Rip DVD's - Eee Pad Transformer General

Can someone recommend a program to rip/convert DVD's?
If you have, how large are the movie files?

I've been using DVD Catalyst and it works just fine.

Handbrake

I use WinX DVD Ripper Platinum. Got the license for free during one of their promotions.
1GB will cover about 1h40m of content at 1800 kbps video with 160 kbp stereo audio.

Using DVD Catalyst what device should I use. I tried the Motorola Xoom but movie will not play. Am I missing something.
Resolution: 1280x800
Video: 1500 Kbps
Sound: 128 Kbps
Mode: Stereo

has dvd catalyst been updated to reflect the improvement in video play back in honeycomb 3.1?

That's what i use Xoom HQ2 but the DVD Catalyst site has directions on how to find what works best...really it's trial and error starting with the lowest quality that you will find acceptable.

Not yet. I've been working on it, but from what I have seen, I can't see a difference in quality. Some extra options can be enabled, but I am already getting great quality. It might save 100Kbps or so though.

Just use one of the Xoom profiles, and it should work just fine. However, if you changed some settings, or are trying to convert things like Digital Copy video files, you might run into complications.
Please have a look in the Android section on my website. If you can't find anything there that might help you, let me know what you are actually trying to convert.
Without knowing that, the only suggestion I can offer is to update to the beta. Information on how to do that is also listed on the website.

Handbrake always causes my computer to crash.
I bought DVD Catalyst today after reading this thread and have already ripped several movies quickly and easily. Took a minute to install, zero time to figure out how to use it, cost only 10 bucks and ripped a movie in no time http://www.tools4movies.com/

And I bought it using my paypal. That's always a huge plus for me.

High profile h.264 is more computationally intensive to encode and decode, but theoretically saves on file size for the same quality.
Is your product actually upscaling the 480p DVD source to 1280x800? That seems like an incredible waste of space.

The quality also depends greatly on the source. With DVDs as a source it might shave off 100 MB or so, which is something that in my opinion doest justify the reduction in speed and possible performance issues on the device itself.
While DVD Cat has the capability to upscale video, it actually keeps the original resolution of the video by default if the selected resolution in the device profile is higher. Having the upscaling done by the video player is much more efficient.

I agree with you on both accounts.
High profile savings are of much more benefit with large frame sizes (720p and up) where the hit in encoding time is offset by that reduction in file size.
...
Earlier in the thread it seemed to me that someone had implied that your software was upscaling the video. I was getting ready to launch into a diatribe on the futility and ludicrousness of such a choice.
sassafras

it is a question I receive daily. I have numerous posts on the subject on my website as well as in the user guide and faq. The setting to enable upscaling is there, but it is not enabled by default. It only serves a purpose if you really need your videos to have that specific resolution.

Does DVD Catalyst also convert videos? I have a video that it to massive and must have to many fps i suppose because it skips. I tried covering it to a small file to play on my HTC Inspire with Hamster soft but after 3 hours it is only 15% done. I tried to convert it with DVD Catalyst but all it did after an hour was create a file consisting of 0 bytes.

BEST MOVIE CONVERTER OUT THERE!! Guaranteed!

In 2 weeks I've tried it all. 8 converters to be exact. The best one out there worth anyones time is a converter call AVS Video Converter 6.3(not free but reall worth it trust me). It has it all! It's pretty quick compare to the rest, but most importantly pumps out excellent video quality with smooth framerate. There's a few that's faster but most of them has bad famerates, bad quality, or both. Yes bad framerate playing on my super computer. The best settings that work for my TP2 is the following: M4V ipod h264 at 415 bitrate, 24fps, 640X384. Plays smooth looks great can't ask for more!
Converters I Tried: Handbrake 9.3 too slow
Handbrake 9.4 got sound no video?
Iwisoft choppy framerate looks very promising waiting for a newer version
Ultra mobile 3gp not enough settings file comes out to big and to slow
Any Video Converter when it works it very good, freezes to often during conversions plus to slow.
And a few others I don't remember.
Thanks hope I can help.
did you try the free encoder specifically for our phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112
it works well for me, very simple, just pick 800x480 and go. try that and let me know if you still think AVS is way better, then i'll give it a shot
Handbrake 0.9.4 works fine. You just need to use "MPEG-4 (FFmpeg)" and not "H.264 (x264)" as the phone does't natively support X264
Personally I like mediacoder.
The phone DOES support x264. My current settings on MediaCoder (free by the way) are x264 baseline profile, level 4.1 using 1183kbps and 800x448 resolution. The audio is AAC mpeg4 at 128kbps. I haven't had a chance to find the perfect settings but at those settings it provides me with great looking video and only very occasional stutter (the stutter happens in the same place and it isn't necessarily a high action sequence so I am not sure as to the cause, but in a nearly 5 minute video it stutters once, maybe twice, so it's not that bad).
I don't like the encoder specifically made for our phones because it doesn't offer a high enough bitrate and the end result is a blurry picture if you have higher resolutions and not the neat defined lines one wants with higher res. Also I had tried Super video encoder which I generally like but the downside to it is that at least with me it seems to treat the bitrate chosen as average, resulting in various moments when the phone can't handle it while media coder you can choose between average or constant. Choosing constant means your phone can handle it always or ast least should be able to.
Handbrake didn't work for me for some strange reason. It worked, but barely used my CPU. It would use 1% at most which means it was processing at .1fps and projected the video to be done in 3 or 4 days. I might give it a go sometime. I think I tried AVS but didn't like it because it wouldn't let me set the profile or level for h.264 (there was something about partition which might have been the level setting but it wasn't as precise nor was I sure that that was what it was) and I couldn't find where to choose between baseline, main, and high profile. The best way to get good video on a specific device with limited horsepower is to have each of your settings at the best level. Which is why programs which offer you that level of control are the best ones in these cases.
Though one thing I dislike about MediaCoder always opens up a page. When I chose for it not to do it anymore it still does it. Maybe that option will work for someone else.

i often end up with audio sync issues when i use that. files usually play fine on my computer but are out of sync when played on the device.
i've probably tried around 10 different encoders. so far, for me, the best is dvd catalyst free version. i'm always looking for something free. there is a paid version for $10 with more options. looks good with divx player. doesnt look as good with coreplayer 1.3 for some reason.
i'll probably try playing around with the other encoders again. the files usually play fine on my computer but i almost always end up with the audio out of sync when played on my phone. really frustrating. my settings are probably wrong somewhere.
i use divx converter and use divx mobile to play on my phone.. works good enough for me
I use Mp4forHD, it seems slow but the end result is perfect to me.
I ended up buying DVD Catalyst 3 for $9.99 USD. It takes a while to encode but little to no settings are involved. Very easy, and it even has your device in a drop down menu to ensure that it will play properly on your device. I was able to convert the new Star Trek DVD and playback video quality is very good.

Could you post your preset XML file? I've been playing around with MediaCoder for a few days now and can't get a stutter free result above 480x270.
Also, by encoding at 800 pixels wide, aren't you distorting the original, which is presumably 720 pixels wide?

Interesting no one mentioned Xilisoft video converter ultimate. It allows you to create custom profiles to get the video you want.
Badaboom
Recently I have been using Badaboom. It uses the Nvidia Cuda software on your graphics card. when converting Year One "1 hour and 40 min", took 31 minutes to convert.
Pros:
1) VERY fast
2) no glitching in the movie
3) tells you how big the file will be before you convert it
4) tells you the file size as your adjusting the settings
5) accepts dvds, video_ts folders, and video files
6) smooth black interface with control, but without clutter
Cons:
1) not freeware
2) not effective unless you use a Nvidia card with Cuda
3) only outputs to .mp4 files "coreplayer struggles with, but wmp plays flawlessly"
4) feels like there should be more...but there isn't

if you want the settings/ TP2 picture I used for my setup, send me a PM

+1 on that! CorePlayer plays these with amazing clarity. Also the most easily found and downloadable (ehmm) so never any converting required! But seriously even easier to actually torrent the movie even if you own it. These guys are pros at finding the best settings to produce the best quality at around 650 to 800 mb for your average movie. I have like ten of them on my 16gb card.
On the HTC TP2 the latest CorePlayer must be used for no lag and very little cpu usage. Great mp3 player too.

to the guys who have thanked me for the link to the videora touch pro 2 converter you are very welcomed. also just wanted to let you guys know if you visit their main site which is here : http://www.videora.com/ you can see all the customized converters that they provide. there are plenty more for other HTC devices as well as for gaming devices as well like the wii and ps3 and psp.

Anyone try and encode an HD movie on handbrake ?
I convert a 8gb 720P movie, set the bit rate at 1500...The vid took about 8 hours convert, and ended up being 3gb when done...set at 854x480...I also tried designating the output file size to 1.5gb, still took 8 hours...Been using Handbrake for a while now, quite familiar with the "advanced" settings, but taking so damn long to convert 720p movies. Technically, it's not playing 720p. The 720 refers to horizontal lines of resolution, not the vertical lines. 1280x720 is the resolution of 720p.
The X10 is capable of playing what YouTube and other sites call "480p", which is pretty much what DVDs are encoded at.
this is great guys. thanks alot, im going to try to download handbrake and convert my mpeg movie files
i agree, x10 can play some really HQ files though i find little use of it, a "normal" 350mb episode or 700mb movie will do fine when coverted to .mp4
it's a pitty x10 doesn't have TV-out capability...i had X2 and it worked pretty nicely
is there any way that picture from the x10 could be sent over wireless or am i just talking nonsence maybe an app that would show on your PC the screen which is on X10

This is incorrect. Yes, the X10 is capable of playing 480p, but you make it sound like it can't play anything above that resolution because the screen itself is 480p.
If you play a 720p video on the X10, it will be downscaled to 480p, but the X10 is still decoding the full 720p video which takes quite some horsepower. I used Handbrake to convert a 1080p Youtube trailer to 720p, which the X10 plays, but not without some stutter. Maybe my bitrate setting were a little high and the X10 could play it smoothly on lower encoding settings, but the fact that it plays a perfectly fine quality 720p even with some dropped frames is still pretty impressive.
And no, it's not really usefull to playback any video with a greater resolution that the X10's native screen resolution, but it's fun to play around with IMO. I do wonder if the media player has GPU acceleration. If not, that these results are all the more impressive.

Ripping Movies to EVO

OK, I am retiring my iPod Touch for ripping movies to take with me on trips, to watch either on the phone or with the HDMI output. That said, what resolution should I rip DVD's to so that they look good on the phone and on an HDTV using HDMI output? I read that 1280x720 is 720P, but my test showed that the movie played fine on the phone, but looked like a 4:3 movie when I played it on my HDTV. Any comments/suggestions/experience is greatly appreciated (I *really* want to be rid of my Touch...LOL).

How are you going to rip a DVD to 1280x720p when DVD's native res is 720x480 ntsc and 720x576 pal?
I'd say to rip your dvd's to 720x480 MP4 using Handbrake if you like free solutions or my favourite for-pay dvd ripper of choice is Win X Dvd Ripper. Look them both up.

You can use Daniusoft DVD Ripper. It will put the movie straight to your SD card and you can manually choose the res, fps, and a lot more.
It's really nice.
http://www.daniusoft.com/dvd-ripper.html
I would recommend ether the danusoft or cucusoft DVD rippers. CucuSoft has a vary of options that you can choose from. They go from little nanos to apple TV resolutions. You can of course by their full package but you can always save a buck or 2 by getting the one your need.
Here is a link: http://www.cucusoft.com/download.aspx
Go with Handbrake, an oldie but goodie. Just make sure you encode as MPEG4 and not h.264, as the native video player on the EVO can't handle h.264.
Use most of the default options unless you know what you're doing, or have read through the help page for Handbrake.
Personally, for quality I just shoot for a target size instead of a specific bitrate. For 90-120 minutes of film, 700-800 MB is usually good enough for viewing on the EVO's screen (yes, I've tested).
For Avatar, I set it to 1500 MB as it's a long flick.

Your smoking crack the EVO plays x.264.
Yes and no... evo will play h264's baseline profile, but not main and high profiles
It's still x.264 that's what I'm saying its easy too just select the iphone preset change the width to 800 check keep aspect ratio and change the extension to mp4 for some reason it does a m4v extension.
uh, thanks

Nonetheless, for playing ripped movies on the EVO, I'd still recommend mpeg4 as opposed to h.264, if only because the encoding job is much quicker.

im not sure im new at adding videos to android devices but if you download the software theres a manual in pdf form that explains everything it can do.
I have about 60 DVD's ripped so far using this same program. One thing to note though, The movies are a bit grainy when you do the preset Xoom setting. You might want to go into video settings and up the bitrate to 1750 or so if you really want your movie to look amazing on the Xoom.
Avatar at 1000 bitrate = meh
Avatar at 1750 bitrate = nice
Also you'll probably want to get AnyDVD. It breaks encryption and copy protection so that you can *ahem* backup your disks. It even fixes the disks that try to use false headers and what not to make the movie play out of order when you rip it. I've been using the 21 day trial version myself.
My first try at converting a 720p mkv high profile video is ok. It is not full screen like the youtube video indicates using the Xoom setting. The sound however is much louder compared to using the free handbrake application.
The application itself needs some work on the GUI. It is not very intuitive. Also, when it is running, it causes my computer to not be as responsive. Handbrake does not do that.
This is only my first test so results may vary with other files I try.
if you want better quality next to the xoom preset click modify and you can change the resolution and bitrate from a 1000 to 1750 like the previous post said. if a dvd has 2 versions there will be 2 different movies at the top one is for widescreen and 1 for fullscreen

Grr.. I did a DvD with the default Xoom preset and the file is 1.2 gb and the audio is off(ie: not in sync).... did I just sink 9.95 for a blah ripper?
Hey what's the name of the software for it? Thx

did you click manage next to the xoom preset and and change the bitrate or audio quality? ive burned 10 movies and all have had no problems whatsover
I did not do any dvd ripping but converted 720p mkv files into xoom format using catalyst. Quality was good and the file size dropped from 4.5gb to 1.2. No sync or stuttering issues. Really impressed.
Down side is it took the length of the movie to convert and like one poster said it lags my whole PC down.

I'm using Total Video Converter & it works great..it does just about any format you can think of !

Most common (non-DRM) video files, including MKV and ISOs. Just drag&drop them onto the program. If you drag folders, it will filter out the video files. Some MKVs might give some problems due to either having compressed-headers headers enabled (a recent change in MakeMKV, enable "fixmkv" setting in Global Settings > Advanced), or due to an unsupported (at the moment) audio format (truHD/e-ac3). Depending on the source of your MKV's most work though.

If you test-play your files on your PC, don't use Windows Media Player. WMP has sync-issues with MP4 files. if you use Quicktime or VLC, they will play fine.
As for the PC-slowdown, the conversion to h264 video is quite processor-intensive, and the software uses whatever power it can find. The faster the processor, the faster the conversions. If you use a single-core/cpu system, conversions tend to run at about the same speed as the length of the movie (select the xoom-fast profile to speed it up), but if you have a nice Core i7 Quad or 6-core, you can rip a 2 hour movie in about 20 minutes.

Why not provide an option to lower the priority? It sounds like the application is only usable now if you queue something up to run overnight.

I did notice they played better on the Xoom the WMP. Thanks answering the questions!

It's there
Global Settings (enable "power user" mode) > Conversion > conversion priority.
By default it runs at "Normal" priority.

[Q] Video conversion

Hi,
Can anyone recommend any video conversion software for the nexus 7's 7 inch screen.
There's Mediacoder and hanbrake.
I second Handbrake.
Thanks!
MediaCoder is my favourite. It's really fast and has sooo many options.

I actually like Freemake. http://www.freemake.com/
It's free lol there's presets but you can also customize the resolution.
Can anyone suggest general settings for converting videos? Googling says to use Ipod settings? 1280x800 res? Thanks for any input

Depends on how big a file you want. Id start with 640x360 at 1.5 mbps bitrate and go from there. I find this setting to be good enough quality at a good file size

I tried this MediaCoder. It is ad ridden and very slow. I'd rather just remux with Wild Media Server, it takes a few minutes.
I am using Quick media Converter, and there are roughly 1000 options,
so lets start with something simple:
What codec and output file type (format) should I choose? I am guessing 16:9 aspect ratio?
Thanks!
You'll want to keep the same aspect ratio the video you're converting has. Haven't used Quick media Converter, so can't offer any specific help for it, sorry!
Could be best to try a few different settings with a short video clip to see what works best - saves having to convert a full episode, film or whatever you're converting.
Why bother converting the video file when you can use an app like MX Player that can handle most video formats ?:silly:

MX player is nice for a bit, but I am much more excited for vlc to drop it's beta tags. MX is to buggy and finnicky for my palate.

Suggest Handbrake and start with an iPad preset then adjust as follows:
MP4 container
ACC sound (stereo)
h.264 video codec , level 4.1 or lower. Maybe level 3.x to start to check for compatibility.
Audio
I suggest 128 kbit/sec with some Dynamic range compression (x2) and audio normalization - assuming you are using a movie source
For a 1080p or 720p source I would recommend setting 1280 pixel width, keep aspect ratio, and allow the converter to adjust the (output) height to be correct.
I would suggest 1400 kbit/sec for the video encode and then try higher bit rates if you like as there may be an upper bit rate limit for the hardware decoder on the N7.
Thank you!
That really covers what I was looking for.
Converting my ripped movies will keep me busy until I get my tablet.

I was with you up until the last bit.
Avoid dynamic compression and normalisation, there's really no need.
I took Avatar from a BRD down to 37GB MKV with make MKV then used Handbrake to take that file down to a 3.69GB .MP4 file.
Took about 2 hours to do but the film looks, plays and sounds great on the N7
