Music Beta and WiMAX? - EVO 4G General

My small-sized city was fortunate enough to recently get WiMax, (I'm not sure how long we've had it!) With a speed test I scored a 7142kbps download without being in the "best coverage" area. Impressive!
Everything worked great until I tried to stream music from Google Music beta. All my cloud based music was grayed out and when I'd select a song it said "you have to be connected to the internet to play this." (I'm paraphrasing) As soon as I switched off 4G and went back to 3G everything played fine.
Anyone else have this issue?

Yep just tried it. No go on WIMAX

Thanks for the reply. 4G really isn't needed to stream music anyway but it seems like a hassle to toggle off WiMAX every time I want to listen to music. Maybe Google will fix this soon.

Don't know why we're not seeing the same behavior, but I can stream Music Beta downloads over WiMAX on CM7 nightlies.

Same issue on deck's 2.3.3 (1.0) in LA on wi-max. No google music! So, I guess it's not an ASOP vesus sense thing.

hm. interesting. I got my beta invite two days ago, still uploading music.
so I tried playing some stuff over 4G, and... it sorta worked, stutter city, until it buffered. but it made my phone act Really Weird. unresponsive (even when I had closed the app), restarts, total Sense FC, etc. and yes, I mean ETC. had to totally reboot the phone to get good function back.
that was yesterday, I'll try again today perhaps over 3G only...
(i am on sprint lovers currently...)

OMGB 1.1.2 ROM, aosp here. Seems unlikely it would be a rom issue, no?

I am running 2.3.4 (Deck's latest) and I can stream with no issues on 4g.
.....

When I turn 4G on, I get this error on my EVO: "You must be online to play this song"
Everything else works with 4G on though, web browsing, emails, etc.

I'm still waiting on my invite to install on my pc

I use it every day in the car using 4g, I live in a big city and our 4g coverage is pretty good, works great. Ive used it on stock as well as a few roms.

I'm in San Antonio, and have no issue playing music over a 4G connection. I'm using a stock EVO.

No video playing capability at all...

Today, my daughter asked me to watch a Youtube video in my phone. I opened up the application and found the video she wanted and clicked it...after a few seconds..."Sorry we cant play that video try again" pop up. i tried again and again and again and again to no avail... tried a different video...nothing.
Went to the browser, open Youtube clicked on a video and similar message appeared.."cant play that video"
Went to the market and downloaded the update for Youtube but besides the change of the layout and display, the same results.
Finally I went to Flixter to try and watch a trailer and the same result..."Sorry that video cant be played"
Finally after many and many retries, one video played but when I clicked it again to play, back to same old "sorry cant play video"
I have temporary root and have had it for a while with out any issues. I actually turned my phone off and lost root and tried to watch videos but no success.
I remember having similar issues with my Hero but hadn't had any problems with my Shift until now
Anybody else with this issues? Any fixes? .
Yes I have that issue on 3g. On wifi and 4g it works just fine though. Weird.

I had the same issue after messing with temp root on my shift. After many tries of updating, installing update, going to YouTube website and rebooting phone I couldn't get it to work for the life of me. I finally reset the phone to factory and have not updated my youtube app (shilling the version that shipped on phone) and now I have very high success rate unless I have less than 3 bars of signal then it takes a couple tries but it still plays fine. I hope that helps. Let me know if that helped any.

Check out upload and download speeds in the development forums. I was having these issues too. It seems sprint blocks something in there proxy that prevents streaming media at least some of it

Here's the quick and dirty way to fix streaming. You need your msl. Go to dialer and hit ##3282#
Edit, enter msl, advanced.
Scroll all the way to the bottom. Last four fields make the ports 0 (zero) and other two 0.0.0.0
Reboot and streaming music should work, maybe video too. Something else I do is just download the damned video and watch it if the player is being stubborn. I like jetvd. You might find it in the market but the last time I looked it was gone. Your can Google jetvd android download and look for the URL that is jet's site. I don't remember what it was. They have a download link for the apk. I got it and installed and watch stuff that way when YouTube app is being a *****.
Yea thanx for reminding me, I forgot to mention I tried the proxy address mod for myself and actually caused me to lose all net capability. So from personal experience it didn't work but some users are swearing by the mod. That's another option. Me personally I try not to change settings like that in case down the road it breaks a future app and I forgot what I did etc etc. But its worth a try for the OP.

Same for me. Running stock non rooted.
Same thing is happening on my roomate's Shift. 3G is no go at all, 4G is hit or miss, works sometimes, and I didn't try wifi. aLogcat shows some error with mediaplayer and stagefright. I'll have to look again to remember the exact error/code. His phone is perma rooted, stock ROM and kernel.
I've ruu'd my phone a few times so far. You think that might of fixed any factory flash snafu? I didn't have this problem before ruu either. Sometimes YouTube app is very stubborn.

I haven't tried RUU yet, I dont think it's bothering him enough yet for me to go any further with it. Yes, the youtube app is very stubborn sometimes, as it always has been on my own Evo. However, this is happening (sorry, video cannot be played) whether its on the youtube app, or on youtube.com using the browser. Same results. Very strange.
Take this for what it's worth:
I went into the Sprint store and talked with some of the techs. They said they are aware of this issue with the Shift and the Evo. They say Sprint is working on a fix for this issue.
Lmao like Sprint and Samsung is getting froyo for the epic?

Good heads up on what the techs said. Hopefully its some simple and make the app more reliable considering hats the point of unlimited data I'd I can't even use the factory features. A minor issue but the principle of the fact. So far mine still being pretty consistent with playing videos except when in a weaker signal area.

Setting RTSP parameters to 0 and 0.0.0.0 made Youtube unwatchable over 3G. Setting those parameters back to their defaults fixed the problem.

I really wouldn't put any faith in the sprint techs. Like the poster above said...just look at their track record with releasing an official 2.2 for the epic =\
Sprint communicated to the stores that this is a known issue that will be resolved in future updates.

Throttled while downloading...???

So in the past week whenever I download my podcasts to listen in my car, the download speeds are basically on Edge, which means It takes about an hour for one download..which is my total commute.
So the thing is I just flashed bionix 1.3 and it had ka5 modem, I thought it might be the modem so I got ka7... After doing a speed test which was around 1mg down I stuck with it...but never the less my download speeds for my podcasts are still at around .1megabits.... I then tried kb1 but still no luck... My speed tests are great but actual download speed in the native browser is horrific... The thing is websites load very fast, I can stream the exact same podcasts through flash player and they work flawlessly.. I even downloaded the same podcasts with opera mini browser and they go at around 1.5 megabits per secound...it seems that only downloading through the native browser does this...any one have an idea of what is going on? Have you heard of anything like this? Am I being throttled on downloads? Btw the websites were I listen to these podcasts are revision3,twit.tv and cnet, if that helps ...

Check your account on the web you may be throttled. Also you may want to try Dolphin browser. It works very well
If you reached your 10Gb cap then you would throttled to roughly Edge speeds.
10Gb is a lot of data to chew through in a month but if you tether a bunch for long periods thata your culprit.

I thought the cap was 5 gb. Or is it on the older plan?

Have you tried using a podacast app like google listen or podcatcher to d/l instead of using the browser? I usually listen to twit live using the twit app, I don't d/l anymore it just takes too long.

Well, you could always download the podcasts before (previous night, etc if available) your commute until your new billing cycle begins.

5 GB is the current plan. 10 GB is the old grandfathered one.
i thought they throttle you at 5gb. i reach that limit just about every month. either way, t-mobile will text you if you are being throttled due to limit cap, so if they haven't done that, that's probably not it. I can't really help you other than to tell you to go buy "doggcatcher". It's pretty much the best podcast tool out on android. it's a few bucks but if your'e the type of person that listens to podcasts a lot it's definitely worth it.
1. you can set a schedule so that your phone will automatically update and download your podcast feed with the most recent episode and you can set how many episodes it will save at one time.
2. set it to only download podcasts onto your phone if your on wifi only and or if your phone is plugged into a power source.
3. you can long press podcasts and stream it over 3g if the podcast rss updated but your not on wifi to download it.
4. does audio and video. you can even choose the video player of your choice.
5. very nice clean interface.
6. you can add podcast feeds by searching, recommendations, rss, and popular podcasts are ready to add easily and instantly (twit network, revision3, youtube, npr, bbc)
that's just a few useful things off the top of my head that this program can do. trust me. just buy the program let it work it's magic when your on wifi while you sleep and when you're on your commute you will have a bunch of content ready for you to listen to without worrying about being throttled or being cut off in the middle of a podcast.
It takes some time to setup doggcatcher just the way you want it to fit to your schedule but once you got it down, i'm sure you'll be happy with this program.
sorry i couldn't answer your throttle question but this thing will definitely help keep your 3g data traffic low.
cheers,
dan
Thanks to everyone for the quick replies.. Before posting this I checked my data usage and I als checked it this morning as well, it states that I am at 1gig... also a side note, the tmobile my account app, has a reminder setting that lets you know when your reaching your limit, but it won't let me activate it because i am on the "unlimited" plan.. i thought that was wierd, since i know i have a 5 gig cap... but anyways back to my original post, thanks dan and badaphook for your suggestion on apps, I will look into them.
My post is more regarding the fact that it seem that my downloads are being throttled. When viewing websites and doing speed tests Im getting anywhere from 1-2.5mgbits but downloading doesnt come close.. only then does my connection seem to be throttled. Has anyone heard of this or experienced it? I would call tmobile to see if they have anything to do with it, but I'm not sure if it might be a side effect of my rom? any ideas anyone?

YouTube not working with 4g on??

Ok so here's the skinny. I've noticed that when I have 4g on and I load up YouTube app, I sometimes get a "no connection" message on YouTube. I then promptly go to the web browser to test data and it works fine. Sometimes even 7mbps. I then go back to YouTube and still get the same thing. I have to turn off 4g, load up YouTube on 3g, then turn it back on for it to work. Even then I can only watch exactly 5min of a video in hd before it stops and I have to hit reload and fast forward to where I was. Now imagine what I gotta do to watch a 15min video. I'm at a loss... now I'm no genius, but I know well enough about programming and phones and have tried so many things to fix this to no avail (i.e.- reflashing Rom, updating sprint prl, restoring, rebooting, reinstalling apks...etc). I get the sense that it sort of goes idle after 5min of playing a vid... any suggestions?
BTW sorry if something like this has been posted before, the search feature on xda app never worked and I will surely turn to dust before I can manually sift through all the posts in the Evo 4g section. I appreciate your understanding.

Tethering netflix through 3g

So i'm working a long, boring 11 hour shift today and to help pass the time i'v been tethering my laptop to my EVO and watching netflix (dexter ) over 3g. Netflix is running surprisingly well considering my 3g speeds are crap my only concern is that I may be using too much data.
Is it reasonable for me to stream netflix for such an extended period of time or should I lay off for a little? Sprint is supposed to be the last phone company offering "truly unlimited" data so I personally don't see a problem with it, but I also don't want any trouble with sprint.
What do you guys think?
P.S I'm not feeling Dexter that much, seems a little over-hyped. Any recommended netflix streams to help me maintain sanity?

Wow I'm surprised it runs that well over 3g. I've tethered stuff when I have 4g before since I get it in certain areas where I live, but whenever I'm browsing the internet and going to places like youtube my 3g usually loads slower the the speed of the video.
My 3g doesn't seem terribly bad either, like 1mb down or so.
I was very surprised also of how well it streams over 3g. Pretty clear too.

Its shot in the same style as The Office and Parks&Recreation but its super vulgar
I too am very surprised at streaming over 3G..... epicness!

Yeah, netflix did a great job with their live streaming service.
I'm checking out some of the shows you guys recommended, thanks!
Now if I could just get Netflix working my BOS Kingdom rom, I'll be set!!
its should be ok spring is really lax on things like this
Watch an old B/W movie. Requires less bandwidth. ;-)
Can anyone tell me how many gigs a 90 minute movie would be? Or if its megabytes that too.

[Q] CM Based Roms Play Store 3G Connention Time Out Issues

Every time I flash to a CM Based, AOKP, AOSP Rom they play store only works on Wifi or 4G data connection. Every time I try to access the store in 3G I get the "Connection Timed Out Retry" Screen. As soon as I connect back to Wifi it works and when im in a LTE area no issues there. Does anyone else have this same issue? Has anyone found a solution to this. I do not have this issue on any TW rom.
I love these roms and hate being restricted to TW Roms since there aren't many to choose from.
Really Really Really wish we could get Wicked Sensations on the Sprint S4. I wouldn't have any reason for this post. Makes me wanna go back to the S3. Dazed come on man!!!!!
Mine works on 3g but mine timed out BC my time in twrp was off changed the time on my recovery and all is well I know that sounds dumn
