.
Later guys! It's been fun!
Riveting.
10.
no.. please dont go...
dont gooooooooooooooooo.
Glad you got sorted out.
are we supposed to care?
Well Buh Bye!
If the Thrive turns out to be solid, I'll likely be jumping to it, but I won't be posting a goodbye thread Maybe a Thrive vs TF thread.
no lose he is only a PATS fan................
i still cant quite understand why someone starts a thread just to say they have decided they prefer another item ..... utterly, utterly pointles .....
i also cant believe ive posted on the subject tho !
Im sure at some stage i will upgrade from my TF, but not for quite some time. And when I do i promise i wont bother telling everyone.
I really wish the mods would just zap these threads. They clog up the forums for everyone trying to get help or actually discuss the TF.
For those who think the grass is greener just go ! dont bother telling us just go. really.
bye...who cares? can mod please ban these types of posts?

you can fix that by installing the transfomer apk or the xoom's browser apk. i think the xoom apk would be better as you'd have more ua strings to choose from.
but i may be with you and jumping ship too. but i really do like the tf i'm still trying to talk myself out of keeping them both. i think i'm stalling myself so that i pass the 14 day returns and am forced to keep both, lol.

Unless you have money to spare, or the need, there's really no reason to have two 10.1 tablets. A 10.1" and 7" package might be better.

Updates are fewer because the issues are fewer. How many updates has it been now and the dock still drains like crazy and the battery info is still not available?! Also, no firmware/OTA update can fix the horrible build quality the TF has.
BTW, sarcasm is the ultimate form of insecurity. I'll accept some of your remarks as confirmation that you feel the same way.

I have the 10.1. Theres some more issues with the 10.1 then just the quick tab. One thing is that the default browser screw up your bookmark. I bookmark asus xda and samsung xda. After about 5 mins I click on the Asus TF xda forum it re direct me to the Samsung 10.1 forum. The charger on the 10.1 sucks...its takes forever to get a full charge. 60% in 3 hours....
The screen is nice, if you are into that cartoon look. Way oversaturated for me!!!! When watching a movie everyone in the movie looks like oompa loompa from charlie and the chocolate factory.... So the question is Samsung updates....Are they going to do the same thing with the 10.1 like the way they handle their phones? We just dont know

Soon to be owner

Hello Everybody, I am new to this forum, but not XDA. I am soon to be buying a Eee Pad Transformer, but there is one major setback. I love my brother's xoom. It's amazing, fast, smooth, and all functions work. The one thing I've seen is how the Transformer doesn't look like the Xoom (so I'm led to believe it's dotted with ASUS's own software, while still running Honeycomb). Is there an easy fix for this? I've looked at the custom roms and can't find one that looks to be almost exactly like the Xoom. But I am a N3wb when it comes to Tablets, so I would really like some details on what to expect, from several people on performance, and preferably pro's and con's.
Thanks IA

All Honeycomb tablets at this time (with the exception of Galaxy Tab 10.1) are running stock Honeycomb. Some tablets may add apps of their own but it is not really bloatware.
If you're talking about the buttons on the bottom left there is a easy fix for that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1120014&highlight=Xoom

Umm.. you could flash a kernel and ROM afterwards?
Development is very limited as Honeycomb is closed-source.
Out of the box experience is amazing on Honeycomb though.

Just FYI, I had a Xoom before I got my Transformer. I am _much_ happier with my Transformer, both in terms of the screen (a huge improvement) and how Asus is supporting the device. Of course, the keyboard dock is a huge plus that nobody else can match...
Not knocking the Xoom, but rather to say that you won't likely regret your decision between them.

ICS already on Xoom! Why don't we have it yet???

Check it out! Forward to 12:00 to see it in action
This has already been posted twice... and the most obvious answer is that it isn't ready yet. Just because you see ICS running and one feature demonstrated doesn't mean the entire thing is ready yet.
Nice to see it running on a Xoom...
Surprised we don't have a leaked beta version of ICS for Xoom.
I'd rather wait for a proper version from the Tiamat guys than have a half working leaked version.

Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for the Tiamat ROM, I just would love to see some in depth ICS videos or be able to play around with it myself on the Xoom. Just to get a taste, even if it is an early build
I ain't trippin' 'bout waitin' for this update. My XOOM runs as I expected it to back in February (and it's about time, too.) The only things that ICS offers that I care about are resizeable Widgets (I hope they mean it this time) and the ability to take screenshots and hide apps without root access.
I can get almost everything done on my XOOM that I planned to do when I bought it. It will be nice to have as long as they don't screw it up. I don't care if it comes.

If you want a taste of ICS, then DL the latest version of ADW Launcher EX. It is just like the ICS launcher (from what I've seen) and it takes a bit of getting used to. A bit too easy to create folders IMO as you move app icons around. Resizable widgets, of course (not new for ADW). Lots of customizations possible.

Scrollable widgets kinda suck on ADW launcher EX on my xoom. It's hard to flick and scroll my gmail widget. It's worse when I set gestures to open/close the dock. Everytime I try to scroll widgets up or down, the dock opens or close and I can't even scroll the widget properly.
Not everyone has the time or will to dig through the thread list to check whether or not a particular topic has been discussed already before starting a new thread on the same topic. Besides, let the mods moderate reposts of essentially the same topic. That is why they exist, after all (among many other responsibilities, of course)!
With that out of the way, I share in the OP's eagerness for an ICS port and find it a bit disconcerting that there's no port for my tablet the Xoom, of course nor my phone, the T-Mob GSII. I applaud the devs who are currently toiling away to bring ICS to the Xoom and would definitely buy one of them a round of beer for their hard work with the only catch being since I don't have Paypal (long story) they'd have to be in the NYC area

Motorola already confirmed it will come, just give them time. Those things don't happen overnight, as they have to take the source code, add the hardware drivers (different interface with the kernel than previous versions), add their branded software, and then test everything to ensure it works. It will come, both from the community AND Motorola.

I agree. When Motorola puts out their update, it will be even easier for xda development to make something nice. I am not going to get on people who aren't getting anything out of it. I don't expect free stuff just because someone is working on it anyway.

When I made my initial post about the OP posting this when it was already mentioned twice, both threads where the ICS video were posted were on page 1. Wasn't a lot of searching to be done to see them... I can understand if a related thread is deep or a few pages away, but page one reeks of laziness.

I think everyone here knows "how to post." You hit the reply, quote, or new thread button. Pretty simple. What you post is a different story. The rules are there for a reason.
As for the other stuff in your reply, I have no clue as to what you were trying to say, but one thing I do know, is that I will never suck as bad as you....

I agree.

I will poach elephants and club baby seals for ICS on my Xoom before Christmas. Any big game hunters interested, just get in touch.
Oh wait, we're talking about posting on forums
looks like they got the nexus s one ready as ics is available for download on that device. I'd imagine the xoom isn't that far down the line seeing how everyone who works at google owns one.
Are we FINALLY going to be able to WRITE to our SD Cards like EVERY other Android Tablet out there? This whole GED BULL**** has really held back Our Xoom's to there full potential. GED has been a Big Headache and WORTHLESS. It has NOT given us any cool stuff over other Android Tablets. I believe GED has hindered our devices. This will be the LAST GED device I buy as it does NOTHING Special.

[Bounty] I.C.S. Lets get it going!!!!

Ok, well we all know our beloved I.C.S./CM9 is out and the first dev/dev's to post a fully working rom that's stable will get the bounty. Must be gpl compliant. Must be fully working and up to xda standards. This is to make devs more willing to dev the A500....incentive works best. This is for ICS/CM9
Pledge: 20 dollars
Total=$290
1. Jvillejoe 20$
2. Icedcube 10$-For a501 with working 3g
3. skatin707 125$
4. toastthemost $10 - With a guide.

6. Tapek-AU $50-For a501
7. chasmanian $20
8. hardslog $30

10. carpenterethan $5
And boob pic's and 1000 doll hairs lol
Count me in. I'll donate beer money for one beer - make it $10 USD.
AFAIK the biggest problem with ICS on A500 is the drivers, I do not know if you could e.g. take Transformer drivers and apply them. In theory it should work as the H/W is mostly the same.
As for pledges.. I do not have money. I can pledge a boobshot, though? NB. I do not promise it'll be my boobs in it, though...
You mean ICS for a500 is out? Where did you get that information from?
... Or you pledge for a a200 port?
As for pledges.. I do not have money. I can pledge a boobshot,
OUCH ... NO WAY I WILL LET ANYONE GIVE ME A SHOT IN MY BOOBS.. That would Hurt.... oucheeeeeee...
but yes ics need correct drives only acer can produce them as they make the camera hardware... from what i remember..

Well that if fine with me.. YOU CAN CHANGE THE OIL in my van.. Actually i can be very girly.. But i have a career in a super man environment . I went school for Construction management.. I FOR Years built high rise construction. Doing so very out about my Sexuality. When the guys get to know i was better at my job then most it got easier.. Now i do home remodeling and its VERY Demanding . i would often have to ask for help with things the guys could do easily . But THEY ALSO often called on me for help with things such as building code . I also have training in structural engineering. by the largest steel manufacturers in the us Such as DIETRIC STEEL USG METALS and so on..
Also i have a mcse degrrr. Now i will have to see this soon to support myself as my SHOULDER/ HAND DOCTORS Have made me maximum recovered..This is at a max of 8 lbs lifting no over head use of my left arm (i am left handed).LIFE IS DEPRESSING AT TIMES . TO LOOSE WHAT YOU LOVE as a career.

on topic .. yes i have a comment.. Look for acer drives for a chinon .(spelling is likely wrong) for linux that is the camera acer uses .. its a gateway piece of hardware. from there line of Digital cameras. Not sure they make them no more but did used to under several brand names. as stated above i was a ACER OEM DEALER..
WHEN THEY WERE CALLED A-OPEN.

Pledging a conditional $10 on that it comes with an easy guide to install. Noobs like me need a step-by-step, including those things that are easier or covered in other threads. Thanks to all our devs!!!
Let's just see if Erica keeps her promise lol.

Then, you will stay with HC. Acer presumably won't publish an ICS ROM for the A500/501, blazingwolf gave up, and I don't see any other devs willing and capable to do the huge amount of work Thor and digitex already spend in developing their close to perfect version of an ICS ROM.
Best regards, maris

If it comes to that then yes, I shall. Being able to keep on to one's ideals without compromising them also goes by another name: "having a spine."

Haven't seen anything from Acer saying anything even remotely in that direction. Sounds more like people just being plain impatient. Things do not always happen in the timeframe we want them to happen, it still doesn't mean they don't happen at all.

And good for you, too! I agree 100% with this sentiment, though I do admit to having flashed it a few times to check on progress.

People just don't seem to realise, a company like Acer just can't work like a couple of "hacker" devs working for their own ends. They have to go through a lot of official steps to release a ROM, not the least of which is waiting for Google to approve it once they've built it. People also seem to forget that the Tegra 2 drivers for ICS were only released a week ago...

The devs most likely also have to go through quite a few extra hoops all the time due to company bureaucracy as usually everything, every single step, must be possible to be accountable to someone or something. I obviously do not know how things are at Acer, but if I know anything about these things the devs most likely aren't even allowed to compile stuff locally and are forced to always use the company's own compile-server.
I'm a professional developer by trade, though for Windows apps, not OS's. However, it does give me more than a little insight in to the requirements of a profesisonal development environment. April for an official ICS is optimistic.

Lol do you read this forum? Every contact with Acer seems to get a "yes", just not a "when" for ICS.
